Bloomberg’s “grassroots” gun control group: There have been 74 school shootings since Newtown

posted at 3:01 pm on June 11, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

After the failure of his Mayors Against Illegal Guns group to sway public opinion in favor of more gun control, Michael Bloomberg announced earlier this year that he would be funneling at least $50 million to a new, “grassroots” organization now called Everytown For Gun Safety with the hope of “outmuscling” that scourge of civilized society, the National Rifle Association, and their ill-begotten political influence (because of, you know, their five million official members and millions more sympathizers). In what is only Everytown’s latest display of choosing deliberate exaggerations, lies, and scare tactics over honest conversation, the group recently updated their running list claiming that there have now been at least 74 school shootings just since the massacre at Newtown in December of 2012, which a HuffPo editor then helpfully mapped out:

Here’s the Washington Post‘s version, too. Any school shooting is an unacceptable tragedy for which we should be looking for practical, effective solutions, and an average of more than one school shooting every week is all the more eye-poppingly horrifying. It sounds like we have an outright epidemic on our hands — but, have there really been 74 “school shootings” in just eighteen months? Charles C. Johnsen, a.k.a. @ChuckCJohnson on the Twitters, took a closer look at the various crimes that Everytown has been lumping into its list, and unsurprisingly, quite a few are undeserving of the designation of a “school shooting.” Here’s a sampling of some of his research:

And on, and on, and on, until…

It certainly seems like suicides and gang violence should be delineated from “school shootings” (in which the “mass” is pretty much implied) as separate problems, no? Unless, of course, your real goal is to falsely portray an America in which wildly violent, deadly, and indiscriminate gun violence is increasing — rather than the actual trend in which it has for two decades been sharply decreasing.

Hey I don’t ascribe to the lunacy that is originalism. I’m just saying, for those that do, including no small number of gun nuts, that originally the 2nd was intended to guarantee your right to muskets and that’s it.

The right to bear “arms” doesn’t mean just guns you know. More deaths occur each year from clubs and other blunt objects than from guns. I personally own six different baseball bats, three pairs of nunchakus, three bo staffs, and two sets of golf clubs. Feeling safe are you?

I’m late to the party as usual. I own a .22 magnum rifle, a .22 pistol, a .50 Desert Eagle, and 2 S&W 500 Magnums. None of them have killed or injured anyone, whether by accident or by design. My daughter owns another 4 guns, at least two of them loaded and unlocked in her home at all times.

Obviously, you and your daughter have never gone canoeing with Bishop. /

You certainly know that when the British were marching on Lexington and Concord, they were planning on confiscating the cannon held there? Privately owned cannon.

Well, after reading the comments I have to deduce that “Tlaloc” is quite the typical, ignorant, naïve liberal who doesn’t know history or why the 2nd Amendment was put in place.

The stated concern of the left over guns is people being killed. Overeating not only kills more people but causes a variety of associated illnesses. Using their logic for guns the government should regulate how much and what types of food people eat.

Same goes for cars, alcohol, swimming, boating, and just life in general. Perhaps liberals should mandate everyone stay in their homes, never go out and eat only what government officials deliver to their homes. A 1200 calorie a day diet should do the trick. No one will have enough energy to commit crime and be super thin and healthy!

Tlaloc thinks himself way too smart to be concerned with such a trivial matter. He said the founders only wanted us to have muskets, even though muskets were state of the art at the time making the average citizen as well armed as any soldier.

And the 1st guarantees freedom of speech but doesn’t protect us from some of the weapons grade stupid that goes along with it

Kowboy on June 12, 2014 at 11:36 AM

Noticed that the TV news was repeating this story as fact, when we all know the media is on top of every one of these mass shooting events in the hope of finding a tea party angle.

There have been a few lower level incidents but its funny how many are in fact perpetrated by disaffected leftists with mental/ drug issues

And therefore the 1st only guarantees your right to speak and hand write letters – so you have NO right to free speech over telephones, computers, telegraphs, modern printing presses, injet/laserjet printing, radios, television,…….

And, the latest “school shooting” was ended by a good guy with a gun…
