White House: IRS probe one of many Republican ‘conspiracy theories’

posted at 6:41 pm on June 20, 2014 by Noah Rothman

White House Press Sec. Josh Earnest was probed on Friday by the White House press corps over how the administration is complying with congressional investigators pursuing the Internal Revenue Service’s alleged targeting conservative groups with undue scrutiny.

On Friday, congressional investigators grilled IRS Commissioner John Koskinen over his agency failing to disclose that thousands of former executive Lois Lerner’s emails were lost when her computer crashed and was subsequently thrown away. When Earnest was asked if the White House counsel had attempted to recover the emails, Earnest implied that the matter was an effort by Republicans to concoct a “conspiracy.”

“There have been 13 months of multiple congressional investigations, including 14 congressional hearings, 30 interviews with IRS employees, 50 written congressional requests, and 750,000 pages of documents, and all of that has done nothing to substantiate false Republican claims of a broader political conspiracy,” Earnest insisted.

“So I don’t know if you’re floating another conspiracy or if this is a request from Republicans who are floating a conspiracy or what exactly the suggestion is,” he continued. “But the fact of the matter is we’ve cooperated extensively, and despite that cooperation, you know, we’ve seen continued allegations of Republican conspiracy theories that just never pan out.”

Fox News’ Ed Henry noted that the disappearance of two years’ of IRS emails suggests that there has not been “extensive cooperating” with congressional investigators from either the White House or the IRS. “You don’t seem to be taking that point seriously,” he observed.

“I think it’s fair that we recognize that software moves on and that archiving in a digital age is not as easy as it might seem to the public,” Earnest asserted. “Those aren’t just my comments, but those are actually the comments of Congressman Darrell Issa on February 26th, 2008. So, his suggestion that somehow there’s a political conspiracy going on here is not consistent with what he’s previously said on those kind of issues.”

“If the emails were there you could show, hey, there’s no conspiracy,” Henry asked.

“Why are two years of emails missing?” Henry asked again.

“Because there was a — the computer crashed,” Earnest replied.

John Hinderaker at Power Line:

…the IRS whines that it has 90,000 employees and that managing its internal documents is therefore difficult. But take a look at the IRS’s budget. In fiscal years 2012 and 2013, the IRS’s budget for “Information Services” was in excess of $1.8 billion annually! Nearly two billion dollars in “information services,” and the agency can’t keep track of emails? And that doesn’t count another $330 million, annually, for “Business Systems Modernization.”

If the IRS can’t preserve its senior managers’ email accounts on an information systems budget of $1.8 billion a year, the federal government is even more inefficient and incompetent than we thought.

Providing stacks of irrelevant data and pleading the 5th, when added to the statstically impossible disk crashes, make a reasonable person suspicious enough to pursue allegations of corruption further.

But notice that Earnest is not defending the IRS here. He’s distancing the WH from this scandal and trying to rule out a broader political conspiracy. The tax collectors may soon be jettisoned to keep the administration afloat.

Brian in Titletown on June 20, 2014 at 7:06 PM

I’ve suggested this to many on many occasions. Those who were complaining – prompting the discussion – gasped and faded…. they could never do that.

The fact is that taxpayers live in fear of the IRS. Rightly so. We are the Jews of Russia and Germany of the last centuries for they were always in fear of retribution and persecution. Taxpayers are a persecuted class.

The State only understands that they need to feed the Beast, and the State will continue to feed until……..they are forced to stop.

What’s the easiest way to starve the Beast? Refuse. There aren’t enough prisons to house all of us, and the Beast can’t afford to do it. Sure, we can all become embroiled in endless audits and terror tactics with the IRS, but that’s generally the way we live now.

While our government casually tosses around their lies and allegations of ordinary citizens being malcontents and radicals I would suggest that our government is both radical and tyrannical.

It doesn’t get anymore Orwellian than that.

KMC1 on June 20, 2014 at 7:29 PM

“Would you like to play a game?” (John in “Saw”)

The game has moved into a new phase. Koskinen demonstrated it this morning at the hearing and Earnest is playing the same game. The administration is now trying to goad conservatives into getting really angry. It’s the smirks, the in-your-face attitudes, it’s the blatant blaming of the whole thing on the Republicans.

And I’ve noticed how this this uptick in the administrations tactics have started to change the rhetoric coming from the right. It’s even evident on Hot Air. “There’s not enough rope at The Home Depot to hang all of these scumbags,” “Either this gets fixed or it’s going to end in violence,” “This skank has the look of that guy you just want to punch in the face.”

I believe that the administration is conscientiously trying to provoke this kind of reaction. they are hoping to build a ground swell of anger on the right, anger that may turn into something physical.

The administration would relish this. And this is not the move of a desperate adversary. This is a coldly calculated piece of gamesmanship. And I’m afraid that the more reactive elements on the right are going to buy right into this.

Makes me think of a D&D riddle encounter.

You come to two doors, each guarded by an Obama press secretary. They look at you and one says, “Behind one of these doors is the path you seek, behind the other is certain death. But be warned, you may only ask one question, directed to only one of us. Know also that one of us always lies, and the other always tells the truth.”

The catch, of course, is that both are liars, and both ways lead to certain death.

When the Attorney General is covering for the executive branch corruption, you cannot get to the bottom of this sort of thing. Perhaps the Supreme Court which has some knowledge of the quality of cases being brought could have some role in the appointment of Justice Department officials before Senate confirmation and that process would have to be repeated every two years.
