Thank Hillary for Dem participation on Benghazi select committee?

posted at 8:41 am on May 22, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

When House Republicans insisted on forming a select committee to investigate the failures that led up to and resulted from the attack on our consulate in Benghazi, one might have expected Hillary Clinton to shrug it off. She famously shouted at Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) during a Senate hearing on the State Department’s actions surrounding the deaths of four Americans, “What difference at this point does it make?” It makes a big difference to Hillary now, enough so that her aides pressured Nancy Pelosi into full participation in the select committee, according to Politico:

Hillary Clinton’s world was so worried about a Republican investigation of the Benghazi attacks, they sent a message to House Democrats: We need backup.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) publicly considered boycotting the panel, an idea that Clinton supporters feared would leave the potential 2016 candidate exposed to the enemy fire of House Republicans.

So Clinton emissaries launched a back channel campaign, contacting several House Democratic lawmakers and aides to say they’d prefer Democrats participate, according to sources familiar with the conversations. Pelosi’s staff said they have not heard from Clinton’s camp. …

Clinton and her allies know from experience the kind of damage an emboldened Republican House committee can inflict.

Politico’s Jake Sherman and Anna Palmer even broach the idea of a Clinton appearance at a committee hearing, although one has to assume she’d work hard to avoid that kind of trap. No matter how well Clinton does, getting hauled in front of a committee investigating a major catastrophe like Benghazi cannot help one’s political prospects; the only way to win is not to play at all. It’s going to be difficult to avoid, though, as the issue of facility security and especially the unusual waivers came directly to her desk.

Gowdy gave a strong hint that he’d call Clinton to testify:

Asked whether Clinton will [be] brought to Capitol Hill, Gowdy said, “without specific reference to any individual, if someone has knowledge surrounding a relevant fact, I would expect the committee to talk to them.”

“You’re a smart guy, do you think she has knowledge surrounding any relevant facts?” Gowdy said.

That is why Team Hillary wants Democrats on the panel — and Democrats with at least a modicum of gravitas. It does Hillary no good to have Alan Grayson tossing softballs at her, and possibly some harm if Grayson leaves his clown nose on for the exercise. She will need Democrats that carry some weight and respect to help her bolster her narratives when Republicans rip them to shreds, especially on the strategy of ignoring the danger signs that were all flashing red in Libya for months in order to maintain the pretense that State and White House policy in Libya had been a smashing success. That’s why the consulate was left all but undefended, and why the military hadn’t been properly mobilized on the anniversary of 9/11.

Hillary can’t afford to have her incompetence and venality exposed by this House select committee. And that’s the difference at this point it makes to have Democrats as backup on the panel.

Would it be possible to depose Hillary first to get her definitively on the record and then call her to appear before the committee and crucify her?

Elijah Cummings? This guy seems to be the go-to black shield in the House for all things Dem. I don’t even see Clyburne near cameras anymore. I think he’s wearing out his welcome with Americans through his whining on Benghazi and the IRS scandals.

I think Duckworth is an interesting pick. Maybe Dems think they pull a sly one. But prosthetic limbs or not, she’ll blow ALL credibility if she dismisses the security and military concerns that will get raised throughout the hearings. Thanks for your service, lady, but you’re useless if all the Dems do is use you to be some kind of shield behind which Obama and Hillary can hide their failures.

Hillary Clinton’s world was so worried about a Republican investigation of the Benghazi attacks, they sent a message to House Democrats: We need backup.

That goes a long way of explaining the inane comments Pelosi made yesterday.

Dems didn’t want to participate in a political witch hunt so they held off naming people to the committee while trying to make the rules fair (i.e. equal representation).

When that didn’t happen, Pelosi sees the need of naming critters because the committee is a political witch hunt.

And when it comes to Killary the term witch hunt is slightly misspelled.

Deano1952 on May 22, 2014 at 9:09 AM

This is about accountability to the people who own this government.

For far too long, there has not been a single Democrat responsible for anything. Apparently, the IRS Scandal, our terrible economy, 93 million people out of our workforce, the release of felonious illegal aliens and disgusting, profound incompetence that permitted four Americans to be murdered just…”happens” or is a figment of our imaginations.

Does it “matter”? Your damn right it does. We don’t need another incompetent, bumbling, ass-covering, unaccountable career bureaucrat who has not held a real job outside government in 25 years in the Executive Office.

Willys on May 22, 2014 at 9:12 AM

In August of 1992, Daniel Wattenberg wrote the following prophetic statement in the opening of an article for “The American Spectator” titled, “The Lady Macbeth of Little Rock”…

Hillary Clinton has been likened to Eva Peron, but it’s a bad analogy. Evita was worshipped by the “shirtless ones,” the working class, while Hillary’s charms elude most outside of an elite cohort of left-liberal, baby-boom feminists-the type who thought Anita Hill should be canonized and Thelma and Louise was the best movie since Easy Rider. Hillary reckons herself the next Eleanor Roosevelt. But, standing well to the left of her husband and enjoying an independent power base within his coalition, Hillary is best thought of as the Winnie Mandela of American politics. She has likened the American family to slavery, thinks kids should be able to sue their parents to resolve family arguments, and during her tenure as a foundation officer gave away millions (much of it in no-strings-attached grants) to the left-including sizable sums to hard-left organizers. She is going to cause her husband no end of political embarrassment between now and November-and who knows how long afterward.

Mr. Wattenberg nailed that one, huh?

kingsjester on May 22, 2014 at 9:12 AM

The Committee should refrain from calling Hillary until the evidence against her gets so voluminous and incriminating that she ASKS to testify to defend herself. As soon as Republicans call her as a witness they will be accused of using the hearings to play politics and interfere with the Presidential elections. (Even though Hillary hasn’t said she’s running yet.) So don’t.

Hmmmm, so there is some there there and Killary wants it kept covered up. Gowdy is the best man to figure this out if he has the backing of Bonehead to do so.

Kissmygrits on May 22, 2014 at 9:22 AM

I think the Benghazi cover-up is a clear example of just how rudderless this administration is. In September 2012 they couldn’t see past the 2012 elections so they were willing to say anything to keep up the narrative that they had decimated Al Qaeda.

So the attack at Benghazi was all about a YouTube video. A lie that they repeated often over the next three weeks, including the now infamous “Full Ginsberg” by Susan Rice. Then there was a period of distract and delay as the State Department conducted an internal investigation that didn’t bother even interviewing Killary. By that point, Killary thought she could run out the clock and leave her job without ever discussing Benghazi. She ultimately went to a hearing but she was not under oath. Kerry took over as SecState and declared he had no intention of spending any time rehashing Benghazi. A settled incident.

In short, this administration thought they could stall, delay, and ignore the whole Benghazi thing. The press has been helpful to this end but it hasn’t proved to be enough. So now Killary is going have to testify under oath. It could well scuttle her aspirations for a 2016 run. Hence the Dems suddenly want to particpate in an investigation they declared to be meaningless and partisan.

When you lose a child (in my case a daughter in law), you want answers. So either Clinton meant what she said in which case she’s a callous bitch (could be) or else her brain injury was a factor in her remarks. It which case she’s not fit to take the 3 a.m. phone call. None of this bodes well for her. So of course she wants someone on the committee to have her back. But there really is no way out for her.

easyt65 on May 22, 2014 at 12:21 PM

That is why Team Hillary wants Democrats on the panel — and Democrats with at least a modicum of gravitas.

Gravitas? That bunch of liars and corrupt hacks?

I notice Cummings became relatively subdued after Issa exposed him for collusion with the IRS and concealing his collusion from the Oversight Committee on which he sat as the ranking minority. Duckworth walked out on the families of the dead. Schiff has already announced his conclusions.

But Gowdy isn’t Issa, and will do things differently. There won’t be nearly as many opportunities for disruption and obstruction because Gowdy will do the heavy lifting in depositions outside the public eye. That will get a lot more work done, and very much parallels how a trial is prepared and presented to a jury. Expect the hearings to be used to summarize and expose the important evidence already uncovered in depositions and through subpoenas.

In a way that is too bad though. I think the inevitable Democrat efforts to turn the hearings into circuses will backfire. Only the dedicated Obama faithful will approve of such tactics; people are increasingly fed up with the nonsense. They want the truth and the whole truth.

novaculus on May 22, 2014 at 12:53 PM

If they want to keep their ‘gravitas’ they will have a hard time bolstering her narrative.

I expect that the course of the committee will start at the bottom, not the top, to understand the course of events so that by the time you get to Hillary no one will have the ability to actually bolster her claims without looking like a no-gravitas fool.

That is the way a prosecutor would go: build up the case from small to large. Watercarriers need buckets without holes in them, and the buckets are going to get some rounds of 00 until there are no sides nor bottoms left to them.

ajacksonian on May 22, 2014 at 1:37 PM

all of Nancy’s picks are bomb throwers. Trey got people with prosecutorial experience, Dems offer nutjobs.

As I’ve said before, the modern democratic party draws to it amoral people. Soon, when the money runs out, they will become extinct.

No society survives if it lets the amoral rule. At some point we’ll have to decide.

Ask the Romans and how they handled it.

If Republicans comport themselves correctly on this committee, are very fact-oriented and don’t grandstand, this could — could — fail spectacularly for Democrats.

If Republicans make the compelling case of what stinks here and what’s unanswered (and we know Gowdy can do that), then force relevant players to answer questions about it, and the Democrats appear to be doing nothing except being political and trying to protect Hillary … as I said, it could backfire majorly on Dems.

Of course it would help if an honest media made the observation, but that’s an impossibility.

FishingwFredo on May 22, 2014 at 3:00 PM

There are any number of events that could prevent the Hildebeast from attending any hearings if she is called.

1. Obviously, her concussion and subsequent blood clot on the brain could do so but that would reopen discussion of her general state of fitness.

2. Also, Bill could have a relapse of his heart problems. She could claim that her place is by his side, although the only time you see them together is at a fund-raiser or some other public event that is deemed to shine the light of glory on them.

3. Chelsea could have a slight pregnancy scare (I certainly hope not) that would cause Hill and Bill to rush to her side and thereby garner them some sympathetic public attention and concern.

She has no current “job” other than some ephemeral duties at their Foundation. Can’t see any emergency arising from that.

And how much did Biden’s boorish behavior during the VP debate cost him? Dems eat that stuff up with a spoon.
