Hillary aide rides to her defense: Her ‘set of expectations’ not those of middle class

posted at 1:01 pm on June 10, 2014 by Noah Rothman

The dispatches from the ever-deepening hole Hillary Clinton dug for herself on Monday keep coming. The latest defense of Clinton’s claim that she and her husband were “dead broke” and “struggled” after leaving the White House comes from a former aide who probably just made an already bad situation for the former secretary of state a little bit worse.

Kiki McLean, a former spokesperson for Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and a veteran of Democratic politics, joined CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield on Tuesday where she explained that the Clintons are just better than you.

In the clip, via The Weekly Standard, McLean defended Clinton’s remarks first by insisting that she clearly understands the concerns of middle class Americans.

“There’s nothing fair with anybody who would insinuate that Hillary Clinton doesn’t understand the struggle of a middle class family,” McLean said. “She certainly grew up with one. And she gave a statement of fact when President Clinton and Mrs. Clinton left the White House, they were dead broke.”

McLean did, however, note that the Clintons do not necessarily share the concerns of middle class Americans.

“Now,” McLean continued, “they have a life and a set of expectations that are different, and they’ve been fortunate to make some money.”

When you think about it, this clarification probably isn’t helping much at all.

While I love seeing Hillary hoist by her own hubris, I can’t stand this idea that a leader needs to “understand” this or that group’s “suffering” or “problems”.

I don’t care if a president understands my financial woes. I care if that person understands economics, understands the constitution, understands the purpose of limited gov’t, understands free enterprise, etc.

Whether or not they “understand” the daily grind joe-sixpack endures is meaningless.

this is one of the great problems in democracy, the idea that we have to be able to “relate” to the candidate and that the candidate must “relate” to us. It’s silly. It’s meaningless.

Which is why we have endless bios of politicians explaining how they grew up poor, with poor working-class parents, etc., etc. Which, even if true, was usually 50 years prior. Usually the politician has been living on easy street with the rich and powerful for the last 50 years of their life, but they want to pretend that the fact that their family was “poor” when he was 10 informs his outlook today.

So stupid.

And, what’s to understand? You either make a decent living and live within your means or you do not.

What are “middle class struggles” that the gov’t can solve (outside of lowering taxes, reducing regulation, etc.)?

to the extent we pile on this nonsense, we are buying into the left’s assumptions, which is that the gov’t should and can solve everyone’s problems – if we just “understand” those problems well enough.

Just like with all the other vampires and leeches in our political system – these elitists are getting rich off a system that is supposed to encourage self government – not a class of people with “different expectations”…

We need to vote every single incumbent out of office and start with a clean slate. We need more regular working class Americans involved in our government.
