New Bergdahl counter-scandal: A Republican put soldiers in his unit in touch with the media, you know

posted at 1:21 pm on June 3, 2014 by Allahpundit

The reason you have allegedly smart liberals like Chris Hayes moronically implying that the U.S. should pay any price to bring a missing soldier home, even if he went missing deliberately, is because they can’t make the argument they really want to make. The argument for defending a deal this palpably terrible is, simply, that they’re stuck with it now thanks to O and can’t afford to let the White House bleed endlessly over it. There’s no reason on the merits why this should be a partisan issue: There’s credible evidence from the men who served with him that Bergdahl deserted and there’s documentary evidence that the Taliban Five are highly dangerous. You shouldn’t have to hand in your liberal card for thinking, “Yeah, that’s a dumb deal.” But with elections five months away and Obama already wounded by a scandal related to veterans, they can’t leave him exposed to more bipartisan criticism. The Bergdahl swap is being “politicized” — by the left, of necessity.

Which is why this lame “story” is suddenly a big deal on Twitter.

A former Bush Administration official hired, then resigned, as Mitt Romney’s foreign policy spokesman played a key role in publicizing critics of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the released prisoner of war…

Reached by phone, [Richard] Grenell’s partner at Capitol Media Partners, Brad Chase, confirmed that the firm had been helping the soldiers get their story out.

“Obviously Ric is a well known Republican and these guys found him on Twitter and reached out asking for help in getting their story out,” Chase said. “Ric obviously saw that this is something that needed to be told and came to me and others in our firm, and I and some of the others determined that this was a story that we wanted to work on.”

Chase said the New York Times’ referring to them as “Republican strategists” was “100% factually inaccurate” because he himself is not a Republican. But a producer for the Michael Berry show, a radio show that one of the soldiers spoke on told BuzzFeed that Grenell was the point of contact for the bookings.

The accusations against Bergdahl have been public for at least two years, thanks to Michael Hastings and Rolling Stone. Cody Full, one of the men from Bergdahl’s unit who suspects him of desertion, tweeted his suspicions for hours on Saturday night, two days before any media found him. No one seriously believes that the allegations against Bergdahl are being fed to his squad mates by the GOP; on the contrary, I can only imagine how insulted Full and his comrades would be to stand accused of making up lies about a POW to serve some political party’s agenda. But all of that is beside the point. The point of a piece like this, treating it as unusual that partisan operatives might liaise for people who share their criticism of the other side (remember when Anita Dunn’s firm began representing Sandra Fluke?), is to imply that there’s some sort of partisan dirty trick being played without ever clearly stating what that trick might be. The “argument,” such as it is, is that there are Republican fingerprints here and therefore you don’t have to pay close attention going forward to these years-old, wholly independent accusations against Bergdahl from fellow veterans. It’s another partisan food fight, “Berghazi,” as Ed Schultz sneeringly called it yesterday.

I eagerly await the interviews with Bergdahl’s supporters from his old unit, assuming the DNC can find any. Exit quotation from this miserable, frightened partisan hack, who now occupies a seat in the U.S. Senate:

Are the military’s many, many Bergdahl skeptics now “Obama haters” by definition?

The only politicization of this was by the Democrats in the Administration that made Bergdahl’s unit sign NDAs that barred them from talking.

The White House got an unfair head start on all fronts:
- Congress knew about it after the Bergdahl family.
- Intel and DOD had their “forced consensus”.
- The unit couldn’t share their story to stop the deal from going thru.

A lot of people chose to fight and did not choose to walk away from their squad.

That was the first of many betrayals.

This whole think stinks, from the NDA… cripes, I only remember signing a couple of those and they had to do with being in actual classified locations – not to be kept quiet about someone deserting his own squad.

Maybe the Army wanted to keep it quiet so it wouldn’t lower morale, hard to determine what goes through the minds of the brass…

Are the military’s many, many Bergdahl skeptics now “Obama haters” by definition?

Well, we know how the left feels about the military so it may well regard the criticisms of Bergdahl as fairy tales concoted by evil Republican conspirators.

The problem for the left is that they’re clearly behind on responses to this mess, given the 2010 Pentagon inquiry and Bergdahl’s “farewell note.” It’s effectively impossible for them to discredit all this, especially once Bergdahl’s squadmates start getting in front of cameras and once the contents of the note are leaked.

So what’s this POS senator going to say when the Army formally charges Bergdahl with desertion and treason?

Sources who had debriefed two former members of Bergdahl’s unit told Fox News Bergdahl left behind a note the night he left base in which he expressed disillusionment with the Army and being an American and suggested that he wanted to renounce his American citizenship and go find the Taliban. U.S. military officials would not confirm the existence of the letter, but if it does exist, it would likely be part of the original file on the investigation into Bergdahl’s disappearance.

Nixon was forced to resign because Republicans no longer supported him (Democrats never did, of course). Our great tragedy is that modern Democrats will not do the same in an incomparably worse administration.

A very weak dismissal of the relevance of this detail.
You think it’s ‘lame’ that this is being pointed out.
What it is…is revealing.

Revealing of what?

Are the military’s many, many Bergdahl skeptics now “Obama haters” by definition?

I’d say a good many are.

Where are they? Unleash the Democratic operatives to locate them.

But more to the point, if you reverse the above, it’s 100%.

And there you have it. The dishonesty reigns supreme. No interest in the truth or justice, just in not seeing your guy hoisted.

Regardless of who helped bring out the truth, the truth is truth. The truth is that those who served with Bergdahl are not happy. The truth is that the Pentagon knew since 2010 he was a deserter. The truth is that he left behind evidence he was a terrorist sympathizer at the very least. The truth is that 6 men in his platoon, and maybe 8 others in other platoons, died searching for him. And for you the only thing that matters is who is presenting this truth. Well you can just go die in a Fluking fire.

Really sad to watch Obama haters attack this kid who CHOSE to fight to protect the rest of us, just to score political points.

Chose to fight?

The Rolling Stone article reports that Bergdahl told his friends that he had enlisted in the Army because he “wanted to help the Afghan people.”

Like most leftists, Bergdahl is an idiot. If he wanted to “help the Afghan people” then why join the U.S. Army at a time when the U.S. was engaged in a war in Afghanistan? He could have joined the Peace Corps, or the Red Crescent, or some other humanitarian organization that was helping out there. But no, Bergdahl chose to become a soldier, and then became angry when he saw that Afghan civilians (many of whom collaborate with AQ and the Taliban against the U.S.) sometimes get injured or even killed in war. It shocked the poor little ballerina/barrista to his core. Life outside mommy and daddy’s basement is a lot different than junior thought it would be. Who could have guessed that, in a war, soldiers are expected to fight, rather than dance?

AZCoyote on June 3, 2014 at 1:58 PM

So what’s this POS senator going to say when the Army formally charges Bergdahl with desertion and treason?

RobertE on June 3, 2014 at 1:29 PM

You are seriously delusional if you think that is EVER going to happen under this Administration.

The most powerful officer in the U.S. military, General Martin E. Dempsey, Chair of the Joint Chiefs, has not ruled out the possibility of a court-martial of Sgt. Bergdahl for desertion.

Chuck Todd: White House Expected ‘Euphoria’ Over Bergdahl’s Release

Todd: White House was ‘caught off guard’

MSNBC’S Chuck Todd observed Tuesday that the White House was “caught off guard” by the disastrous public roll out of their prisoner exchange for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl.

Todd and Andrea Mitchell agreed that the White House had likely thought there would be “some euphoria around this, the only POW that was remaining in Afghanistan, that there would be a rally around the flag. That didn’t happen.”

“They were expecting criticisms of Gitmo, criticisms of the detainees that were chosen,” Todd said. “They did not expect this criticism of the attempt to go get Bergdahl in the way that it was done.”

Todd noted the White House’s change of tone over the last several days, using as an example a Pentagon spokesperson who defended Bergdahl’s rescue in the New York Times today by citing the Navy’s policy of rescuing sailors who go overboard, regardless of whether they fell out of the ship or jumped themselves. “That wasn’t necessarily what they were saying on Sunday.”

I mean, like, who couldn’t see this coming???

A former Bush Administration official hired, then resigned, as Mitt Romney’s foreign policy spokesman played a key role in publicizing critics of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the released prisoner of war

I’m confused. Is this a high crime or misdemeanor?

Leftists know that all they have to do is flood the air with BS for a little while until another Barky scandal erupts (there’s always a new Barky scandal of idiocy and treason on the horizon) and they can all move on and forget Bergdahl and the five free terrorists. The Vichy GOP is never going to even try to do anything about this and the Weeping Boner and his gang will stop talking about it (if they ever even START talking about it) and treat it like ancient history. Gone. Forgotten. Deep into the past .. before recorded history.

Sad, but true. Leftists might even get around to just cr@pping on cars in the street to derail the conversation for a while. The world knows no bounds for the leftists when there is no one to call them on their idiocy and treason and no one around who will ever hold them accountable for their actions. Boner and the Vichy gang are too busy trying to give aid and comfort to the invading illegals to be bothered with this stuff.

Isn’t Obama heading to Europe for the D-Day ceremony, where Vladimir Putin will be waiting?

That should be fun. Could be the mental breaking point for Obama.

MichaelGabriel on June 3, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Just when you think you’ve seen it all from this administration and now this. I wonder what there story will be when one of the 5 men released is responsible for more American lives?

DDay on June 3, 2014 at 2:01 PM

If Bergdahl was a “POW”, he should have remained a “POW”.

In what way? For starters, those people sought out a media contact, not the other way round. Secondly, it doesn’t change the facts about what happened. Bergdahl’s desertion was a Known Fact several years prior, and the administration ordered soldiers not to talk about this, despite a lack of any classification of the material.

What exactly is it about the truth that you think people have no business knowing? Or that people should not use the resources in place to make that happen?

The Schaef on June 3, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told reporters on Monday the Obama administration wanted to release Taliban fighters even without the prisoner exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who is accused of deserting his post and later getting captured by the Taliban.

“About a year or so ago they were talking about releasing Taliban as a confidence building measure not an exchange for Bergdahl. No one that I know said that they got any briefing,” McCain said.

Breitbart.

Ah, yes, because the Israelis releasing all those terrorists because of US pressure has built confidence in the PLO……that they can keep on killing Israelis.
