Video: George H.W. Bush jumps out of a plane for his 90th birthday

posted at 9:41 pm on June 12, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

I don’t know about you, but I needed something a little lighter after today’s news. I’m not generally in favor of overly revering national politicians, but I am in favor of the good-natured, bipartisan affection our country generally bestows upon former presidents. It speaks to our national generous disposition. In the case of George H.W. Bush, he earns his affection by being a charmingly spry daredevil with super-cool socks.

Baller:

Love it:

“He had a big smile for the crowd. You could tell he was exhilarated,” said Diana Untermeyer, a family friend.

Witnesses said he was greeted with a hug and a kiss from his wife, Barbara, and a hug from his son George. The family left the landing zone without talking to reporters nearby.

Hundreds of people gathered on the rocky coast to get a glimpse of the jump.

Happy birthday, Mr. President!

Not a patriot in the least – an authoritarian, who believes we all should be obligated to be pushed around the by the state. Honestly, I don’t know why any conservative gives any thought to these Bushes. It’s not a good sign. I see more fissures on the horizon and the Tea Party and losses like Cantor are just the beginning.

Really. The Kennedy family comes to mind. And there’s a heck of a lot more of them causing trouble. From stealing elections to drowned women to the fabric of the traditional American way of life ripped apart. Don’t ask me for specifics. They’re far too numerous. Research for yourself.

Good evening Mary Katharine! Have you ever parachuted, aka, jumped out of a perfectly good plane?

Bmore on June 12, 2014 at 10:07 PM

The Five, on their program, interviewed the officer who made the jump with him. It was the third time they had done it together, I think he said he did their first tandem jump when GHWB was 85. My device seems to freeze on the Fox website so I can’t link it here, but I’m sure it’s easy to find.

Gee, compared to the current occupant of the People’s House, GHWB was downright patriotic and followed the Constitution to the letter.

awesome jump Mr. President. Happy Birthday.

rickv404 on June 12, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Funny how free you are to make that claim and how little impact he has apparently had in limiting your freedom to challenge his authoritarianism, or to have any authoritarian impact upon my life! Perhaps if he lives to 91 and jumps again, I’ll find the oppressive hand of government an ever heavier burden to bear because of him?

No. I doubt that sincerely. He served admirably. Not perfectly, but admirably.

Yes, yes we should exclusively have insufferable whiney little shit heels like you defining patriots for us. You can f@ck off too. Before the wino who bore you met the bus station transient who did the deed, this man flew in defense of world freedom and won a Distinguished Flying Cross doing it. He’s a hero and patriot to most all military men and women that fly.

You, on the other hand have done nothing. You’re not worth the electrons it took to produce the pitiful little rant you posted. Loud mouthed coward you are, I won’t expect another comment from you.

You’re dismissed.

Now that is what I call a smackdown

gophergirl on June 12, 2014 at 10:18 PM

It’s a very strange disconnect, and I have mixed feelings.

Both President’s Bush are clearly honorable men (nearly polar opposites to the scum that are Bubba and Barky) who seem to have conservative values and virtues — and seem to really love the country — yet their policies were generally statist.

All I can figure is that, unlike say Reagan, they were co-opted by the wrong advisers …

ShainS on June 12, 2014 at 10:19 PM

My closest cousin passed away last week….but that didn’t make news…

Screw these connected political media elites and their stories!

celt on June 12, 2014 at 10:19 PM

I would give quite a bit to have a Bush in the White House. At least I would know they weren’t deliberately trying to destroy the country. And make no mistake, we are in big, big trouble. Those obsessed with the establishment and tea party better get a clue. We need an army to win not Bergdahl-like deserters.

ricky404. George Bush Sr. has a few personal failings and many political faults. This jump was a culmination of neither, and you know that. Why are you going there?

bettycooper on June 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

George flew an Avenger over ChiChi-Jima, so low that the Japanese AA guns were firing DOWN at his plane.

Not a patriot?

ROFL

Bishop on June 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

The reason I don’t jump from airplanes or take hotair balloon rides: Because the stories of people suffering agonizing deaths while doing so happen just often enough for me to decide not to test the odds.

If Bush had not been rescued by the U.S.S Finback, he may have had to endure Chichi Jima (if the enemy found him). To know more about what our captured pilots experienced there read: Flyboys: A True Tale of Courage by Bradley.
