Hillary book chapter on Benghazi wonders why people are still talking about Benghazi

posted at 8:01 am on May 30, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

In other words, What difference at this point does it make? Politico gets the first look at the Benghazi chapter in Hillary Clinton’s memoir, Hard Choices, a 34-page regurgitation of Clinton’s attempts for most of the last two years to insist that the debate should remain on improving diplomatic security, rather than the decisions and lack of action that left the consulate undefended and the military unable to respond in the failed state created by US intervention in Libya. Hillary holds up the laughable work of the Accountability Review Board as her vindication, claiming that they could have asked her and her political appointees anything they wanted, but, er … her hand-picked panel just chose not to talk to her. Anyone demanding accountability for the failure and the false narrative pushed by the Obama administration in its aftermath is just interested in partisan politics. And so on.

Clinton’s response on the lack of action during the attack, as described by Politico’s Maggie Haberman, should raise some eyebrows:

Clinton addresses lingering questions about how military assets were deployed to try to rescue personnel at the under-siege compound, writing that Obama “gave the order to do whatever was necessary to support our people in Libya. It was imperative that all possible resources be mobilized immediately. … When Americans are under fire, that is not an order the Commander in Chief has to give twice. Our military does everything humanly possible to save American lives — and would do more if they could. That anyone has ever suggested otherwise is something I will never understand.”

Well, perhaps it’s because no one staged a rescue. Only hours later did an evacuation take place, long after the attack, in order to get CIA personnel and the survivors out of Benghazi. In fact, the State Department and the Department of Defense have insisted that no help was mobilized and ready to respond — even though State and Defense had been warned for months about terrorist networks operating with impunity in Benghazi and eastern Libya since central control had collapsed with the fall of Moammar Qaddafi in 2011. All other Western nations had left Benghazi due to an escalating series of terrorist attacks in the city, and even the Red Cross had left. The American consulate remained open even after being the target of a terrorist bombing earlier that summer. It was the anniversary of 9/11 in the middle of Terrorist Central, and yet State kept turning down security requests, and the DoD wasn’t mobilized for readiness on a day that a child could have guessed that terrorists might strike.

Why?

Speaking of security requests, Clinton uses the ARB as a shield again and says that wasn’t her responsibility:

Clinton also highlights some of the findings of an Accountability Review Board investigation into the attacks, including that there had been security upgrades to the Benghazi compound but that they were “simply inadequate in an increasingly dangerous city.” She notes that Benghazi compound personnel told the Review Board that they felt their requests for additional security were not given adequate weight by the embassy in Tripoli, a point Republicans have in the past argued does not absolve Clinton since those officials report to the Secretary.

Clinton reiterates a point she made during congressional testimony last year: that she never saw cables requesting additional security. The cables were addressed to her as a “procedural quirk” given her position, but didn’t actually land on her desk, she writes: “That’s not how it works. It shouldn’t. And it didn’t.”

Actually, those were the direct responsibility of her lieutenant Patrick Kennedy, whom the ARB also didn’t bother to interview. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who died in the attack, also asked to keep their US military security in place on July 9, so Tripoli wasn’t entirely silent on the issue, as Clinton suggests. Kennedy refused the request, in part because State wanted the military personnel in the area to train Libyan militias rather than get caught up in diplomatic security. While Clinton denies that these issues reached her level, her Defense counterpart Leon Panetta ended up signing off on the order to pull that team away from the consulate.

How could Secretary of State Hillary Clinton not have been part of that decision? And how did Clinton not know about these decisions made by her aide? This is nothing more than a shabby attempt to avoid responsibility for the decisions made under her command at State. It’s the latest in a series of absurd dodges, and one that Clinton no doubt hopes the media will project as definitive so that continuing questions will continue to get the what difference at this point does it make treatment.

Letting an Ambassador die unnecessarily does amount to the only “achievement” at State that Hildabeast can claim as her own.

At some point she’s going to have to start deflecting this at Obama. After all, he was POTUS, and he elected to SLEEP through that 3AM phone call… When she does that, the blue-on-blue carnage that will create will be entertaining to say the least.

And “dereliction of duty” may be charitable since we still don’t know why she had her people stationed on the Group W Bench of terrorism to begin with.

there had been security upgrades to the Benghazi compound but that they were “simply inadequate in an increasingly dangerous city.”

Um….. The British pulled out after their ambassador faced an assassination attempt. The International Red Cross pulled out because of security concerns. The real question that the pig-in-a-pantsuit avoids is the crux of the Benghazi scandal.

1. Why didn’t the US close its consulate in Benghazi?
2. Why were there so many CIA operatives there?
3. Why was Christopher Stevens there?
4. Why did Stevens meet with the Turkish ambassador there?

In short, this scandal isn’t really about what security measures were in place.

That strategy only gets the big media’s sympathy if the woman doing it has a ‘D’ next to her name. Condi Rice would have been given absolutely no quarter if she had done something like this and then demanded a double-standard be in place for holding her accountable; in contrast, if Bill’s tsaught Hillary to fake-cry on demand and she uses it if the going gets tough in her Fox News interview, the rest of the media will savage Greta and Bret for mistreating the lady.

REALLY? Allow me to quote from the recommendations of the 1998 ARB report on the Embassy Bombings which is posted right at the State Dept website:

4. The Secretary of State should personally review the security situation of embassy chanceries and other official premises, closing those which are highly vulnerable and threatened but for which adequate security enhancements cannot be provided, and seek new secure premises for permanent use, or temporary occupancy, pending construction of new buildings.

Why do people still talk about Pickett’s Charge? It was an historic blunder that needlessly got people killed in a futile effort. It also marked the end of the realistic hope for Southern independence. In that case, Lee took the blame yet it still is in popular interest. In Benghazi which marked the end to the notion that the Arab Spring was a successful and easy process to Middle Eastern tranquility, it also got people killed in a futile effort to pretend there was a peaceful successful transition there. In this case no one takes the blame yet the media and the participants in the administration say the case is closed. It isn’t.

Why are the Dem’s so worried about the Benghazi investigation if everything has been disclosed and there is nothing more that will be found out?

Tater Salad on May 30, 2014 at 10:22 AM

Unanswered questions:

1) Why was the State Department unwilling to provide the requested level of security to Benghazi in the summer of 2012?

2) Do President Obama’s daily intelligence briefings in the run-up to September 11, 2012, support the assertion that there was no credible threat of a coordinated terrorist attack on Benghazi during the time? And do the daily intelligence briefings following that date support the claim the administration made that the cause was an Internet video? And why hasn’t the White House declassified and released those briefings, just like President George W. Bush did with his pre-September 11, 2001 briefings?

3) Why did we not anticipate the need to have military assets at the ready in the region on the anniversary of September 11, of all days?

4) Did President Obama sleep the night of September 11, 2012? Did Secretary Clinton? Neither has answered that very simple question — were they awake or asleep while Americans were under fire? When was President Obama told about the murder of our Ambassador?

5) If the Secretary of Defense thought there was “no question that this was a coordinated attack,” why did Ambassador Susan Rice, Secretary Clinton and President Obama all tell the American people that the cause was a spontaneous demonstration about an Internet video?

6) Why did former deputy CIA Director Mike Morrell edit the intelligence community talking points to delete the references to Islamic extremists and Al Qaeda?

7) Why did the FBI not release pictures of the militants taken the day of the attack until eight months after the fact? Why not immediately, as proved so effective in the Boston bombing?

8) Why was Secretary Clinton not interviewed for the A.R.B. [Accountability Review Board] report? And if all the relevant questions were answered in the A.R.B. report… why did the State Department’s own Inspector General office open a probe into the methods of that very report?

9) Why have none of the terrorists who attacked in Benghazi been captured or killed?

10) What additional evidence that the White House engaged in a partisan political campaign to blame the Benghazi attack on the Internet video is contained in the additional emails requested by Judicial Watch but withheld by the White House on the grounds that it would put a “chill on internal deliberations?”

nazo311 on May 30, 2014 at 10:30 AM

This is straight from the old Clinton war room. No mention or explanation of her coverup story about the video. This will not help her in a presidential run because the truth matters to a strong leader and a phrase like “What difference at this point does it make” is not the statement of a leader. She certainly can’t run the 3:00 a.m. phone call ad if she runs.

Clinton continues: “I will not be a part of a political slugfest on the backs of dead Americans. It’s just plain wrong, and it’s unworthy of our great country. Those who insist on politicizing the tragedy will have to do so without me.”

I guess we know what the talking points are when she refuses to testify again.

lea on May 30, 2014 at 10:44 AM

if we had pulled out of benghazi it would have been a signal to the terrorists (and to the rest of the world) that the terrorists had won. is that what we want to be doing? letting the terrorists think they have won?

ThisIsYourBrainDamaged on May 30, 2014 at 8:37 AM
So let me get this straight. We allow the terrorists to kill four and wound untold many others. We then evacuate Libya with our tails between our legs.

Did we win?

Closet Optimist on May 30, 2014 at 10:17 AM

The first responders arrived 22 hours after the attack began. Chris Stevens’ body was missing for 11 hours. Even if the administration’s only strategy was evacuation, couldn’t it at least have allowed evacuation efforts to begin just a tad sooner?

DISCREPANCIES IN OFFICIAL DOD TIMELINE

The facts:

The official Defense Department timeline and the independent Accountability Review Board state that the European Commander in Extremis Force that AFRICOM commander Gen. Carter Ham ordered to Sigonella from a training mission in Europe arrived at 7:57 p.m. on Sept. 12 (nearly 22 hours after the attack began). Fox News has reported it was training in nearby Croatia, a short flight away.

Fox News has learned that a 12-member alert force from the CIF team who were staged to Sigonella from Croatia arrived at the staging base in southern Italy within several hours of being alerted of the attack — but they were not given permission to move into Libya.

Fox News has also learned that the team of Tier One special operators who took off from the United States landed in Sigonella air base in southern Italy at about 7:30 a.m. local time – an hour before Stevens’ body was retrieved.

And yet the official Defense Department timeline says that this National Mission Force team did not arrive in Sigonella until 9:28 p.m. Libyan time on Sept. 12 (nearly 24 hours after the attack began).

The question:

Why the discrepancy in the official Defense Department timeline and the time that those special operators say they landed in Sigonella from the United States?

“FAST MOVERS” WERE PROMISED

The facts:

The quick reaction force that was mobilized from the Libyan capital was made up of five Americans — including Glen Doherty, who was on contract with the CIA’s Global Response Staff (or GRS), and two Delta Force special operators who were in Libya on a separate assignment. That was all the hastily rented plane could hold, according to the State Department Review Board. Stevens used the cellphone of Regional Security Officer 1, who is currently recovering at Walter Reed. Stevens was speaking with the Embassy in Tripoli at 9:50 p.m. from the safe room where he and RSO1 had retreated for safety.

When the reaction team left Tripoli for Benghazi several hours after the attack began, they were told by one of the senior U.S. security officials at the Embassy that there would be “fast movers above Benghazi” when they arrived. “Fast movers” is a reference to military jets used to fly over a combat situation. It was a reference to F-18s, F-15s or F-16s that would have been flown in from Europe.

The team that left for Benghazi assumed they would have air cover when they landed. Instead, they got held up at the Benghazi airport without transportation and did not arrive at the CIA Annex to help with the evacuation until 5 a.m. local time on Sept. 12 (more than seven hours after the attack had begun.) Air support never came.

Doherty, a former Navy SEAL, was a part of that team and was killed by a mortar while he and Tyrone Woods manned defensive positions on the roof. Woods did not die immediately from the mortar attack. He bled out over several hours, according to one eyewitness who was there that night.

Fox News has also learned that some of Stevens’ in-country security detail did not accompany him to Benghazi on Sept 11.

The questions:

Why was the “fast movers” team never sent from Italy?

Why did highly trained members of the diplomatic security service remain behind in Tripoli, and why did Stevens take only a skeletal security team to Benghazi?

The Board found that Stevens made the decision to travel to Benghazi independently of Washington. His plans “were not shared thoroughly with the Embassy’s country team, who were not fully aware of planned movements off the compound,” according to independent investigators. Why the secrecy?

WHAT WAS THE CIA DOING IN BENGHAZI?

obladioblada on May 30, 2014 at 11:02 AM

In what appears to be a good will gesture to all those who perished in Benghazi, and to provide proof that safety & security is her number one priority going forward, Hillary’s publisher has delightfully noted the book, Hard Choices, is flame retardant.

StubbornGreenBurros on May 30, 2014 at 11:03 AM

Hillary is the prototypical Progressive, Liberal, self-serving, Non-representative Elitist.

She declared she and she alone was the only one qualified to handle some proverbial 3am phone call regarding a national security-threatening issue….When such a phone call came, neither she nor President Obama could be found – Americans STILL don’t know where they were.
– ‘What does it matter?’

Possibly her biggest responsibility as Secretary of State was to ensure American Embassies abroad were adequately defended and America’s Ambassadors abroad were protected….on 9/11/12, the anniversary of 9/11/01, aproximately 20 U.S. Embassies throughout the Middle East were attacked as part of a well-coordinated Middle East-wide attack on American Embassies as part of a ’9/11 anniversary’ attack. Four (4) Embassies were overrun, and, in Benghazi, 4 Americans were killed – to include the 1st American Ambassador to be murdered in over 30 years. Hillary Clinton COMPLETELY FAILED at her PRIMARY MISSION, resulting in the deaths of 4 Americans, 1 being a US Ambassador.
– ‘What does it matter?’

Her own actions continue to demonstrate NO REGRET for failing to DO HER JOB and NO REMORSE for 4 DEAD AMERICANS – to include Ambassador Stevens. Her actions continue to demonstrate she is in full ‘damage control/ mode in order to protect her potential 2016 Presidential candidacy.

Having hired an Al Qaida-associated Militia to begin with to ‘protect and defend’ Ambassador Stevens and the other Americans at the Benghazi compound demostrated an irresponsible, ignorant, and even criminally STUPIDITY, an inability to make good decisions. Her actions are a clear indication that Hillary can NOT be entrusted with the safety and security of this NATION when she has proven she can’t even be trusted to protect Americans in a compound.

Her State Department having ordered the US Marines guarding the Cairo, Egypt Embassy NOT to carry live ammo on 9/11/12 – the day before the anniversary of 9/11 – directly contributed to that Embassy being overrun and the State Department’s FAILURE to protect American lives. Again, her and her Department’s actions demonstrate a definite record of poor decision-making and the inability to protect American lives or territory.

The News media reported that when the Clinton’s left the White House after Bill Clinton’s time in office that the Clintons left the White House taking all kinds of china, art, etc that belonged to the PEOPLE’S White House, things that were supposed to remain in the White House. Perhaps Hillary is thinking about picking up new china, art, etc, which is why she wants to go back to the White House. Perhaps she like all Liberal Elitists / power-hungry politicians, simply wants to be the new ‘Queen’ (rather than ‘TOP Servant of the People’). Based on her RECORD, her actions, and her continued defiance in defending proven lies to protect her potential election (something she honestly believes is DUE her), she has no business being in the WH again, unless it is to take the Tour of the WH…which Obama has cancelled.

Typical Dem/Leftist deflection and projection: Hillary accuses her Benghazi critics of “flat-out deceit.”

Hanging upside down?

Her excuses, lies and deflections about Benghazi in her book are a dog whistle to her media mutts and a blueprint for the narrative she expects them to use in covering for her.

If this BS is all she’s got, I wonder if it’s enough. The media will have a difficult time ignoring the Select Committee, and Gowdy will give them few opportunities to portray its work as a partisan witch hunt. A substantial majority of the American people want the facts, all the facts, exposed.

The facts will condemn her and the most contemptible excuse for a Commander In Chief ever to disgrace the presidency.

novaculus on May 30, 2014 at 12:35 PM

And all of this because the DoD wanted to have control over the consulate’s security forces, rather than leave them in the chain of command of State where they would not have to worry about going to jail for doing their job. So Stevens et al get stuck with some ramshackle band of outsourced security with nowhere near sufficient firepower to repel an attack of this kind, a situation for which, miraculously, absolutely no one apparently is to blame.

Thanks, bureaucracy.

This is not the chapter to propel her to electoral victory but it does allow her to defer any journalistic or congressional questions to go read her book, where she explains the whole Benghazi case … ad nauseam.

Speaking of which, the nauseating Hillary had better take care she has not made material mis-statements in this Apologia.
