The administration has quietly stopped releasing ObamaCare enrollment numbers

posted at 7:01 pm on May 24, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

During the initial open enrollment period, the Obama administration released monthly enrollment reports that — even if they were exasperatingly incomplete and/or doctored in what data they chose to reveal — gave us at least some sort of idea of what was going on with the president’s crowning legislative achievement. Now that the Obama administration has that alleged 8 million sing-ups number to tout, however, they evidently no longer feel the need to even keep up the pretense of releasing regular reports on the law’s progress. As Politico reports (paywall):

The Obama administration has quietly decided to halt its monthly updates on Obamacare enrollment, which were a major pipeline of information about the impact of the health law heading into the 2014 campaign season. ‘HHS issued monthly enrollment reports during the first marketplace open enrollment period in order to provide the best understanding of enrollment activities as it was taking place,’ an HHS spokeswoman emailed. ‘Now that this time period has ended, we will look at future opportunities to share information about the marketplace that is reliable and accurate over time as further analysis can be done but we do not anticipate monthly reports.’ The agency offered no information about the timing or level of detail in any future updates.

Yes, the initial open enrollment period is over, but people can still sign up for health insurance through the exchanges if they experience a qualifying “life event” (job loss, new baby, etc.). That means that the number of the ObamaCare-insured could continue to rise throughout the year, but people can also still drop their newfound health insurance at any time for any number of reasons — meaning that the number could fall, too. As Michael Cannon explains at Forbes:

I have written at some length about the huge incentives ObamaCare creates to drop one’s coverage and wait until sick to re-enroll, and how those incentives threaten the stability of the law’s health insurance Exchanges. Basically, if you drop your coverage, (1) avoiding the penalty is fairly straightforward, (2) you can get re-enroll the following January no matter how sick you get, and (3) in many cases, ObamaCare lets you enroll in coverage before January, again no matter how sick you get. If healthy enrollees become aware of and act on this perverse incentive, the Exchange pools will grow sicker, premiums will rise further, and the Exchanges could collapse.

Gaba expects enrollments to continue to rise each month. But if attrition overwhelms new enrollment, it could mean that consumers find Exchange plans too expensive relative to job-based coverage, or that the poor quality of Exchange coverage is causing people to flee, or that people are gaming the system in the above manner.

In other words, the Obama administration doesn’t really know what’s going to happen with the trajectory of the enrollment numbers — and they don’t really want us to find out, especially not before the midterms while they still have that awesome 8 million “mission accomplished” number to trumpet. I suppose we shouldn’t expect anything less from The Most Transparent Administration, Evah.

That’s because everyone knew the numbers were lies, and would be used against D’s during the midterm.

The number is plummeting as “sign-ups” don’t pan out. I’m guessing duplicate sign-ups and simple nonj-payment are taking a huge bite out of the bunkum enrollment numbers the MSM kept parroting without question.

Numbers are logical, not touchy-feelly, if the real corrected numbers of people who not only just signed up,but have actually paid their monthly Heath insurance fees were made public; it would expose more lies by the corrupt Obamacare law and the lying idiots running it.. They have so many lies, upon lies swirling about them they must be getting dizzy. We will see more and more states have failing healthcare coverage due to people bailing and opting for the tax, it will be more affordable than the cost of new/ poorer coverage and those pesky not saving 2600.00 / month for families. Sigh…just more lies. And as we are seeing in Calif., more people clogging up the ERs because they know hospitals will have to see them if they go to the ER,it’s the law. What a mess!

Cindy Munford on May 24, 2014 at 7:19 PM

That was never a real number. The claim was that they enrolled 8 million people who didn’t have insurance before. Factoring out those kicked off their “substandard” plans an onto Obamacare the number of those who were actually previously uninsured is much smaller and the taxpayers are picking up the costs for these parasites.

The trouble with liberal radio is it’s about ideology not business. They can’t seem to get that Rush is not on the radio because he’s conservative. He’s on the radio because he brings in lots of viewers which generates lots of ads for the radio stations he’s on.

Brings in the viewers to radio, eh? ;0

But seriously, I’ve got to disagree slightly. Rush is not on the radio because he is a conservative. He’s on radio because he has a conservative message that has created a huge national network of affiliates. That’s what brings in the ad revenue.

Liberal talk radio is nothing but screeching that even turns off my liberal friends. No audience, no ad revenue. And I think the genuis who thought Michael Savage was an awesome choice who thought that he could replace Sean Hannity on afternoon drive time will find the same thing out with most conservatives.

Mitch McConnell Softens Opposition To Obamacare

In a stunning reversal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) suggested on Friday that he would not support repealing Kynect, Kentucky’s state-run health care exchange. The marketplace has been a model for effective Affordable Care Act implementation, enrolling over 400,000 people in health insurance coverage since October.

It sure is. Good luck cutting SS or any other Government check by 25% to make it happen though.

A couple of hours with no EBT cards showed us what will happen. Multiply that by about 2,500,000% and you will get to about half of the reaction when SS, disability checks and Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements get cut by any amount.

Johnnyreb on May 24, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Good commentary — with some history thrown in — about what we all already know about the intellectuals who stuck us with Obamacare:

They Had A Dream

[Obamacare ]… did none of these things. It did not fix the dysfunctions of the individual market; it destroyed it. It did not save money; it squandered billions. It did not bring peace and security to tens of millions of people; it took it away from them. The best and the brightest had made their predictions. They were wrong.

HiJack on May 25, 2014 at 12:57 AM

The Obama administration has quietly decided to halt its monthly updates on Obamacare enrollment,

This is really no surprise and quiet predictable.

First some facts:

1. If you want to access the account a user must first create an account. The option to visit without creating an account was turned off before the roll out to force people to create the account.

2. The back end of the web site that was to accept the payment was and presumably still is, not built. Without that ability, and forced sign-ins, the numbers are generated based on the number of accounts created to access the policy options.

3. The numbers climbed rapidly as the deadline came and was extended, by the millions with a web site that has never proven to be able to handle anywhere near that number.

4. It can be question if insurance companies could accept the information from the web site, verify the information, and process the applications in the time period that the numbers went from around 3-4 million to 8 million.

5. Obama extended the enrollment to the deadline for filing taxes. Why?

The reason should be evident to anyone that used Turbo Tax to do their tax return. I assume that other programs were used as well.

When you logged in to do your taxes, there was an option to access the government website. It clearly stated that if the user chose not to go to the web site at that time, another opportunity would be available at the end.

Some may have taken advantage of the last opportunity to sign up who may not have known how before or out of fear, but a sizable number may simply have been curious what it would cost them, or might if they lose their insurance in this next round of policy drops.

Everyone who followed that link had to create an account to sign in. Obama counts each sign in as if they bought a policy. In this case it could have been even an attempt to sign in, if the theme of the last extension on attempted sign in bears any significance.

Now that the real numbers are being processed, that 8 million most likely has become a liability in the face of the real numbers. I would be very surprised if we ever see the real current numbers.

Franklyn on May 25, 2014 at 1:18 AM

The science is settled.

ceraphym on May 25, 2014 at 6:53 AM

There are bound to be people who figure out that they are paying double the previous price for half the coverage, that with deductibles and copays they will pay at least as much as their annual premiums each year before anything but the specified tests and drugs are covered.

It’s a terrible deal, and if you can gamble for the last few months of the year, why not? Re-enroll during the next open enrollment period, carry for a few months, drop again. It will be happening. Maybe only 10%, but that’s a very significant number.

Adjoran on May 25, 2014 at 7:15 AM

If the numbers held good news they would be trumpeting them from the rooftops. Press kits would show up in every American’s mailbox. Obama would be basking in the glow of the floodlights and the adulation of the masses.

They are hiding the numbers.

Thus they suck like all get-out and then some.
