IRS: Those Lois Lerner emails you wanted? Yeah, her computer crashed, so…

posted at 4:51 pm on June 13, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Tasked by congressional investigators with uncovering all the emails related to the alleged targeting of conservative political groups with undue scrutiny, the Internal Revenue Service made some new emails available to investigators on Friday. However, in a statement, the agency confessed that former IRS executive Lois Lerner’s computer crashed in 2011 and efforts to restore some of the data lost in that crash have been unsuccessful.

The IRS informed congressional investigators on Friday that they have been working to uncover all of Lerner’s emails, even those not relating to ongoing investigations. While searching for those emails, however, they encountered a problem:

Via the Wall Street Journal:

In the course of collecting and producing Ms. Lerner’s additional emails, the IRS determined her hard drive crashed in 2011. At the time, Ms. Lerner asked IRS IT professionals to restore her hard drive, but they were unable to do so. Nonetheless, the IRS has or will produce 24,000 Lerner emails from this 2009-2011 time period, largely from the files of the other 82 individuals

“The IRS said it has done its best to reconstruct the emails of the former executive, Lois Lerner, who retired as the controversy unfolded last year,” The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The IRS statement asserts that the agency has made “unprecedented efforts” to work with investigators and provide them with all the materials they have requested.

This is little more than the criminal destruction of evidence by IRS officials in their effort to cover up their abuses of power and the linkages to the WH Counsel office / WH inner circle of the President.

It’s absolutely stunning that there are no backups of Lerner’s ‘crashed’ hard drive.

Good. Now the House can rightfully subpoena emails from other parties to piece together the trail.

Total BS. Believe me, the Feds have the ability to recover data from any hard drive short of it being physically destroyed. Pretty much anyone can do that with commercially available software. Secondly, all of that email, incoming and outgoing, passed through a POP3 and SMTP server. Those emails are out there to be turned over. They’re lying.

Well, I don’t know what kind of magical e-mail system the IRS uses…but e-mails are usually stored on an e-mail server as well…and it’s unbelievable to me that backups of that e-mail server are not available. Oh hell, who am I kidding…I’ll bet that ‘crashed’ too, huh? Or they lost the backups, right?

AUINSC on June 13, 2014 at 4:58 PM

Umm. Aren’t emails stored on servers? Not PC’s? Which is why you can read your emails from any computer and not necessarily your own. It shouldn’t matter if every computer in her office crashed.

HotAirian on June 13, 2014 at 4:58 PM

Unless they are using some antiquated system of email, there is a central mailbox for everyone. As in a copy is stored on the primary server and delivered from there. Think of it as the earliest form of “cloud storage”.

The idea that her hard drive crashing would lose emails is laughable.

A disk drive will tend to crash and be unrecoverable when you smash it with a hammer.

Ms. Lerner asked IRS IT professionals to restore her hard drive, but they were unable to do so.

Having IT professionals hit it a few more times while ‘trying to restore the hard drive’ doesn’t help.

If they had been investigating a Republican, they’d have sent it over to the NSA and recovered every byte.

True story: I had a financial institution wire an amount of withholding to the IRS in 2012. The IRS phucked up the crediting, so it sent me a notice instructing me of two ways to try to correct things. First, go online and work my way through an identity verification and then dealing with it. Second, calling them.

I tried the online method first. To verify my identity, the Service asked three or four questions. Each question would be posed and then four answers presented from which I could pick the correct answer. One question asked me for my street address when I last owned a car that I last owned in 1993. A second question asked me my street address when I lived with a person having my father’s name–an address that I had nearly 30 years ago. A third question asked me for the town and state in which I lived at a street address that I last had in 1996.

You cannot tell me that these IRS creeps can’t compile Lerner’s information immediately.
