Obama ad-libs umpteenth dramatic attack on Republicans

posted at 4:23 pm on June 9, 2014 by Noah Rothman

In a typically captivating post published in March, National Review’s Kevin Williamson observed that the hysterical headlines accompanying the ubiquitous and perfunctory write ups of Comedy Central host Jon Stewart’s latest rant are inversely proportional to the segment’s actual shock value.

Stewart is the “destroyer,” as Williamson dubbed him, because he is so often depicted by his fans as “destroying” this or the other conservative shibboleth. Even if Stewart doesn’t quite “destroy” but merely dings his target, he is credited with a great goring of someone’s ox. It feels mechanical and obligatory.

That same pressure to “destroy” and be credited with that destruction is falling on both President Obama and his admirers. On Monday, the president announced a proposal which would allow students to refinance their student loans in order to reduce the cost associated with attending college. Legislation proposed in the Senate to enact this student loan reform, which the CBO estimates would cost the government $51 billion through 2024, would be financed through yet another income tax hike on those making more than $1 million. It is unlikely to meet with approval from House Republicans.

For that reason alone, this is a political proposal likely aimed at energizing presently disengaged younger voters. If you were thinking of giving the president the benefit of the doubt and prefer to believe that Obama is not merely crafting a crass political cudgel for the 2014 election cycle with his latest proposal, you were let down when Obama confirmed the worst suspicions of his critics.

Announcing that he was departing from his prepared text, Obama chewed the scenery when he preemptively lashed out at conservatives for opposing his latest common sense proposal.

“I don’t know, by the way, why folks aren’t more outraged by this,” Obama wondered. “It would be scandalous if we allowed those kinds of tax loopholes for the very, very fortunate to survive while students are just getting started with their lives.”

“I want Americans to pay attention to see where their lawmakers’ priorities lie here,” the president lectured. “You’ve got a group of far-right Republicans in congress who push this trickle-down economic plan, telling hard working students and families you’re on your own.”

“If you’re a big oil company, they’ll go to bat for you,” the president asserted. “If you’re a student, good luck.”

“Some of these Republicans in Congress seem to believe that it’s just because — that just because some of the young people behind me need some help, that they’re not trying hard enough,” he concluded. “They don’t get it.”

To this tired retread, one expects the usual fawning reviews from Obama’s coterie of devotees; Obama “burns,” “schools,” “obliterates,” “annihilates,” “drops mic on,” or even the overused “destroys” his GOP opponents. But the predictable call-and-response has lost its sting, and you get the impression that both Obama and his Pavlovian supporters in the center-left political press are merely going through the motions.

One day in the near future, though probably not today, Obama will issue one of his exhausted broadsides against the Republican caricature he has so often lambasted, but the predictable response will not materialize. His supporters will no longer be satisfied with rhetorical victories alone. That day is not today, but it is coming.

And while we’re at it, can we stop using the words “blasts” and “hits” in political headlines?

Any time you see these written in a head line regarding a political figure, you can assume that the actual line is just another perfunctory criticism of one party vs. the other. Nothing exciting or pyrotechnic or unusual about it.

“(Democrat X) BLASTS (Republican Y) over (Issue Z)”

He doesn’t say that increased student loans and grants are the real cause of skyrocketing college costs. The federal govenment is at fault and this is even more galling because the federal government administers all financial aid. The reason people can’t pay back there loans is that they cannot find work. Funny he doesn’t mention this. What a tiresome little man he is. Please go away.

Factor in the unemployment rate and “live with mommy and daddy” rate – just another fine example of Liberal morons destroying wealth and opportunity.

Odie1941 on June 9, 2014 at 5:17 PM

Isn’t it amazing that the Republicans won’t work with President Obama, seeing how he is such a unifying force and ready to compromise with the opposition. This is yet another self-inflicted GOP wound. You could see this proposal coming from months ago, or even from the moment Democrats nationalized the student loan business (and made them undischargeable in bankruptcy).

Republicans could have and should have made some sort of lame, never-to-be-enacted proposal, so we could be equal to Obama’s lame, never-to-be-enacted proposal, and then complained about the Democrats unwillingness to help out indebted Americans.

Chronology of the Student Loan Program:

Obama/Democrats complain cost of private loans are too high/unaffordable.

By Democratic legislation all student loans are taken over by the Federal Government, guaranteeing payment to the universities.

Universities raise tuition prices (since they’re now under no threat of default).

Obama/Democrats now demanding taxpayers pick up more of the tab for these loans and the mean Republicans say this is nonsense.

Irresponsible students cheer Obama/Democrats for more free stuff.

Redistribution complete.

When I was in high school in the 1960s, my Dad & Mom told me that I needed to attain the grades that would grant me admission into a university via a scholarship, and failing that, I would need to go to a J.C. and then transfer to a 4 year school after two years. (If I had the grades). While not wealthy, my folks were in the upper middle class income wise. No where was it a given that I had some sort of ‘right’ to a college degree. I had the right to EARN one, however. Young people today lack the discipline necessary to achieve and they simply wait at the trough to be pampered and given whatever they feel entitled to.

By the way…my grades failed to get that scholorship and I ended up in junior college, ultimately dropping school in favor of a job, career and a wife and family. I returned to college at a later time, when I was a bit more mature and serious about such things as education.

Barack Obama is helping no one by forgiving obligations legally contracted to. But, then again, does he ever really help anyone?

.
Code words. I’ve heard them a lot from minority students. If these students were studying STEM fields or a business field like accounting and not African-American studies, Women’s Studies, or Ethnology of the Amazonian Victims of Spanish Colonialism, then I could see it if they were really studying for 16 hours a day and I would feel a lot more empathy. As far back as 1969, I knew of students who realized they messed up when they decided to study history rather than something marketable and usable in a technologically exploding world.
.
Bat schit crazy attack on a political party by a noted leftist partisan; maybe that is his one and only use to the Democrat Party ’cause he sure don’t know what ever else he is doin’.

ExpressoBold on June 9, 2014 at 5:52 PM

If college students want to know why student loans are so expensive, they should look squarely at Obama. The Obamacare bill had an amendment attached that made it illegal for private banks to make student loans or collect interest on them, so that all student loans became the government monopoly of Sallie Mae, which charges 8.5% interest.

If private banks were allowed to offer student loans, they could certainly offer interest rates lower than 8.5%, at a time when they can borrow from the Fed at a fraction of a percent interest.

But the Government wants to gouge the students without competition from those evil, greedy capitalist bankers, so it lies to them by blaming the bankers while forcing the students to pay higher than market interest rates.

Obama apparently does not understand the concept of a student loan being paid back by the student borrower, rather than faceless taxpayers who were nowhere near when the loan agreement was signed.

For those who know me, I got the results.

Autopsy from the VA…. Constipation. The VA treats constipation with Morphine. Didja know that?

My husband’s last words were, “I cannot believe this it it” He was 44.

That’s all I’m going to say on this. Constipation. That’s all it was.

For ant Veterans out there, please, seek private care. Demand it. March on Washington. Whatever it takes.

Love to all.

I have no words that can comfort you. Just know my heart is breaking along with yours. Prayers headed your way.

In spite of idiot stuff like this, the Left still wants to pretend we oppose Obama just because he’s black. That is so far from being a valid excuse it is ridiculous.

katiejane on June 9, 2014 at 6:09 PM

When you think about it, since O’bama’s (black) father was pretty much a no-show thru much of Barry’s young life, it’s only logical to assume that most of his Leftist Radicalism was implanted in him by his (white) mother and her (equally white) mother, both of whom, especially his mother, had some very radical ideas.

So, I oppose his white half. Does that make me a racist too? I’m sure the Left would call me a white supremacist!

Hard pressed to find a worse one before WWII…

James Buchanan, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Pierce come to mind…

What a do@chebag is this little cardboard cutout of a man.

Barry is the first of a generation of red-diaper babies now old enough to be president. There are many more where he came from, black or white.

slickwillie2001 on June 9, 2014 at 9:35 PM

This guy is truly a douchebag to epic proportions. Whomever thinks this guy is “brilliant” is just as dumb as this pathetic excuse for a president is.

tyketto on June 9, 2014 at 4:42 PM

I used to think he was smart. Now I see that he is a mediocre manipulator “community organizer” who gets a big boost from the race card. For those who are concerned with race, and firsts, they should have done a better job of anointing the chosen one. Maybe that is where Obama’s biggest success was. Convincing the DNC that an upstart state senator from Illinois was something special.

tdarrington on June 9, 2014 at 4:46 PM

When Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, nobody believed he was only playing because he was black. He broke the color barrier and earned respect because he could play baseball.

The Buffalo Soldiers proved that black people could be good soldiers, and proved the skeptics wrong, because no one could doubt their competence as soldiers.

The Red Tails proved their competence as airmen and pilots, regardless of their color.

George Washington Carver revolutionized the use of peanuts in agriculture, and invented all kinds of products based on peanuts. His reputation as a scientist was earned, not awarded because he was black.

Contrast with Barack Obama. The media is quick to try to give him all kinds of unearned credit because of his race, which is the exact opposite of the real trailblazers I mentioned. The epitome of this urge to pretend he was special was the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him before he had done anything as president.

He has some smart people working for him, but I don’t think he’s particularly smart. But then, he’s been told how special he was all his life, so why did he have to do anything smart?

It’s so inadequate to say, but I’m very sorry for your loss. May the God of all comfort be with you, and comfort your heart.

Noah – you are having a great first day!

gophergirl on June 9, 2014 at 4:37 PM

Agreed. Granted, the very first post was Hillary telling another Hilary-ous* whopper, which is about as red meat as you can get. But you’re going strong throughout the day, too.

* Maybe it’s not a word, but it should be!
