George Will: “Obama is, in fact, implementing the foreign policy he promised”

posted at 9:01 pm on June 12, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

In a way, yes, this is the foreign policy for which war-weary Americans voted, but it’s not quite the one President Obama assured they were getting — in which al Qaeda would be “decimated” and wariness of Russia would be a silly Cold-War throwback — is it?

ANDREW NAPOLITANO: The general makes so much sense, but it will go in one of Barack Obama’s ears and out the other because he is so committed to the political statements that he made when he ran for reelection in 2012 saying, ‘Iraq is one, Iraq is safe, and it’s because of me that that happened, and I’m bringing the troops home.’

GEORGE WILL: The president is in fact implementing the foreign policy he promised. It was entrenchment by one word, retreat by another. He is implementing the foreign policy that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton facilitated without expressing any qualms. He is implementing a policy that the American public has said in polls it wants right now. It wants it at least until it gets queasy by looking at the pictures they have been seeing tonight.

It wants it at least until it gets queasy by looking at the pictures they have been seeing tonight.

You would get queasy looking at what Saddam did, or Assad does, or what the Taliban does, or the FSA, ISIS, Pakistan, etc.

You don’t rule that part of the world with gentility if you want to survive. Information technology is increasingly bringing that reality into the living room, but there isn’t any political policy that will change it.

Every single attempt to make something better in the Muslim world has turned to ashes for the west. It’s them, not us.

Obama Released ISIS Leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi From US Custody In 2009

Why such a ferocious individual was deemed fit for release in 2009 is not known. One possible explanation is that he was one of thousands of suspected insurgents granted amnesty as the US began its draw down in Iraq.

Listen carefully to Juan Williams’ final remark; “The American people do not want to go to war AGAIN.” So the left is trying to set this up as a “new war.” Like we won the last one decisively because Obama said we did.

Did Obama promise us he would throw a 34-year ally under the bus in Egypt and bring the Muslim Brotherhood to power?

Did he promise that he would take action in Libya without congressional approval and create a failed state?

Did he promise that he would cut and run from Iraq leaving no residual force?

Did he promise that he would request Israel to return to pre-1967 borders?

There are more, but that’s just for starters.

wolly4321 on June 12, 2014 at 9:40 PM

Will isn’t entirely right. There’s a difference between getting mired up in a military operation and actually influencing events.

Ukraine didn’t have to go the way it’s going but Obama promised the opposition that we stood with them so they overthrew the government with no plan, and Russia marched in. Same with Egypt.

We didn’t need to put boots on the ground in Iraq either, but pay attention to the events. Good grief Wikipedia was posting the advancements of the ISIS in the region four months ago. It’s not like we shouldn’t have known what’s going on and tried to help Maliki be ready. Instead Obama was in a snit because Maliki was using his government to protect his tribe, which all Islamic leaders do, while the country was being run over by Jihadists.

The auto-censor wouldn’t let him post uck for foreing.

Bur seriously, folks:
Obama in his autobiography said that when the chips were down, he’d side with the Muslims. In every foreign policy decision, he’s always sided with the more Islamist side. In Egypt, it’s the Muslim Brotherhood. In Syria, he fiddled while the Islamist rebels wiped out the secularist rebels, then wanted to help the Islamists. In Iran, when the less-religious people were rebelling against the stolen election, he sided with the Islamist government.

So now when the Jihaddis are marching on a less-Islamist Bagdad, he’ll do what he can to hamstring Maleki. As much as he can get away with, anyway.

What would I do? Start funneling aid, and air support, to the Kurds. Tell Turkey what we’re doing (they’ll be furious), and ask them if they want ISIS in their back yard, or the Kurds? Help Jordan, which is already under pressure, and is probably high on ISIS’s to-do list. And of course Israel… and if they need to defend themselves with that-bomb-they-don’t-have, we don’t mind. ;)

Both he and the subject of his man crush miss read the will of the people.
No civilized country wants war. Any civilized country will be tired of war right after the first shot is fired. That does not mean that the people want to roll over and quiver in fear when they are threatened.
It is incumbent on a leader to make the citizens aware of the necessity for action when to do nothing threatens their well being.
