CBS poll shows 55% of veterans disapprove of Taliban 5 swap

posted at 8:01 am on June 10, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Ten days after staging a splashy Rose Garden announcement of the prisoner swap that sent five high-ranking Taliban commanders to freedom in exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, it’s safe to say that the attempt to garner good PR has flopped. A new CBS poll on the subject finds a plurality of Americans disapprove of the deal, 45/37, which rises to a majority among the veterans Obama clearly hoped to impress:

Just over a week after U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was freed by the Taliban, a CBS News Poll shows 45% of Americans disapprove of the deal that saw him released in exchange for five Taliban militants, while 37% approve of it. About one in five do not have an opinion.

Views differ by political party: most Republicans disapprove of the deal, while just over half of Democrats approve. Among those who have served in the military, 55% disapprove of the prisoner swap.

Most Americans — 56% — say the U.S. paid too high a price to secure Bergdahl’s release. Among veterans, that figure rises to 65%.

CBS has not yet released the full polling data, but not much about what they have released can make the White House happy. The only support Obama gets for the deal is from fellow Democrats, and even that’s rather soft. Only a bare plurality thinks Obama got reasonable terms for the swap, 42/39. Among all Americans, a near-majority of 49% believe it will increase the threat of terrorism against the US, and 40% think it will have no effect. The number of people who believe it will lower the threat of terrorism against the US comes to a whopping three percent.

On the question of informing Congress, the news gets much worse for the President. Despite insisting that the speed of the deal made notification and consultation impossible, 72% of respondents think Obama should have complied with the law. On this question, Obama doesn’t even get support from fellow Democrats, 55% of whom think he should have worked with Congress on the issue.

In that context, it’s not difficult to see why the House has decided to look into Obama’s refusal to comply with the law:

If Obama conceived the Rose Garden event as a way to ingratiate himself with veterans after the VA scandal, it’s backfired in a big way. The same can be said about doing this trade as a means to advance his goal of shutting down the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, because this release of the biggest non-AQ detainees has made that goal radioactive all over again — especially in the arrogant manner in which it was handled.

The mitigating circumstance there would be as much as Hillary wants to run as Bill’s third term, she’s going to have to run at least in part as Obama’s third term, and share the spotlight with him at least through te 2016 DNC convention. The more he decides to arbitrarily ignore not just the desires of Congress but public sentiment as well, the more problems he creates for Team Clinton, which can’t rebuff Obama harshly or risk dampening down African-American turnout to dangerously low levels in swing states in ’16.

I understand there’s a nice bus station in Phoenix that’s accepting those released by the regime if Pockystan won’t take them back.
We also know that they paid a $ ransom because they haven’t denied it. With all the leaks these days, the regime doesn’t want a denial to go on the record.

Veterans don’t count anymore….if you’re a crying illegal alien from Mejico or El Salvador THEN you are golden!

The people co-ordinating the (latest) illegal alien invasion of the U.S. are coaching the illegals to claim to BP that they’re “afraid” to return to their home country (even though most of them are coming here for economic reasons). Once they’ve said that, BP is required to get them a hearing. From there, it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to “refugee” status, which qualifies them not only for a quick visa, but also for lots of taxpayer-funded (i.e. welfare) benefits for which “immigrants” are not legally eligible.

This is a very deliberate and well-planned effort to exploit the loosely-defined “refugee” provisions of the U.S. immigration laws, to bring in unlimited numbers of new foreign welfare-dependents.

Perfect storm coming for the dems in 2016. A detached aloof President who will increasingly make decisions for his own “legacy” as he sees it, sinking any democrat presidential candidate to shake lose of said legacy. None of the democrat contenders are exceptionally good politicians, some are pretty terrible, so this legacy will stick. In what should be a counterbalance to the GOP’s increasingly wave looking 2014, 2016 for the dems isn’t looking very good. And 2018 will be stronger for the GOP.

In the end, stupid can’t keep winning. Of course it can hurt alot of people in the meantime.

In this era of feelings, the logic of the dangers of releasing Taliban leaders to create more mayhem is lost on a certain percentage of people until they actually create more mayhem, and even then only if they can do it in America. The only way the touchy-feely demographic would get angry before that is if Bergdhal came home and immediately started trashing America in general, completely harshing their mellow about getting a missing soldier home (and it’s no doubt that fear that’s going to keep the White House from putting Beau before the media for a while, until they’re sure he’s not going to go rogue on them and blow the PR event).

Democrats have to stop accusing us of massacres, “excusing” our “crimes” for us because we’re too stupid to know better, losing our wars, and releasing our enemies to kill more of us before veterans are even going to listen politely while they attempt to ingratiate themselves.

Zoomie on June 10, 2014 at 9:03 AM

The problem with Obama and his team is also afflicting many officers in the military.

I am a Sergeant Major and have noticed a trend, anecdotal yes, but a trend I noticed nonetheless. Officers are more liberal than enlisted. Enlisted are more conservative than officers.

I can explain it because of Basic Training. In basic training, we punished in mass for the sins of the one. One guy doesn’t make his bunk, we all get dusted off. One guy is late for formation, we all get dusted off. One guy.

This teaches us personal responsibility and how our actions affect other Soldiers. Soldiers expect once we leave Basic, that other Soldiers have learned this lesson. If they haven’t, they are Blue Falcon (google it).

Berdahl is the worst Blue Falcon. His fellow Soldiers didn’t get dusted off…some got killed or disabled and others were put in danger solely because of his actions. So we look at a guy like Bergdahl getting captured and we revert back to Kindergarten teachings: You get what you get, don’t throw a fit.

He deserted and got captured. THe enlisted corps doesn’t care. Bergdahl needs to take personal responsibility for his actions and accept the consequences. We see him doing that and are fine with it.

Officers are like the President…feel everyone should get a chance at redemption while failing to realize that sometimes some actions are irredeemable. They think there is some perfect combination of words or punishment or a sound argument that can make a scumbag be not a scumbag.

For enlisted folk…Blue Falcons are always Blue Falcons, scumbags are always scumbags, and if left to their own devices they will always get you dusted off.

Obama learned a bit of this lesson in the Rose Garden. His father was scumbag by evidence of his previous tweets. Then he gives what Obama needed the least: an islamic prayer in his son’s captors’ language, Pashtu.

Mr. Obama, the lesson here is that Blue Falcons are always Blue Falcons. Aren’t you happy that you invited a Blue Falcon to the Rose Garden? And aren’t you happy that you have another Blue Falcon at Landstuhl just waiting for his media tour?

This is hard way to learn this lesson. Basic Training is only 9 weeks…perhaps you could cancel a golf vacation and learn a little down at Benning.

Amazing how on issue after issue (economy, national security, Obamacare) and scandal after scandal (Benghazi, IRS, VA), Obama polls in the mid 30s. Yet his overall approval remains in the low to mid 40s.

I will always believe it’s a version of the Bradley/Wilder effect. Voters show their displeasure by disagreeing with him on issues, but then approve of him so as not to appear racist.

Hey, take it easy on the National Guard (and other Reserve Components). Over 600,000 RC members have mobilized and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. They are all veterans. Over 700 have paid the ultimate price and over 9,000 were wounded.

In fact, if it wasn’t for the RC, we couldn’t have fought the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as nearly 30% of the boots on the ground were RC members. At one point, 40% of our forces in country were RC members.

I work closely with members of the RC on a daily basis and nearly 100% of them believe the trade was a bad deal.

crosshugger on June 10, 2014 at 10:03 AM

According to Ned Pepper: “More than 70% americans want stricter background checks for guns.”

What more than 70% of Americans want is a reduction in violence. Any sane person would want that, but any sane person would also know that they won’t get that with gun control measures that are falsely called “common sense.” Not one measure implemented by blue state control freaks would have prevented any of the violence that allegedly prompted the measures and the violence that has taken place since the implementation is proof that “gun control” is a failure everywhere it has been tried.
