Report: Karl Rove suggests Hillary fall might have caused brain injury

posted at 10:01 pm on May 12, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

This is just breaking, so I thought I’d serve it up for y’all:

Onstage with Robert Gibbs and CBS correspondent and “Spies Against Armageddon” co-author Dan Raviv, Rove said Republicans should keep the Benghazi issue alive.

He said if Clinton runs for president, voters must be told what happened when she suffered a fall in December 2012.

The official diagnosis was a blood clot. Rove told the conference near LA Thursday, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.”

I know everyone’s going to be in a tizzy of righteous indignation over this, and Rove sounds rather blunter about it than I’d be. But the fall was serious, her disappearance lengthy, and information about her condition not exactly readily available. There would be questions about it just as there were always questions about McCain’s health, right? I suppose those questions are seen as unseemly, but I’m not sure they’re out of bounds.

If a GOP geezer were stumbling around, falling to the point of requiring a lengthy hospitalization, and wearing special glasses for double vision, his or her presidential ambitions would be dead in the water as the media would be mocking him/her on the age/fitness for office issue mercilessly. Get used to it Killery. Your health is an issue.

Liberalism is a mental illness so how could we tell she had a brain injury? Inquiries won’t do any good as no one will give out any true information anyway. Vote against her because she is a Democrat, Karl. We already know she is nuts.

if she dies, or is incapacitated during the campaign, will the democrats still run her for election? Kind of like Weekend at Bernies?

This is a serious question. Does a candidate have to have a medical checkup to see if she is alive in order to run, or to take the office? Could the swearing in be done by a ventriloquist? I mean, what are the legal standards here?

If you have a stroke, you typically have a clot, then fall, then have brain damage, and speech problems.

We know that she fell, and had a clot. We also know that she had trouble speaking afterwards.

This plants a seed in the minds of voters that cant be unheard.

Good move, Rove. It’s about time that you attacked the enemy.

As ludicrous as it may seem, he has a valid point on this one. Hilary is in her late sixties. She’s a post-menopausal female. With recorded history of being something of party animal during her time as SOS. Alcohol consumption, along with other factors, can contribute to a higher risk of stroke for post-menopausal females.

A blood clot could have the same symptoms as a TIA, except perhaps more pronounced.

lineholder on May 12, 2014 at 10:44 PM

HugoDrax on May 12, 2014 at 10:16 PM

If you really are serious…

As far as I can figure out, the electors have to vote for a “person”. If the candidate has died by the time the electors cast their ballots, I presume they would have to vote for someone else (if their state law allows them to), or throw the election into the House.

If the President-elect dies before taking office, the Vice President-elect becomes President per the 20th Amendment.

McCain will tell us it’s not an issue, even though he was killed for it and by proxy, made Palin an even easier target.

budfox on May 13, 2014 at 12:03 AM

The clot is in the transverse sinus, a large vein that goes around the inner wall of the skull at the back of the head. Her clot is on the right side; there is a similar sinus on the left.

The condition can cause permanent brain damage, coma or death if not detected and treated in time. In Clinton’s case, however, it appears to have caused few if any symptoms and to be responding to treatment with blood-thinning drugs.

Almost three weeks ago, Clinton, who is 65, reportedly became severely dehydrated with an intestinal infection. She fainted, fell and hit her head, suffering a concussion. Whether those events are related to the blood clot is unknown, with experts offering divergent opinions.

Cerebral venous thrombosis — the general term for Clinton’s condition — is rare. It occurs in about four out of every million adults per year. It is somewhat more common in children. Head trauma, pregnancy, cancer, brain infection, autoimmune diseases and inborn clotting abnormalities are all predisposing factors. Some experts believe severe dehydration may be as well.

Clinton has had at least one previous blood clot, in her right leg in 1998. She was treated with blood-thinning drugs for several months. In her memoir she attributed the clot to “my nonstop flying around the country.” Airplane flights lasting longer than six hours appear to be a slight risk factor for developing leg clots, known as deep venous thromboses (DVTs).

From Health and Science in 2012

Rove is right on this one. Hillary’s got a history of clotting and it’s not been revealed if she’s got a gene mutation or something else predisposing her to it. She needs to come clean on this if she runs for the presidency. She had venous clots, tho, different than the arterial clots and bleeds from atherosclerosis and sneurysms like FDR and Woodrow Wilson had. Hillary right now has something similar to what Dan Quayle had.

Nothing about the Clintons is straightforward, is it?

They are both serial liars and there is no subject they cannot make up stories over – even their own personal health.

BoxHead1 on May 13, 2014 at 12:41 AM

Bill Clinton already set the stage here. He was the first major party nominee to refuse to release his full medical records. That he got away with means every else does, too, from then on. Especially if they are Democrats.

Bill got to keep his VD secret, Obama got to keep his drug use secret, Hillary gets to keep her brain injury secret.

But this is really just Rove’s answer to Rand Paul bringing up the Clinton scandals. “I’ll see your sexual harassment charges, and raise you a heavy blow to the head!”

Schadenfreude on May 13, 2014 at 12:45 AM

To be clear, the tradition of releasing medical records only began with Truman. But a major reason it came to be important was that two Presidents had kept their medical conditions secret, including when they interfered with their ability to do the job. Wilson and FDR had effectively lied to the people.

Kennedy disclosed, but the records were doctored, as we found out later, to omit any reference to his Addison’s Disease.
