Mark Pryor: I don’t think Shinseki should go because … I’m not convinced this problem is big enough yet; Update: Shinseki must stay — because confirmation hearings would be tough?

posted at 4:01 pm on May 29, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via the Standard, I need to correct the record. Yesterday I predicted that Pryor would join the mob of red-state Democrats frantically pushing Shinseki under the bus to protect themselves. I wrongly assumed that leaving 1,700 vets in Phoenix to twist in the wind on a secret wait list — a scheduling problem the IG explicitly said was “systemic” — would qualify as a firing offense, especially considering Shinseki had five years to right this ship. Not to Pryor, apparently. He needs to see more before his conscience is sufficiently troubled to pull the plug.

I regret the error.

Seriously, am I reading this wrong?

Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor says he’s outraged by treatment delays for military veterans — but isn’t ready to call for Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to step down over the issue.

The two-term lawmaker from Arkansas told reporters Thursday that he wants more information on how widespread the systemic problems that an inspector general’s report revealed about the VA. Pryor said he also wants to know whether similar problems exist at Arkansas’ veterans’ facilities.

He’s outraged, but … not quite outraged enough to give someone else a shot at reforming this Kafkaesque bureaucracy before other veterans die while waiting for treatment. This is the same guy who accused Tom Cotton of having a sense of political “entitlement” because he served in Iraq. (It’s an amazing show of balls by Pryor, who owes his own Senate seat to his father’s high name recognition in Arkansas, to accuse anyone else of entitlement.) Old CW in Arkansas: Is Mark Pryor too liberal for a red state? New CW in Arkansas: Does Mark Pryor have brain damage?

The weirdest part of this is that Shinseki is almost certainly headed for removal. Watch, for example, as Jay Carney dances around repeated questions about whether Obama still has confidence in the VA chief. Unless the IG shocks the world by issuing a follow-up report that says problems at the VA aren’t systemic after all, Shinseki’s on borrowed time. Why wouldn’t Pryor want to get out in front of it by abandoning ship now?

Update: Via new Hot Air editor Noah Rothman, here’s former White House deputy spokesman Bill Burton arguing against getting rid of Shinseki because the GOP would have a field day with confirmation hearings for a new VA chief. In other words, Obama’s political comfort level is more important than firing inept bureaucrats. That’s how “urgent” this crisis is. Skip to the end for the key bit.

By the way, the number of Senate Democrats who have jumped ship now stands at 11.

Maybe Pryor doesn’t want to give the voters a precedent that failure should be grounds for firing lest they send him packing.

the problem wasnt shinsenski. it was low level employees. but they werent union members either. blaming this on unions is also wrong. they were management. kinda in the mid levels. they should be delt with but shinsenski should not be fired. obama will not do this because hes a good leader whom doesnt bow to public pressure when it is wrong. he is loyal to his people and will not abandon them.

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on May 29, 2014 at 4:07 PM

Well, Shinseki said he’s gonna start paying better attention, so, this will all blow over as soon as he gets that up and running.

Akzed on May 29, 2014 at 4:08 PM

I believe the problem IS “big enough” already and has been for a while now but I also think most of us citizens should recognize that the Left creates and needs players to blame to avoid blaming the ones actually responsible.

Forcing Shinseki to resign — and he should but so far hasn’t on his own initiative — suggests, like Sebelius as to the Obamacare disaster, will just provide Obama with another deflection from responsibility.

DoD/VA employees are union now? Who knew.

And blaming it on the lower level employees isn’t going to work. They are doing what they are told. Mid to higher level are the ones who need to be checked as well as those at the top. Where did the directive to do this come from? And who is responsible… per years. That is the questions you should be asking.

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on May 29, 2014 at 4:07 PM

I disagree. The union presence is directly responsible for a great deal of “culture” influence on every organization they participate in. Making it immediately possible to fire union employees would be a good place to begin to solve the VA mess.

Also, immediate accountability otherwise, especially financially, which unions are also involved in, unfortunately, as to the VA.

As Commander in Chief, the first people he should consider “his people” are the veterans that got screwed by this systemic disaster that Candidate Obama in fact ran against.

That you think he should have higher loyalties to handpicked bureaucrats than our soldiers is a pretty good indication that whatever your brain is on, you need an intervention and a detox.

But about Shinseki, he’s been a useful tool for the Dems:

http://libertyunyielding.com/2014/05/16/44670/

You stand relieved of all duties…

As most veterans and students of history will attest, any combat leader who countenances needless deaths under his watch can and usually does find himself relieved of all duties. Secretary Shinseki himself has a history while in uniform of ensuring careers were brought to unceremonious endings.

Case in point: Four officers and five enlisted men of the Army’s famed 82d Airborne Division ordered to peacekeeping duty to Kosovo in Sept. 1999 found their careers crashing down around them on the express orders of the Army Chief of Staff, General Eric Shinseki. As reported by The Washington Times and The New York Times in 2000, Shinseki “accused the soldiers’ commanders in Kosovo of displaying a ‘propensity toward Serb favoritism’ and an overly hostile attitude toward Kosovo’s Albanians.”

It concluded that they either knew or should have known about complaints that soldiers were using excessive force and mistreating women by groping their breasts and buttocks during searches.

Specifically, even though the paratroopers received no law enforcement training prior to deploying from their Ft. Bragg, NC home base, “on Sept. 8 [of 2000] the Chief of Staff, Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, had ordered a new review of training, leadership and readiness of the division to address the investigation’s findings. He ordered the commander of the Army’s Forces Command, Gen. John W. Hendrix, ‘to take corrective actions as appropriate’ within 30 days.”

The Army’s lead investigator, Col. John W. Morgan III, hammered the Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Michael D. Ellerbe, when he concluded the soldiers “experienced difficulties tempering their combat mentality’ and adapting to the sort of low-level violence and intimidation found between Kosovo’s Serbs and Albanians” as well as “for failing to take seriously numerous reports that his men were mistreating civilians.”

History teaches…

Actually, the VA should be abolished, like a host of other inefficient, high-cost low-quality government bureaucracies. It should simply be a taxpayer funded – because veterans earned it – way for veterans to get their own private insurance, see their own private doctors, and control their own healthcare choices in whatever way they see fit.

You know, like the rest of us used to be able to do – but with a voucher or discount or something that helps cover if not completely cover the cost as a ‘thank you’ for their service.

Take my suggestion and direct your hostility where it matters.

For whatever is making you feel so miserable, I hope you feel better or do something otherwise that contributes something good to someone, including yourself. You need it.

Not convinced yet Mark Pryor? How many veterans have to die from the neglect we have seen for you to…..see enough. jeebuz. Vote this kook out.

jake49 on May 29, 2014 at 4:48 PM

The real problem is Ann Romney having a horse.

And a Mormon one, too.

cbenoistd on May 29, 2014 at 4:49 PM

Anybody noticed how the body count for this administration is beginning to really climb? They are leaving a trail of real bodies out their for all to see. What’s it going to take for people to finally say they’ve had enough of these miscreants?

Who is hostile? I am laughing at you. It makes me smile to see you freaking out.

Ahh you do realize that veterans are citizen warriors? No one makes them sign up for the military. And you do realize they ALSO pay taxes. Right?

upinak on May 29, 2014 at 4:45 PM

Are you done speaking for other people yet? It doesn’t look like you are, not from what I’m continuing to read from your freakout here.

Go get some exercise. You’ll feel better. You have no idea of what my circumstances are as to veterans and I intend to keep it that way.

Lourdes on May 29, 2014 at 4:50 PM

their = there….sheesh

HomeoftheBrave on May 29, 2014 at 4:51 PM

Now that “upinak” has thrown up all over the site…

Lourdes on May 29, 2014 at 4:51 PM

Hey Lourdes, drop the “freakout” and find a mirror.

Schadenfreude on May 29, 2014 at 4:51 PM

If Pryor were a Republican, some Democrat would ask him how many vets have to die before it’s serious enough for him.

It is. Quit playing games.

Schadenfreude on May 29, 2014 at 4:54 PM

No dead veterans from Arkansas?

Maybe it will be a problem for Pryor if they get a dozen Arkansans on the list of avoidable deaths due to VA malfeasance.

Until them…

Lourdes on May 29, 2014 at 4:50 PM

Lourdes, from what you have stated, you have no circumstances with veterans. Other than who is on here, I doubt you know many, if any. With that said, I really don’t care about your personal life. It doesn’t interest me, and I sure it wouldn’t interest many on HotAir.

I am telling you how it works in the VA. If you do not want to believe it, that is fine. Maybe you should take a break; walk away from your computer. Don’t give crap, when you really are not doing anything but giving misinformation.

upinak on May 29, 2014 at 4:55 PM

I was fixing to say. In a sane world Pryor easily gets the boot. However, a quick review of headlines here and at Drudge reminds me we aren’t in a sane world anymore.

Bmore on May 29, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Bmore, how’s the status of your state?

Behold the National Azzwipe from Arkansas.

Yeah, he’s a RAZORBACK alright.
