Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on May 25, 2014 by Allahpundit

An always somber holiday turns grim this morning as the Sunday shows mark Memorial Day by zeroing in on the VA fiasco. Your best bet is “State of the Union” on CNN, which will have Jeff Miller and Bernie Sanders, the heads of the Veterans’ Affairs Committees in the House and Senate, respectively, on to preview legislative remedies. If you’d rather hear from vets themselves, “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” will feature leaders from the group Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. (See this poll for a taste of just how skeptical military families are of treatment at VA hospitals these days.) Obvious first question: Mend it or end it? Do we spend a few more decades forcing wounded troops to navigate this red-tape jungle or do we finally voucher this system out?

Beyond that, there’s a trifecta of long-shot 2016 candidates for the GOP nomination on the menu. Jon Huntsman will be on “This Week,” Ben Carson will appear on “Face the Nation” (interesting to see him turning up on broadcast networks lately as he mulls a run), and, most credibly, Mike Pence will drop by “State of the Union.” He’ll be asked about Indiana’s variations on Common Core and ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion; I hope for the sake of his political future that he comes well prepared. The full line-up is at Politico.

I guess it’s too soon for them to talk about the Isla Vista killer. They probably don’t have their “it’s the NRA’s fault” and “he must have been a secret teabagger” talking points worked out yet.

This one’s a little tougher since half the deaths were from stabbing and several of the injuries were people hit by his car. Plus he bought the guns legally and he’s the son of a Hollywood AD. So yeah, I think some Alinskyites are sitting this one out. Some.

Dongemaharu on May 25, 2014 at 8:15 AM

Solving the VA problem is not rocket science.
Just give them the same health care that our elected reps get. Give them the same healthcare our believed Senators and House Reps. get.
…………
Another idea I have an idea if you really care about the troops and those who have served in our armed forces. My suggestion would be to boycott anything Mexican.
If you book a cruise to Cancun cancel it. Don’t go there.
If you see a piece of fruit or any food product that says product of Mexico don’t buy it. If your Chevy says assembled in Mexico buy a ford. Checkout the labels on all your clothing, buy anything except Mexico.
They will get it real quick. When its OK for a turd world country like the mexicons to take our soldiers and hold them in chains on a bed for 35 days simply for making a wrong turn its time to send these bastards a message the best way we can. With our wallets.

Yes.

That’s why public outrage is necessary. It will nudge the narrative off the idea that “Ric” Shinseki is an honorable man handed an impossible task by GWB. That “Ric” really is madder than hell and had no idea about these wait lists, abuse of veterans, and all the rest. We must insist that the filthy dishonorable bastard be drummed out of public office.

In the meantime. As we honor our war dead, this TRIBUTE might put it in perspective why our veterans deserve better than “Ric.”

I’d say that you are not giving him enough of a chance to spell out his views. At this point- two years out from when the 2016 campaign really begins to heat up. If the choice is between an outsider and somebody like Rand Paul or Chris Christie because of “executive experience” give me the guy who made his career doing something that actually contributed to society rather than the fat blowhard who used his office for settling personal beefs.

Dr. C seems like a nice guy and really concerned about the country, but there’s already been a first black president and we must move on to the first woman president, then the first hispanic which J. Castro should be prepped for by the time Killary gets through trashing the country.
The VA should have spent that bonus money, over 5.1M in 3 years, toward hiring more docs and buying medical eq instead of office furniture. This is what we get when bureaucrats run anything. Less of what’s actually needed and more bureaucrats stealing our money.

renalin on May 25, 2014 at 8:54 AM

Yup.

No matter that Elliott Rodger stabbed three people, then shot three people, then ran over four more individuals with his BMW. He then shot himself.

The present narrative in this country is that every senseless killing is the NRA’s fault. No matter if a knife is used, a car is used, or a gun is used. No matter if the person is mentally unstable. No matter what Rodger’s home life was like. No matter how many violent video games he played. No matter that Rodger’s family alerted authorities to videos he had made “regarding suicide and the killing of people.”

No matter what the real issues are.

Because it’s the NRA’s fault that this happened. That’s where we’re at in this country, apparently.

And so it begins.

Fallon on May 25, 2014 at 9:00 AM

renalin on May 25, 2014 at 8:54 AM

Well of course he did. UCSB is an uber-liberal school filled with spoiled rich kids. There is no doubt the parents of the victims are going to attack the NRA the same way those despicable Sandy Hook parents politicized the deaths of their children.

The reality was that the shooter appears to have had mental problems, and of course was bullied “every day of his life.” He looks like the typical pajama boy who was the scion of Hollywood insiders. Clearly he had no sense of reality and if there is any criticism to be had, the blame probably begins with the shooter’s parents.

You obviously know nothing of Ben Carson beyond his skin color and the fact he was raised by a single mother. Dr. Carson is a renowned brain surgeon, spending his entire life in the private sector earning a living. Obama is a career politician, and a poor one at that, who has virtually no experience in the private sector. Don’t sell Carson short just because he isn’t a career politician – that attribute hasn’t done the country much good in recent decades.

Think they might talk about this old story today?

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa on Wednesday asked the federal Office of Special Counsel to investigate two top aides to President Obama for attempting to influence Democratic Senate primaries.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and his deputy, Jim Messina, tried to clear a path for favored candidates in the Pennsylvania and Colorado primaries, the White House has said. Issa, R-Calif., wants the Office of Special Counsel to investigate whether either man violated the federal Hatch Act, which prohibits using public office for political activity.

“Rahm Emanuel was leveraging the power and access of his official position to advance the political interests of the Democratic Party by affecting the result of the Pennsylvania Democratic primary,” Issa said.

It’s back in the news now that Judicial Watch filed a FOIA lawsuit. What am nuts? Of course, it won’t be brought up.

(Man, you guys are up and at it early today!)

It’s Sunday morning, and that means Propaganda with a capital D. Once again the Democrat/Liberal Media Complex will bring you all of the issues nearest and dearest to liberals of both parties, and attempt to de-emphasize the voices of over half of America – conservatives.

Will they succeed in drowning the rare conservative guest in their septic tank of liberal dopes?

Let’s have a gander:

“Meet the Press” on NBC
• Preempted by Formula One auto racing

A dramatic improvement already. Since the story about NBC seeking psychiatric help for their idiot liberal “moderator” David Gregory, the entire show has been pre-empted by European sports broadcasts … twice. (Hey, a third Euro-waxing!) Heh.

“Face the Nation” on CBS
• Richard Blumenthal – Liberal
• John Thune – Conservative
• Adam Kinzinger – RINO-ILL
• Ben Carson – Conservative activist

In this Year of the RINO, I find it interesting to note – Thune, largely disregarded as a RINO when he hinted at a run for President, is an 87 ACU conservative.

If you look at Thune’s fellow guest Adam Kinzinger and his fellow South Dakota “conservative” Kristi Noem, you have two House members both elected in 2010 with huge Tea Party support. Kinzinger sports a 3 year rating of 66 with a 52 in 2013 (and again – remember that the ACU is a pro-amnesty operation, so they don’t knock your pro-amnesty vote in their scoring model), and Noem racks up a 75, with a 62 rating in 2013. Maybe this is the gravest insult to the Tea Party – they elected some of the worst new RINOs in congress.

“This Week” on ABC
• Martin Dempsey – As painfully noted in the McRaven column this week, I despise all military leaders who praise our asswipe President, and most of those who work for him. I know nothing else about Dempsey.
• Eric Huntsman RINO
• Plouffe – Kook Left
• Rieckhoff – Army veteran, scandalized by a Stolen Valor incident; appears on all of the Kook Left shows. Got nothing else on him. Chime in if you have input.
• John Sununu – Conservative

Fairly typical for ABC. One con and a bunch of cloudy misdirection.

“Fox News Sunday” on Fox
• Kelly Ayotte – RINO
• Derek Bennett – Another IAVA guy I know nothing about.

“State of the Union” on CNN
• Mike Pence – Conservative
• Bernie Sanders – Bernie the Socialist. Caucuses with the Democrats to keep them honest and centered.
• Jeff Miller – Conservative
• Penny Lee – Liberal

“Newsmakers” on C-SPAN
• Sanders – Double dip for the Socialist.

“Al Punto” on Racist TV / Univision
• John Boehner – RINO jackass
• Harry Reid – Liberal jackass
• Benjamin Netanyahu – Israeli guy

Hey, second time in a few months that The Racist TV Station hosted non-Mexican guests. Exciting.

Overall Score for the DNC Media – a Solid B-. Not bad. But go for a walk instead.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Richard Martinez, the father of Chris Martinez, who was killed in the premeditated attack near the campus of UC Santa Barbara, spoke for 45 minutes, extolled the virtues of his son, and expressed his disdain for the National Rifle Association for refusing to back greater gun control legislation. “Chris was a really great kid,” Martinez lamented. “Ask anyone who knew him. His death has left our family lost and broken.”

Martinez, in an emotional plea, asked, “Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA… When will enough people say, ‘Stop this madness.’ We do not have to live like this. Too many people have died. We should say to ourselves, ‘not one more.’”

That Politico “lineup” left off Dr. Margaret Moxness, the VA hospital whistle blower who has more than 20 years experience with the VA. I saw her interview and she seemed genuinely conflicted at leaving the VA Hospital system because of the scandal and leaving her veteran patients who were under her care. She also endorsed the Derek Bennett organization, Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, which gets veterans who are beoing failed by the VA into private practice treatment. She said they “were nimble and got things done.”
.
This physician is a hero, not only because she has done the right thing but because she is publicizing the problems at the VA at personal risk to herself. Interesting that Politico left out the person who has brought more scandal and public, bi-partisan pressure on Øbama and his feckless administration. They must have an agenda.

But the difference is Dr. Carson is NOT BHO. He wants different things for our country, and has a completely different vision. He was on the View (of all places!) this week, and was very warmly received by the audience. He, unlike BHO, is a man of such staggering accomplishments, few can challenge him on that score. His gentle demeanor covers a strength of character we’re not used to seeing in public life. I believe he could reach a great number of people and be a truly healing figure, which is exactly what America is going to need after the eight years of the tearing apart by BHO and his followers.

I watched a bit of This Week’s panel. Evidently, the Obama administration got to those clowns to ensure that they had someone on it to cover for Obama. What Plouffe knows about the VA is beyond me, but he was there to plug away for Obama and to interrupt the GOP strategist who had trouble getting out her points. Nice.

On the Fox News panel (George Will, Kirsten Powers, Kim Strassel, and Charles Laine–all journalists), it’s evident that Powers is back on the liberal reservation. She unbelievably complained that she has as many problems with the private sector as with the public sector. She said that she has as many problems with US Airways and other airlines as she has with Amtrak. It was really unbelievable. What the hell does she want? I guess Powers wants Moscow on the Potomac. Despite her occasional walks on the conservatives, she’s nothing but a crackpot. Happily, in the last word, Will hammered her by emphasizing that bad airlines go out of business, while big government just gets bigger.

For sure, our govt. could not care less about our soldiers and fighting men. they go after them and try and destroy them at every level from ROE’s to making sure they are in the wrong places at the wrong time.
We now have a govt. run by MB’s and other losers.

Six Absolutely Shocking Details From Suspected Santa Barbara Shooter’s 141-Page Manifesto

The family of the killer has just released a pro-gun control statement.

What is wrong with them? That kid was far more dangerous than any gun. Why didn’t they do more to protect society from him?

Now they release this statement? Why, to deflect any guilt they may feel for not intervening?

LilyBart on May 25, 2014 at 9:55 AM

Yesterday they were claiming he had Asperger syndrome. Since he wasn’t clumsy, did not have difficulty using language, and did not engage in OCD-like repetitive behavior, I’d have to question this.

What is not questionable is that he was arrogant and narcissistic (frequently describing himself as “magnificent” in his “manifesto”), had serious problems with sexuality (also in said manifesto- he wanted to eliminate sex from civilization, mostly by eliminating women in a style reminiscent of Auschwitz crossed with Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale),and hated the rest of humanity in general. He had megalomania and delusions of grandeur, and was certain that he should rule the world.

He thought he was “owed” a sex life due to being rich, handsome, and having nice clothes and a BMW. He also had a classic “victim profile”, focused on blonde women in their teens and twenties, specifically members of a specific sorority on campus.

In short, his problem was less that he may have had Asperger, than that he fit the psych profile of a standard-issue, sex-motivated serial/spree killer.

I suspect that in the end we’ll find that he was coddled and spoiled by his (very rich, Hollywood-issue) parents, who indulged their “precious little snowflake” and constantly told him how wonderful he was.

The real world wasn’t impressed. It saw an arrogant, self-centered little pr**k who came on to women like John Holmes and was told to shove off for precisely that reason. He also had a fascination, not with guns, but with violence in general at about Gilles de Rais or Erzebet Bathory levels.

(Please note that his first three kills were stabbings, and his manifesto mentions his desire to run people down with an SUV. And oh yes, to kill his kid brother and stepmother- the brother to prevent him from “outdoing” the creep, and the stepmother “just because”. I suspect this nut could, and probably would, use his teeth on someone if the opportunity presented itself. He was about one notch above “feral”.)

The police visited him due to his YouTube videos- but since no crime had been committed, not even felony menacing, this self-described “stalker” could not be charged. And “warning” someone with close ties to the Hollywood “nobility” tends to result in a long talk with both IAD and your captain; if you’re lucky, you don’t end up called on the carpet by the Chief.

Now, if you or I did the same, it’s very likely we’d have been under court-ordered observation after that first visit. And ended up with a psych record that would have prevented us from legally buying even one gun, let alone three.

But we’re not Hollywood VIPs. He was, or at least was closely related and linked to same. It makes a difference, and don’t let any LA politician tell you different. Or any pol from anywhere else, for that matter.

This guy didn’t “slip through the cracks”. All the clues were there, but as long as he didn’t actually break any laws, nobody would dare to do anything about him that would have brought down the wrath of The People Who Matter in Tinseltown. It’s just that simple.

As it is, they now have another drum to beat for banning guns. Except for their own paid bodyguards, that is.

And the other sons with similar delusions are free to do the same or worse whenever they get the urge. Because of course, being “the elite’”, they deserve to live by a different set of rules than all those “peasants”.

RHIP, don’t you know.

Ben Carson has a conservative viewpoint. But I see him as ‘our’ Obama.

And so will the Enemedia. We already had out historic first “black” President. America will never vote for another black man as President after this fiasco. Next up on the Affirmative Action List will be the first non-Palin woman President, and then the first non-Rubio Hispanic President.

We stopped being a serious nation long ago.

If you are going to “cough cough” about Jeb, and care anything for amnesty, you should know that Carson thinks:

“. . . we have taken the moral low road on this issue. Some segments of our economy would virtually collapse without these undocumented workers—we all know that—yet we continue to harass and deport many individuals who are simply seeking a better life for themselves and their families.” From his book America the Beautiful. And, further, he wants them to have a path to citizenship.

And nary a word about the millions of out-of-work Americans, many of them put there by his beloved illegals. Carson shows that he knows zilch about illegal immigrants and the harm they have caused this country and its citizens. He obviously is on board with Jeb’s “act of love” declaration. No thanks, Dr. Carson. Get a little more informed before you make such a ridiculous comment.

Jaibones on May 26, 2014 at 7:07 AM

As I said before, when white person does things it’s the individual. When a black person does something it’s the whole damn race.

1. You’re a sad little dope, aren’t you?

B. This is one of the costs of professing that the only important political issue is the color of your own skin. Note carefully that white people don’t do this. Is this intellectual freedom the direct luxury of having created a nation almost entirely of white people? Of course. But rather than mock this joy, consider just reveling in it and urging others to do so.

5. Again, you’re not bright enough to grasp this but others have noted with wonder how conservatives admire and elevate women, blacks and Hispanics as leaders with apparent glee. No, we don’t see race and gender first, but we do note with great sadness how blacks attack any non-white who identifies as a conservative.
