NBC/WSJ poll finds 54% have no confidence in Obama’s leadership

posted at 8:41 am on June 18, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

The sixth-year blues have caught up to Barack Obama … with a vengeance. In an NBC/WSJ poll taken before the meltdown in Iraq, Obama gets his lowest marks ever on foreign policy, where his claim to “smart power” has evidently reached its expiration date. But the real danger to Obama and to Democrats vying for office in less than five months is the vote of no confidence in Obama’s leadership:

The percentage of Americans approving of President Barack Obama’s handling of foreign policy issues has dropped to the lowest level of his presidency as he faces multiple overseas challenges, including in Iraq, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Additionally, the public is evenly split on whether Obama is a competent manager of the federal bureaucracy. And a majority of respondents – 54 percent – believe the term-limited president is no longer able to lead the country. …

Just 37 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy, which is an all-time low in the survey, while 57 percent disapprove, an all-time high.

What’s more, by a 44 percent-to-30 percent margin, Americans disagree with the Obama administration’s decision to secure the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for five imprisoned Taliban fighters.

Obama’s job approval comes in at 41/53, the second-worst in the NBC/WSJ series (March 2014′s 41/54 is the nadir). The 37/57 on foreign policy is a record low for Obama, and the economy is nearly at a historical low at 41/54. But it’s the leadership issues that will make headlines today. In terms of competency, Obama now ranks below Bush at the analogous point in time of his predecessor’s presidency. Post-Katrina Bush had a 53/46 rating for competency, while it’s an even split at 50/50 for Obama. Thirty-one percent say Obama isn’t competent at all, compared to 24% for Bush in the same time frame, and that’s a ten-point increase for Obama from last June.

That last metric isn’t an anomaly. Only 15% believe that Obama’s performance has improved over the past year, while 41% think it has gotten worse. The top areas in which those respondents believe Obama has gotten worse are ObamaCare, foreign policy — and the Taliban 5 swap for Bowe Bergdahl, with the economy and Obama’s dishonesty rounding out the top five. Small wonder, then, that only 42% of respondents think Obama can still lead this nation, while 54% reject Obama’s leadership.

As Chuck Todd tells Morning Joe, “This is the public saying your presidency is over”:

I’d disagree with Chuck on what this means for Democrats, though. While it’s true that the Congressional polling isn’t a disaster for Democrats, voters will be looking for ways to fill the leadership vacuum and deal with the perceived incompetence and dishonesty at the White House — and they won’t be choosing Democrats for that mission.

It makes as little sense for Libtardanddie to keep blaming Bush for Obama’s failures as it would be for us to blam Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton for Bush’s.

Correct, except that Bush did not introduce the kind of low standards of intelligence, lack of acuity and unprincipled mendacity into the equation that Cuwatah and BimboSniffer did – and which baton the foolish muzz-moron is currently carrying with further lowered traitorous standards to whatever finish line there may be…

1. Immigration…overwhelm the borders with thousands of children that we can’t send back

2. Foreign policy…ignore or antagonize our friends, while courting and giving recognition to enemies and abruptly ending wars

3. Domestic policy…make everyone dependant on government..millions more on food stamps, disability, Medicaid so that we go bankrupt

I am surprised it is not 100% of people detest this guys leadership

Imagine that for a bit. Imagine being consumed by your academic fetish but being constantly shown as wrong on almost every topic you introduce here outside of a laughably self-limited sort of “the influence of women professors in gay black history and how it influences future gay history of blacks and women” sphere of knowledge.

Now imagine knowing that the non-bubble folks you choose to congregate with care very little about your womens-/LBGT-/black-studies knowledge. And, worse, often laugh openly about its perceived value after you prove you haven’t bothered to learn much else.

Sadder still is knowing that he comes here and gets knocked around academically by people who probably only graduated high school but who have genuine intellectual curiousity and have educated themselves on different topics, and this forces him to return to the comfort of that little womens-/LBGT-/black-studies bubble where he knows what he’s expected to say to be told he’s smart again.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Sterling Holobyte on June 18, 2014 at 11:24 AM

Why aren’t we comparing Obama’s 2014 numbers with Bush’s numbers in the lead up to the 2006 midterm? Doing so would actually compare their numbers at similar points in their presidency, during the lead up to second term midterm elections. Oh yeah…because at that point Bush’s poll numbers were far, far worse than Obama’s are now, and that would totally unmake the very premise of this post.

libfreeordie on June 18, 2014 at 8:50 AM

Actually, this very same NBC/WSJ “poll” had Bush’s disapproval going into the 2006 midterm elections at (drum roll) 57%.

So with the margin of error being 3.1%, they are in fact tied. Please readjust your O’bama Kneepads accordingly.

jukin3 on June 18, 2014 at 11:51 AM

John Hinderaker at Power Line makes some good points:

I haven’t yet been able to see the poll’s internals, so we don’t know whether the respondents were skewed in one direction or another. But the trend is unmistakable. The WSJ/NBC polling was done from June 11 through June 15, so it caught the Bergdahl swap (of which most disapprove) but not the disaster in Iraq. With events generally moving against the administration overseas, it seems likely that Obama’s overall rating and especially his rating on foreign policy still have some distance to fall.

HornetSting on June 18, 2014 at 12:42 PM

Are we really comparing Katrina to Obama’s scandals? Can I gently point out the jacktards in New Orleans had 5 days warning to evacuate and the mayor of New Orleans let dozens of school busses sit and get ruined instead of loading them up and using them to evacuate. Are we really going to blame Bush because he didn’t realize people would sit on their asses doing absolutely nothing to help themselves or work together with their neighbors ?? Did I mention they had 5 DAYS warning?
Benghazi, Fast and Furious, IRS, the VA hospitals, swapping terrorists without approval, opening our borders etc, etc is not comparable to freaking Katrina.

That’s gonna leave a mark.

If the pollsters stopped padding the results for Emperor Zero, master of infinite nothingness™ he would be polling lower than the last king of France just before the reign of terror…

But it’s the leadership issues that will make headlines today.

…Except that it WON’T make “headlines” anywhere where low information voters are. The media will make sure this is NOT the headline.

Color me un-suprised. We in the know about Mr Emporer, have been harping about his lack of leadership since he first announced his candidacy way back when.

His enablers are leaving him now. He is in his second term, he has peaked politically, and he will never hold high public office again. Those hungering the the power rush are off seeking new blood to drink and revel in.

From this point on, it’s just going to get worse. You would think that after 6 years he would have learned something about leadership.. the fact that he hasn’t should speak volumes about who was actually running the country the last 6 years.

Less Competent than Bush… LOL

Endunamoo on June 18, 2014 at 1:50 PM

I had a call last night from a local campaign worker for a man running for the state legislature in my district. She gave me a laundry list of things that he’s for but no mention of his party. She then asked for my support for the candidate. I told her that I was a conservative and asked his party. She told me D and I told her I wouldn’t be supporting him. They are trying to hide their designation as if they already know it’s a drawback.

Kissmygrits on June 18, 2014 at 2:09 PM

No — if you follow the links, you’ll find that this is a result from the March 2006 NBC/WSJ poll, which was the closest in time to the same period in the Obama presidency of that series, which is what I wrote. That’s “post-Katrina.”

Seriously, try reading for comprehension, and if you have questions, click the links and check the source data. You’ll find that a lot easier than making your reading comprehension difficulties so public.

non-nonpartisan on June 18, 2014 at 3:28 PM

I’m sorry, but I can’t let this go. “Post-Katrina Bush” is not an analagous point in his presidency. Katrina was in August of 2005, are you saying that those numbers represent an average of Bushs’s competency rating from August 2005 to December 2008? Well to compare a 3 years average to a single poll isn’t very good methodology. Or did you find one particularly good number Bush’s post-Katrina competency polling? Either way, an “analagous” poll number would be polls from the summer of 2006. Or even an average of Bush polling in June of 2006.

libfreeordie on June 18, 2014 at 9:00 AM

BTW, it wasn’t only Ed that used the term “Post-Katrina”. Chuck Todd said the same thing, on the air (but you don’t care):

“This poll is a disaster for the president,” Todd said. “You look at the presidency here: Lowest job rating, tied for the lowest; lowest on foreign policy. His administration is seen as less competent than the Bush administration, post-Katrina.
“On the issue of do you believe he can still lead? A majority believe no. Essentially the public is saying your presidency is over,” Todd added.

(emphasis mine)

The idiot Jason Carter, grandson of the idiot Jimmy Carter, is running for governor of Georgia. In his ads they introduce him as “a fiscal conservative”, and no mention that he’s a Democratic or the Democratic Party or socialism or progressivism etc.

slickwillie2001 on June 18, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Hey, Ed, what about the huge man-caused disaster on our southern border?? Why no post on that???

Is it because, as I understand and remember, that you and everyone except maybe AP is endorsing some kind of amnesty so the GOP can survive?

1986 – huge amnesty for estimated 1 million illegal aliens.
Even though 3 million got amnesty, problem solved, right???

2012 – Obama signs DACA EO to give amnesty to a million or so young illegal aliens. Problem solved, right???

WRONG WRONG WRONG!

….Also notable: The president has lost a considerable amount of support from the Hispanic community, his approval rating plummeting to 44 percent, down from its previous posting of 67 percent in January 2013. The decline comes at a time when the border between the U.S. and Mexico has been overrun with thousands of abandoned immigrant children and teenagers…..

http://washingtonexaminer.com/poll-watch-hispanics-help-drive-president-obamas-approval-rating-to-a-fresh-low/article/2549875

This latest flood is a man-made disaster — and the man is Obama!

Every darn amnesty just incentivizes more illegal immigration!

When will you guys wake up and realize that you cannot reward the law-breaker with his ill-gotten gains (residency) and expect the crime wave to stop?

And why hasn’t anyone at Hot Air editorial board looked at this poll:
