Report: Obama transition team was warned about unreliable wait times at VA in 2008

posted at 2:01 pm on May 19, 2014 by Allahpundit

Great news for the White House, no? Sure, it shows they knowingly left sick and injured vets to languish in a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare. In a sane world, that would be the last straw in sending Shinseki packing. But it also lets O share blame with the Bush administration, one of his favorite methods of damage control. There are three steps in Hopenchange crisis management: (1) they profess to be “mad as hell”; (2) they accept a resignation/announce the retirement/place on “administrative leave” some relatively low-ranking officials; (3) as time wears on and media interest fades, they pronounce the whole thing a phony scandal. Their problem with the VA mess is that, no matter how long it drags out, they don’t dare pronounce this one “phony”; they can laugh at “#Benghazi” but they won’t laugh at wounded troops. So they need a Plan B for defusing the crisis, which, in this case, will be to claim that it’s another problem they’ve inherited from Bush. For, er, five and a half years.

Veterans Affairs officials warned the Obama-Biden transition team in the weeks after the 2008 presidential election that the department shouldn’t trust the wait times that its facilities were reporting.

“This is not only a data integrity issue in which [Veterans Health Administration] reports unreliable performance data; it affects quality of care by delaying — and potentially denying — deserving veterans timely care,” the officials wrote…

In particular, the 2008 transition report referred to a VA inspector general recommendation to test the accuracy of reported waiting times…

“Audits of outpatient scheduling and patient waiting times completed since 2005 have identified noncompliance with the policies and procedures for scheduling, inaccurate reporting of patient waiting times and errors in [electronic waiting lists],” the briefing papers state…

The briefing materials do not reveal any concerns about outright fraud in manipulating waiting times, but they make repeated references in summarizing past audits and reviews about data accuracy.

The briefing report also noted that not a single one of the nine recommendations made by the VA inspector general between 2005 and 2007 to improve scheduling practices had been implemented under Bush by 2008, further evidence of what the commander of the American Legion described as a “systematic lack of accountability.” The question for congressional investigators is when, precisely, inaccurate and unreliable data at the VA bled over into out-and-out book-cooking by administrators to hide the full extent of wait times. Did that begin under Obama or did this metastasize from incompetence and under-resourced bureaucracy into full-blown corruption under Bush as well, replete with whistleblowers being suspended for objecting — and then reinstated on condition that they stop blowing the whistle?

Here’s Drew Griffin of CNN reminding the public that not only has the problem of long waits for veterans been common knowledge on the Hill for a good 10 years, Senator Barack Obama promised the VFW in 2007 that he was going to work hard to reduce them. Click the image to watch.

But we’re going to get the same corrupt runaround we always get.

The scumhag in Phoenix is on paid leave now, your taxes pay for her time off, and she received a bonus of $9,000 for just last year.

I don’t think anyone would argue, certainly not anyone in the system, that the VA was not a model of efficiency prior to the arrival of our rat-eared messiah. However, the current administration has been yammering on for five and half years about how much they’ve improved the VA and what a wonderful job Eric “bite me” Shinseki has done in reducing wait times and improving the care to vets. Unlike Benghazi, where a timeline is necessary, the VA scandal really boils down to how many facilities were cooking the books and how high up the knowledge of this went. Given the number and location of the known cased of fraud, the “how high up” clearly is going to be found somewhere on Vermont Ave in Washington DC.

Shinseki must go.

Not yet. That’s phase is a couple of months away.

We’re in the first phase which is when Obama is going to feign outrage while distancing himself as the guy in charge of the federal government. We’ll hear some Bush blaming. We’ll probably hear a call for more government “solutions” to fix healthcare.

Push back from the GOP will be called – by Obama and the media – as politicizing this outrageously outrageous scandal.

Carney will then refuse to comment when uncomfortable questions arise because the matter is “under investigation”.

A month or so later when Carney begins sneering at reporters for asking questions on this topic is when we’ve finally reached the “fake scandal” phase (with no word on how that “investigation” went).

This is one of the things that pisses me off about the rat-eared wonder. Stuff like this, the IRS snooping, or Benghazi and they declare that it would be imprudent to discuss the matter until all the facts are known…blah..blah..blah.

But- Some slut gets rebuked by Rush Limbaugh, some semi-educated football player comes out as gay, a steet thug gets killed attacking a “white Hispanic in Florida, or a racist friend gets irked by being treated like any other citizen. Well, the rat-eared wonder is more than happy to comment without all the facts are known. But when Obama’s own administration gets caught killing dozens of veterans by neglect even as millions are handed out in bonuses for good performance…… the White House has no comment.

Carney actually knows of no less than three different agencies known as the VA.

Bush or Obama? It doesn’t matter. This is a subject over which there cannot be much disagreement between the parties, keep our promises to our veterans.

The govt cannot do a job of this complexity. And they will screw up more of healthcare going forward with OCare too.

This is terrible.

Exhibit 1 in why the federal govt should be stripped and defunded from doing most of the activities they currently perform.

Tepid support for Shinseki.

You know what they think of him in Japan.

If you like your VA waiting time reports, you can keep your VA waiting time reports. Period.

This should be, if you like honesty from your government you can keep your honesty. Period.

Oh, wait I guess that IS pretty accurate from this Regime. They want nothing to do with honesty in this Regime.

So a few old white guys committed suicide because they couldn’t get help, it’s not like single payer would ever result in such a thing.

Read a math book sometime, bigots.
