Poll: Large majority disapproves of Karl Rove asking questions about Hillary’s age and health

posted at 6:41 pm on May 28, 2014 by Allahpundit

I don’t get it. Why would the public side with Hillary Clinton over a guy who’s been infamous for years as a notoriously Machiavellian political operator, whom half of his own party now despises, and whose claim to fame from the last presidential race 2012 was spending gigantic sums on a losing strategy and then wrongly questioning the results in Ohio on election night?

Just think, if we’re very lucky, he’ll be back in the White House soon under President Jeb.

party

Even a plurality of Republicans disapproves of him questioning Hillary’s age and health. The numbers by gender are what you’d expect they are, too:

gen

Hillary will, of course, cry sexism when questions about her health are asked during the campaign, notwithstanding the fact that those questions are always asked of older male candidates. Looks from these numbers like she might find a receptive audience, which will only make it harder for the GOP to close the gender gap.

Two obvious questions from all this. One: Is the public disapproval here chiefly a reaction to the subject matter or a reaction to Rove? It’s important to figure that out, obviously, if the GOP intends to press ahead with this line attack. We can replace the messenger while keeping the message — or can we? With Rove having assumed such a prominent role in pushing this argument so early in the election cycle, every subsequent iteration of it is going to be framed by lefties as being part of “the Rove strategy.” He’s put his brand on the age/health debate. Two: Does any of what I just said really matter to whether the age/health questions will help or hurt Hillary? The fact that people “disapprove” of Rove attacking her this way doesn’t mean they won’t still think about it when they go to vote. On the contrary, voters in past elections have freely admitted to pollsters that an older candidate’s age is a liability. Rove couldn’t care less, I suspect, whether Americans are annoyed at him for taking the lead on this; his goal was to raise public awareness about Hillary’s age and health and he’s achieved that. Voters’ natural inclinations to view older candidates more dimly through that lens will do the rest.

Stop with these phony polls that do nothing but stop us from attacking the weak spots of the left. Will we never learn? Must we be defeated by fear of phony polls for ever. Stop! Stop! We fall into this trap EVERY TIME!!!!

jainphx on May 28, 2014 at 8:25 PM

well, according to this push poll, hill has this election wrapped up anyway /s

there’ll be 1000s of push polls done, HA has already covered several of them as ‘news’…please there are actual issues that need to be covered.

Heh.

Cleombrotus on May 28, 2014 at 8:29 PM

Meh. Nearly to a man, voters will poll as against negative campaign ads, yet they work. This is meaningless. We should and must go after Hillary on her age, wealth, white privilege, and her poor health and alcoholism.

slickwillie2001 on May 28, 2014 at 7:52 PM

Yep. Negative campaigning gets high disapproval numbers.

Never stopped Obama, Biden, Axelrod, Plouffe, Pelosi, Reid.
Why should it stop Rove?

lynncgb on May 28, 2014 at 8:29 PM

Face facts. Hillary will have be the next POTUS.

I hate Rove almost as much as Hildebeast.

But the fact is, if she can’t handle the opposition questioning her every wrinkle, crevice or crack, she shouldn’t even be THINKING about running for President.

I have no problem with Rove or anyone else, questioning her age, health or whatever. After all, the Leftist Media did the exact same thing, and WORSE to Reagan back in the day.

Their outrage is completely faux and is nothing but their next salvo in the “war on women” meme, and their first in the “war on Hildebeast” meme. It’s all manufactured.

But of course the low-info voters don’t know, and don’t care. As usual.

Meople on May 28, 2014 at 8:32 PM

The Washington Post and ABC certainly don’t like anyone doubting their Queen Killary’s immortality.

viking01 on May 28, 2014 at 8:32 PM

That should keep any sane person from pulling the lever for her.
bimmcorp on May 28, 2014 at 7:39 PM

Cleombrotus on May 28, 2014 at 8:34 PM

The louder they squawk, the closer you are to the target. Clearly they fear the narrative being set of Hillary! being too old and too unhealthy. Of course, it doesn’t help that her butt ugly mug reinforces the meme.

dreadnought62 on May 28, 2014 at 8:36 PM

Don’t believe liberal polls!!!

Of course: CNN caught red-handed sabotaging a gun control poll

CNN apparently wants people to believe that there is an overwhelming support for gun control by any means necessary. They put up a poll about American gun control, and only put it in their international section where they know the results will be skewed. Pathetic.

Bitter Clinger on May 28, 2014 at 7:32 PM

This.

TarheelBen on May 28, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Stupid push polls. An honest poll would ask if the respondent was concerned about Clinton’s many documented health issues and leave partisan figures like Rove out of it.

When they asked about Romney’s various issues did they mention the Dem who brought it up to the MSM?

Missy on May 28, 2014 at 8:42 PM

The medical records she will have to release will be so whitewashed they will be blinding.

MaxBC on May 28, 2014 at 7:59 PM

Why do you think Hillary will release anything?

Obama didn’t, and the media didn’t say a word.

All Obama released was a paragraph written by a doctor saying that he’d examined Obama and that he was in good health.

Bill Clinton never released his medical records either.

TarheelBen on May 28, 2014 at 8:45 PM

Completely agree with analysis. His goal is to plant the seeds of doubt like his previous comments on her head injury. There is no downside I can see because he is a lone actor except maybe there could be a connection to Jeb.

The Commentator on May 28, 2014 at 8:52 PM

Americans despise Tokyo Rove more than anybody on the face of the earth. If the gopE had half a brain they would get this dinosaur off
the stage.

Jayrae on May 28, 2014 at 8:58 PM

The true Machiavellian political operator would say something about Hillary’s health now just to make sure it’s in the public conversation and then shut up, knowing that people aren’t going to carry the anger for 29 months, with everything else that’s going to happen between now and Election Day.

But they will take that into account if, instead of remembering her age situation on their own (especially if she does have a medical issue between now and 11/8/16), you keep nudging them about it on Fox News and elsewhere for the next 29 months. We’ll see if Rove did this just to know the issue’s in play, or if he plans to harp on about it and make sure the media has a way to drum up sympathy votes for Mrs. Clinton.

jon1979 on May 28, 2014 at 7:07 PM

Agreed. The seed is planted now shut up about it. She doesn’t look healthy to me and running for office is hard on a person. If something happens people will remember.

Rove I dislike but in this case couldn’t have had a better person to bring it up. He gets the media to report it because he’s so disliked.

wifarmboy on May 28, 2014 at 9:14 PM

Bill Clinton never released his medical records either.

Tard on May 28, 2014 at 9:45 PM

People other than political junkies don’t even know who Rove is. They disapprove of the coverage because they see Hillary as a “strong woman” being victimized by “unfair questions.” Variations on this theme will be played constantly over the next few years, ensuring that any criticism of HRC is widely viewed as inappropriate.

And yes, Hillary will be president in 2017. Bank on it.

Who are they polling the democrats and rinos in Congress?

I say vilify Hillary often. She is another suspect politician that deserves to be retired. After Benghazi, she has no business even thinking about being Commander in Chief.

woodhull on May 29, 2014 at 8:57 AM

Of course we do not want a egomaniac mass killer that wants only to stake out his place in history with Hitler, Stalin and other like thinkers, we already have one and still only have his word that he did not renounce his citizenship in Indonisa. Then on the other hand I do not want to be the one that would try to come up with the criteria to judge these future office holders. There is the problem and the fallacy in the polls. Carl Rowe is not saying that Hillery is unfit for office. He is saying that “We The People” have no way to judge the candidates qualifications. We can only take their word for their qualification and competency. In fact “We The People” are not even allowed to vote for the President of The United States. This is the only position in our government where that occurs. We have more controls over the position of “Animal Control Officer” then we have for the President.

Keep this in mind.

jpcpt03 on May 29, 2014 at 9:14 AM

Maybe SP should be bringing this stuff up in a sly, catty way, just like the girls do in the locker rooms. We gotta make fun of Killary and make her seem like a silly candidate instead of a serious one. Rove comes across as the husband who can’t come up with the right answer when the wife asks does this dress make my butt look big. We should be concerned over her health issues but more so over her selling us out to the Chicoms for her cheater of a husband.

Kissmygrits on May 29, 2014 at 9:29 AM

I agree with Bimmcorp and ToddPA! Well said!

AnnaS on May 29, 2014 at 9:37 AM

Wigglesworth????? Why are they crazy on the ones who won???. They are pro life, pro business low tax??? Is that what makes people crazy?

garydt on May 29, 2014 at 9:55 AM

Let me just say that if she croaks during the campaign, wait for the LSM to use the word “unexpectedly”.

itsspideyman on May 29, 2014 at 10:09 AM

The problem is with the person asking the question, not necessarily the question.

If Hillary had a “senior moment” before the cameras, the issue would be front and center.

Bart DePalma on May 29, 2014 at 11:37 AM

Look on the bright side: maybe she’ll take a dirt nap before 2016.

PD Quig on May 29, 2014 at 12:59 PM

Circle the wagons.

Prediction; Hillary will be elected in a landslide because women, specifically low info female voters will pull her lever en mas.

After the first term she will bow out because she’ll be proven to be the second worst president in history and her skin is much thinner than the current white house occupant.

For the record — Rove was smart to plant this seed of doubt. Good politics.

FireBlogger on May 29, 2014 at 1:16 PM

I assume the Republicans they asked were Joe Scarborough, McCain’s fat daughter from MSNBC and Books of CNN and of the NYT. But then why would I think the poll was a typical push poll coming from the left wing news like ABC and The Washington Post. I would rather trust Snowden before them.

pwb on May 29, 2014 at 2:25 PM

Yes, 100% of Liberals, Democrats, and ignorant / lazy Americans living off tax-payer-funded social programs think Hillary’s mental or physical state should be competely ignored….

Just like we were told…
- the fact Obama was admittedly tutored by prominent Communist Frank Marshall Davis could not / should not be brought up
- the fact that Obama admittedly studied Socialist Saul Alinsky and even quoted his book ‘Rules For Radicals’ during inauguration speeches could not / should not be brought up
- the fact that Obama was admittedly mentored by racist, hate-spewing, Anti-American ‘pastor’ Jeremiah-Wright could not / should not be brought up

Anything that could negatively impact a Liberal’s chances to win political office should not and must not be allowed to be disussed…

easyt65 on May 29, 2014 at 3:14 PM

No one with a brain takes polls seriously; they keep querying the same useful idiots who haven’t a clue as to the subject about which they’re queried, for you can spin the question any way you like to get the preferred result. STOOPID!

russedav on May 29, 2014 at 4:02 PM

I think it’s pointless to ask about Shrillary’s health problems. There’s so much low hanging fruit. Are we saying that we can’t attack her on Benghazi? On Obamacare? What’s the deal? Are we going to campaign like the Dems aka Binder of Women tactics?

Brock Robamney on May 30, 2014 at 6:05 AM

The LSM generally doesn’t do old news unless it suits their purposes. Hilarity is getting pretty long in the tooth.
