Harry Reid on when he got a heads up on the Bergdahl: “What difference does it make?”

posted at 2:01 pm on June 5, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via Greg Hengler, I realize that modern politics is all about brand-building but “whatevs” is a weird brand to choose. Hillary uttered these same words during her Benghazi testimony, now here’s Dingy recycling the sentiment for the Bergdahl swap. We’re one apathetic Obama soundbite away from a campaign commercial. Given his waning interest in his job these days, I’m thinking we’ll eventually get it.

Reid’s being asked here if it’s true that the White House notified him on Friday that the Bergdahl swap was impending, which would be curious since apparently no one else — no one — in Congress received that courtesy. Boehner wasn’t told, in case you’re wondering whether Reid’s tip-off was something they did as a matter of course for the majority leader in each chamber. Could be there’s a simple explanation, though: Maybe Reid was told on Saturday, after the deal had gone down, like everyone else and was simply mistaken about when he was notified. Right? Wrong, via John Ekdahl:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday that the White House told him about the Bergdahl deal on Friday — before it actually happened. That would be notable because it appears nobody else in Congress was told about the deal until after the fact on Saturday, ABC’s JONATHAN KARL notes. That prompted a senior administration official to urgently tell reporters traveling with the President that Senator Reid was mistaken and that he had been told on Saturday just like everybody else. So, Senator Reid simply got his days mixed up, right? Maybe not. Shortly after the senior administration official sought to correct Senator Reid, Senator Reid’s spokesman sought to correct the senior adminstration official. “This is mildly awkward,” tweeted Reid spokesman Adam Jentelson, “but someone at the WH must be confused…” In a second tweet, Jentelson added: “We were alerted earlier in the week that a significant notification was imminent & learned on Fri that Bergdahl op was going fwd.” Asked about that, the senior administration official had a new response: “No comment.”

Reid says Friday, the White House says Saturday, Reid says no, really, it was Friday, the White House clams up. My theory on this yesterday was that Reid is lying through his teeth, trying to give Obama a tiny bit of political cover in claiming that he did notify at least one member of Congress before the swap happened — not 30 days earlier, as required by law, but a little bit earlier just to prove his good faith. That doesn’t add up, though. If Reid was going to lie to protect O, he should have said, “Yeah, he told me about this 31 days ago. He complied with the statute.” That wouldn’t have explained why Reid was the only member of Congress he told but it would have been something. Also, if Reid was intent on lying, he shouldn’t have taken the “whatevs” approach here. He should have been firm on Friday, i.e. “you’re damned right I received advance notice, just as Congress requires the president to provide.”

Sounds like what happened is that Reid did get a heads up from someone on Friday and either assumed that all the other key players in Congress had received one too or couldn’t keep his big mouth shut when someone asked him about his unique privilege. Being a sleazebag hatchet man for the White House’s enemy du jour has earned him some special treatment, no? Exit question: If it’s true that the Taliban threatened to kill Bergdahl if the prisoner swap leaked before it happened, why on earth would anyone have risked telling Reid or anyone else beforehand?

Rs, you weasels of the land, grow a pair.

Reid is a fine example how thugs are to be squished, Mafia-style. It’s all you have left.

Otherwise you are more culpable than the D-rats.

Wait, you already are that.

Exit question: If it’s true that the Taliban threatened to kill Bergdahl if the prisoner swap leaked before it happened, why on earth would anyone have risked telling Reid or anyone else beforehand?

The Taliban wasn’t holding Bergdahl. The Haqqani Network was and the Obama administration designated it a terrorist organisation in 2012.

Reid is also out there condemning those that are criticising Bergdahl and is calling him a POW.

Let me get this straight, we aren’t supposed to rush to judgment and call Bergdahl a deserter when a 2010 Pentagon report concluded that it was ‘incontrovertible’ that he ‘walked away’ from his post of his own volition because a final determination hasn’t been made, but we are supposed call him a POW even though the Pentagon had refused to label him that at any point during his captivity?

Bergdahl was not ‘captured on the battlefield.’ He was not abducted from his base. He did not ‘lag behind on a patrol that night,’ as he claimed, since there was NO patrol that night.

He abandoned his comrades-in-arms during a time of war knowing that they would incur great risks when they were sent out to search for him.

He was NOT a ‘POW’, but he IS a ‘POS’.

Fundamentally, there is very little difference between the President offering a convicted criminal a pardon or commutation of their sentence and the decision to exchange Mullah Omar’s board of directors for one (at best deserter, at worst collaborator) US captive.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is that the decision to do so is dangerous, naive, and irresponsible towards not only our national security, but that of other nations which could / would be targets of the jihadi Taliban. Then there is the arrogant, contemptuous, illegal, and petulant manner in which it was done – and how this feckless Administration is attempting to spin their naive and irresponsible decision.

I agree, this decision could be entirely harmful in the long run. Might be a complete mistake. But I am not sure political hay is to be made of this. Everything just comes across as: “Be mad and emotional. Because ______ !”

However, if 5 guys can take down the most expensive and advanced military in the world, then perhaps that is merely survival of the fittest. If Obama can somehow “resurrect” the taliban after 8 years of said patriotic military, it means we weren’t strong enough to route them in the first place. With God on our side no less!

If it were me, I’d do the deal, but deliver the Taliban guys in bits and pieces. Then prosecute the soldier and if he is guilty, then follow the military justice code. Since he was the list soldier, there is no potential harm to other POWs.

How are you “pretty sure?”

Walter L. Newton on June 5, 2014 at 2:37 PM

Because it was written by lawyers. We live in a country that argues about what the meaning of “is” is.

Patty Murray stuck her mug up by the mic: “And you know the Taliban builds bridges and schools and hospitals and stuff!”

Reid says through clenched teeth: “Shut up, you’re not helping!”

Pretty sure there were loopholes in the law allowing for such things. Also, according to the Velvet Hammer, Charles Krauthammer, Obama has more freedom doing this since he is CiC.

The first problem is that the law in question he signed. The second problem is that this administration promised in the past to follow the this law. The third problem is that this “deal” has been worked on for years. But all of that pales in comparison to how this narcissistic tool attempted to politicize this entire thing to his own advantage. That Rose Garden happy dance is the biggest insult to those who serve by a sitting president in my lifetime. And if Bergdahl never faces justice we may as well rip up the USMCJ and use it as toilet paper.

Fundamentally, there is very little difference between the President offering a convicted criminal a pardon or commutation of their sentence and the decision to exchange Mullah Omar’s board of directors for one (at best deserter, at worst collaborator) US captive.

That’s not the problem.

Well, I can see all the “legal scholars” are posting today…

You think that there is “little difference”?

Really? Based on what?

Do you think that domestic “law” is that same as “foreign policy” law?

You think congress does not have to or should be notified?

Pal, best you don’t post about something you know nothing about…

One of the problems is exactly that, acting as a dictator, a king…we have a balance of power and our leaders are always, always, available for decisions that are even extreme emergencies…

That’s all you got? Weak sauce. You’re shilling for the administration, and you have less info than Congress was given.
