Chris Matthews scolds Ronan Farrow: Liberals need to stop looking down on tea partiers

posted at 2:31 pm on June 11, 2014 by Noah Rothman

MSNBC host Ronan Farrow earned a bit of a dressing down from his colleague, Chris Matthews, on Wednesday after he praised the uncommon intellectualism of some of the 2014 cycle’s insurgent candidates. When Farrow, who you may not have known used to serve in the State Department, said he found the academics like Dave Brat a “refreshing” change of pace from past tea party candidates, Matthews scolded him and others for their condescension.

“Here’s the other thing that looks non-establishment in these guys’ rhetoric,” Farrow said of Brat and Jack Trammell, the Democratic Party’s nominee for Congress in Virginia’s 7th district. “They are so hyper intellectual.”

While Farrow noted that Trammell received a better “rate my professor” score than Brat, he also remarked on the novelty of Brat’s desire to govern in the model of the political philosophers who founded the nation. “Is it rare to see that kind of brazen intellectualism, particularly in populist candidates like this?” Farrow asked Matthews.

“Well, first of all, I don’t think you can assume that the liberals are smarter than the conservative professors,” Matthews shot back. “I think that’s crazy talk, and it’s exactly the kind of attitude conservatives can’t stand.”

“This looking down our noses at tea party people has got to stop,” Matthews added. “They have a message, they’re as American as any liberal is, and they’re really angry of the failure of the system.”

“We can’t control the deficit, we can’t control the debt, we can’t control the border,” the Hardball host railed. “What is government good at?”

Just to hammer home the point that Brat’s victory not necessarily based on crass nativism, MSNBC host Chuck Todd noted that immigration reform with an eye toward extending citizenship to illegal immigrants will not pass until the economy fully rebounds. “When people have anxiety about their own personal future, the last thing they want is more competition for a smaller number of jobs,” Todd said.

Farrow closed by informing Matthews that he agreed with the substance of his reprimand.

They both have good ratemyprofessors ratings. Trammell’s only comes from six people, however. And according to ratemyprofessors Brat is “hotter” than Trammell, so there.

Brat’s victory was based on voters’ outrage over the traitorous push to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.

Very appreciative that the good and decent Virginia voters in his district showed up to retire the pro-amnesty traitor Cantor.

So many ways to answer this …

1) This is a business. MSNBC is a failing business. Two links in a row highlighting what NO ONE is watching while every other media outlet is covering this story suggests ineptitude or intent.

2)This does not even have the redeeming characteristic of being ABOUT Brat – this is “Hey, look at what Bozo is saying!” coverage when regardless of what Bozo is saying in this particular clip, you KNOW he is going back into “Tingles” mode the next time the fluorescent lights flicker.

3) First week on the job and you are intentionally NOT reaching to show off your insights, connections, etc.? I used to run a global organization – this would be like a new office manager calling me to tell me he just alphabetized his employees’ performance reviews (I would then call my regional manager and ask WTF?)

The Democrats selected a guy named Jack Trammell, a sociology prof also at Randolph-Macon, reportedly on Sunday, (not a primary, but by party leadership) so they didn’t have anyone filed before Monday. As late as yesterday Trammell’s filing had not made a dent in the news cycle, leading to some confusion about whether Democrats had a candidate filed in time.

I’m guessing Trammell’s major qualification for the nod was his willingness to be a sacrificial lamb running against Cantor. I doubt there were a lot of folks lining up for that run. Now he’s got a legitimate shot, given the possibility a neophyte will make a fatal error. But this district is very red, so unless Brat falls flat on his face he’s a huge underdog.

novaculus on June 11, 2014 at 4:39 PM

It’s hard to remember way back when, but Chris Matthews endorsed GWB in 2000. He was MSNBCs Center-Left answer to Center-Right Bill O’ back in the day. He didn’t turn batshit crazy liberal until after the invasion of Iraq and MSNBCs own sharp turn to the left with the sucess of Olberman.

Matthews will be hosting a new show on FOX called “SHOCKED”, where he will have an interactive graphic on constant display behind his rather large cranium which shows a constantly changing ‘Tingle Level’ for political breaking news pieces. When one of the political pieces rises above a certain threshold level above that of ‘Tingle’ it crosses into SHOCKED territory….Matthews will then immediately don a tinfoil ‘hat’ and stick his finger into a wall socket in the FOX studios….As of this posting it is believed that Matthews has signed on for one show, and one show only.

If Tingles doesn’t cool it, Hillary Clinton will have a meeting with him to set him straight.

Someone scared. Make nicey-nice with rights! Revolution on horizon, me no want to get hanged!

Matthews just read the tea leaves and November is looking scary.

Time to make nice with the baggers, er…the very nice, tea party patriot intellectual people.

This may surprise some, but Mathews used to have the best political show on TV. Mark Levin used to come on regularly. Mathews was fair to Republicans and tough on Dems. He clearly insinuated he voted for George W. Bush in 2000.

Then he went bonkers in 2005 and has been a frothing at the mouth hate monger most of the time since. An odd ball Democrat trying to help Obama. Not sure what is going on in that fat head of his.

So that’s what Matthews looks like on a bad acid trip!

BUT, my family says I often babble incoherently after one of my epileptic “events”.
Call the doctors, Chris needs an immediate EEG and MRI!
Tell the paramedics to pump him full of phenytoin, kepra and whatever else they have, the mans in danger!

For my brothers and sisters in the 7th: ya done Virginia proud.
Way to Rock the HOUSE!
