Were the Vegas murderers inspired by ‘fright-wing, hatriot politics?’

posted at 7:01 pm on June 10, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Amanda and Jerad Miller were reportedly methamphetamine addicts, paranoid conspiracy theorists, and cop killers. Over the weekend, the couple took the lives of two Las Vegas police officers before turning the gun on themselves. Beyond being deranged, the couple was apparently also fiercely mistrustful of the federal government.

They were attracted to the conservative movement’s causes and were willing to believe even the most unfounded accusations of government tyranny, including claims that the Bureau of Land Management was oppressing Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy. Every broad-based movement has its demented members, and the Millers were decidedly on the conservative side of that ledger.

In a grotesque display of symbolism, the two killers reportedly draped Gasden flags over the bodies of the police officers they killed and left one with a copy of Jerad Miller’s swastika-stamped manifesto. These symbols, one signifying small, decentralized government and the other representing precisely the opposite, are linked only in the minds of those already deeply suspicious of the modern conservatism.

Enter The Daily Beast’s Editor-in-Chief, John Avlon.

Appearing on CNN, Avlon insisted that “fright-wing, hatriot politics” inspired the Vegas shooters – a serious charge supported by compelling but nevertheless circumstantial evidence.

It was a clever line lifted from his column in The Daily Beast. In that post, Avlon correctly attacks the Millers as “wingnuts,” derides their penchant for listening to “fright-wing radio hosts” like the conspiracist Alex Jones, and notes the couple’s suspicious affinity for conservative advocacy groups like Heritage Foundation, FreedomWorks, and the NRA.

On CNN, Avlon blamed “hyper-partisan, agitated talk,” and not simply mental illness, for inspiring these apparently otherwise well-adjusted individuals to believe murdering police officers would spark a revolution.

“These are the wages of hate,” Avlon wrote. “The politics of incitement has a real cost when it comes in contact with armed alarmists who cross the small but decisive dividing line from being willing to die for a cause and being willing to kill for one.”

MSNBC host Krystal Ball took Avlon’s logic a step further, while being careful to avoid stating aloud the obvious conclusion to which this thought process would lead.

“The constant warnings that our very freedoms and liberty are under assault can provoke the unhinged,” she said on her program on Tuesday. “It can lead them to believe that extreme action, murderous action, is just and patriotic. It allows them to cloak their crimes, in their minds at least, in the noble cloth of revolution.”

Just like movies and video games can provoke those who are already disturbed to engage in violence, the theory goes, political speech can have the same effect. So, if some political speech is problematic, so much so that lives are at risk, and those propagating supposedly inciting rhetoric will not cease their activities voluntarily, what is to be done?

None dare answer that question honestly.

We live in an era in which politicians and bureaucrats regularly engage in the curtailing of the average citizens’ salt or sugar intake in the name of public safety. It is an era in which congressional Democrats are pushing limits on the first amendment, not to address a societal ill, but because it would be popular with their base voters. The technocrats are busy at work protecting you from yourself.

Amanda and Jerad Miller were deeply disturbed people. They were criminals, drug addicts, and, yes, anti-government fanatics. The latter condition is receiving a lot of attention today in left-of-center media while the former charges are being overlooked or undervalued.

Too many are more comfortable attacking what they perceive to be dangerous thought. Meanwhile, far too few are asking how these dangerous people slipped through the cracks.

Of course, MSNBC’s wide eyed shock about “anti-government” sentiment ignores the fact that our country was BUILT on suspicion of government and that it is entirely within the American character to distrust government.

I submit they were “anti-government fanatics” because they were druggies and criminals, and would be such under any form of government, not because they had “conservative” or even “libertarian” bones in their bodies.

One thing that methamphetamine does is causes paranoia. Like those mentally ill with conditions such as schizophrenia, these paranoid delusions are often about the govt – police, CIA, FBI and helicopters.

It’s a chicken and egg thing. Were these folks virulent, violent anti-government, anti-Americans like Obama’s buddies Ayer and Dorhn, before becoming meth-heads, or after?

Excellent post Noah. Excellent.

Hyper-partisanship is a big problem. Some people like the millers from the moment the wake up tot he moment they sleep all they think about is how everybody else BUT them is wrong about everything in politics.

If you are going to be a hyperpartisan, the lesson here is don’t do drugs. It magnifies EVERYTHING and drives you over the edge. Heck, don’t even smoke or drink.

Later, on his Google+ account, he posted that he and Amanda “sold everything” they had and quit their jobs to join the Bundys’ fight, but they were shunned by the group because of his felony convictions.

Jerad Dwain Miller had a lengthy criminal history dating back at least to 2000 that saw him in and out of jail on felony and misdemeanor charges in both Washington state and in his home state of Indiana.

In 2010 and 2007 he was convicted of drug dealing and possession charges related to marijuana.

They painted themselves like clowns of anarchy and took to the web to spew threats and violent fantasies about gunning down police officers.

You can read bout these putzes here.

New HotAir blogger Noah Rothman reminds me of Mary Katharine Ham (who, like Rothman, is also pro-amnesty, btw), since both seem more concerned with what prominent liberals say and think than they are interested in advocating for conservative principles. Both seem to go out of their way to say whenever they think high profile liberal commentators say things that they agree with. It’s as if they want to be seen by liberals as “reasonable” and “not one of those nutty tea partier types.”

Sad that Rothman and Ham appear more interested in being liked by liberal media elites than in promoting conservative principles.

John the Libertarian on June 10, 2014 at 7:06 PM

In an earlier thread I cited a case of a dude whacked out on meth out in the state O’bama claims to have been born in.

He dropped his 23 month old son from an overpass onto a Honolulu freeway, where the kid was immediately hit and killed by a 2 ton delivery truck.

Meth is a huge problem out there, as evidenced by more than one episode of “Dog the Bounty Hunter”. And one of the reasons it’s such a huge problem is because the ultra-Far-Left Hawai’i Supreme Court has repeatedly refused to allow the cops out there to use the same law enforcement tactics their Mainland counterparts have been using against Meth for years. “Privacy” is the Activist Justices’ explanation.

Oh, and it’s a Far Blue State, too. Been run by the Dems since O’bama was born, as a matter of fact.

WRONG. They were “attracted” to the possibility of waging violent crime, that possibility being authored from their own insanity.

It was not a case of something “conservative movement’s causes” being appealing to those deranged persons (who went on to m*rd*r Las Vegas cops and residents and then themselves), it was that these were two extremely deranged individuals looking for a venue to do that very thing.

Bundy Ranch asked them to leave the place for that reason: they were deranged.

That “anti-government sentiment” that MSNBC loves to lean upon when rationalizing why crazy people engage in crazy actions against others and themselves is something that specifically categorizes the Left: being violently “against” or “anti” the population in general.

It’s called antisocialism but run to extremes, it’s violent against, first, selected individuals who are perceived as representing some point that deranged people are obsessed with and secondly, then, amplified outward to general social animosity toward others.

The Right, or “Conservative,” idea of “limited government” IS NOT THE SAME AS “anti-government” or, in other words, those who revile social organizations, human society or who target individuals for individual destruction to illustrate hatreds toward others in general.

The Left’s various “type casting” campaigns against those who they target as being opposed to “type casted classes” is a prime example of that level of antisocialism that is present among the Left. By type-casting “classes” and insisting on their isolated privileges and such, they are and continue to force antisocialistic attitudes and then go about, when unabated, forcefully even violently “enforcing” against anyone who they target as oppositional.

Bmore on June 10, 2014 at 7:58 PM

I repeat, “anti government” is not at all the same as seeking-limited-government.

Government overreach is a characteristic OF the “anti-government” beliefs held by most people on the Left. To seek all-reaching “government” IS Leftwing because it’s an effort to replace human or societal controls with “government” demand or force.

When an overreach by government is present, you have a “one-profile” type or antisocial presence by government and that is and has been,, throughout human history,, a result of the Leftwing need to dominate others.

Limited government, on the other hand, respects the individual controls and even objections by individual ideals and values.

What occurred at the Bundy Ranch, specifically, was government overreach: destruction of private property “because it was deemed offensive to government” as was the use of the property itself.

Bundy’s legal context was beside the point as far as government was concerned; if it had not been so, the overreaching government would have taken a sane approach to the situation. Instead, they opted to send in the guns and make an unnecessarily violent presence against individuals.

Judge_Dredd on June 10, 2014 at 8:06 PM

MSNBC host Krystal Ball took Avlon’s logic a step further, while being careful to avoid stating aloud the obvious conclusion to which this thought process would lead.

“The constant warnings that our very freedoms and liberty are under assault can provoke the unhinged,” she said on her program on Tuesday. “It can lead them to believe that extreme action, murderous action, is just and patriotic. It allows them to cloak their crimes, in their minds at least, in the noble cloth of revolution.”

That’s MSNBC’s persistently rotten encouragement to just shut up and don’t confront offenses.

The only people who assume that societal complaints are reason to act out violently against others — and it usually also involves against themselves eventually — are people with mental disturbance. Organic or psychological, either way, it takes the presence of DISEASE in the mind or brain to assume that “warnings” represent cause-to-destroy.

A lot of that emotional excess, via verbal throw-up, present in Leftmedia is due to their needs to gush-out hyperbole. It leads to frantic speech, otherwise called nonsense but offensive nonsense that only contributes to the problems they’re feigning “to discuss”.

It’s not discussion, however, it’s another form of violence upon others.

Combined with the Left’s cult of personality and political demands, it leads to cruel if not often irrational accusations-posed-as-fact.

I would not characterize these two murderers as conservatives any more than I would characterize Barack Obama as being American. The two sicko were anarchists and your guess is as good as mine as to what in the heck the Dog Eater is, but he sure as hell is not an American. Methinks Mr. Rothman has spent too much time breathing that liberal air over at Mediaite.

bimmcorp on June 10, 2014 at 7:17 PM

I agree with you about the two deranged and now deceased killers.

But as to Rothman, he is speaking TO the Left, is my guess. Using their “issue parameters” so to speak to approach this issue.

Leftwingers are captured by their wrong presumptions — “the Right/Conservatives are the enemies” is their primary and very wrong assumption and it transpires into all who for any issue are aligned with something that the Left can plaster onto “the Right” like “guns” and those who use them.

Obviously, to everyone else, the two culprits in this Las Vegas violence were deranged, sick people. That they’d try to associate themselves with others, well, that’s what deranged people do. Photos of those two dressed up in cartoon costumes and posing as if they were, seriously, “heroes,” the drugs, the efforts to associate with media stormed property upsets…it doesn’t get any more insane than that, same as every single one of similarly deranged people who have committed similar, violent crimes.

It has nothing to do with “Rightwing”. But to the Left, all and any acting-out is deemed “Rightwing” just as it’s deemed “not Leftwing;” < meanwhile, reality proves that, in and of itself, to be deranged reasoning by the Left.

Judge_Dredd on June 10, 2014 at 8:22 PM

Yes, I agree, as I wrote earlier. The Left, however, places immense focus if not obsessive focus on demands that “all” people, every single person, must be EITHER aligned with Leftwing social presumptions, assumptions and if not so, then, they’re the enemy.

This is apparent, emotionally and psychologically, in all aspects of Leftwing goals. It’s all about dominating if not eradicating the individual position.

And to the Left, that means, or is synonymoous with, “the political.”

Believe in life at conception? The value and defense of those pre-born? To the Left, that ‘means’ to the Left, “you hate women.”

Amplify that throughout Leftwing thought. It’s all about what’s popular, what the Trend is demanded to be and must be involved in…

No wonder so many on the Left are quite so mentally and/or emotionally disturbed.

June 16, 2007 – Criminal Recklessness, pointing a firearm, intimidation, possession marijuana, possession paraphernalia.
