Hillary declares she’s “proud of what we accomplished” at State

posted at 10:01 am on May 27, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Let’s recap Hillary Clinton’s tenure at State before diving into her remarks about it in her new book. It started with the mistranslated “reset button” that attempted to blame the Bush administration for tensions in US-Russian relations, and ended for all intents and purposes in the terrorist attack on our all-but-undefended consulate in Benghazi, resulting in the deaths of four Americans, including the first ambassador killed in the line of duty since the Carter administration. In between, the US gained no significant new trade agreements, turned Libya into a failed state in which al-Qaeda and its affiliates metastasized, fumbled the “Arab Spring” in Egypt, and retreated across the board.

Nevertheless, Hillary Clinton proclaims herself “proud of what we accomplished” — even if the AP report on her book excerpt notably does not include any concrete examples:

Hillary Rodham Clinton writes in new excerpts from her upcoming book that she wishes she could go back and reconsider some of her past decisions but she is “proud of what we accomplished” during her time as secretary of state.

Clinton, a potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, writes in an author’s note released Tuesday that her four years running the State Department for President Barack Obama taught her about the United States’ “exceptional strengths and what it will take for us to compete and thrive at home and abroad.”

“As is usually the case with the benefit of hindsight, I wish we could go back and revisit certain choices. But I’m proud of what we accomplished,” Clinton writes. “This century began traumatically for our country, with the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the long wars that followed, and the Great Recession. We needed to do better, and I believe we did.”

The only specific instance cited in the AP report was the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, which … was not an operation from State, but of the military coordinating with the intelligence community. Hillary uses it to laud the leadership of Barack Obama, as his top advisers were divided on whether to proceed with the mission. “It was as crisp and courageous a display of leadership as I’ve ever seen,” Hillary writes in her memoir.

That might be good news for Obama at this point, but it’s a strange time to cheer Obama for his leadership qualities. Hillary’s fellow Democrats are almost at the breaking point with Obama over his crisis management and executive qualities in general after the VA scandal failed to push Obama into action. Privately, Democrats are using words like “detached” and “incompetent” to describe Obama’s leadership, not “crisp” and “courageous.”

Under the circumstances, this attempt to cheerlead for 2009-12 seems dated, expired, and irrelevant. According to The Hill, that’s exactly how the Left feels about Hillary, too:

Liberal Democrats feel the wind is at their backs, making it all the more irksome for them that Hillary Clinton could be their presidential nominee in 2016.

For many on the left, Clinton is the woman who supported the Iraq war, ran to the right of President Obama and is associated with the Wall Street-friendly centrism espoused by her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Progressives feel they are in a political golden age in which questions about income inequality are growing louder, anti-gay marriage laws are falling and the growing Hispanic electorate regards the GOP with skepticism. Given all that, they don’t want to be stuck with a standard-bearer they see as too centrist.

Their problem is that they have few other choices, at least at the moment. The only other figures on the Left in position to challenge Hillary are first-term Senator Elizabeth Warren, socialist Bernie Sanders, or former Montana governor Brian Schweitzer, whose pro-energy stance makes him at best problematic for the Left. The ranks of Democratic governors are similarly filled with centrists who understand that progressivism is a losing proposition in most states. The only two who might emerge would be Andrew Cuomo and Deval Patrick, but neither looks able to break out of their own progressive constituencies into anything resembling a formidable general-election nominee.

On the other hand, almost all of them (except Warren and Sanders) have actual accomplishments to offer, rather than platitudes and paeans to Obama’s already-discredited leadership. The Left may not have to try all that hard to challenge Hillary in a primary.

It’s just cheap gold spray paint over pig iron.

Sorry but if you feel it necessary to change your ideological nomenclature from “liberal” to “progressive” because the former became too toxic, well then sister your “gold” smells like something from a cow pasture.

Deval Patrick has a list of scandals following him like the chains of some Dickens characters. Nearly 140 children are missing or dead while under the care of DCF and he’s personally overseeing the sate kidnapping of Justina Pelletier.

Ordering the killing of Bin Laden is a sign of strong leadership? It is a no brainer to do so, it is a must and imperative and there should have been a second of debate about it… The fact that they have debated this is the proof of their utter incompetence and lack of any leadership. it is simply amazing what passes as strength, leadership, and intelligence for these most incompetent fools…

The (non-Congress-approved and therefore illegal) war in Libya was supposed to be the counterweight to Iraq: Using “smart” power by coordinating with the so-called “secular” Muslim Brotherhood (remember O assuring us that these people were “doctors and lawyers”), Hillary & Co. would show how superior they were to the Bush administration. When their Pyrrhic victory turned into an unmitigated disaster, they quietly stepped back and essentially ended any meaningful US foreign party initiative.

And that is where we’ve been ever since, in a holding pattern dictated by future political ambitions, except for a brief moment of O acting stupidly by mentioning a “red line” while simultaneously daring the world not to call his bluff…

hilary did a lot of reform work with our foreign aid programs and fought hard against world hunger along with the clinton global initative. she did a lot of work to bring more cookstoves to poor people in places like africa.

just the fact that she was a woman made it easier for foreign leaders in countries that havent historically respected women as much to appoint women to diplomatic posts.

she was really important in the 2009 crisis in honduras following the coup tryinig to restore their democracy. and in putting pressure on columbia to punish government officials who were complicit in extralegal assassinations there.

climate change and enviromental issues were also very dear to her heart.

she did a lot to get the ball rolling on mideast peace talks which are now bearing lots of fruit.

the new start treaty was huge success. so was her support for the arab spring and democracy movements all over the world.

and on her watch we finally got bin laden.

while there might not be a lot of flashy things to point to her biggest accomplishment was the overall competence she displayed and the respect she commanded. there is no denying the usa’s standing in the world improved under her watchful eyes.

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on May 27, 2014 at 11:06 AM

While I agree that Hillary’s time at State had many failures and no successes, I don’t think it will hurt her whatsoever.

The general public, even the voting public, has no idea what happened in the last 10 years globally, and no idea of what Hillary did, or did not do, at State. the media certainly doesn’t cover it.

Instead, they will simply remember that she was Secretary of State, which gives her “gravitas” and “experience” for foreign policy. It doesn’t matter if her experience proves her incompetent, Americans don’t pay attention to any of that. They only pay attention to whether the correct boxes are checked. Particularly when the press won’t cover any of it and will pretend Hillary is the second coming.

And, of course, if 2008 is any indication, the GOP will be too scared to attack the “first female candidate for president”, so the voters won’t get that info from the GOP either.

As an aside, I laugh whenever anyone claims that Obama giving the green light to go after Osama was “leadership”. There is nobody – literally nobody – who would not have made that same decision. That was as much of a no brainer decision as it gets when it comes to military operations. the idea that such decision displays courage and leadership is so ludicrous as to demonstrate the paucity of leadership and courage that liberals have. You may as well laud them for remembering to breathe. It is absurd.

“Hey, I woke up this morning!” – You, my friend, have displayed leadership and courage. “Hey, I decided to give the go-ahead to kill the guy who orchestrated the biggest attack on American soil in 200 years”. Wow. You made a decision that nobody before or after you could have made in that position. Your courage and leadership in deciding to do the obvious choice just blows me away.

Idiots.

what happen in bengazi wasnt her fault. how many embassies were attacked during bush’s presidency? (answer..a lot). did anyone ever blame powell or condi rice for those attacks? (answer..i sure dont remember that happening).

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on May 27, 2014 at 10:49 AM

Not blaming her for the attack. Keeping it open after other allies closed theirs and not having more security in place after the ambassador begged for it that is all on her. I blame the other sorry excuse for not making the effort to help after the attack began.

wifarmboy on May 27, 2014 at 11:13 AM

How many of those were on the anniversary of 9/11/01? How many were denied security by State? How many of those were blamed on a video? How many of those were covered up? You aren’t even very good at trolling, let alone spelling or punctuation, are you, Needlenose?

bimmcorp on May 27, 2014 at 11:02 AM

its not hilarys fault the military and the cia was to incompetent to defend our people. thats there fault..not hers. repuglicans in congress bear some blame too for funding levels and their sequester. and there is zero evidence of any coverup. hilary herself has been an open book on the matter. she even subjected herself to a congressional witch hunt to show how open she is being. but with some people she just cant win.

ThisIsYourBrainOnKoch on May 27, 2014 at 11:06 AM

Watchful eyes on the world? Just laughable.

She wasn’t capable of keeping a watchful eye on her husband playing hide the cigar with 21 year old interns under the same roof.

But I do have to give you credit. She did a lot of watching. That’s all. Just watching.

So she was doing more than watching, she was visiting. LOL

Surely you cannot be serious. And really, Sonny. You need to brush up on spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. Trying to read your slop is painful.

That said, State Dept. is responsible for the security at all embassies. Hillary failed to provide it. Funding levels and the sequester had nothing to do with security, per the State Department’s own spokeswoman. The cover-up is ongoing. I blind man can see this. Hillary opened up nothing in Congress, and has refused to accept a shred of responsibility in any of this. And she stood in front of the coffins of the dead, looked into their parents eyes, and LIED about a stupid You-Tube Video. But you are quite correct. She cannot win, because she is a loser. As are you.

You really are thick. I was addressing her comment about her so-called “watchful eye”, and how she couldn’t even keep her eye on her husband who lived with her. But of course we know she knew exactly what was going on, but let it slide for her political ambitions.

Sort of like Benghazi.

I’m really not sure if he/she/it’s a troll or a parody. Part of me sees the ridiculous comments, and thinks that no one can drink that much kool-aid. But then I think about some liberals I know who still think BHO walks on water and has been a brilliant POTUS. Unfortunately, there are too many of them out there, and, worse, they are allowed to vote.

GAlpha10 on May 27, 2014 at 11:30 AM

She did increase liquor sales in Colombia that one time, but to be fair, the secret service helped, too.

She tried so hard, because she cared so much.

This is all BS, no real specifics, but it’s interesting that in floundering for accomplishments you mention a coup in Honduras.

Mel Zelaya wanted to rewrite the constitution of Honduras to stay in office as a sock puppet of Hugo Chavez. The 0b00ba Admin was on his side, of course.

More importantly, when State Dept officials and WH spokesmen have been asked what her accomplishments are, only stony silence emits. This is because if they offer up a plate of BS like yours, they’d have gotten their arses handed to them on video and they knew it.

Exposing you as a fool is easy, we just let you type.

then why are the military and cia in libya if not to protect our people?

Funding levels and the sequester had nothing to do with security, per the State Department’s own spokeswoman.

thats just simply not true.

The cover-up is ongoing. I blind man can see this.

if by blind man you mean partisan repuglicans, then i agree.

Hillary opened up nothing in Congress, and has refused to accept a shred of responsibility in any of this.

she didnt have to appear but she did. she made sure there were internal investigations. she wanted to get to the bottom of it as much as everyone else. but these investigations (and other investigations outside) cleared her of any wrongdoing.

And she stood in front of the coffins of the dead, looked into their parents eyes, and LIED about a stupid You-Tube Video.

was she not supposed to aknowledge the loss of these people? you would have been screaming just as much if she hadnt been there about how she doesnt really care.

and the cia told her about the youtube video. she didnt just make it up, no matter what tray gowdy tells you.

But you are quite correct. She cannot win, because she is a loser. As are you.
