Obama’s former spy chief: ‘We made very clear’ ISIS a growing threat to U.S.

posted at 5:01 pm on June 22, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Former CIA acting director Mike Morell, now a CBS News contributor, joined House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) on Sunday morning to discuss the threat to the Middle East posed by the Sunni Islamic militant group ISIS. Both Morell and Rogers agreed that the failure to address the ISIS threat earlier was an Obama administration policy failure and not a failure of intelligence.

“Al-Qaeda in Iraq was essentially defeated when U.S. military left at the end of 2011,” Morell conceded. “And the intelligence community monitored the growth of al-Qaeda post 2011 in great detail with intelligence reporting, with analysis. We made very clear that this group is becoming more and more dangerous.”

“We watched them pool up in the east of Syria in a way that we’ve never seen before,” Rogers agreed.

“But was there a policy failure to work on what that intelligence was showing us?” CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell asked.

“Yes,” Rogers concurred. He noted that those who advocated for a containment of the conflict in Syria warned that it was a conflict which could destabilize the region.

Morell previously said on CBS This Morning that one of ISIS’s goals was to strike at the United States homeland after creating a safe haven in Syria and western Iraq.

Al-Qaeda/ISIS/Muslim Brotherhood/Taliban/etc.

They are all just different names for the Sword Of Islam.

Defeating one or the other means very little.

Islam itself is the source and it is still there. Al-Qaeda, ISIS, or whatever they decide to call themselves will always return.

Key West Reader on June 22, 2014 at 5:53 PM

I have always felt that it is not that the intelligence community is completely caught by surprise. But rather that the people receiving the information from the agents/sources in the field do not want to accept what is being given them. They will not accept the information and/or recommendations from the folks actually in the field because it conflicts with their agenda.

If the higher ups and political appointees started listening to the information given them, they might have to accept that the situation is not as discussed in the faculty lounge but that the real world is exactly that — real.

Not said:

“So we made sure that we worked hard to topple the legitimate government of Syria. We tasked one of our Ambassadors to run guns into the region as long as that operation was viable. Now that ISIL has those weapons and the weapons and munitions taken from the Iraqi Army, we think there’s a good chance for a new caliphate. Our goal now is to act as though we are doing both something and nothing in the region as we scheme to get our Muslim Brotherhood friends into power positions in Iraq, Syria and New Obamastan.”

Nope. Detroit is already the ideal of the utopia our progressives envision for every community of the USA. It cannot be improved. Its better the masses are dispersed to towns and cities not yet modeling Detroit. The aim being to rapidly overwhelm local domestic resources while sharing the burden of caring for these “refugees” , as they spread communicable diseases, gang violence and jihad (surely OTMs from the ME are among the masses) all around the country for cultural diversification, redistributive social and economic justice for all.

Our progressives sincerely believe every place deserves the results of Detroit’s agenda. And “failure” is in the eye of the beholder. One political ideology’s failure is another’s fabulous success. The Left’s wish is for all other American cities to model Detroit’s “success.”

one of ISIS’s goals was to strike at the United States homeland after creating a safe haven in Syria and western Iraq

This is the quintessential point for people who argue against the Iraq war including this administration
.

Attempting to stabilize Iraq helped address the greater threat to our safety that comes from the region. It provided a healthy opposition which kept these nefarious forces in check.

Our military accomplished that goal in war, and this administration lost it in political rhetoric and more lies. Do the detractors need more proof than the events currently unfolding in front of us?

The failure to negotiate a robust SOFA, the same one Mr. Obama’s predecessor negotiated, was a deliberate political act. It bowed to the foolish lies and political rhetoric “the war was over”, and used the number of forces left in-country as a misguided barometer.

All the warnings from our military that the size force Mr. Obama desired was too small, were ignored- at our peril. Now the gains and sacrifices we made have been wasted. The region is not only more volatile, but terrorists have now acquired advanced weapons, vast sums of money and territory that will eventually be focused against killing Americans. All to satisfy Mr. Obama’s political desires.

Change indeed. And like most other things this president has done, the American people are ultimately worse off because of it.

Marcus Traianus on June 23, 2014 at 6:52 AM
