Video: McCaskill relies on long-debunked claims to dismiss Benghazi probe

posted at 12:41 pm on May 19, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Democrats have gone on the offensive to push back against the House select committee probe of Benghazi and the failed Arab Spring policy in Libya, but instead they keep reminding us of why it’s needed. For instance, if even a sitting Senator is so ill-informed that she’s pushing arguments that have been long debunked — such as the claim that the consulate in Benghazi couldn’t get security because of Republican budget cuts — then Claire McCaskill is the poster girl for the need for a unitary and comprehensive probe into the attack:

DAVID GREGORY: As you look at Secretary of State Clinton, how she handled some of the questions that have emerged about Benghazi, or even about her health that, as you know, are a question for any candidate, do you think she could have done better? Should she do more to be completely transparent?

SEN. CLAIRE MCCASKILL: Listen, this is a strong, smart leader who is going to be a terrific president. And I don’t care what Reince Priebus says. They do not want Hillary Clinton, because they know she is going to ignite a spark of enthusiasm across this country, and she has got the strongest résumé for president of anyone who’s run in a very long time.

So I really think she’s answered all of the questions about Benghazi. She’s the one who called for an independent investigation. And of course her frustration, when she said it doesn’t matter, was because she wants to make sure this doesn’t happen again. And it was the Republicans that were blocking funding for embassy security. That’s why she was frustrated.

DAVID GREGORY: Senator, you’re an interesting figure politically with regards to the Clintons. Back in 2006, you told my colleague, Jeffrey Goldberg, then in The New Yorker, this: “Hillary Clinton is a sensitive subject for McCaskill. She has told people in Missouri and in Washington that a ticket led by Clinton would be fatal for Democrats on the ballot,” because you didn’t think back then that she could win Missouri.

You came out with two other prominent women at the time to endorse Barack Obama at the same time that Hillary Clinton could have made history back in 2008. And yet now, you were one of the first people to endorse her. What has changed over this arc of time that makes her so formidable in your mind now when she wasn’t before?

SEN. CLAIRE MCCASKILL: Well, I think she was formidable then. It was just a very tough choice. We had two amazing candidates. And it was a difficult primary for our party because they were both so extraordinary. Now she has the experience of secretary of state. I think she has enhanced her résumé. She’s learned so much about how you win these campaigns. She knows how to ignore all the cheap shots and stay focused on the American people and the opportunity that everybody deserves. So I just think it’s her time. And I’m excited to try to be a part of it.

Gabriel Malor spent this morning shaking his head at AoSHQ over the resurfacing of the old funding canard:

[C]ontrary to Sen. McCaskill’s claim yesterday, Clinton didn’t say anything about embassy security funding when she dismissed concerns about contradictory administration statements about Benghazi.

Finally, and most seriously, it is untrue that Republicans blocked funding for embassy security. Here’s Politifact debunking the same myth repeated a few weeks ago on Ronan Farrow’s MSNBC show:

Congress did not fully fund embassy security requests from the Obama administration in recent years, which is what Farrow argues amounts to a “cut.” But funding for embassy security is up from 2008, and up dramatically since before 9/11.

How does this tie into the Benghazi attack? State Department officials and government experts lay more blame on decisions by upper management not to provide the temporary Benghazi facility with more officers and better protections than the availability of money.

Farrow made that very point in his segment, which makes it odd that he led his segment by tying the attack with insufficient congressional funding.

We rate his claim Mostly False.

The testimony from other hearings put this bogus explanation to rest more than a year ago. In fact, the Obama administration itself debunked this claim a month after the attack in Benghazi, as Eli Lake noted at the time. McCaskill’s colleague Barbara Boxer tried using this canard a full year ago, and got roundly criticized for it. Darrell Issa noted at the time that the State Department had been sitting on $2.2 billion in facility funding, which could easily have gone to better security.

If Democrats like McCaskill are still this misinformed more than a year and a half after the attack, it’s incumbent on Congress to produce a comprehensive investigation and conclusion as to how we left a consulate practically undefended in a terrorist-infested failed state on the anniversary of 9/11, and were so unprepared that we couldn’t respond when attacked. Four Americans died in that attack, and their survivors deserve better than the misinformation that some in the political class insist on spreading.

Meh. Barky does that all the time – he loves to cite global warming “facts” right after they’ve been shown to be fraudulent or incorrect – and he gets away with it. In fact, Barky has been pushing economy-killing regulations with nothing but BS … and being allowed to do it.

As to benghazi, barky and his junta have been lying every which way about that, from beginning to now. He danced on the coffins of the dead while lying about everything and then lied about what he lied about while dancing on the coffins. His 2012 campaign was nothing but a fistful of lies – which Mittens did little about and the Vichy GOP in the House did NOTHING about.

Color me unimpressed that dems are still using the same lies they have been getting away with for years. They’ll get away with them today … and tomorrow and on and on.

The so-called ‘cuts’ didn’t keep the State Department from spending $700 thousand on landscaping for the palatial Ambassador’s residence in Belgium during the ‘sequester’ amid claims that the ‘sequester’ would hurt embassy security.

Washington DC finds a way to fund their priorities. Too bad the security of the Ambassador in Libya wasn’t a priority sufficient to outweigh funding landscaping in Belgium.

Exactly. Akin basically invented a whole new line of attacks for Democrats to make against Republicans.

J.S.K. on May 19, 2014 at 2:36 PM

And it was the Republicans that were blocking funding for embassy security.

If the Dept. of State didn’t have enough money for embassy security, they should have figured out what to prioritize and what not to prioritize. “Let’s see, we have a consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that’s going to need a lot of security. The consulate in Halifax, Canada, we can probably cut back on security there.”

Unfortunately, this administration is not that great at prioritizing spending, by which I mean that they have no interest in it at all. Remember the government shutdown, when they decided to devote their efforts to putting up barricades around open-air monuments that are normally open 24 hours a day with no entry barriers?

Got that? Testimony from a tool of Obama and Clinton, under oath and directly on point, isn’t relevant.

It’s obvious that Democrats, Leftist tools and Obama bots have completely ignored the facts that have leaked out of Obama’s Cone Of Silence over Benghazi. Like McCaskill’s, their willful ignorance of the facts is nearly complete.

But simply refusing to accept the facts when confronted with them? That’s weapons grade denial. That is mental illness, straight up.

No doubt the media blackout on all things Benghazi makes it easier for these scum.

Unfortunately for them, the time when the MSM could effectively embargo news that doesn’t fit their stinking narrative is long past.

Conservative talk radio has become borderline unlistenable. Ratings have plummeted on many talk stations nationwide, and the listening audience is aging at an alarming rate. Rush is clearly on the downside of what has been a good, long run, and the success of the format is tied directly to him.

As long as conservatives keep preaching this groupthink about a mythical low-information voter block, they will not win anything. Pure and simple.

As a Democrat I say get over it. Nobody cares anymore. I’m fully aware of what happened. The state department screwed up and people died because of it. Then because it was an election year, Obama tried to cover it up and got caught. As the saying goes, it’s not the crime, it’s the cover up that gets you. During the election year Obama looked bad, and it probably costs him a couple of votes. By and large I think the American people understand what happened and really don’t care. Unless the Republicans can produce evidence that Obama personally knew Americans were going to die and did nothing then I really think these hearings are a grand waste of time. Think about it, why would Obama, during an election year no doubt, put himself in a position to get embarrassed on purpose? No president is perfect, and if were being frank, Bush screw-ups costs a lot more lives than Obama’s ever did. Let it go Republicans.

If it was not their father or brother who was slaughtered by a mob of Islamist thugs, they don’t care. If their favorite news anchor does not tell them they should care, they don’t care. If getting interested in the Benghazi tragedy is going to require them to think about something bigger than their own day-to-day desires, they don’t care. If Hillary Clinton says “What difference does it make?” they agree, because they don’t care. After all, if the Secretary of State and President don’t care, why should they? This is what America has become in the 237 years since our Founders risked their lives, property, and sacred honor to build what Ronald Reagan called that “shining city on a hill.” If our Founders could see us now, they would weep.
Public apathy toward Benghazi is an even bigger tragedy than the event itself.

Wrong crowd to hang out with….don’t you think?

How are you folks missing the climactic battle between the federalist militias and regular army vs ansar al sharia in Benghazi right now? This should be the #1 story.

I thought it was very professional of David Gregory to point out the misinformation that was being spread by McCaskill.

Oh, wait . . .

If you think that McCaskill was simply misinformed or confused, think again. She was intentionally repeating a zombie lie.

God knows…

I’ve tried to vote McCaskill out every chance I had and I vow to try again and again if needed (which I doubt)

All you need to know about Claire McCaskill is that she supported Todd Akin in the GOP Primary in 2012.

Good girl Claire, now go back to sleep. We’ll wake you when the hearings start.

Hillary Clinton spoke to the parents of the four men killed in Benghazi. She told them that the attack had been a “spontaneous-reaction” to a video-tape. She also said that the man who had made this tape would be “taken care of.” This man was arrested and imprisoned for over a year. Now the American public has found out that the attack on the American-compound in Benghazi was made by known terrorist’s. Some of the leaders are Al Qaeda members. As everyone knows Am. Stevens tried multiple times to get Hillary Clinton to provide adequate security. She failed to do so. Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton made up this video-tape “fairy tale” to cover over their total lack of leadership. What we see now is a total fragmentation of their “Foreign-Policy.” Plus their total lack of adequate leadership while this terrorist-attack was taking place on the screen in front of them.
