It’s come to this: White House aides now accusing Bergdahl’s squad of “swift-boating” him

posted at 11:21 am on June 4, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via the Weekly Standard. “Swift-boating,” as you may recall, is when critics tell the truth about someone’s military service when the truth is unhelpful to Democrats. Consider this the beginning of phase three of the Bergdahl fallout. Phase one was when soldiers from Bergdahl’s unit caught the White House off-guard by publicly accusing him of desertion. Team O probably thought the combination of nondisclosure agreements that they were forced to sign and the prospect of retaliation if they made life hard for the Pentagon would keep them quiet. That was the key misjudgment from which everything else over the past three days has flowed.

Phase two was the White House desperately searching for someone, anyone, from Bergdahl’s unit who’d stand up in front of the media and vouch for his character. That’s happening entirely out of public view, but rest assured, it’s happening. The fact that they’ve come up with nothing so far speaks volumes about how uniform opinion is within Bergdahl’s old squad about him and his motives. If Team O could produce just one witness willing to face the cameras and argue that Bergdahl was a good soldier who was probably taken against his will, it’d plant enough doubt in casual observers’ minds that this whole thing might be reduced to a he said/she said matter for many — even though there are at least six veterans already who’ve come forward to support the desertion theory. But they can’t find anyone to do it. It’s been a complete barrage of anti-Bergdahl witnesses on cable news since Monday morning. The State Department is so bereft of third-party support that they were forced last night to tell reporters to trust Bergdahl himself over his squad mates, as if a repatriated deserter wouldn’t have an incentive to lie about why he went missing upon his return.

So now, phase three: Start discrediting the soldiers who’ve accused him. It’ll have to be done subtly and tactfully. If they go dumpster-diving on these guys for things like substance-abuse problems or financial trouble, the nastiness of it might backfire on the White House and make their Bergdahl problem even worse. Babbling about “swift-boating” is a good way to get the ball rolling, at least among liberals who are grasping for ways to defend Obama and have come up empty thus far. “Swift-boating” implies that the vets who’ve accused Bergdahl have some political motivation in doing so; it’s of a piece with that BuzzFeed story yesterday hyperventilating about Republican Ric Grenell helping Bergdahl’s comrades get in touch with media outlets. The point is to suggest that this is some sort of dirty trick, maybe even invented whole cloth by nefarious conservatives to wound the president, rather than a bunch of guys who’ve spent five years boiling inside because their friends got killed on patrol searching for Bergdahl finally choosing to come clean. To protect a guy who allegedly served dishonorably, the White House and the left now have no choice but to go after the honorable ones.

Any predictions on what the next bit of oppo is, or who the target will be? I think Evan Buetow’s interview with Tapper yesterday was the most damaging to the White House so far. Hope you don’t have any unpaid parking tickets, buddy.

dogsoldier on June 4, 2014 at 1:35 PM

As I understand it, there are varying penalties for varying definitions of desertion (and AWOL).

So that would indicate it is indeed viewed by military code/law as a matter of degrees offense.

So it’s not all that clear cut…sir.

His opinion is uninformed. Bergdahl planned to desert and then he carried out his crime, causing the deaths of those who went out looking for him.

Nothing about this is unclear, except to those who really do not want to face facts.

And Del is correct as is Ed. The Swiftboat veterans told the truth and provided facts.

dogsoldier on June 4, 2014 at 1:41 PM

According to Verbulace, the one anonymous soldier is more credible than the number of identified soldiers who came forward.

but that isn’t because the anonymous soldier very slightly supports Verbulace’s argument. Oh no, it’s because verby is so smart and can deduce and infer and figure out who is telling the truth.

the one person hiding his identity is much more likely to be telling the truth than the several soldiers who have come forward publicly. It just makes sense.

And, because republicans support the soldiers in Bergdahl’s unit that are coming forward, republicans hate soldiers. You see, Bergdahl is a soldier, and the other people in his unit were merely donuts.

Why do you hate soldiers but love donuts? Why?

Ahhh – the old “don’t form an opinion based on the evidence you have, wait until I tell you it’s ok to form an opinion.”

As I have stated many, many times to you and others – the military follows Obama’s orders. Obama is the commander in chief. If Obama wants a whitewash investigation, that is what will happen. So, I don’t anticipate the military investigating Bergdahl, but if they do, I anticipate a whitewash.

We have sufficient evidence based on witness testimony to form an opinion right now. Perhaps other, more convincing evidence will come out at a later date. If that happens, we can adjust our opinions based on that evidence.

the evidence we have seen to date though appears fairly conclusive and pretty damning.

Ask yourself – why did Obama not follow regular procedures in doing this deal? Why did he break the law and not report to the Senate 30 days in advance of the deal? Because, he knew this was a stupid deal and that it would not have been allowed to go forward had he followed regular channels or gone to congress.

This is not rocket science. You keep throwing tons of nonsense at the wall hoping it will stick. I suppose when you worship a politician rather than caring about what is good for the country or caring about the truth, that is what you do.

Even soldiers critical of Bergdahl are saying that’s not true.

verbaluce on June 4, 2014 at 12:08 PM

“Soldiers” plural? I see later in the thread you manage to point to one anonymous soldier quoted by (I believe) the NY Times as saying that Bergdahl wasn’t “100%” responsible for those other deaths.

So, from what I can gather, your above quote is based on one anonymous source saying Bergdahl’s desertion is not “100%” responsible for those deaths. Which, of course, implicitly means he bears some responsibility. If someone says you are not 100% responsible for something, but does not say explicitly you are “not responsible”, that means you have responsibility.

The truth would be that of course, we don’t know if other missions would have taken those soldies to the same areas on the same dates, so we don’t know whether some of those other soldiers may have died absent Bergdahl’s desertion. We also must put a lot of blame on the terrorist fighter who actually killed the soldiers. So, it is true that Bergdahl is not “100%” responsible.

As far as saying “other soldiers” claim its not true. You are lying on two fronts. 1) you are claiming it is more than one other soldier, which appears to be completely false; and 2) they don’t claim it is not true – they claim it is not “100%” true.

So, it appears that your argument is that one anonymous soldier – who you are accepting as more credible than all of the other soldiers who came forward publicly – said that Bergdahl is not 100% responsible but some smaller percentage responsible.d

So, by your own argument you therefore admit that Bergdahl’s desertion is responsible in part for the other soldiers’ deaths.

dogsoldier on June 4, 2014 at 1:41 PM

But because those facts differed from what verby, and others, wanted to believe, those facts (and those who uttered them) are simply dismissed and marginalized as being little more than offering ‘opinions’ for political advantage.

After all, as in all cases of projection, since the left has no problem pushing opinions as facts, they assume that their opponents also have no moral, ethical, or intellectual impediment towards doing the same dishonest tactic.

That’s the crux of Verby and Van’s dishonest efforts to disassemble and discredit the primary source observations of Bergdahl’s (and in 2004, Kerry’s) fellow service members. Since it doesn’t match the narrative they want, and they have no problem lying to promote a desired narrative, it stands as ‘fact’ that the right will also lie to promote a desired narrative – which in this case is to highlight the illegal actions of the feckless, mendacious, and corrupt President.

It’s great she was able to overcome her disability. There are a lot of people out there who pooh-pooh the idea of ADD/ADHD. But I’ve seen kids who just could not focus or sit still sit at all and to deny them the medication they need to allow them to function properly is child abuse.

I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 48. By then my life was pretty much a wreck. I just wanted to go to everybody and say, I couldn’t help it. But even some of my close friends would still say the stereotypical, “Why can’t you just… ?”

Kudos to your “friend.”

davidk on June 4, 2014 at 2:33 PM

As to “Collaborator” I’d be a little cautious. Exactly how much a PFC in a Line Infantry unit can “collaborate” with the enemy? I doubt, seriously, he taught them to make bombs…I think the Taliban know pretty much all there is to know about IED’s & I doubt a 19 y.o. PFC knows too much about bomb-making…I doubt he revealed too much of anything they didn’t already know. Again, he was PFC, in an Infantry unit… it’s not like he was an ossifer or a Special Warfare Operator or an Electronic Warfare Operator or an Intelligence NCO. He carried a rifle & humped a ruck… it’s tough, it’s dangerous, it’s honourable, but it doesn’t make him Sun Tzu, either.

Nice catch…I forgot about Liawatha….

We will see what comes out.

I sure hope something does. The military finds it much harder to just hang an indefinite length investigation out there, but they could still try to bury it.

If the story holds water, it wasn’t so much that he was telling them how to make IEDs but where to place them to maximize effect. Insider info.

Ah, that makes more sense.

And, yes, if he is a collaborator, I hope we can hang him twice.

BTW the fact that the Left is still using the term “Swiftboat” as an insult ten years later shows just how much damage they perceive was done by that group in 2004.

Del Dolemonte on June 4, 2014 at 4:20 PM

“Swift-boating,” as you may recall, is when critics tell the truth about someone’s military service when the truth is unhelpful to Democrats.

Nice definition — succinct and witty.

AesopFan on June 4, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Just as an aside – we should never have kept the jihadists we captured as prisoners. After interrogation, we should have killed them. This should be the big lesson that we take from the arguments about GITMO and the release of terrorists.

The Geneva conventions allow you to kill non-uniformed combatants as spies.

Regarding accusations of Bergdahl’s collaboration with the Taliban, I have read about and saw squad-mate interviews that contained the following:

- intercepted radio chatter after his defection included Taliban fighters saying Bergdahl was informing the Taliban how to dismantle and rig a cell phone as an IED detonator
- intercepted chatter saying he was describing small unit maneuver tactics when ambushed and when ambushing. The Taliban said they knoew much of what he said but did learn new details

Reports from earlier said Bergdahl showed an unnatural level of interest in the reasons behind small unit tactics – beyond what a normal trainee/SPC would care about.

More than one squad-mate reported that the effectiveness of Taliban IED and ambush attacks increased after Bergdahl’s desertion.

Even aside from the soldiers who are complaining, what happened to the left believing that the moms of dead soldiers have absolute moral authority to be critical of the White House? Do the moms of the soldiers who were killed or injured looking for Bergdahl, or who were killed or injured capturing the Taliban 5 have the right to be critical of the WH for this swap?

txmomof6 on June 4, 2014 at 5:13 PM

Swift-boating. Yep – telling the truth. What liberals can’t stand.

TfromV on June 4, 2014 at 6:18 PM

Chuck Todd needs to explain Bergdahls email he sent to his folks 2 years ago that was uncovered by Rolling Stone Mag (whose liberal, lol). He also needs to explain why he left behind his helmet, gear when he dissapeared… Then I’d like Chuck to explain why Obama traded 5 bad guys for 1 deserter and yet hasn’t lifted a finger to get 1 marine out of a mexican prison (mexico is suppose to be an alli). And Bergdahl looked in pretty dang good shape to me, wouldn’t it be funny if the middle east exposed just how helpful bergdahl was to them, lol.

No difference at all between Susan Rice for brains and upchuck Toad.

These ‘spokespeople’ are going to end up eating their own words when one or more of the five released terrorists launches another attack.

There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand Roman numerals and those who don’t:

NFL to stop using Roman numerals for Super Bowl 50 game to be played in 2016 – @darrenrovell

davidk on June 4, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Because 51 in Roman numerals is LI. Which would remind people of what the Obama Administration always does.

Steve Z on June 5, 2014 at 12:32 PM
