Parents of fallen soldier: Our son died looking for Bergdahl and the military lied to us about it

posted at 3:21 pm on June 2, 2014 by Allahpundit

Their son, Second Lieutenant Darryn Andrews, was also named in Nathan Bradley Bethea’s Daily Beast piece today as one of the men from his battalion killed in action during the search.

If the accusation is true, it wouldn’t be the first time higher-ups tweaked the narrative about how an American soldier died to make it less problematic for the military.

At the time his family say they were told that his men were hunting a Taliban commander and that the truck at the front of their group ended in a hole after being hit by an Improvised Explosive Device.

As the men got out to try and move the truck, a Taliban fighter with a rocket propelled grenade emerged and fired at them.

Lt Andrews was the only one to see it and tackled three of his men to prevent them being hit. He took a direct hit and died…

Speaking to MailOnline from his home in Cameron, Texas, Mr Andrews said: ‘When my son was killed there was no mention of searching for this guy (Bergdahl) but once all this has come out we got several emails and calls from soldiers who were with him in Afghanistan.

‘They say their mission was to search for Bergdahl. He (Lt Andrews) was killed in the search. We have no documentation of that.

According to Bethea, Andrews and his squad were on patrol to a village near the area where Bergdahl went missing when they were attacked. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews claim that the same troops who told them the truth about why their son was really on that mission also told them that they were forced to sign “a letter” that they wouldn’t discuss the circumstances of the incident. That detail is also corroborated by Jake Tapper’s CNN report this morning, claiming that several troops who served with Bergdahl were asked to sign nondisclosure agreements. (“Highly unusual,” per one of Stephen Hayes’s sources in the defense establishment.) But if you don’t buy any of that, read the firsthand accounts — which I linked here — from troops who claim to have served with Bergdahl who are also skeptical of why he went missing. I didn’t realize this, but apparently the Pentagon conducted its own investigation in 2010 into why Bergdahl disappeared and concluded that, indeed, he walked away from his post. Quote: “[A]fter an initial flurry of searching the military decided not to exert extraordinary efforts to rescue him, according to a former senior defense official who was involved in the matter.” I’ve been asking people on Twitter this afternoon whether it’s S.O.P. to risk soldiers’ lives to conduct searches in a dangerous area to find a suspected deserter. Answer: Yes, just because you can’t be absolutely sure that he wasn’t taken against his will. The fact that the military quickly scaled back “extraordinary efforts” to rescue him, though, speaks volumes. Clearly, they weren’t willing to pay a price steeper than what they’d already paid to find a guy whose disappearance they suspected wasn’t accidental.

Via the Corner, here’s Jay Carney once again ducking a question about whether Bergdahl deserted. The White House can’t have been taken by surprise by the circumstances of Bergdahl’s capture, right? They had that Pentagon report from 2010 to consult; Michael Hastings wrote a widely read story for Rolling Stone two years ago raising the possibility of desertion as well. They went into this prisoner swap with their eyes open, and yet Carney seems to have no spin prepared to deal with the inevitable questions. I guess they counted on the men from Bergdahl’s squad staying silent as we handed over five Taliban savages to get him back. Big mistake.

What has Talibama and his Regime ever actually told the truth about?

People need to learn sometime soon, to stop assuming the rats are being truthful from the start, because they aren’t, about anything.

Weeks of searching turned into months. The military pushed his parents and fellow soldiers to sign nondisclosure agreements. But before everyone signed, a comrade from his unit publicly called on Facebook for Bergdahl’s execution as a deserter defector.

I don’t think they actually knew just how bad the situation was. No one was talking about it because they were ordered to keep their mouth’s shut, and so Bergdahl’s situation was not common knowledge. And an administration that learns everything about itself from the morning paper is just now learning how maybe Bergdahl wasn’t the distraction they were looking for.

pambi on June 2, 2014 at 3:44 PM

I guess they counted on the men from Bergdahl’s squad staying silent as we handed over five Taliban savages to get him back. Big mistake.

Along with the now well established patterns from this Administration around abuses of power, ignoring inconvenient laws, embracing the ‘ends justifies the means’, the lies, deceptions, and obfuscations made in the name of political expediency – we are witnessing yet another far too commonplace pattern of moral, ethical, and intellectual bankruptcy….. this Administration’s continued ‘surprise’ that there are some with the audacity to question their sociopathic and contemptuous actions.

For 5 1/2 years they’ve depended on a corrupt, arrogant, and compliant media to cover their tyranny and bankruptcy. That media has paid a high price in credibility for carrying water for the Obama reprobates — and one has to wonder if the media has decided to enter a suicide pact in order to keep shilling for the progressive-fascist ideology?

These people can’t tell the truth to save their souls can they.

gophergirl on June 2, 2014 at 3:24 PM

The core problem is that these people sold their souls in the name of progressive-fascism. The ends justifies the means – and part of their cult is that they decide what is morally right / justified. This way, they don’t have to admit that they’ve sold their soul in favor of enabling tyranny and embracing power.

There is a battle between good and evil – and evil is winning.

They’ve managed to intimidate countless others into silence in these previous scandals, but if they thought they could keep American soldiers quiet over this, they were delusional. Just like with the VA scandal, when we’re talking dead troops, some folks are going to talk even if it costs them their careers.

I guess the good news for the regime is this will in fact take the VA scandal off the front pages. The bad news is it’s just being replaced with another scandal.

I have to confess that my first reaction to the headline about the five-for-one agreement mediated by officials in Qatar was puzzlement as to how the Obama administration had managed to make such a deal for only five prisoners when the Israelis are routinely forced to release hundreds or more than a thousand terrorists for only one of their own people. Is it that the Israelis are simply too easy a mark in such negotiations? Are Americans better at driving a hard bargain? But the more I’ve read about the five prisoners who have been freed in exchange for Bergdahl, the less impressed I am with the negotiating acumen of the administration. Far from cutting a better deal than the Israelis tend to be able to do, this swap may actually be far worse in terms of the potential danger of the particular individuals involved and the administration’s future attitude toward the conflict. While the Israelis often pay too high a price for their hostages, they do so without conceding defeat in the long-term struggle in which they are engaged. The Bergdahl deal appears to be not just a lopsided swap but also an indication that the U.S. may be conceding defeat to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

- Bowe Bergdahl

If Bergdahl was ashamed to be an American, why should we have expended American blood and treasure trying to find him and then given up 5 hardened terrorists for him?

I guess ‘patriotism’ is now defined as someone, who is ashamed to be an American, costing the lives of soldiers doing their duty and being exchanged for 5 hardened, top-level jihadists, two of whom are wanted by The Hague for war crimes, including the slaughter of 6,000 Shi’ite men and boys in Mazar-i-Sharif.

And, I suppose, for me to be considered ‘patriotic,’ I must wholeheartedly support all of this.

Barack HUSSEIN Obama is a master at taqiyya…It’s all beginning to come out now. The fundamental transformation is complete. There will be no presidential election in 2016. You heard it here first…

bimmcorp on June 2, 2014 at 3:56 PM

As soon as possible we must get Ms Clinton on the record as in support of what Obama did with this deal.

Then she can not lie out of it so easy.

APACHEWHOKNOWS on June 2, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Bowe’s whackjob Dad thanking Allah in Parsi, was the first clue.

kingsjester on June 2, 2014 at 3:48 PM

‘parsi’ is the name of an indian ethnic group descended from persians. if you were refering to the language it is ‘farsi’.

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on June 2, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Watch the Pentagon now prosecute or demote these other soldiers for violating their nondisclosure agreement. But they’ll welcome Bergdahl back with open arms.

All part of that Fundamental Transformation that Obama promised…..reward deserters, negotiate with terrorists, and punish those who dare speak the truth about any of it.

rockmom on June 2, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Obama’s firing of generals now taking on another dimension…

Like Carney’s admitted, ‘the Bergdahl situation has been a project for the last five years’ (that’s a paraphrased ‘quote’ — but Carney admitted the other day that “Bergdahl” has been an ongoing development for “the past five years” or to that effect).

Elections will be done, Democrats will not control the Senate, a R will be Pres., and Boehner will not be speaker of the House.

you will see it on Drudge first, once it safe to post regarding this

hotair will have the news too

APACHEWHOKNOWS on June 2, 2014 at 4:00 PM

Electricity prices will necessarily skyrocket.
Fundamentally transform America.
A civilian force equally equipped to the military.

astonerii on June 2, 2014 at 3:52 PM

Ah yes, but he said all those things before he was anointed. So, while they have done ALL of those things, none of those can be blamed on Talibama.

The same holds true for all the “good” things he lied about to get anointed and then DIDN’T do. Those can’t be blamed on him either.

See how that works?

Meople on June 2, 2014 at 4:00 PM

The core problem is that these people sold their souls in the name of progressive-fascism. The ends justifies the means – and part of their cult is that they decide what is morally right / justified. This way, they don’t have to admit that they’ve sold their soul in favor of enabling tyranny and embracing power.

There is a battle between good and evil – and evil is winning.

Athos on June 2, 2014 at 3:44 PM

This.^ Only in this upside-down Obama world would a man who deserted in the face of the enemy – and probably collaborated with them – be celebrated as a returning hero and given a parade – while five of the worst of the worst terrorist go free.

It gets worse every day.

TarheelBen on June 2, 2014 at 4:01 PM

And how many good honorable soldiers died capturing those 5 Taliban commanders?

bitsy on June 2, 2014 at 4:01 PM

KOOLAID2 on June 2, 2014 at 4:04 PM

I guess the good news for the regime is this will in fact take the VA scandal off the front pages. The bad news is it’s just being replaced with another scandal.

Doughboy on June 2, 2014 at 3:45 PM

Well, yeah. Replacing one set of dead soldiers with another, whilst breaking the law and sending five murderous thugs out to kill more Americans.
Then using Susan Rice to lie about it on Sunday morning TV.

butch on June 2, 2014 at 4:04 PM

They want the VA deal out of the head lines. Prediction: They will find unions are gumming up the management at the VA. They will find direct linkage to increases in VA budgets and democrat fundraising.

DanMan on June 2, 2014 at 3:30 PM

Harry Reid just made a big ole smiley appearance pushing “a new bill” to increase “emergency funding to the VA.” They really need the whole issue of the VA and medical issues pertaining to the military to just go away. Make it about anything other than what it is.

Very well Midas. Hope you are doing well. I am a wee bit distracted. Working off thread on some HA thread analysis. ; )

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on June 2, 2014 at 4:03 PM

Uh no they don’t. The common language for them is Arabic. What the US calls Modern Standard Arabic. The Taliban operates in quite a few different countries all with different languages. They communicate in MSA. Get your “facts” straight.
