Hillary: ‘We struggled’ to make ends meet after leaving the White House

posted at 9:01 am on June 9, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Hillary Clinton isn’t rich. She’s you.

The Clintons, who are so fond of reminding voters that former President Bill Clinton left behind a budget surplus, were not so particular about their personal finances in the late 1990s. If you forgot that little historical detail, Hillary Clinton is happy to remind you that she, too, has “struggled” and knows what “dead broke” feels like.

“If you — you have no reason to remember, but we came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt,” Clinton told ABC’s Diane Sawyer after being confronted with the fact that she makes a ridiculous amount of money on the speaking circuit.

“We had no money when we got there and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education, you know, it was not easy,” she added.

“First of all, we had to pay off all our debts,” Clinton continued, “which was, you know, he had to make double the money because of obviously taxes and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members.”

That’s an interesting answer. Sawyer’s question was not, “You’re making an absurd amount of money, why don’t you apologize?” It was, “You’re making an absurd amount of money, why would you ever want to stop just to run for president?”

But Clinton’s defensive response made more sense when Sawyer asked a follow-up question. “Do you think Americans will understand five times the median income in this country for one speech?” Sawyer asked.

“Let me put it this way,” Clinton answered. “I thought making speeches for money was a much better thing than getting connected with any one group or company, as so many people who leave public life do.”

Take that, Elizabeth Warren!

This answer reflects a world of insecurities plaguing the nascent Clinton campaign, which has made some rather transparent overtures to progressive voters who are concerned about American income inequality.

Clinton was clearly prepared to play defense on questions relating to her personal finances. It is interesting that her first defense centers on the family’s 15-year-old legal fees. It is true that the Clintons’ copious debts forced the former first family to make some humiliating compromises after leaving office, including but not limited to borrowing money from fundraiser-turned-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe in order to purchase a New York home ahead of Clinton’s 2000 U.S. Senate bid.

But the Clinton’s long ago overcame this adversity. While many of her speeches are unpaid, those who do pay for the privilege of learning from Hillary’s wisdom are not stingy about it. As of March, since leaving her post at the State Department, Clinton made close to $5 million in speaking fees. She also secured an $8 million advance for her book. Together with her husband, the Clintons made $109 million in the past 7 years.

All that income isn’t sitting well with some. “Clinton’s decision to pocket six-figure sums from Big Finance heavyweights and other corporate players might tarnish her public image, says Russ Baker, a Rutgers University political scientist,” wrote Mother Jones reporter Andy Kroll. “Baker notes that Clinton’s coziness with Wall Street could come back to bite her in a Democratic primary, especially at a time when populist figures such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio are ascendant within her Democratic Party.”

It remains to be seen if doubts about Clinton’s commitment to the progressive cause can be quashed by reminding voters that she once had to accept a $1.35 million loan from McAuliffe.

Hillary: ‘We struggled’ to make ends meet after leaving the White House

Uh-huh. You and Mitt Romney both.

Stoic Patriot on June 9, 2014 at 9:03 AM

BS. The Clintons were getting 6 figures for speeches. And they, like Obama, have ghostwritten “autobiographies” out as well they made money on.

Well, gee, maybe they shouldn’t have bought that big old house in a hotsie totsie neighborhood in New York Oh wait, wasn’t that bought for them? Couldn’t she just dabble in some futures again? Or maybe be a lawyer, I hear there is money in that. Not that I have a problem with her getting paid large fees for flapping her jaws. Was it P.T. Barnum who said there a sucker born every minute?

Laughable.

Coming from the woman who invested $1000 in the commodities market and six months later walked away with $100,000.

Such a struggle. She must have been eating beans out of a can after leaving the White House.

What a obvious pandering answer…struggle to make ends meet…while pulling in multi-million dollar speaking engagements.

What taxes? Does this mean they had back-taxes?

Houses? Like, more than one? Do I hear a little Mrs. Kenneth Lay coming out here? “We only have 3 homes left…boohoo!”

A family of 3 couldn’t survive on the former Presidents’ pension?

Oh my.

BobMbx on June 9, 2014 at 9:09 AM

Taxes which Bill raised, by the way.

Steve Eggleston on June 9, 2014 at 9:09 AM

OMG. Is she for real? Bill Clinton received something like $10 million for his presidential memoirs, and Hillary got $8 million for her “First Lady” memoirs.

They weren’t even out the door of the White House before they signed the book contracts.

Cry me a river, you awful woman. You and your husband (and your daughter) have all profited enormously from your so-called “public service.” The public . . . not so much.

AZCoyote on June 9, 2014 at 9:09 AM

Give me a break. Bubba was getting paid a fortune for speeches the moment he left the White House and Hillary had just entered the Senate. Even if they were technically in debt when he departed in January 2001(and I think that’s a dubious claim, BTW), the Clintons never had to worry about making ends meet the way so many of us peon masses do in the Obama economy.

How is it that they were broke and in debt leaving the WH when they lived on the public’s dime for 8 years? If so that wouldn’t make them the best of money managers. No wonder Haiti got the short shrift from BJ’s fund gathering. If they got a loan from Terry Mac it was probably some dough they bundled and sent to him in the first place.

Kissmygrits on June 9, 2014 at 9:14 AM

Do you think Americans will understand five types the median income

While each speech may 5 times the median income, its cumulative. After 2 speeches, its not “5 times”, its “10 times” the median income.

After 10 speeches, its “50 times” the median income.

While Dianne asked a good question, she didn’t set it up so that the scale was indicated.

BobMbx on June 9, 2014 at 9:15 AM

They were “so broke” when they left Washington yet they had their sites on “houses”? Note the plural.
and at least one of those houses in Westchester county, NY. They obviously knew, and were not worried, that big bucks were in their future.

http://dailycaller.com/2014/01/22/how-much-will-obama-make-for-his-post-presidency-memoir/

(You’ll also no doubt be relieved to know that Obama will likely make even more, and that Michelle Obama, who is reportedly already writing her book about all her “accomplishments” as FL, is expected to get as much as $12 million for hers.)

Poor sad politicians, struggling to get by on their six-figure, taxpayer-funded pensions, their taxpayer-funded 24/7 security, their taxpayer-funded offices, and their multi-million dollar books deals. It’s a miracle they can survive such deprivation!

“Diane, it was horrible. I needed almost three months of constant study before I learned the hobo chalk code. And trying to run for Senate while dodging the railroad bulls in the freight yards was tough, let me tell you. We camped in a city park in Mt. Kisco for most of the summer before our Chappaqua home was ready. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to keep your pantsuit pressed when it’s rolled up and tied to your bindlestick?”

DarthBrooks on June 9, 2014 at 9:22 AM

The democrats hounded Gov. McDonnell over some legal in VA gifts and whatever, but the new Gov. of Virginia, Terry McCaulliffe, handed the Clintons the money to buy a Chappaqua address for Mrs. Clinton to be able to run as a New Yorker for the Senate.

Which graft had more impact on politics? Buying your way into a wealthy community for a candidate or Dinesh D’souza “were going to get the guy who made that video” campaign donations to Wendy Long? Which harmed a state more? Bob McDonell’s friendship with a nutritional/vitamin company or Terry McCaulliffe meddling in NYS politics?

How is it OK for McCaulliffe to loan the Clinton’s a special rate for a $million plus home, when you can’t get that? And the real payment comes because then they have to campaign for you to get the office of your choice.

I am sick of Hillary, and Bill too, didn’t we have enough of them and their ilk (McCaulliffe) already? “They are so 90′s.”

She’s hedging her link to Obama as yet. She could have easily roped in some of those on the far left by pointing out how much easier it is under Obamanomics for the rich to maintain and expand their wealth than it is to ascend from the bottom.

But that would be a shot at O and she may still need him.

Then again, Obamanomics is the beginning stage of progressive economic policy, so trashing it would be going against her ideology.

BKeyser on June 9, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Former Presidents receive $199,500 per year for life in addition to around $90,000 per year for their “office” and staff. Clinton is the last President who will also get Secret Service protection for life. Starting with Bush, they now get protection for 10 years.

With Billy Bob’s $199,000 pension and Hill’s $175,000 Senate salary alone, they were bringing in close to $400k per year. Not a bad life in most people’s estimation.

Together with her husband, the Clintons made $109 million in the past 7 years.

That is how much money they amassed. They earned even more. When she ran for POTUS in 2007-08 she used OPM.

By the time Bill left office Hillary was already a Senator. I still recall the outrage in some quarters (left and right) over Bill hitting the speaking circuit with a vengeance, pocketing 6 and 7 figures per speech. Bill gave A LOT of speeches that first year.

Clinton is the last President who will also get Secret Service protection for life. Starting with Bush, they now get protection for 10 years.

That was the law for a couple of years, then congress changed it back (and Barry signed that law, of course). Clinton, Bush, and Obama will all now get lifetime SS protection, at taxpayer expense, of course.

Here’s a chart of the median housing prices in Chappaqua since 2000. They were already in the $600,000 range when the Clintons set up shop with McAuliffe’s money. You don’t do that if you’re “worried about making ends meet” — you do that if you know there’s a big post-presidency payoff coming as of 1/20/01, when Bill leaves office.

That’s not entirely true. After law school, Hillary Rodham worked on Capitol Hill (the Nixon impeachment matter) for a while, but she was fired for being dishonest and unethical. She also flunked the D.C. bar exam. Not exactly resume’ enhancers for a Yale Law grad looking to find another job. So she went to Arkansas and attached herself to Clinton, who had a job and political ambitions, but wasn’t making much money at the time. They didn’t have much money for a few years, but then Clinton won an election and the opportunities to trade on his influence started rolling in (for both of them) . . . .
