As militants advance in Iraq, U.S. Embassy in Baghdad readies evacuation

posted at 9:31 pm on June 11, 2014 by Noah Rothman

According to U.S. sources who spoke with The Blaze reporter Sara Carter, the United States Embassy in Baghdad is preparing plans to facilitate the evacuation of that massive facility as Islamic militant groups continue their blitz across that country.

“The U.S. official told TheBlaze that the U.S. Embassy, United Nations and other foreign organizations with a presence in Iraq are ‘preparing contingency plans to evacuate employees,’” The Blaze reported.

A counterterrorism expert added that the level of violence in Iraq is at levels “not seen since 2007,” just prior to the implementation of the “surge” strategy which temporarily pacified the growing insurgency in that country.

The $750 million complex is the world’s largest foreign embassy facility and was built to house tens of thousands of government employees and contractors, but it has not been fully staffed since the end of 2013.

The al-Qaeda-linked group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) have already captured the cities of Mosul, Tikrit, and Fallujah, and may be setting their sights on the Iraqi capital. The group’s aim is to create a pan-Islamic state that stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the Iranian border.

The State Department has warned American citizens against traveling to Iraq amid the escalating violence.

Nothing like sending brave soldiers into war with handcuffs on (insane ROE, essentially valuing the lives of enemy civilians over our own combatants) with no intention of winning it as surely and quickly as possible — resulting in their senseless maiming and deaths.

The emasculation and infantilization of America proceeds unabated, as reflected primarily in their so-called “leaders” …

That said, she did a terrible job with the illegal immigration segment. Evidently, she’s in the Brit Hume club that feels that we have to provide all these kids with foster homes and citizenship. At a minimum, there seem to be two categories of kids: one group has been sent by extended family to join their parents, and the other group has been sent by the parents themselves. The second group should be fed, sheltered, and sent home to their parents. The other group should be reunited with their parents who are in the US, and then the family sent home.

I tend to agree, although Saddam Hussein was pretty unpalatable, like another Hussein. Having said that, once we had “conquered” the place, it behooved us to maintain our investment with a minor maintenance cost, and certainly not do what Obama is doing which is giving it all away to a fate much worse for us than if Saddam was still there, unhanged.

ISIS has publicly stated that it wants to set up a caliphate in part to prepare for new attacks on the US.

And since our southern border is wide open (except for the parts the drug cartels control). ISIS shouldn’t have any trouble getting a dirty bomb in. Maybe Iran will lend them some nuclear material courtesy of Obama’s diplomatic thaw with Iran.

We are well and truly boned. Iraq Signals Openness to U.S. Airstrikes Against al Qaeda, U.S. Officials Say

WASHINGTON—Iraq has privately signaled to the Obama administration that it would allow the U.S. to conduct airstrikes with drones or manned aircraft against al Qaeda militant targets on Iraqi territory, senior U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The Obama administration is considering a number of options, including the possibility of providing “kinetic support” for the Iraqi military fighting al Qaeda rebels who seized two major cities north of Baghdad this week, according to a senior U.S. official who added that no decisions have been made.

Officials declined to say whether the U.S. would consider conducting airstrikes with drones or manned aircraft.

Iraq has long asked the U.S. to provide it with drones that could be used in such strikes, but Washington has balked at supplying them, officials said.

An Epic Expression of Failed COIN Strategy; Fallujah falls to Al Qaida Factions [Link to John Bernard]

What is so damnably frustrating about this is that too many of us to
list, foretold of this, years ago. And if there were any left in this
country who still held onto the belief that either our civilian
leadership or the left-listing General Grade Officers which populate the
upper echelon of our Military structure were somehow visionaries and
intellectuals, this latest manifestation of a failure of foresight
should hopefully drive a spike through the heart of that lingering
belief.

Not once – but twice, Marines, Sailors and Soldiers were asked to lay
down their lives, “liberating” Al Anbar and most specifically,
Fallujah; the second time being tightly restrained by the rigid ROE
(Rules of Engagement) borne of the incomprehensibly idiotic paradigm of
COIN! And now, two years later, that effort and all that blood, proves
to have been for naught!

Third, it is not our place, constitutionally or even morally, to
save any people from themselves. Civil wars and internal strife are, by
definition, internal. In our haste to re-establish some semblance of
order in a country we had invaded, choices were made which changed the
dynamics of the balance of power, giving control to the Shiite majority,
placing that nation in league with Iran and at odds with Al Qaida which
is principally Sunni.

These continued ill-advised efforts to massage the troubles of
cultures in the Islamic world are proceeding with bad advice about those
cultures and their religion and continue to threaten the well-being of
American War Fighters who are continually compelled to act as a highly
restricted police force rather than this nation’s Warrior Guard.

We have literally wasted the lives and the wellbeing of far too many
of this generation, chasing after something that cannot be achieved;
improved relations with a people who will only be satisfied when the
last vestige of Infidel’s corpses are rotting in the ground.

VorDaj on June 11, 2014 at 9:54 PM

Now Taliban style Iran-linked crazies are going to take over the whole place, including the oil assets.

ISIL is virulently ANTI-Shi’ite.

If ISIL takes over Baghdad, Iran will invade southern Iraq to provide safe haven for Shi’ites.

The Kurds can take care of themselves. They have Israeli advisers and would likely ask for Israel commandos, if they haven’t already. They don’t care what the Arab world thinks.

The surveillance technology has evolved so phenomenally since 2001 that ISIL won’t be able to carry out a 9/11 style attack, but they may settle for Westgate Mall mass shootings or suicide bombings.

A lot of people are worried about the militarization of our cops. If ISIL takes over Iraq, we just might be glad we have cops with MRAPs and M240 machine guns.

You ain’t seen nothing yet. With Russia and China moving away from the U.S. petrodollar, the possibility is that the Dollar will be devalued greatly and when/if international economic collapse ensues, Americans will no longer be welcomed in many places abroad. If we can’t supply them with a steady flow of trade Dollars, nor handouts (foreign “aid”), nor an umbrella of military protection, then why the heck would they want to have anything to do with us?

Obummer knows all this. What is done and not done are calculated moves necessary to destabilize the existing world power, military and economic structures so that a new NWO/Socialist one can be ushered in. This democracy stuff is nonsense to these types. Read Mein Kampf for instance. The masses are incapable of choosing the best leadership. The best leadership (to them) are the cream that rises (and fights) their way to the top…and win. And if they are the wealthiest and have the most control, then Providence (or natural selection if you want) has clearly chosen them to be in control.

They saw the writing on the wall for the U.S. decades ago…maybe Vietnam had much to do with that…maybe that left vs. right division that came about made it more clear to them? The rats are leaving the ship, and they’ll gorge themselves on whatever victuals are left down in the hold before swimming away. We’ll be left with the bilge.

Scrumpy, for whatever your profession may be, if a total stranger started addressing others on sites you visited, contributed to, and wrote hideous lies about you and your work accomplishments — stating you’d “stolen” work from others (which is among what “cozmo” has written about me) — and then trolled you with crass remarks about you on another site (this one, for example), would you feel so happy about that person afterward?

Some people are indecent and “cozmo” is one of those.

Sad thing is that most Americans don’t care. They are glad to have wiped their hands of the whole Iraq affair. They don’t think far enough ahead to see the implications. Obama’s popularity won’t take a hit.

Mark1971 on June 11, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Why couldn’t we have stayed out?

Because Iraq had to be invaded and the other hussein had to be taken out of power. There is no question about this.

Was the Iraq worth it? NO.

coolrepublica on June 11, 2014 at 9:36 PM

Yes, it was. In more than a few ways. The other hussein had to be neutralized. It was only Bush going into Iraq that scared the cr@p out of Q’Daffy and got him to cough up his nuke program, which, need I remind you, led directly to the AQ Khan nuclear network, meaning that more serious WMDs were found and stopped because of the Iraq War than anyone had even imagined to be in Iraq.

Don’t confuse Barky’s idiocy with the Iraq War and the reasons for it. Barky set out to injure and harm American interests from the first day he slimed into office and he’s done that. Consistently. But that has nothing to do with why we invaded Iraq (which was technically at war with us, as they had broken the cease-fire since the day it was signed and were shooting at our planes daily) and what actually came from that.

Barky is making an even bigger mess of Afghanistan and has made the whole of the middle east a ticking bomb with his support for his buddy jihadis and the spread of pan-islamism through the arab world.

You routinely show up here after you’ve exhausted your exploits twisting the minds of school kids in Texas.

I’m sorry for the school kids in Texas. And kids everywhere.

The only public you “service” are the gnats in your hair. I understand why wearing pants is so uncomfortable for you but at least spare the vacant lot homeless next to your hovel your infections.

The State Department has warned American citizens against traveling to Iraq amid the escalating violence.

Damn- I guess I’ll have to come up with a plan B for that bachelor party.

The $750 million complex is the world’s largest foreign embassy facility and was built to house tens of thousands of government employees and contractors, but it has not been fully staffed since the end of 2013.

What’s another 3/4 billion?

PaddyORyan on June 11, 2014 at 9:59 PM

4000 of our brave troops died in vain and tens of thousands of our brave troops were injured in vain… All this because this most incompetent President in history of our Republic decided not to leave a residual force in Iraq to exactly prevent exactly what is happening now i.e. the rise of Al Qaeda terrorists after we defeated them in 2007-2008… It will take us years, a lot of blood and treasure, to fix the incredible damage this fool Obama caused us in the world not to mention the incredible damage he did domestically…

What about terrorists aquiring Iraqi oil fields? The next two years at least we won`t be hard core drilling for our own oil and after that, the new oil will take a while to get on-line ( I think ).

Plus, they`ll have all that cash for some serious bio/nuke weapons.
