Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on June 1, 2014 by Allahpundit

Lots of Shinseki fallout on this morning’s Sunday shows, as you might expect: Bernie Sanders and (sigh) John McCain will face-off over next steps in Congress on “Face the Nation” while veterans Rep. Adam Kinzinger and Paul Rieckhoff of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America will discuss the future of the VA on “Meet the Press.” What makes this a very special Sunday, though, is not one but two guest appearances by Susan “Spontaneous Protest” Rice, who’ll be rolling out some new talking points on Edward Snowden on “This Week” and “State of the Union.” She told reporters a few days ago that, contra Snowden’s claims, he wasn’t trained as a spy. Tune in today to find out which dubious White House spin bloggers will be debunking in weeks to come.

If you’re not up for that, Mike Bloomberg is the star guest on “Meet the Press” to talk Snowden (wants him prosecuted), guns (wants ‘em banned), and his new status as conservatism’s greatest hero. The full line-up is at Politico.

Asking Rice about Snowden is like asking Mickelson about stock tips….

Let me guess. Snowden was angered by a video.

Ask her about this:

U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice is pressuring Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to “step up his pace” in releasing what the White House calls “low level” detainees at the U.S. Naval facility that houses suspected terrorist detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The New York Times reports that Rice herself is under pressure from senior White House officials who want her to speed up the release of terrorist detainees.

The only White House officials senior to the National Security Adviser are the secretary of sate, the vice president, and, of course, President Obama himself. Since it is widely accepted in political circles that Obama insists on making high-level decisions on national security matters himself, the implication is that it is President Obama himself who is insisting upon the early release of Gitmo detainees.

But the White House’s efforts to fast track the release of terrorist detainees, thought by many to continue to pose grave risks to U.S. security, is running into headwinds from a resistant secretary of defense, who must sign off on any such transfers. Speaking to reporters traveling with him on a trip to Alaska late Wednesday, Secretary Hagel was unusually direct in expressing his open opposition to White House pressure. “My name is going on that document. That’s a big responsibility,” said Hagel. He added, “I am taking my time. I owe that to the American people, to ensure that any decision I make is, in my mind, responsible.”

Hagel said the Pentagon will–for as long as necessary–continue its deliberative process that started several months ago after an asylum offer aggressively solicited by the United States was finally received from Uruguay, despite political pressure from the White House.

Hagel’s pushback against White House pressure came just days after Susan Rice, President Obama’s National Security Adviser, delivered an unusually blunt directive to Hagel, demanding that the Pentagon “provide an update on progress on detainee transfers every two weeks until further notice.”

The full details of the Rice memorandum have not been released, but the parts now circulating were leaked by an unnamed White House or Pentagon “official” to The New York Times’ Charlie Savage.

True. But certainly some are less honest/less capable than others. Rice is a minus-10 honest, -unknown but largely incapable.

And now, on this blessed day of rest, the Seventh Day, comes the DNC Media to afflict the weak-minded with government ideological propaganda. Herein you will see The Usual Suspects, a collection of Fellow Travelers in the Word of Big Government and hard leftism, but rare will be the words of truth and conservatism. And a nitwit liberal shall lead them in a second week of hand-wringing angst over the VA, with a twist of hostage-negotiating-with-terrorists politics thrown in.

Witnesseth:

“Meet the Press” on NBC
• Chuck Hagel – Pathetic RINO turned O’Bozo Admin tool
• Michael Bloomberg – Pathetic RINO turned Nanny-Stater
• Adam Kinzinger – Tea Party upstart instantly turned RINO mouthpiece
• Paul Rieckhoff – Nobody, instantly turned Sunday Morning fixture with Absolute Moral Authority
• Jane Harman – Pretend moderate, turned clownish liberal
• Newt Gingrich – Has-been conservative turned RINO

What…no important cricket matches to pre-empt this hot mess? And how does The Midget Mayor fit into the national defense lineup, exactly?

“Face the Nation” on CBS
• John McCain
• Bernie Sanders
• Michael Hayden

A RINO, a Socialist, and a DC spook-network tool compare liberal ideologies.

“This Week” on ABC
• Susan Rice – Hilarious liberal-academic-affirmative-action-administration-dupe
• Ted Cruz – Conservative! First of the day!

ABC continues the desperate DNC attempts to present Susan Rice as something other than a national joke.

“Fox News Sunday” on Fox
• Reince Priebus – GOP Establishment figurehead
• Claire McCaskill – Clownish liberal
• Jeff Miller — Conservative

“State of the Union” on CNN
• Rice – Clownish liberal
• Mike Rogers — GOPer
• Jim Jones – Formerly serious national defense careerist – he’ll be selling us some idiotic liberal crap soon, as he sniffs the wind and bilks the taxpayers for post-career riches.
• Jim Webb — Liberal
• Nicholas Burns – State Department liberal careerist

“Political Capital” on Bloomberg TV
• Nancy Pelosi – Queen of the Kook Left
• Peter Roskam – mostly conservative

“Newsmakers” on C-SPAN
• Buck McKeon — Conservative

“Al Punto” on Univision
• Mario Diaz-Balart – Amnesty RINO
• Timothy Geithner – Obama admin tool

“Enfoque” on Telemundo
• Luis Gutiérrez – Slimy Mexican Amnesty shill
• Jeff Denham – Another 2010 Conservative turned RINO by the pain of 2013

In one of the DNC Media’s occasional attempts to veil their propaganda, we have RINO Sunday — same liberal ideology, but masked with Rs from the left fringe of the GOP. They’re bluffing – it won’t work.

Jaibones on June 1, 2014 at 8:29 AM

MissMagnolia on June 1, 2014 at 8:43 AM

MTF on June 1, 2014 at 8:44 AM

Hagel seems to be having a moment of lucidity and doing the right thing thought. Dear leader can’t have that happen for too long. How does Rice have the authority to demand the Secretary of Defense to hurry it up and send me reports every 2 weeks. I’m sure Hagel will slip back into the basset hound demeanor and fulfill the Won’s every wish. He should keep a couple of the detainees for trade purposes just in case.

Kissmygrits on June 1, 2014 at 8:53 AM

I wonder if Hagel appreciates the situation he’s in by being the latest token Republican in Obama’s administration.

If he resigns, Obama would replace him with a lackey (Harry Reid would cough up 51 votes for confirmation.)

If he stays, Hagel is in for two more years of this unless he starts caving in to Obama.

You reap what you sow, Chuck.

Evan Bayh (FNS panel) defends HiLarry by defending Dubya against criticism of not correctly reading the intelligence teas leaves regarding 9-11-2001 in his first presidential year. “Intelligence matters are murky and unclear” he says in defense of HiLarry (and Dubya) yet every other Democrat wanted Dubya to be super-president and stop the horror before it occurred. These people are nothing but power-seeking political hacks. They should have a limited half-life in the political arena yet they hang around defending the power base at the expense of all the rest of us.

I wonder what the Clintons think of this. I look forward to Hillary’s take on the prisoner swap.

Wethal on June 1, 2014 at 9:46 AM

Obama used a Rose Garden press event to tout the surprise trade — which he won by making critical, last-minute concessions — while the parents of the freed soldier, Bowe Bergdahl, stood alongside.

At the end of brief event, the soldier’s father, Bob Bergdahl, recited the most frequent phrase in the Koran — “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim” —which means “In the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Compassionate.”

After Bergdahl finished his statement and his praise for Allah, Obama hugged him.

The Taliban echoed Bergdahl, saying the trade happened “due to the benevolence of Allah Almighty and the sacrifices of the heroic and courageous Mujahidin of the Islamic Emirate.”

NavyMustang on June 1, 2014 at 11:45 AM

I’ve thought all along Bayh bailed out because he saw the disaster of an Obama administration coming just as anyone with half a brain did. He’s not stupid. He was positioning himself to be the reasonable alternative in the aftermath.

He’s in a tough spot politically, either defend Hillary no matter how preposterous the narrative or run afoul of the Clinton’s well-known vindictiveness. His craven and pathetic defense of Hillary this morning establishes that he fears backlash from the score-keeping Clintons and their tools more than he values his personal credibility.

So he parroted the preposterous talking points. I notice he praises her accomplishments without ever naming any actual accomplishments, too.

I’ve respected this guy’s political chops, but I don’t see how he avoids being damaged here. If he defends her he looks like a hack, and if he doesn’t he will be targeted by the Clintonistas.

He made the wrong decision this time. If Clinton is destroyed by her failings and dereliction of duty in Benghazi, as well she may be, he’d be better off not being aligned with her.

Getting to the VA ‘phony scandal’:

The NYT lapdogs the administration with this headline:

Many Veterans Praise Care, but All Hate the Wait

In interviews and in hundreds of responses to a questionnaire posted on The New York Times website, veterans around the country expressed frustration with delayed access to care and what many described as an impenetrable and unresponsive bureaucracy at department hospitals and clinics, even as many praised the quality of care they received once they saw doctors.

Ironically, they were unable to survey or interview any of the deceased veterans, they headlined the quality of care -while following it up with a total of eight works in the body of the 1,300 word article.

Carrying that water must be tiring.

He can now lay claim to a craven and pathetic defense of Øbama’s flaunting the law, once again, in the Bergdahl matter. He said, and I quote, “It was the right thing to do!” rather than to inform Congress within the statutory 30 days of Guantanamo prisoner release. Prior to his arrogant pronouncement of “the right thing” he justified the release of a “captive” on humanitarian grounds. Had he known the real situation, rather than the Øbama administration concocted one, he might have held his tongue until the circumstances became known.

It’s always rush rush rush with these people, don’t deliberate, do what I say, shut up and stop talking and don’t ask questions. Authoritarian dictators.
