Obama declares world ‘less violent’ than ever

posted at 11:01 am on June 12, 2014 by Noah Rothman

During a White House event on Wednesday in which President Barack Obama took questions from Tumblr users, the president was asked to speculate on what his post-presidency would look like in a decade. During the president’s extemporaneous response to that question, he asserted that the world is as safe as it has ever been – ever.

[T]he truth of the matter is that for all the challenges we face, all the problems that we have, if you had to be — if you had to choose any moment to be born in human history, not knowing what your position was going to be, who you were going to be, you’d choose this time. The world is less violent than it has ever been. It is healthier than it has ever been. It is more tolerant than it has ever been. It is better fed then it’s ever been. It is more educated than it’s ever been.

Via Real Clear Politics:

In spite of the fact that the headlines would lead many to believe that this is an inexplicable assertion based on nothing more than wishful thinking, there is evidence to support Obama’s claim.

In a recent TED talk delivered by Harvard University psychology professor Steven Pinker, he claimed that research suggests that violence has been on the decline for thousands of years. It is true, he says, that the present moment is one of the least violent periods in our species existence.

He expanded on this theory in the pages of The Wall Street Journal in 2011, noting that violence is declining not only on the micro but the macro level.

RV-AE378_VIOLEN_G_20110923205707

It is a wonder, then, that Obama made this claim just a day after he insisted that America is plagued “off the charts” gun violence and school shootings which happen “now once a week.” This claim was picked up by Obama’s ideologically simpatico media outlets and advocacy organizations, some of which propagated the notion that there have been 74 school shootings in just the last 18 months.

But a dive into this research, chronicled by HotAir’s Erika Johnsen, shows that this figure was wildly inflated by the inclusion of suicides and gang-related accidental homicides. In fact, the true trends indicate that gun violence in America has been on the decline for decades.

It turns out the president is right to claim that the present moment in human existence is one of the least violent, even though he probably wishes he weren’t.

Obama Admin: ISIS Not As Dangerous As “Core Al-Qaeda”…

Delusional.

Some military officials now believe ISIS is the single greatest terrorist threat the U.S. and its allies face—stronger than the al Qaeda affiliates in Yemen or Africa and far more powerful than al Qaeda’s central leadership in Pakistan. Other senior U.S. officials say ISIS has yet to carry out any attacks directly targeting the U.S.

“It makes you want to kill yourself,” a senior U.S. official said of the intelligence on ISIS, which was presented by U.S. and Gulf allies during the May meeting in Jeddah.

“The world is less violent than it has ever been”

This is right up there with Hillary’s latest, when asked if there was any issue she “owned” during her term as Secretary of State:

“Oh absolutely, but the most important thing I did was to help restore America’s leadership around the world. We were flat on our back when I walked in there the first time. We were viewed as being untrustworthy, as violating our moral rules and values.”*

Frightening if they believe what they say. Even more so if they don’t.

*(Not that anyone else believes her. Gallup’s international surveys have seen approval of U.S. leadership fall from 49% in 2009 to 47% in 2010, 46% in 2011, and 41% in 2012 – Hillary’s last full year as Secretary of State. The Ukranians and Middle East don’t believe him, either.)

mjbrooks3 on June 12, 2014 at 11:20 AM

Decimated: reduced by 10%. Decimation was a motivational method employed by the Roman army. When a unit was decimated, they would line up and count off by 10s. Then the guy in charge would pick a number (1 through 10). If he picked “3″, everyone who counted off as a “3″ got killed where they stood.

I’d say this graph is misleading. It shows numbers of war deaths per 100,000 people. There are three major factors that have that have lowered war deaths since 1945:

(1) Nukes – we don’t have total wars anymore because it would essentially mean the end of man, thus wars are smaller and regionalized.

(2) Avoidance of civilian casualties. Whereas in wars of the past where civilians were targeted as part of the war machine, the modern trend is to avoid civilian casualties at all cost. Even the Russians realize there is a public and diplomatic price to pay for the indiscriminate killing of noncombatants.

(3) Advancements in medical care.

Sure, fewer war deaths are great, but there seems to be a global feeling that the wheels are coming off the bus. The Middle East is in turmoil. Iran is building nukes. North Korea is being ran by a madman. The Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Philipinos are coming close to blows over disputed territory. Russia just bit off a big chunk of the Ukraine and is massed at its border. Africa is a lawless continent, home to Islamic tyrants. Suddenly, the world feels a lot less safe.
