Quotes of the day

President Obama said the Sunni militants that have taken over parts of northern Iraq pose a “medium- and long-term threat” to the U.S. because of their extreme ideology, although other groups probably have more advanced immediate plans to attack U.S…

“I think it’s important for us to recognize that ISIS is just one of a number of organizations that we have to stay focused on,” Mr. Obama said, noting that groups like al Qaeda and Boko Haram, the group that kidnapped hundreds of young women in Nigeria, are still active.

“This is going to be a global challenge and one that the United States is going to have to address but we’re not going to be able to address it alone. And as I said yesterday, what we can’t do is think that we’re just going to play whack-a-mole and send U.S. troops occupying various countries wherever these organizations pop up,” the president said. “We’re going to have to have a more focused, more targeted strategy and we’re going to have to partner and train local law enforcement and military to do their jobs as well.”

***

Sen. Barbara Boxer on Sunday blasted former Vice President Dick Cheney’s criticism of the Obama administration over Iraq as “sick.”…

Boxer, who stressed she supports the “counterterrorism mission” in Iraq, says there’s no appetite for too muscular of a military involvement after America’s long war there.

“The American people don’t want it, the president doesn’t want it, the saner voices in the Senate and the House don’t want it,” she said. “We do have a national security interest in preventing another 9/11. The Iraqis had their chance. They blew it. And I think right now they have got to figure out if they can form an inclusive government.”

***

“If we were to get rid of Assad, it would be a Jihadist wonderland in Syria,” the Kentucky Republican said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “It’s now a Jihadist wonderland in Iraq precisely because we got over involved not because we had too little involvement.”

Paul also said he doesn’t believe the Sunni Muslim fighters, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, who are advancing toward Baghdad, pose an immediate threat to the United States.

“It could at some point,” he said. “Right now, if you’re a member of ISIS, you’re looking at the Shi’ites right in front of you in the battles you are fighting. I don’t believe ISIS is, in the middle of a fight right now, thinking, ‘Hmm we should send intercontinental missiles to America.’”

***

“Rand Paul, with all due respect, is basically an isolationist,” Cheney shot back. “He doesn’t believe we ought to be involved in that part of the world. I think it’s absolutely essential. One of the things I worried about 12 years ago – and that I worry about today – is that there will be another 9/11 attack and that the next time it’ll be with weapons far deadlier than airline tickets and box cutters.”…

He argued that the Obama administration is “still living back in the day when they claimed we got bin Laden, the terrorism problem is solved. That wasn’t true then. It’s even less true today. The threat is bigger than it’s ever been.”

Asked about what he would recommend, Cheney argued for a broad-based approach to unrest in the region and also called for bolstering moderates in Syria, the scene of another civil war with ties to the unrest in Iraq. But he also acknowledged that “at this point, there are no good, easy answers in Iraq,” something he blamed squarely on the administration.

***

Pressed on what specific actions he supports, Rubio urged a severing of supply lines between Syria – home to another civil war – and Iraq; bolstering “moderate rebel forces in Syria,” and more security for nearby Jordan. He also argued that Iran should not be allowed to gain a stronghold in Iraq, pushing back on Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who recently questioned whether the U.S. runs the risk of becoming Iran’s “air force” with miscalculated involvement.

“I don’t agree with that statement, I think that’s quite an exaggeration,” Rubio said. “The truth of the matter is, if we do nothing, Iran is still going to be involved…if Iran goes in there and becomes involved, and somehow helps the Iraqis turn back ISIS, you can rest assured that a future Iraqi government will be completely, 100 percent under the influence and in the pocket of Iran.”

Temporary foreign worker program changes called ‘business-unfriendly’

The Conservative government’s overhaul of the temporary foreign worker program got a thumbs-down from business associations Friday who say the changes will hurt the service industry.

Employment Minister Jason Kenney unveiled the program changes Friday, which include a cap on the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers at each worksite and strict penalties for employers who break the rules.

Under the new rules, employers in places with high unemployment rates won’t be allowed to hire temporary foreign workers in the lowest wage and skill groups in the accommodation, food service and retail sectors.

The tech industry is disproportionately owned and operated by the LEFT. If the LEFT is accusing Corporate America of disenfranchising American workers…relevant to the article that I posted, they’re shouting down a well. They’ll be met with their own echo and their own reflection.

When manufacturing jobs were shipped out of the country, outsourced, Americans were solemnly promised that the new ‘tech jobs’, relating to building and servicing the items produced by the tech industry, would replace those manufacturing jobs lost to the ‘global manufacturing floor’… i.e. China and other foreign nations where cheap labor and lax regulation could be found.

This has not proven to be the case, and now, to add insult to injury, the tech industry is bringing in cheap foreign labor to this nation to replace those Americans who had found employment in that industry here at home.

I’m sorry, I mostly lurk on the QOTD threads but I couldn’t pass this up:

Closed mindedness has never once moved the world in a better direction. If you are a true patriot than a little more open mind to what others outside the voices inside your bubble have to say about the world they share with you.
coolrepublica on June 22, 2014 at 1:29 AM

Could you possibly relay that message to those responsible for the daily barrage of leftist worldview through the culture; popular (Hollywood, television, music industry, advertising, magazines) and otherwise (academia, news media, bureaucrats at every level)? It is inescapable in those mediums and even more so incapable of open mindedness.
In fact, because of this society being incessantly inundated with this worldview everywhere you turn it takes an open mind to think conservatively by definition. The default position for non thinkers and narrow minds is exactly within the box.
We get it. We understand your worldview better than most of you who are in this box. We have the added bonus and upper hand of outside perspective.
Because of this, we see this demand for what it really is. It is not a request. It is a demand that we think like you. We simply cannot. We know the results too well.

Iraq troops are out of hell-fires and tank loss’s:

Land Platforms
Iraqi Abrams losses revealed
Jeremy Binnie, London – IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly
20 June 2014
************

The armour on five of Iraq’s M1A1 Abrams tanks was penetrated by anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs)

and six helicopters were shot down between 1 January and the end of May, The New York Times quoted an unnamed US official as saying on 13 June.

The official said 28 Iraqi Army Abrams had been damaged in fighting with militants,

five of them suffering full armour penetration when hit by ATGMs.

The United States supplied 140 refurbished M1A1 Abrams tanks to Iraq between 2010 and 2012. While they have new equipment to improve situational awareness, they do not have the depleted uranium amour package that increases protection over the tank’s frontal arc.

The penetration of a tank’s armour by a shaped-charge warhead increases the likelihood of crew casualties, but does not necessarily result in the destruction of the vehicle, especially if it has a dedicated ammunition compartment, as in the case of the Abrams.

However, the US official said the Iraqi Army has problems maintaining its Abrams, suggesting it will struggle to get damaged tanks back into service.

At least one video has emerged showing an Abrams ‘brew up’ after being hit by an ATGM during fighting this year in the western province of Al-Anbar. Militants operating in Al-Anbar have also released images of numerous attacks on other Abrams tanks, including ones involving a 9K11 Kornet ATGM, RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and a M70 Osa rocket launcher. The latter is a Yugoslavian weapon that has been widely used by insurgents in neighbouring Syria, but is rarely seen in Iraq.

The damage inflicted on the tanks has been difficult to assess from the images. These mostly seem to be stills from unreleased videos and tend to show spectacular explosions, but not the state of the vehicles after the attacks.

Only one sequence of images posted on a pro-Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Twitter account on 6 June appears to show an Abrams actually being destroyed. A militant is seen placing a charge on the tank and an object is also thrown into an open turret hatch. Flames are then seen coming out of the hatches. The fate of the crew is unclear.

Another sequence posted on 28 May purportedly shows the same militant placing a charge on or in the turret of another Abrams in a hull-down position. While the extent of the damage caused by the resulting explosion is unclear, the fact that militants are repeatedly getting close to the tanks suggests the vehicles lack adequate infantry support.

thatsafactjack on June 23, 2014 at 12:15 AM

There’s no doubt that those promises were nothing more than insincere hopes and best case scenarios. But I wouldn’t blame the tech industry for the lack of domestic technical experts in some sectors (i.e. semiconductor design, artificial intelligence). What’s unacceptable is the the large number of visas granted to the consulting companies that bring in thousands from India to replace American IT staff and general programmers.

One of these days, people will have to wake up and realize that a $300 bil trade deficit with China is not sustainable. While Americans play politics and blame each other, or the poor, for the hollowing out of the middle class, wealth continues its flight to Asia. At some point, Americans need to stand up to the big business interests that are profiting from the destruction of US jobs and demand that trade agreements are restructured to reduce trade deficits, and in doing so, protect US jobs.

There is no “counterterrorism mission” in Iraq. Our moron in chief affirmative action case left nothing but an under-defended embassy.
On 7 December 1941 we lost 2,471 Americans in an attack on a military base that so enraged the American people that we sent troops all over the world, losing 419,000+ American men and women and to inflict millions of enemy deaths. We didn’t stop until we had dumped tons of napalm, white phosphorous and drums of diesel fuel on Tokyo and 2 atomic bombs on Japan killing hundreds of thousands.
On 11 September 2001 we lost more Americans (2,977) in an act of terrorism against moistly unarmed civilians. Now we want to turn over an oil producing state in the center of the middle east as a safe haven and cash cow to the same subhuman scum who attacked us. That’s how decadent this country has become.

Bullshit. Growing up, nearly anything you wanted was made in the US by American workers. Half of my relatives worked in plants ran by companies like Sylvania, RCA and others. We priced ourselves out of affordable manufacturing workers with unskilled trade unions and made EPA standards so tough to manage, our product were not profitable being made here. Add taxes to the mix and your carping on your big business boogieman becomes a ridiculous rant.

Cheese Wheel on June 23, 2014 at 12:56 AM

It seems you don’t understand the context. cr won’t even talk to me, which actually makes me happy. =) So then, how can she be feeding off of me? lol

No one is stopping you from leaving, if that’s what you want. You aren’t my concern. I hope that is ok with you.

Senator Jeff Sessions: Pro-Amnesty Elites Treat People As Commodities

Rupert Murdoch also recently argued for a dramatic expansion of the controversial H1B guest worker program. Murdoch writes that “there is a shortage of qualified American candidates,” to fill jobs in STEM fields like computer services and engineering. But the evidence shows the opposite: the US graduates approximately twice as many STEM-trained students each year as there are STEM jobs to fill. There is a large surplus of unemployed Americans with STEM degrees and yet, per the Economic Policy Institute, “the annual inflow of guestworkers amount to one-third to one-half of all new IT jobs holders.” As Rutgers Professor Hal Salzman poignantly asked, “Average wages in IT today are the same as they were when Bill Clinton was president well over a decade ago…if there is in fact a shortage, why doesn’t that reflect in the market? Why don’t wages go up?”

The United States has the most generous immigration policy in the world. Each year, the US grants permanent legal admission to an additional 1 million immigrants who will be able to apply for citizenship, along with roughly 700,000 guest workers, 200,000 relatives of guest workers, and 500,000 students. These are overwhelmingly not farm workers as activists falsely suggest, but are instead workers brought in to fill jobs in every sector, occupation and industry throughout the US economy.

Overall, the number of people living in the US who were born in another country has quadrupled since 1970. And yet the Senate immigration bill doubles the rate of future immigration and guest worker admissions.

Good evening, 4Grace.:) Wonderful to see you.

It’s an excellent question. Perhaps Mike Pence, although we don’t know if he’s running or not.

Many who have the qualifications to run are currently remaining silent on the issue and have refrained from saying they’re interested in running.

The others, those who look like possible candidates, have all signaled or said outright that they are pro-amnesty… they just don’t want to call it that.. and worse… they want to increase legal immigration to afford big business an even larger wider pool and further suppress wages.

That donor money is very persuasive to a careerist politician with grand ambitions.
