Video: Thad Cochran had no idea that Eric Cantor lost

posted at 12:31 pm on June 13, 2014 by Allahpundit

I don’t know what to tell you here except to repeat a point I made last week, that it’s disgraceful for Mississippi establishmentarians to be pushing this poor guy through one last campaign when he’s clearly exhausted. They were desperate to keep feeding on pork, they saw Chris McDaniel and the tea party as a threat to that, and they knew that their best chance at stopping them was sticking with a state institution like Cochran even though “out of touch” doesn’t begin to capture how remote he is anymore. After watching this, it feels like outright exploitation.

And thus, a question must be asked:

I had the same thought after watching the clip. Listen to the mindless boilerplate he resorts to, about winners and losers, when he’s put on the spot about Cantor. The shock that the political world experienced on Tuesday when news broke that the sitting majority leader had lost is completely absent. Best-case scenario, I think, is that he’s heard of Cantor but has no idea why his defeat was significant. It’s time, Mississippi.

Update: Weirder and weirder: Apparently, Cochran talked about Cantor’s loss on Wednesday, a day before the clip below was recorded. Did he … forget?

It wasn’t his wife who was exploited….they wanted to name the next Senator after he resigned. It is shameful!

His staff must have good reasons to keep him isolated. Not debating McDaniels, not adressing his own supporters on election night and obviously being kept away from everything that even remotely looks like a newspaper.

The shock that the political world experienced on Tuesday when news broke that the sitting majority leader had lost is completely absent. Best-case scenario, I think, is that he’s heard of Cantor but has no idea why his defeat was significant. It’s time, Mississippi.

Then you have Noah’s absolute insult and lie to the conservatives/TEA party folks.

An unfortunately prolific talking point about the GOP’s unfriendliness toward minorities, furthered by GOP primary voters jettisoning their only Jewish member in Congress, would be blunted by Labrador’s ascension to Majority Leader.

We don’t hate Cantor for his Jewishness, as we don’t despise obama for his half-blackness. Noah owes the good people an apology for being the lefts ventriloquist.

Also, don’t forget this crap-piece, when Cochran does 100 times worse.

Allah,

I don’t get the same vibe as you from the video. I get the sense that he’s downplaying it as nothing more than a coin toss. This way, there isn’t a soundbite (or video) of him either whining about the great loss of Cantor, or whooping it up over his loss.

Pure politician.

BobMbx on June 13, 2014 at 12:45 PM

“Well, it happens”…doofus, it never happened since 1899, when the Cantor position was first put in place.

Here in my town in northern MS, I’ve noticed at least two homes that have taken their Cochran signs down. I can’t say the same for McDaniel signs. This may be anecdotal, but that’s at least two people who voted for Cochran that probably won’t be voting for him in the runoff.

There are another two (large) homes that had multiple Cochran signs in the yards, but are now down to one sign each.

Cochran is toast. I do hope he keeps escaping his handlers and running to the nearest microphone just to be sure, though.

Karl Rove is in the Witness Protection Program. Not a peep from him. You’d think he’d be all over Fox News spinning.

In regard to Cochran, why do they always do this? I recall in Strom Thurmond’s last days as a senator, he didn’t even know where he was and practically had to be carried onto the senate floor.

TarheelBen on June 13, 2014 at 1:57 PM

d1carter, that is exactly what I have been thinking. His handlers have no intention of him finishing his term. They PLAN on him stepping down so they can “anoint” his replacement. A replacement that will be viewed as an incumbent in six years.

Tinker on June 13, 2014 at 1:58 PM

Good thing I read this here at Hot Air. Watched my local news, which serves the Mississippi/Alabama area, and there was not a single mention of this. You wouldn’t even know that there was runoff coming, or who the candidates are. You would learn, however, that there is a fabulous hot air balloon event this weekend.

So feeding the already-existing, palpable perception that he is senile, suffering from dementia, or off his meds is better than whining about Cantor’s loss or whooping it up? He’s already got his filthy lucre from his fellow GOPe cronies. He loses nothing from whining or celebrating.
