Video: America’s new viral hero, Spelling Bee Kid

posted at 12:01 pm on May 30, 2014 by Allahpundit

A morning palate cleanser as news outlets cope with the Shinseki fallout. Meet Jacob Williamson — numismatist, fantasy football coach, Tim Tebow fan, and very excited participant in the National Spelling Bee. He was the crowd favorite, for reasons that the second clip below (and this BuzzFeed highlight reel) will make clear, and ended up advancing to the finals. He had what every champion needs: Confidence. A little … too much confidence, alas. Consider this a reminder, though, in case any was needed, that in the age of YouTube a runner-up can always steal the show from the winner. Or, in this case, winners.

Per Sean Davis, you may treat this as your metaphor of the day.

Jay Carney’s son?

That’s great, but I don’t like the changes they’ve made to the bee over the years. Why in the world would you have two winners? Having a limited list of championship round words is dumb.

changer1701 on May 30, 2014 at 12:09 PM

He’s a winner in my book.

Bigbullets on May 30, 2014 at 12:10 PM

I once has a kid in class that was many grade levels above the class (and teacher) in math and knew it. My teaching joy came when a low-average math student (a girl) beat him on a hard math question, merely because his over-confidence caused him not to double-check his answer.

CurtZHP on May 30, 2014 at 12:14 PM

I had a chance to watch the bee live, and cringed during this moment.

Congrats to the two winners, and to all the other entrants. The rounds you need to get through just to get there are grueling and would eliminate just about anyone.

Not the first time their have been co-winners, this was the fourth time. It has just been a very long time since it happened last.

Okay, I admit it: I’m trying to distract Hot Air readers from the VA news that we’ve been blogging about for more than a week now.

Guess you missed Ed’s massive Shinseki resignation thread at the top of the Top Picks column, huh?

Now, now. Or should that read? C’mon, c’mon now.

it wasnt even that difficult of a word. ‘pride before the fall’, or some such biblical saying probably applies..

For a feel-good movie about the Bee, watch Akeelah and the Bee,starring Keke Palmer, Laurence Fishburne, and Angela Bassett. We’ve watched it a couple of times at our house.

Since they don’t require you to know capitalization, I guess I can maybe believe that…….

GWB on May 30, 2014 at 12:50 PM

It was a great bee. In the middle of the championship round, one of the winners missed his word, which usually means defeat, but the other kid also missed his word, so the competition continued for many more words until they reached the end. Some of the kids were also way more outgoing than you might expect and were quite funny.

The one thing I didn’t like was the ESPN woman that shoved a microphone in each kid’s face right after they were eliminated and asked them what their thought process was when they misspelled that word.

I have to wonder…why would someone who thinks a light-hearted “palate-cleanser” like this thread go and click on it, and take the time to type out a comment explaining how this shouldn’t have been posted because Shinseki resigned today..when Ed has posted on it already.

Does anyone remember the bee from five or six years ago? It was priceless. The word sounded like NUMBNUTS but that wasn’t the word. The boy who was given the word….the utter disbelief on the face was a hoot!

no, it was the scripps spelling bee, the exact same competition that is shown in the videos above, only it was at the state, not national, level. i had to make it first through the local and regional competitions before advancing to state (where i made it to the final round more than once). the next step would have been nationals.

Video: America’s new viral hero, Spelling Bee Kid

We need more “viral” heroes, because Lord knows we don’t have any real ones.

Maybe we can have some of those cute cat versus Jenga vids so we don’t have to sit around worrying about not having jobs or the USDA meat inspectors packing Uzis.

Heh. I imagine most of us have taken the writers to task on one thing or another over the years, but it’s a good idea to check things like that out before acting like a goshawful fool.

On topic here, I’m more impressed when a kid isn’t self-celebratory – it’s too much like an end zone dance thing for my taste.

Get the ESPN video of this thing with the sound off and captions on. It’s surreal.

Also, around 9:45 PM, one of the judges said, something like: She came here to take our jobs, now she’s taking our bee.

Or something like that. To the asian girl.

Really?

That was your teaching joy? Sounds like you resented the smart kid. Not a good quality in a teacher.

I don’t get want why people root for the superior students to stumble.
