Video: Obama leads America to glorious victory over straw men at West Point

posted at 2:01 pm on May 28, 2014 by Allahpundit

There are those who believe military action is always the answer and there are those who believe military action is never the answer, but the president — wait a minute. No one believes either of those things! All right, granted, maybe John McCain does, but who else’s foreign-policy views can fairly be reduced to one of those two positions? Even Ron Paul voted to invade Afghanistan. You know how it goes, though, with the Adult-in-the-Room-in-Chief: His position, by definition, is the sensible, pragmatic one, and therefore his critics on either side are necessarily out on the fringe. Ben Shapiro translates:

So shopworn has this gimmick become that it’s now practically a drinking game on Twitter during O’s speeches to spot the straw men as they arrive. I do think there’s a strategic component to it, though, not just some knee-jerk impulse on Obama’s part to reassure the world that he’s Mr. Reasonable. It’s not quite true that McCain supports military intervention everywhere, but given his high media profile and his eternal belief that the U.S. should be doing more abroad, no matter how much the U.S. is already doing, I think he’s become a useful proxy for that position to the White House. McCain is, after all, the closest thing the GOP currently has to a spokesman for George W. Bush’s foreign policy (I think he’s even more gung ho about interventionism than Dubya was, but never mind that) and running against Bush’s foreign policy has always paid off for Obama. As one person on Twitter said, read today’s speech and you’ll see that chunks of it seem to be aimed directly at McCain — which is to say, aimed directly at Bush. The same was true the last time he spoke up in defense of his foreign policy, slightly less than a month ago. Setting up that contrast, passivity abroad or another Iraq war, is good for O.

Is the contrast between Maverick and Obama really as sharp as he’d like us to think, though? Some Special Ops troops wonder.

America’s toughest fighters, members of the elite Special Operations Forces, are watching with growing concern as the social-media hashtag #bringbackourgirls becomes an international campaign…

According to two well-placed defense department sources, senior Special Operations commanders — those in charge of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force and the Ranger Regiment — have told their men to be ready, assuming that eventually “the hashtag will bring us out.”

“We’re being tweeted into combat,” said a military official who spoke to NBC News but asked not to be identified.

Obama’s already sent military “advisors” to Nigeria to help find the girls, and said explicitly in today’s speech that there is room for military action in situations “that stir our conscience” but don’t directly threaten the United States. In those cases, he said, whatever America does must be multilateral; McCain would disagree on that narrow point, but on the larger point that intervention is warranted, they’re simpatico. But then, if you remember Libya and the Syria debacle last fall, you already knew that.

Nothing new. They were ribbitted into combat in Libya by the frogs, where we saw pick-up trucks taken out in order to enforce a no-fly zone … After all, what use is the American military if it is not to operate on the whim, and at the behest, of the French, Barky’s bestest America-hating buddies among the evil whities?

The Obama Doctrine is about the world’s golf courses and hobnobbing with foreign royalty. He has no driving belief or principle upon which to built a coherent, meaningful American policy except to generally make sure America stays in her “proper place” as O sees it.

spot the strawmen

Somehow the AP, New York Times, NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNN are unable to ever see a strawman when Obama trots them out. President Obama’s words are presented as perfectly reasonable assertions that no rational person could disagree with.

After all when the choice is between a) destroy planet earth and everything on it, or b) create a better tomorrow for our children, there can be no middle ground.

Bitter Clinger on May 28, 2014 at 2:43 PM

Obama’s repeated erection of straw men and regular vilification of critics as bad people with bad (racist!) motives is not merely intellectual dishonesty. It is symptomatic of his intellectual shortcomings and his defects of character.

He is ignorant of history and his commitment to the unrealistic and destructive Leftist template of the world approaches the delusional. He is personally incapable of recognizing his shortcomings, let alone accept criticism, no matter how well intended.

We have two more years of his whining and blundering and frankly intentional sabotage of our interests, at home and abroad.

Stanley, Inc. was acquired by the CGI Group in 2010.

The knock on Obama’s lack of toughness is that he keeps talking tough in situations and backing down everytime his bluff is called or getting steamrolled in negotiations. Also his inexplicible unilateral concessions and betraying of allies. This all projects weakness and that’s what has emboldened our enemies to take the actions they have. Obama’s projection of weakness has created the current situation – in Syria, in the Ukraine, in Iran, in Africa, etc. etc. I gues we call that “smart power”.

I liked Quayle, even admired him, in a way. True, when he started a sentence, you never knew if he was going to make it to the end in one piece, a little like watching a toddler taking his first steps and hoping he doesn’t fall flat on his face. But there are more important things than being able to speak eloquently off the top of your head. He did speak forcefully from a place inside himself, of conviction and belief.

So far I’ve not heard a single instance where King Putt’s speeches are rated. There is a reason of course as it would be deemed racist in this day and age.

Missilengr on May 28, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Basically our foreign policy is messed up because our two political parties have staked out positions that have goals that are not achievable.

If your American foreign policy ignores these five realities then your foreign policy will fail:

(1) Your not going to gain peace in the Middle East between Israel and their Islamic neighbors. Israel’s Islamic neighbors will never accept it for long because Jews are not Muslims. This also true for long term stability in the Islamic world. It is always going to be a violent and unstable place due to Islam, unless Muslims reform their own religion, or people quit Islam.

(2) The best government you can hope for in Muslim majority countries is some kind of government controlled by the military in which that military is the protector of a secular government. The next best is a strongman that promotes ethnic identity over a religious one. You are not going to get anything like a constitutional republic based off secular laws, and more than likely any move to democracy in the Islamic world will lead to Islamist rule.

(3) You cannot fight wars that last more than five years in America without seriously hurting the political party that started the war, or that political party that is for continuing the war. The war can be as bloody as it needs to be, even lots of American blood, but it must end within that five year period. So whatever your objective is, it must be obtainable within that window. Call it the General George C. Marshall rule. Despite the stereotype, Americans can handle bloody wars, just not long ones.

(4) Whatever foreign policy objectives you have anywhere on this planet, it MUST take into account China and Russia. You must envision how they will take advantage of that policy, and determine will it weaken, or strengthen, our ability to deal with a military challenge by Russia or China? In the Cold War, every U.S. decision was taken with how this would impact our ability to deal with the Soviet menace.

(5) You cannot separate foreign policy and domestic politics. Your political party must see how the opposing party will use it to their advantage. You cannot direct foreign policy if you are not elected to political office.

Both the Bush and Obama administrations failed all five.

The DimocRat left in this country, their lapdogs in Congress, and the Leftist Media will not allow America to ever actually WIN a war ever again.

They have actively, deliberately tied the hands of our Military in every “war” or conflict since WWII. Everyone said we will never again allow another Vietnam. Which was lost by bureaucratic DimocRats.

Yet what has this DimocRat “President” done just in the last 6 years?
Iraq War – WIN LOSS (Obama took a win and turned it into a very BIG loss)
Afghanistan – We were winning this in the beginning, before the bureaucrats struck again, and tied the hands of our military so that a LOSS was the only possible outcome.

As long as America is run by (D) and metro-sexual, beta-male (R)’s, we will never actually WIN another war.

The cadets all SALUTED their ‘Commander and Chief’…who refused to return the salute and offered his hand for them to shake instead. Way to completely show disdain and disrespect for our military…on top of all the dead veterans thanks to ‘Death Panels’ and their Secret Waiting Lists!

Obviously, Benghazi was a case where our conscience was not stirred!

The scarecrow resorts easily to straw-men, doesn’t he?

In the first 60 seconds of that video clip he said “I” 9 times…

The same could be said about all of his speeches.
Even while speaking of the departed, he is still his main focus.
Pathetic.

I had the distinct displeasure of seeing Obama deliver this speech live, in-person today. Believe me, the reception was every bit as icy as the reports suggest.

This was very much the wrong speech for this audience, based on the text. (I had to read it, in sections, over several hours, in order not to heave.) It’s all focused on the speaker, rambled, and implied the graduates had spent all this effort to be a second string training group.

At least almost all the graduates will never have to do something this socially hard again.

And I suppose such an icy reception could make one almost feel sorry for the guy. As a person, not the narcissistic neo-communist self-proclaimed messiah who has done so much damage to the country. Almost.

I’ve been a bit conflicted with Presidents who weren’t military. On the one hand, the President of the United States IS the commander in chief, so therefore should salute even if he had never been in the military before. On the other hand, do I (retired military and son of military) really want that particular non-prior-serviceman to sully the honorable salute?
