Report: “Many” in intelligence community fear Bergdahl may have been an active collaborator with the Taliban

posted at 5:21 pm on June 2, 2014 by Allahpundit

Explosive stuff from James Rosen, whose private e-mail would surely be under surveillance by Eric Holder after this story if it wasn’t already.

The more damning the accusations against Bergdahl, the less the prisoner swap adds up.

A senior official confirms to Fox News that the conduct of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl — both in his final stretch of active duty in Afghanistan and then, too, during his time when he lived among the Taliban — has been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. intelligence community and is the subject of “a major classified file.”

In conveying as much, the Defense Department source confirmed to Fox News that many within the intelligence community harbor serious outstanding concerns not only that Bergdahl may have been a deserter but that he may have been an active collaborator with the enemy

Sources told Fox News that many officials in the Executive Branch are “quite baffled” by the White House’s decision to allow the president to stand alongside Bergdahl’s father this past weekend, given the father’s history of controversial statements, emails and online posts.

There’s a Pentagon file that may or may not accuse this guy of outright treason and not only does Obama still do the deal for five Taliban bigwigs, he holds a big White House presser with Bergdahl’s father? What?

Rosen’s not the only reporter hearing whispers about collaboration either. Stephen Hayes of the Standard spoke to several soldiers from Bergdahl’s squad (one of whom tweeted at length about his suspicions this weekend) and heard lots of doubts — and not just about desertion.

[S]everal military officials who spoke with THE WEEKLY STANDARD noted privately that Taliban attacks on U.S. forces in the Paktika province seemed to increase in frequency and effectiveness [after Bergdahl disappeared]…

[O]thers wonder whether Bergdahl helped the Taliban, either willfully or under duress. In the hours after he disappeared, according to sources familiar with the intelligence, U.S. troops received an intelligence report that Bergdahl stopped in a local village and asked how to find the Taliban. That report, if it exists, is not mentioned in the Wikileaks documents related to Bergdahl’s disappearance. But several sources with knowledge of the case insist that the report is true.

Says one platoon mate: “He’s friends with the delivery driver, he’s friends with the goat farmer, he’s got relationships with all the locals—and he stops to ask how he can find the Taliban? He could have just gone to Habib the local goat farmer and floated along with the locals.”

Intel officials told Hayes that the Pentagon thoroughly investigated Bergdahl’s disappearance, questioning members of his squad many times. Among the things they wanted to know was whether he had info that could have helped the Taliban, be it medical, tactical (how to deal with IEDs), or strategic. Two other sources told him that Bergdahl was, in fact, considered AWOL by the Army — but that the Pentagon ultimately backed down on formally designating him that way, probably because the politics of accusing Bergdahl while he was in enemy hands would have been simply too hot for comfort.

But if all that’s true … why was Bergdahl promoted in absentia to sergeant in 2011? Why would he be in line for another promotion, to staff sergeant, this month? And why would the White House let itself get within a thousand miles of the Bergdahl family with suspicions like these ready to bubble over? It’s one thing to do a deal to get an American back; it’s another to give away the terrorist farm as part of it; and it’s another still to give away the farm for a guy whom your own investigators think may be a Taliban sympathizer. Remember, the ostensible point of the prisoner exchange is to set a precedent so that Obama can release other detainees at Gitmo later this year and finally close the prison. The last thing you’d want to do in that case is trade five especially dangerous detainees for someone whose loyalty to the U.S. is in serious question even within the administration’s own ranks. It’s a political tornado in the making; if Bergdahl does end up being proved a deserter or worse, Democrats will run screaming from future Gitmo prisoner releases. Just doesn’t make sense. Maybe the White House has reason to believe that Bergdahl’s getting a bum rap and really was taken against his will — but in that case, why isn’t Carney or anyone else pushing back hard with that information? What’s going on here?

Pretty Simple:

Obama loves himself traitors. He gets to release 5 guys who will kill Americans. He gets back a guy who enabled others to kill Americans.

I mean, what other answer is there? To negotiate the release of a suspected traitor–unless the idea is to bring him home and summarily try and execute the guy for treason, which I’m sure is not what’s happening here.

Obama just loves people who kill Americans.

Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they’re in such an insulated bubble that they really didn’t think there’d be much pushback on this. At least not in terms of the deserter angle. At worst, it would just be a few members of Congress b-tching about not being consulted beforehand.

On the other hand, doesn’t this rise to “aid and comfort to the enemy?” I mean, imagine Roosevelt in WWII sending Japan several high ranking military guys in exchange for Tokyo Rose, in order to throw Tokyo Rose a parade.

I don’t care that Roosevelt was in a wheelchair, I bet Patton would personally have shot him. With Eisenhower holding the ammo box. And Nimitz ready to bury the body at sea.

They hurt the country.

Bergdahl has not been seen publically since his release nor has he made any statements to the press. This probably means he’s being debriefed by Army Intel / CIA.

He could have sympathized with the Afghans and/or gone native, which would explain why he wasn’t beheaded immediately or tortured. However, he could also have posed as a sympathizer and is now providing valuable intel to the Western forces. I wonder why no one on either the right or left has considered that possibility.

‘The ends justifies the means’ – and with this Administration, it’s all about political expediency and achieving political ends. Democrats will not run screaming. The vast majority of the GOP, embracing their ‘go along to get along’ sellout will do nothing.

The goal is all about ending the war by any means possible and closing Gitmo to appease the progressive-fascist base prior to Nov 2014.

Vanceone on June 2, 2014 at 5:25 PM

I hate to say it, but part of me is starting to think there’s something to that theory. You never want to believe that this country could elect a man like that, but then you look at his past and who he’s associated himself with and it’s not Oliver Stone territory to think we’re dealing with someone who truly doesn’t give a sh-t about the well being of a lot of Americans, including our troops.

Just look at what he’s done in 5 1/2 years. Massive budget cuts to the military. Taking several months to commit to a troop surge in Afghanistan, then giving 30,000 instead of the 40,000 requested while also simultaneously announcing our future withdrawal to the world. Abandoning our ambassador and soldiers in Benghazi and covering up what happened there. Doing nothing about the VA to the point where not only are veterans dying from a lack of care, but the long waits that led to their deaths were being covered up and the employees who did so were rewarded financially for their deception. And now this GITMO detainee swap for a known deserter and possible traitor.

If you hate America’s military and want to weaken it beyond repair, budget cuts are one way. But I can’t think of anything more devastating than to utterly destroy morale amongst our troops, their families, and the American public at large. Obama has done wonders in this area with over 2 1/2 years still left in his Presidency.

Just as important, I do not support trading 5 hardened jihadists, including two of which are wanted by The Hague for war crimes concerning their actions in the slaughter of 6,000 Shi’ite men and boys in the ethnic cleansing of Mazar-i-Sharif, that are clear and present dangers to the United States for someone who put himself in jeopardy.

Schadenfreude on June 2, 2014 at 5:38 PM

And yet the Susan Rice interview with Candy Crowley suggested that he was taken in the fog of war. A capture in the heat of battle. I think the DoD pretty much knows that he defected. I also think it interesting that the administration thought they could spin this into a “leave no man behind” story (which is why there was a Rose Garden victory lap with Bergdahl’s America-hating parents). The only thing I’m somewhat surprised about is how quickly the story of Bergdahl as war hero has collapsed.

And why would the White House let itself get within a thousand miles of the Bergdahl family with suspicions like these ready to bubble over?

Because they hate America and want the Taliban to win, AND they know the Boehner doesn’t have the balls to start impeachment proceedings, AND they know the dinosaur media will cover for them.

SouthernGent on June 2, 2014 at 5:49 PM

Europeans have been laydowns negotiating with terrorists for a while now…And Progressives want the US to be European.

All for one utopian crapola…as if we didn’t fight a damned revolution to escape eternal servitude to Europe and it’s problems.

Scratch a Progressive and underneath you find a seething moon bat Fascist!

AP…do you not get it yet that this President cares little for rules and doing the right thing. He is out to fundamentally change this country and will if someone in Congress doesn’t start standing up to his lawlessness.

Me too. Either they are the stupidest Administration in History or they truly believe they can do or say anything and they won’t be called on it. It’s worked for them so far…

Asked if the US regards the Taliban as a terrorist group, @PressSec says Taliban regarded as an “enemy combatant” in conflict with the US.

Allah, quit trying to find a political “justification” – from their perspective – for everything Barry does. He is by no means a genius and his administration have proven to be a group of mental midgets, especially in foreign affairs.

That was one of the very first posts on the very first Bergdahl Hot Gas thread, late on Saturday afternoon. It’s since gone viral!

Del Dolemonte on June 2, 2014 at 5:57 PM

…anybody talking about the VA?…I’m sure they have formulated answers!

KOOLAID2 on June 2, 2014 at 5:57 PM

Obama and company is actively undercutting and demoralizing the military as well as the American people right in front of you. Your president hates America. He is actively trying to destroy it.

Unless you are good with it, willfully blind, too obsessed with Facebook on your iPad or iPhone or complacently naive, that should be painfully obvious to anyone with more than two functioning brain cells.

So I ponder, why did Hopey move on this deal in Lightening quickness,
but dragged his feet, on sending help on the night in question in
Benghazi!!

Jus say’n!

canopfor on June 2, 2014 at 5:57 PM

I remember very clearly some initial reports of evidence that Bergdahl had deserted.

Then those reports dried up and how he wound up in Taliban custody was lost in the overarching narrative that he was a “prisoner”.

Without even looking back I recall reports that he had sent his belongings home and left late at night without his military gear. You don’t send your gear home unless your leaving, one way or another.

And the old man is a looney sympathizer. That was known too. It’s not news.

I’m thinking this thing was timed to take the spotlight off the VA on the assumption an arguably defensible position on a different subject would serve better than public focus on a totally indefensible one with no end in sight. They’re getting the new narrative they wanted, but sending out Susan Rice, of all people, to spread another BS narrative, this time about rescuing a “hero” and “we leave no man behind” (!), has a hint of madness about it. Mounting evidence confirming Bergdahl’s disappearance was desertion is not only going to raise serious questions about the wisdom of this trade, it’s going to feed back heavily into the overarching theme of a fundamentally dishonest presidency, lying to the country to serve his political agenda.

”Obama is a Traitor in Chief”was at one time an aspiration of his.It is now a badge he wears with pride.

How can obama believe he was taken against his will while everyone there at the time believes he was not?

Blake on June 2, 2014 at 5:47 PM

With the lazy stupid rat-eared coward, it isn’t about facts. It’s about what story provides the most political advantage. After getting caught killing scores of veterans at the VA, the political calculation IMO was that he could turn this into the idea that he was a President that not only ends wars but makes sure that no man is left behind. With the added bonus of getting rid of five reasons why Gitmo can’t be closed.

It sort of collapsed on him when it turns out he negotiated with terrorists and the man left behind was not really a POW but rather a deserter if not a defector whose unit really doesn’t have a whole lot of nice things to say about him.
