Darrell Issa: E-mail shows White House contacted YouTube during Benghazi attack about Mohammed movie

posted at 6:41 pm on May 22, 2014 by Allahpundit

Here’s how long the long and winding road of Benghazi news has gotten. When I saw this story earlier, I tweeted my surprise that the White House would have actually tried to quasi-censor a movie by leaning on its online distributor to do something about it while Islamist mobs were rampaging in the Middle East. Nothing to be surprised about, Gabe Malor reminded me: Not only have we known that was true since the first few days after the attack, I myself blogged it at the time. I had honestly forgotten. We’ve reached the point of Benghazi saturation where politically motivated government censorship is just a footnote to the who-knew-what-and-when debate.

But yes, your leaders “asked” their friends in the tech industry to suppress an inconvenient bit of speech because it was making people overseas very, very angry. Maybe Trey Gowdy will manage a few minutes for that topic during the select committee’s hearing. In the meantime, though, Issa’s still on the who-knew-what-and-when trail. If the White House was thinking about the video while the attack in Bengazi was still ongoing, is that incriminating or exculpatory?

The subject line of the e-mail, which was sent at 9:11 p.m. Eastern Time on the night of the attack, is “Update on Response to actions – Libya.” The was written hours before the attack was over…

“White House is reaching out to U-Tube [sic] to advice ramification of the posting of the Pastor Jon video,” the e-mail reads, according to Issa.

Asked about the document, a senior White House official told ABC News it demonstrates that the White House genuinely believed the video sparked the attack all along, a belief that turned out to be incorrect…

Issa has an entirely different view. He contends the document contradicts the White House assertion that it was the CIA who first pinned blame for the attack on protests in response to the anti-Islamic video.

The “Pastor Jon video” is, I believe, a garbled reference to Pastor Terry Jones, who was publicizing the Mohammed movie to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11. But anyway: Does the e-mail prove the White House’s good faith by showing that the YouTube video was on their radar from the beginning and not something they cooked up to make Susan Rice’s spin that Sunday a bit easier? Or does it prove that the YouTube video did indeed come from a political outfit like the White House, not intelligence agents? Actually, you don’t need the new e-mail to ask that question. At 10:08 p.m. on the night of the attack, less than an hour after the e-mail was sent, the State Department issued this statement from Hillary Clinton:

I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission in Benghazi today. As we work to secure our personnel and facilities, we have confirmed that one of our State Department officers was killed. We are heartbroken by this terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who have suffered in this attack.

This evening, I called Libyan President Magariaf to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya. President Magariaf expressed his condemnation and condolences and pledged his government’s full cooperation.

Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.

There’s no question that the video was on the White House’s radar from the beginning. The questions are (a) who put it there, the CIA or some political actor, and more importantly, (b) why was it still there three days later after information had begun flowing in that a jihadi group was behind the whole thing? The “spontaneous protest” theory was more durable than it should have been, it seems, to the point where it took weeks for Obama to start calling the attack an, er, attack. Figuring out why it was durable is one of Gowdy’s core tasks, along with that pesky government-suppressing-speech thing.

At the time the White House was blaming this attack on a YouTube video Barnhart had a video marking pages of the Quran with bacon and then ripping the pages out and burning them meanwhile this cat makes a video that nobody has ever seen and that’s the video that the White House blames the attack on. It’s specious at best.

This almost makes it sound like they believed it was the video, but why so quickly and why did they continue with it . Sounds like the plan to blame this was laid out before the attack. CIA?

sandee on May 22, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Or does it prove that the YouTube video did indeed come from a political outfit like the White House, not intelligence agents?

If it was entirely made up by political actors, why would they contact youtube to take it down?

themuppet on May 22, 2014 at 6:47 PM

Maybe they contacted YouTube asking if there were any videos they could blame for this?
Because assigning blame is certainly more important than saving the lives of Americans overseas.

That and the fact that the MSM will focus primarily on the inevitable Gowdy-Cummings shouting matches instead of reporting on any meaningful content.

I suspect that some idiot leftist was told by a Muslim ‘expert’ that the youtube video was to blame for the riots and they actually believed it. When the Benghazi attack took place their first impulse was to call youtube rather than the US military.

Could they possibly be that stupid?

Sadly, I think they could.

As to why Pastor Terry Jones is mentioned?

http://theweek.com/article/index/233239/the-obscure-anti-muslim-film-that-sparked-egyptian-and-libyan-riots-a-guide

How did the movie become so widespread in the Middle East?

A 14-minute trailer for the movie was posted to YouTube in July, followed by an Arabic-dubbed version last week. An Egyptian-American Coptic Christian activist named Morris Sadek wrote about the trailer in a blog and an email newsletter, describing it as “the latest publicity stunt of the Florida pastor Terry Jones,” who set off riots in Afghanistan in 2011 when he publicized his burning of a Koran, say Robert Mackey and Liam Stack at The New York Times. Sadek’s blog post was picked up by “Egypt’s sometimes-raucous, often rumor-heavy media,” says Fisher, and incendiary television host Sheikh Khaled Abdalla broadcast the trailer on his show.

And the White House thought that a full fledged grovel would appease the Islamic mobs.

SparkPlug on May 22, 2014 at 7:04 PM

Considering the video had been out for a couple of months this sounds more like a pre-arranged cover-up being executed than anything else.

Who would have the authority to actually go to YT about the video on their lonesome without authorization from Obama?

That Obama wasn’t there and this was done indicates it being a pre-arranged cover – and that it was done DURING the attack indicates that as well.

This sounds less like a terror attack and more like a hit job with cover story in the can and ready to deploy.

I recall the press, on learning of the video, reported there were only a couple thousand YouTube hits (which could be generated by anyone with a mission to do so). Had the video been denounced in the mosques it would have gone viral. The story did not add up then or now.

IMHO, the handlers needed a video that was not well known, so it could be used, when needed to generate crowd scenes. They probably had already researched the arrest/immigration records of the video producers. The guy had outstanding legal issues which made him the perfect pigeon to arrest, when they needed to produce a perp

There wouldn’t even be a messy trial, or a lot of discovery, since he was wanted for something which had already been established in court

IMHO, contacting YouTube was too obvious. It was like the WH wanted to have a ‘paper trail’ for discovery later

The video was not the cause, but it was going to be the alibi

d1carter on May 22, 2014 at 7:35 PM

Allah

Cairo Embassy issued their statement at 6:15 AM Eastern.

They knew – months in advance – the protest was coming in Cairo. It had been going on for a fckn year. 9/11/12 was only huge because Zawahiri’s brother had joined withh Rahman’s sons, and they pulled Brotherhood/Islamic Jihad from all over the area.

Look at the timeline. ..

Form Politifact…

What the Cairo embassy said

According to media reports, the U.S. embassy in Cairo released a statement at 6:17 a.m. East Coast time on Sept. 11, 2012, amid growing anger in Egypt about an obscure Web video with a highly negative portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad — a video that, given past experiences with depictions of Muhammad, seemed likely to spark protests.

The statement condemned the video:

“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”

About four hours later, crowds began to form and over the next several hours, the protesters stormed the embassy compound, destroyed a U.S. flag and replaced it with an Islamic flag. About three hours later, according to the Washington Examiner, the embassy tweeted, “This morning’s condemnation (issued before protest began) still stands. As does our condemnation of unjustified breach of the Embassy.” (This tweet has disappeared from the Embassy Twitter feed.)

That night in Libya, militants attacked U.S. facilities in Benghazi, eventually killing the four diplomats. The news of the deaths was not announced by the U.S. government until after 7:00 a.m. East Coast time on Sept. 12.

It was Friday. Every Friday after prayers, The Rahman’s held a protest. They knew the protest was coming, and they knew this one was going to be big because they had been working on it for three fckin months with Zawahiri.

The Admin needed an excuse as to why Cairo was going ballistic. So what do they say?

1. It’s the 9/11 Anniversary?

2. It’s Zawahiri’s Brother?

3. It’s Rahman’s sons, who have been doing this since Morsi was elected?

NO. All of that defies “Al-Qaeda is on the run”.

Here’s the real big question.

The movie was on YouTube since July. No one noticed.

Then, one week before 9/11/12 someone dubbed it into Arabic and sent it out into the jihdai world. Then it aired on Egyptian TV on 9/9/12. It then disappears after 9/11/12.

No one knows who dubbed it.

Terry Jones had no idea about the video until he was contacted by the NYT and called “a producer”. He then took credit, then disavowed being involved.

Who dubbed it? Who passed it along to Egyptian TV? Who said Jones was involved?

Only one of two groups – The Admin/State/CIA or The Brotherhood.

Everything that occurred after 9/11/12 was reaction to the North African reaction. Whoever did it, got the global response it was after.

I’ve explained this ad nauseum, but apparently I don’t have the right kewl creds…even though I’ve got more direct connections to the region than just about any stateside blogger. The people in Egypt know wtf really went down. They’re used to being played by Deep State.

budfox on May 22, 2014 at 7:38 PM

budfox on May 22, 2014 at 7:38 PM

Pre-meditated alibi creation is what that timeline implies.

In that case it is WH operatives AND the MB working together so that there is a cover for the attacks. The one in Egypt lays a groundwork so that the targeting of Stevens can be discounted with the canned alibi, created for just this purpose.

As I’ve said before, there are lots of questions to answer before you even get to the cover-up… and that they will answer what the cover-up is really covering up.

Stevens had become inconvenient and knew too much.

That alone explains all the rest of the events before and after the attack.

ajacksonian on May 22, 2014 at 7:53 PM

redguy on May 22, 2014 at 6:59 PM

You’re onto it. There’s a whole lot more to Nakoula “Sam” Bacile Nakoula, the video maker, than meets the eye. Including lots of other alias, his partnership with an Islamist terrorist financier, and apparent cover by the Feds dating back to the Clinton Administration.

While we’ve all been bemoaning the fact that this poor innocent (okay, parole-violating) was remanded to prison as a scapegoat by the Obama regime, we’ve been overlooking the possibility that this was actually to prevent anyone from talking to him– about his complicity in having a convenient scapegoat video ready for… whenever DOS and Hillary! needed one.

Walid Shoebat also confirms much of what budfox at 7:38 PM above has been saying, too. Read the articles.

de rigueur on May 22, 2014 at 7:54 PM

ajacksonian on May 22, 2014 at 7:53 PM

The video was definitely a pre-mediated alibi and rationale for Muslim incitement to be used as needed. (see 7:45 PM above) Or to be used for Benghazi specifically. Which of the two– the specific or the general– is the interesting question.

de rigueur on May 22, 2014 at 7:58 PM

Remember the video’s TOTAL hits were only in the hundreds when Egyptian government TV, then run by Obama pal and Muslim Brotherhood bro Morsi, on the evening of September 10th. How it came to their attention is the real question.

The Cairo and Tunis demonstrations on the 11th had been planned for weeks; their sole intent was to demand release of the “Blind Sheik” from US prison. There was no demonstration planned or called for in Benghazi: there was no embassy there, and the consulate wasn’t open.

But our Cairo embassy was quick to blame the protests on the video. Do they watch Egyptian TV? Very fast on the draw there.

I think the whole scenario with the video was set up to make the demonstrations look spontaneous instead of al-Qaeda-sponsored, since Obama had just made his big “bin Laden is dead and GM is alive” pitch at the convention. Benghazi was a surprise to them, but they went with the defense already loaded.

Smuggling arms to Al Qaeda-related terrorists in Syria. Because Obama was two months out from an election where he claimed Al Qaeda was on the run.

It also resembles the Iran-Contra funding of rebels in Nicaragua by a Republican administration, which the Democratics at the time thought was a real scandal. One of the issues there was misappropriation of Congressional funding, which some claimed was to the extent to be an impeachable offense.

Under a Democratic president, not so much.

I also believe that the attack on the consulate was sponsored by a foreign government and Barry’s administration wants to cover that up.

Question 1: Is the video maker still in jail?

Question 2: Is there only one video of that type on YouTube?

Question 3: Was the person referred to in the statement Mr. Stevens or someone else?

Question 4: Why did they contact YouTube instead of someone to go in and try to rescue them? Even if they got the video taken down, that wouldn’t have suddenly made the “protesters” happy.

The video actors are on record stating that the “finished” video is nothing like the script they shot (okay, that wouldn’t be a first), and that their dialogue was completely rewritten and ADRed by other actors in post. Apparently rewritten and redubbed yet again in Arabic.

The history of the video’s upload to YouTube is also… interesting… Before “innocence of the Muslims” was uploaded onto “Sam Bacile”‘s YouTube channel by Nakoula’s son for good old dad, who may or may not be the real Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, Sam’s page had a “Like” link to an interview in Arabic of a London woman who had converted to Islam. Odd “Like” for an anti-Muslim video satirist to link, no? That link had been scrubbed by the time Obama and Hillary were pointing fingers at “Innocence.”

Question 1: Is the video maker still in jail?

No. He was released last September. Good luck ever finding him again. Did you know he was an FBI informant, has impersonated an Israeli Jew and a Coptic Christian (which really makes the answer to your next question interesting)?

Question 2: Is there only one video of that type on YouTube?

Only one of that type made by that “filmmaker,” who, interestingly enough, in the course of an interview with Sawa (Arab radio) announced that he planned to make similar “films” lampooning Christianity and Judaism. The Sawa interview is no longer available on

Question 3: Was the person referred to in the statement Mr. Stevens or someone else?

Question 4: Why did they contact YouTube instead of someone to go in and try to rescue them? Even if they got the video taken down, that wouldn’t have suddenly made the “protesters” happy.

You are likely correct.

Remember the protests against the Mohammed cartoons? Danish flags were suddenly being burned in the streets, despite the fact that Danish flags are not exactly a common commodity in that part of the world. The cartoons had been out for months, then all of a sudden there were “spontaneous” demonstrations everywhere in the Arab world.

“Spontaneous” demonstrations like this just don’t happen in that part of the globe. They are planned. It was pretty obvious to me that the outrage over the video (which had been on the internet for months, before the “spontaneous” demonstrations) was a calculated part of the attack.

Here comes the Stupid Party.

K.I.S.S. ….

Republicans always have good causes to take up when it comes to government malfeasance, but they never seem to be able to boil it down where someone watching “Keeping up with the Kardashians” or “Dancing with the Stars” will actually take notice.

The news media will be more than happy to report every little detail about this (times emails were sent, down to the second, on Eastern Time vs. Benghazi time, IP addresses of the sender and the recipient, etc. etc.) to make sure nobody keeps up with it.

Darrell Issa: E-mail shows White House contacted YouTube during Benghazi attack about Mohammed movie

Dear Darrell and Trey,

I guess I have to agree with Ms. Clinton on any importance concerning why the consulate was attacked. It just does not matter. What matters is the response of the Obama administration when it first learned of the attack, the actions taken throughout the evening with particular emphasis on the decision to not attempt a rescue or even to secure what was left of the property for more than 2 weeks, and to gather testimony from those who where there and escaped alive.

These are the issues that concern the populace. It is quite clear that this administration does not know much about anything happening outside of the WH or the several vacation homes and golf courses, which seem to consume an inordinate amount of presidential time and are regarded as a priority.

Incompetence is not an excuse. While there may not be a conspiracy to deceive the people, there is no question of the total, public, and dangerous incompetence at the highest levels of the Executive branch.

That should be the focus of any investigation, and applies to virtually every action the president has taken in the 5 years or so.

Riddle me this, which is how I thought it a lie….

How did spontaneous protesters set up mortar/mortars with base plates and hit the 2 SEALS ?

They were painting the mortars in IR. Did they have IR too?

Lucky shot?

Pre-sighted targets?

Spontaneous artillary spotters with comm capability? “drop 10, right 5″?

Seriously,, how did that happen?

wolly4321 on May 22, 2014 at 9:41 PM

why was it still there three days later after information had begun flowing in that a jihadi group was behind the whole thing?

Because it fit the official story that Al Qaeda was on the run?

There Goes the Neighborhood on May 22, 2014 at 9:43 PM

How did the mortar round find them?

By accident?

They were SEALS. Operating with SEAL gear.

Full kit, obviously. IR laser designators?

They thought they needed them. They used them.

They were in Benghazi. They knew the tactical situation as well as the locals. The buildings, all of it.

wolly4321 on May 22, 2014 at 9:52 PM

What I’m saying is I think that what we know about what went down on the ground alone dispenses of the notion alone of spontanaity.

And if I know that,, they should have too.

Especially with SEALS on the ground.

They had laser designators,,,

AND THEY DIDN’T HAVE COMM GEAR?

Sorry,, I don’t buy that.

It’s all A LIE.

wolly4321 on May 22, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Considering the video had been out for a couple of months this sounds more like a pre-arranged cover-up being executed than anything else.

Who would have the authority to actually go to YT about the video on their lonesome without authorization from Obama?

That Obama wasn’t there and this was done indicates it being a pre-arranged cover – and that it was done DURING the attack indicates that as well.

This sounds less like a terror attack and more like a hit job with cover story in the can and ready to deploy.

ajacksonian on May 22, 2014 at 7:07 PM

This.

Or, they were expecting an attack. They were too cheap to take appropriate action such as moving assets out of harm’s way or stepping up defense, but they got a cover story good and ready to go.

Revolting.

He’s been focussed like a laser on it since he took office the first and second time and he will pivot to it regularly and no one will be madder than Obama when he reads the unemployment numbers in the paper.

A drone was in the air. Pretty sure they see IR.

You can’t convince me they don’t know exactly what happened.

And it isn’t even close to this BS.

Why would you send SEALS with IR with no ability to see it?

They were there, with that gear. In that place.

It wasn’t Tripoli. It wasn’t the Embassy.

Hi all. I rarely (never?) post, but this screams out for comment. Forgive me if I am repeating a point made earlier as I have not read all of the prior comments.

I think the White House (or Hillary; pick your poison) purposely made this inquiry of YouTube for the express purpose of laying down cover for their later position. Got them on the record that a video, any video existed.

Gotta hand it to their political CYA skills—while Americans were dying.
