Obama: Climate change is a national security issue

posted at 12:31 pm on June 9, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe this is just bad timing, because it’s not really a new argument. In the context of the recent activities of the Obama administration, though, claiming that we need to take action now on climate change because of national security just looks more ridiculous. After all, this comes at the same time that Barack Obama and John Kerry both argue that letting five Taliban commanders out of Guantanamo Bay’s detention facility won’t have any impact on American security — but the weather will?

Thomas Friedman gets the scoop:

But the area he’s just as worried about, said Obama, ”is how climate change could end up having profound national security implications in poorer countries. We’re obviously concerned about drought in California or hurricanes and floods along our coastlines and the possibility of more powerful storms or more severe droughts. All of those things are bread-and-butter issues that touch on American families. But when you start seeing how these shifts can displace people — entire countries can be finding themselves unable to feed themselves and the potential incidence of conflict that arises out of that — that gets your attention. There’s a reason why the quadrennial defense review — [which] the secretary of defense and the Joints Chiefs of Staff work on — identified climate change as one of our most significant national security problems. It’s not just the actual disasters that might arise, it is the accumulating stresses that are placed on a lot of different countries and the possibility of war, conflict, refugees, displacement that arise from a changing climate.”

You know what else has profound national security implications for poorer countries? Releasing commanders from a group that imposed a reign of terror until an American invasion booted them from power. Two of the men released from Gitmo were wanted for mass murder by the United Nations and at least one has pledged to return to the battlefield, but Obama and Kerry dismiss those concerns by insisting we can stop them if we really want to do so. Instead, we really need to hike taxes and ration American energy to improve our national security and those of places like Afghanistan.

Oh, and do you know what caused the civil war in Syria? Not decades of oppression and tyranny or the rise of virulent radical Islam, but a lack of rain:

Syria couldn’t manage a four-year drought when it had a government, and that drought helped fuel the uprising there, because the government did nothing for the people. Imagine what will happen if they have another prolonged drought and they’ve destroyed half their country?

”Which gives you a sense of what happens in a lot of these countries that are just barely hanging on,” said Obama. ”They don’t have a lot of margin for error, and that has national security implications. When people are hungry, when people are displaced, when there are a lot of young people, particularly young men, who are drifting without prospects for the future, the fertility of the soil for terrorism ends up being significant. And it can have an impact on us.”

Only in the alternate reality where Bashar al-Assad is a “reformer” (as Hillary Clinton insisted as Secretary of State) does it take a drought to demonstrate that the Assad regime wasn’t working on behalf of the people. This is sheer nonsense, a backwards rationalization that ignores a century of unrest after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Western attempts to impose a nation-state model in the region that didn’t fit, and the rise of militant Islam in response to both. All of that had been in motion long before any “global warming” took place, and continues even while the global climate hasn’t warmed at all over the last 17 years.

This argument attempts to hijack the legitimate concerns over terrorism and US policy in order to push an entirely unrelated domestic agenda. It’s not the first time this will happen, nor the last, but it’s one of the rare times when current events depict just how cynical and exploitative this argument is.

Obama is pure frickin’ genius!

All you racist haters just shut up!!

We all know that global warming is happening. After all, it’s settled science.

Not content to be the world’s leading scholar on the U.S. Constitution, he then went on to study climate science, and became the bestest scientifical authority on the subject.

His complex plan is to let Iran launch nuclear weapons throughout the Middle East, while North Korea launches them on South Korea and Japan.

His computer model tells him that the nuclear winter will just cancel the global warming, and we’ll all enjoy moderate 78 degree days forever.

Mmmmm, mmmmm, Barack Insane Obama!

We’re obviously concerned about drought in California

It’s not a drought. Since you’ve cut off the irrigation, the state is reverting to what it was before irrigation.

A desert.

Syria couldn’t manage a four-year drought when it had a government, and that drought helped fuel the uprising there, because the government did nothing for the people. Imagine what will happen if they have another prolonged drought and they’ve destroyed half their country?

Syria’s rate of annual rainfall hasn’t changed in over 2000 years. It’s exactly as dry there now as it was in the time of Christ, no more, no less.

The Romans had trouble with the locals there, too. So has everybody else who ever got handed that particular full diaper. It’s no coincidence that after the fall of France, Nazi Germany left the Vichy regime’ in charge of Syria. Even Il Duce’ balked at being told by Herr Schickelgruber to take it over after the German occupation of Vichy following Operation Torch.

Syria’s problem isn’t “climate”. It’s that it has spent the last few millennia occupied by people who hate each others’ chromosomes only slightly less than they hate everybody else on Earth.

But I wouldn’t expect The One to understand that. They’re “Eastern” and “mystical”, so of course whatever’s wrong with the place must be #All Our Fault.

His reflexive hatred of us, and Western civilization in general, is only marginally less troublesome than his boundless self-delusion and exuberant stupidity.

Yes – because the JCS is comprised of Generals who appointed directly by the President – and do whatever the President tells them to do. So the QDR very definitely reflects the President’s political whims if he orders those whims included.

dentarthurdent on June 9, 2014 at 12:44 PM

I agree. There are few, if any, Gen. Pattons or Admiral Halseys in our military today. Most officers that reach flag rank get their promotions for being a$$-kissing political correct idiots.

A while back I got a good image of all the ribbons that Gen. Patraeus wore. The majority were the equivalent of good attendance awards in elementary school, or best a$$-kisser to Congress bumper stickers.

Any badges like Master Parachutist is usually just from finishing the equivalent of a six week summer camp. He spent most of time in military schools, and then sitting safely behind the enemy line playing the equivalent of a PC military board game.

I’m really worried that this country doesn’t have too many (if any) potential great military leaders in the event the SH!T really hits the fan.

All very true. The military hands out medals/ribbons these days more or less as parting gifts from every assignment. He11, AF drone pilots, who sit in a remote control setup in Nevada, are getting bronze stars now – a medal that used to require some level of valor in actual combat.
However, I will say that unlike the medals/ribbons/awards, badges like Parachutist (basic, Senior, Master levels) do have very specific requirements – like a specific number of jumps. You don’t get the higher level badge unless you make the required number of jumps. So the badges of that sort say more to me about someone than the ribbons they have stacked up on their shirt/jacket.

But overall, far too many of the real warfighters tend to get weeded out in the various RIFs we have every few years, and in the promotion boards (we still have “up or out”). It’s most often the political weasels who get promoted – and I’ve seen that constantly since I was a Lt in the early 80s.
Especially true for the JCS – as those positions really are direct political appointees.

dentarthurdent on June 9, 2014 at 2:59 PM

But tens of thousands… Hundreds of thousands… No millions of unknown foreign citizens streaming over our borders presents no problems at all! However US citizens trying to move within their own country… That’s a security risk so we will spend billions of dollars harassing them at airports, bus and train stations and random road stops not to mention millions of cameras and monitoring all their calls emails and financial transactions….”to keep them safe”

Caseoftheblues on June 9, 2014 at 2:59 PM

California’s problem is simple: we mostly stopped building water infrastructure in the 1970s back during Jerry Brown’s first stint as Governor. Since then the state’s population…well, look it up.

Think we’ve built exactly one dam of any significant capacity since then. The intervening thirty-plus years have been mostly been the green loons flogging ‘conservation’ and attacking ag use of water.

So what would have been a moderately dry period fifty years ago with half the population suddenly becomes a crisis.

Remember 2005 the year of the hurricane? 28 storms that year. We were told this was the new normal. It was all because of global warming and such.

Then in 2006….10 storms.

They need to get their story straight.

Why do we act like the shorelines were always where they are now, anyway?

Why when I watch the local weather and they show the record high for the day, it is not always a date after 1988?

I will admit that weather has a tendency to “happen.”

You are correct. Patraeus did qualify for the Master Parachutist and did all the required jumps. However, the point I was making was he was already a fairly senior officer at the point of that training, and then never used it in combat. Thus my summer camp comment. If you’re a colonel, or brigadier general bumping some captain or major that may actually use that qualification in combat, I see as preening.

But, I think we’re pretty much on the same page. Most of the flag officers these days don’t really have the ‘real stuff’. They’re just men or women who have dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s, just to make the rank.

Oh ya – that’s the truth.
No way in he11 a Colonel or General is actually going to jump into a battlefield – so ya – total waste for someone like that to go get a few more jumps – just to get the badge – which is just to get the next promotion.

“dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s” and kissed the right @sses as well. When I was in the AF back in the 80s, we had a Captain who was getting out and going off to be a “congressional aide” – and he had quite the reputation – failed crew qualification and spent his whole assignment on day staff – as a favorite of our promotion minded (and total @sshole) Colonel. His going away present from the other junior officers was a pair of kneepads and a tube of chapstick.

Well, I’ve never served in the military, but thank you for your service.

I did want to get in the Navy and even got a 4-year scholarship in NROTC. I went through about four weeks of that and decided to decline the scholarship. Then I went on to a more affordable state university and got a degree in mechanical engineering.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have stuck it out with the Navy. But I’ve worked with so many former military officer (mostly non-combat and Colonel and above), that I think I made the right decision. Even then (1978), I could see the BS that the NROTC officers were trying to feed me and telling me it was ‘previously-used’ filet mignon.

I’m just not the politically correct type, by nature, so I could see I wouldn’t have a smooth career in the military.

The Huff and the Puff of the Fear Mongers
To understand the huff and puff of the fear mongering of the leftists activists and leftist activists “scientists” just take a look at some of the things they have said openly. Like this:
“We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.” -Stephen Schneider, lead ipcc author, 1989
And this: “Unless we announce disasters no one will listen.” -Sir John Houghton, first ipcc chair
And this: “The only way to get our society to truly change is to frighten people with the possibility of a catastrophe.” -Daniel Botkin, ex Chair of Envinronmental Studies, UCSB
So we got this: “Entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.” -Noel Brown, ex UNEP Director, 1989
And this: “[in twenty years (2008)] the West Side Highway [and thus much of Manhattan] will be under water.” -James Hansen, 1989, NASA
NONE of the countless “scary scenarios” that they have been making up for decades have come true. None. In fact none of them have even come remotely close to the truth. For example, as far as we can tell with our actual eyes, the sea level is just the same as it was in 1989. No change.
And the temperatures have been flatlining for close to 20 years. No global warming, despite the unimpeded rise of CO2, and this essentially falsifies their theory, as reflected in the abject failure of all their climate models: http://www.drroyspencer.com/2013/06/still-epic-fail-73-climate-models-vs-measurements-running-5-year-means/
Recently, and historically (based on ice core data), CO2 has not been shown to be a cause of global temperature change. All the warmists have is a theoretical model to back their claims, no evidence. But an alternative theoretical model posits that CO2 has close to zero effect beyond atmospheric concentrations above 200 parts per million (we now have 400ppm). This postulation seems more consistent with the evidence.

The very fact that he just released those terrorist and then claims the climate is our biggest threat to national security cuz it turns muzzies into terrorist is ludicrous at best and down right crazy at worst! This man has lost his mind and no one seems to notice!!!

texgal on June 9, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Now mind your language, ms. texgal!

This all part of his master plan. You see, those prisoners at Gitmo are exhaling the deadly CO2 gas every time they breathe. They also sweat a lot while playing soccer on the nice fields we’ve spent millions of dollars to build for them. While playing soccer, with their turbans on, they tend to sweat a lot, which leads to water vaporizing. Since water vapor leads to even more warming than CO2, Obama solved our climate change crisis in one fell swoop!

Therefore, by sending these terrorists back, we could curb global warming by about 0.0000001 degree Centigrade by 3045. It’s settled science. Plus, since the more people the terrorists kill, that’s one less CO2 spewing global warming being.

As to your last point (This man has lost his mind and no one seems to notice!!!). He never had a mind to lose. It was a very stupid American electorate that voted this idiot in the first time.

It was a majority of Americans who no longer believe in America that gave this loser a second chance.

We’ll never know why. Just like we’ll never know why all those hundreds of people in Guyana drank Jim Jones’ Kool Aid.
