Team Hillary distancing themselves from Bergdahl swap?

posted at 9:21 am on June 4, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

The first hint that Hillary Clinton didn’t want to tie herself to the spike-the-football strategy from the White House strategy for the Bowe Bergdahl swap could be described as a dog that didn’t bark. The former Secretary of State held her tongue for two days, and then only tepidly defended the deal in which Barack Obama traded five of the most dangerous men in Gitmo for the captive US soldier:

“This young man, whatever the circumstances, was an American citizen — is an American citizen — was serving in our military,” Clinton said. “The idea that you really care for your own citizens and particularly those in uniform, I think is a very noble one.” …

“You don’t want to see these five prisoners go back to combat. There’s a lot that you don’t want to have happen. On the other hand you also don’t want an American citizen, if you can avoid it, especially a solider, to die in captivity,” Clinton said. “I think we have a long way to go before we really know how this is going to play out.”

Translation: As choices go, this was certainly … one of them. Clinton was smart enough not to climb onto Obama’s bandwagon from the beginning, although one has to wonder whether that unannounced “private lunch” on the previous Thursday was an attempt to get her on board. (If so, it raises more questions about Obama’s failure to notify Congress about the release of the five Talibani.)

Forget the bandwagon analogy, and think of sinking ships instead. Within less than a day after that statement, “former officials” in the State Department were busy talking with The Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin to explain that Hillary Clinton would have driven a much harder bargain than Obama, and even then may not have done the swap anyway:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was personally and intensely involved in the debate over swapping five Taliban commanders for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in 2011 and 2012. But she had severe reservations about the potential deal, and demanded stricter conditions for the release of the prisoners than what President Obama settled for last week.

Despite that the White House’s claim this week that the United States did not negotiate “directly” with the Taliban to secure the Bergdahl swap, the State Department, Defense Department, and White House officials did meet several times with Taliban leaders in 2011 and 2012 to discuss the deal. The negotiations, held in in Munich and Doha, fell apart in early 2012. But before they did, Clinton had a framework deal drawn up that was much tougher on the Taliban than what ultimately got done two years later.

Three former administration officials who were involved in the process told The Daily Beast that Clinton was worried about the ability to enforce the deal and disinclined to trust the Taliban or the Haqqani network in Pakistan, which held Bergdahl until this weekend. Clinton was so concerned, the former officials added, that she may not have even signed off if the negotiations had succeeded.

Hillary didn’t want to work with the Haqqani network at all, Rogin’s sources tell him, and didn’t like the idea of a swap for just Bergdahl. She wanted an end to all hostilities as a price for the release of the five Taliban leaders in Gitmo. In fact, that much is on the record from 2012:

In late 2012, Clinton spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the Bergdahl case was only one part of the overall effort to convince the Taliban to make peace. “We said within the reconciliation track… that his case was something that, in that track, could potentially be raised.”

In other words, this looks like a legitimate defense in regard to a serious split between Obama and Hillary during her tenure at State. It also appears as though the Clinton team is worried that this will stick to Hillary and that any future fallout from the release will do damage to her prospects, especially since her claim to executive expertise is necessarily tied to Obama’s foreign-policy outcomes. The fact that Team Hillary is aggressively staking out her position with this much distance on a key decision from Obama leaves the White House more isolated than ever.

The Hill reports that the Obama administration has belatedly begun to retract its arrogance:

The Obama administration has apologized for bypassing Congress before it released senior Taliban commanders from Guantanamo Bay as part of a controversial prisoner exchange.

The expression of regret was a major shift for the White House, which had previously offered a defiant defense on why it could not adhere to the notification provisions of a 2013 law. …

White House officials have changed their tone markedly over the past 48 hours after insisting they had nothing to apologize for.

This is an utter political disaster, and with the five Taliban leaders on the loose in Qatar, the political disaster is almost certain to be the least of American concerns over the long haul.

Shrillary’s answer that she would have driven a much harder bargain reminds me of obozo’s BS answer during a debate with McCain in ’08. Obozo was going to deal with Iran with “aggressive negotiations”. No one knew what it meant, but it sounded good. Then reality came and we saw that “aggressive negotiations” simply meant “do nothing.”

But at least we got back an American soldier who served honorably and with distinction up until the day he was captured in the fog of battle. Right? Tell me at least that much is true! /

This was supposed to be a story with a victory lap for getting Bowe back. It blew up in the administration’s face like a defective suicide vest. And not because of a traitor held by the enemy but because of what was illegally handed over to get that traitor back.

Where this gets fun is Onama’s NPD and notoriously thin skin won’t allow him to sit silent while Hildabeast starts dissing him.

While it can be said nearly every week, this really HAS been Obama’s worst week… He gets a poll showing 79% blame him for the VA, his quick overreaction in trading 5 mass murderers for what turns out to be a traitor not a POW blows up in his face, and now Hildabeast is turning on him in public. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll wander out into the Beltway and play in traffic…

The lack of unit members rushing to defend their pal “Bowe” is probably the most damning of indictments. These are the people that worked with him at an observation post in a combat zone. Yet…. not one individual has come forward and painted Bergdahl in a particularly favorable light.

IMO, there is going to be some real questions about screening soldiers for mental suitability for deployment after Manning, Bergdahl, and Robert Bales (the soldier who killed 16 Afghan citizens).

If you mean, did they spike a football, the answer is no.\

If you mean, did the rat-eared wonder and Bergdahls mom and Tali-dad have a celebratory and rare Saturday statement from the Rose Garden, the answer is yes. Obama and the Tali-parents were hugging each other the whole time and the statement was essentially about the returning war hero bit with no real mention of the very bad deal that was made to get Bergdahl back. And of course no mention of the fact he was a deserter.

But the real turning point was when Tali-dad praised Allah for his son and the people of Afghanistan. It really really worked against the idea that Bergdahl is the 21st century Audie Murphy.

Because even she realizes how bad this is.

cozmo on June 4, 2014 at 9:43 AM

you dont see me defending it either do you?

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on June 4, 2014 at 9:51 AM

You defended it in the very second comment on the very first Bergdahl thread Saturday. And you wonder why we laugh at you?

To refresh your 2 remaining brain cells:

im sure the commentors on this site will find at least a dozen differant ways to deny obama any credit for this or spin it as a bad thing.

Joke or serious issues?

Aren’t you the banned commenter who had the screen name “donabernathy”?

rmer officials” in the State Department were busy talking with The Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin to explain that Hillary Clinton would have driven a much harder bargain than Obama, and even then may not have done the swap anyway:

Yeah, right. If she answered that 3AM phone call, there would be SEAL teams if not tactical nukes deployed. She can claim anything she wants. She could even claim to summon the powers of Hell from her Father to release the deserting weasel.

But that also misses the point. Her spokes-perps agree that 1) the US should negotiate with terrorists, and 2) trading something of value for a deserting weasel is good US foreign policy.

The only difference is that she would have traded four terrorist kingpins rather than five for one deserting weasel.

Are you sure Hillary! held her tongue?

Or was it Huma?

You need not concern yourself with any aspect of my nom. I take it then, since the comment I linked of yours was addressed to no one. It is a lie.

and as i learned more i stopped defending and started saying the president has alot of questions to answer and needs to provide a better explanation and that the whole thing doesnt look to good for him.

more like a joke mocking some of the paranoid whackjobs on this site that think any commentor they dont agree with has to be the same person as every other commentor they dont agree with.

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on June 4, 2014 at 10:23 AM

At least you admit that your knee jerk reaction is to defend Obama no matter what, others wont say that on here. You did look around after your first bout of Liberal talking point trolling, so there may be some hope.

Johnnyreb on June 4, 2014 at 10:27 AM

This is an utter political disaster, and with the five Taliban leaders on the loose in Qatar, the political disaster is almost certain to be the least of American concerns over the long haul.

Incompetence.

Yes, we always want to assume that the Obama administration has some master plan. Certainly, they’re not all a bunch of idiots, and it appears plenty of people advised against doing this. But they’ve been pushing for this for a long time, and I think the central problem is that they don’t listen to good advice when it’s against something they really want.

This happened because the White House REALLY wanted it to happen, and ignored all advice to the contrary.

There Goes the Neighborhood on June 4, 2014 at 10:28 AM

Hillary should add this affair to her list of accomplishments. She will make an excellent Dim nom.

Bmore on June 4, 2014 at 10:28 AM

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on June 4, 2014 at 10:26 AM

So an unsolicited stand alone joke. Yes I think that may me the case. To your first question. You offered advice,

are in great need of recalibration.

I am in no need of your advice.

Bmore on June 4, 2014 at 10:31 AM

True to form, Hillary! has perfect 20-20 HINDSIGHT.

GarandFan on June 4, 2014 at 10:33 AM

“Everything affects the calculus,” said Carl Levin of Michigan. “It’s an excruciating decision the president has to make, that decision as to whether he would do it. Would you use a nuclear weapon to get back a soldier? I mean, no.”

Hmmmmm…. This is quite telling.

Amazed the WH can’t find a single member of Bergdahl’s unit willing to defend him

Really?

Bmore on June 4, 2014 at 9:43 AM

In the Soviet Army, they had political officers attached to each unit. How long will it be before Dempsey and Obama get together and implement a similar policy, which will guarantee at least one voice of support no matter what.

BobMbx on June 4, 2014 at 10:33 AM

Good to know that I can just apologize if I decide to break a Federal Law and I wont get in trouble.

Johnnyreb on June 4, 2014 at 10:11 AM

That clause only applies to half-breeds and their senior staff.

BobMbx on June 4, 2014 at 10:35 AM

BobMbx on June 4, 2014 at 10:33 AM

Good point. Do we know this hasn’t already been done to some extent?

Bmore on June 4, 2014 at 10:38 AM

Vote Hillary 2016
Because, what difference does it make anyway?

ConstantineXI on June 4, 2014 at 10:40 AM

As for Jane Fonda, she has apologized.

SC.Charlie on June 4, 2014 at 10:04 AM

Now, four decades removed, sitting in the lap of luxury, Fonda has decided that the pictures on the anti-aircraft gun were a mistake. Not the actual visit – she stands by that. “I did not, have not, and will not say that going to North Vietnam was a mistake,” she said. “I have apologized only for some of the things that I did there, but I am proud that I went.”

Sorry pal, she only apologized for being caught with photos that show here contempt for the U.S. She was and is a communist/marxist supporter.

BTW, this is a woman who stated:

‘My biggest regret is I never got to f*** Che Guevara.”

right2bright on June 4, 2014 at 10:40 AM

So an unsolicited stand alone joke. Yes I think that may me the case.

it had been asserted in the same thread as fact. i was just making a little jab at these people who know so much that isnt so.
