Tom Cotton on Benghazi fundraising: Where was this outrage when Democrats fundraised off the Iraq war?

posted at 11:21 am on May 9, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via the Free Beacon, a valiant attempt to shame Democrats and their media friends into dropping their outrageously outrageous outrage about Republicans using the new Benghazi committee to raise dough. Valiant but futile, that is: Read today’s New York Times editorial on the committee and tell me how it differs from something Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s office might put out. The left’s narrative on the committee is straightforward and unified — everything about it is illegitimate, from the GOP tilt of the membership (seven Republicans, five Democrats) to the pre-midterm timing to, yes, the sort of cash grab that Democrats engaged in themselves vis-a-vis Iraq. Any argument they can find to discourage the public from paying attention is an argument worth using. You’re not going to shame them out of that.

That being so, how much is Benghazi fundraising really worth to the GOP? Trey Gowdy thinks the party should lay off lest the committee come to be seen as some sort of political commercial. Republicans aren’t listening to him but they should. If they’re serious about the investigation, protecting its legitimacy is job one. And let’s face it, they’re going to reap political benefits from it whether they ask for them overtly or not. Money will come in and, more importantly, conservatives will turn out in November irrespective of whether a Benghazi envelope from the RNC shows up at the door. The more frantic the fundraising gets, the easier it’ll be for Dems to write Gowdy and his project off as a joke.

Fake outrage, fake President…

PatriotRider on May 9, 2014 at 11:24 AM

Pointing out the fact that democrats are illogical, devoid of character, impervious to shame, hypocritical, and that their worldview is based on the worst of the human condition(greed, lust, envy) won’t get you anywhere with them. They must be destroyed. Find where they break the law, and then crucify them on it. The attack must be relentless.

The talking points are already out. If a dem does an interview without invoking “kangaroo court” in relation to Benghazi, I will be speechless.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/09/opinion/center-ring-at-the-republican-circus.html

The hottest competition in Washington this week is among House Republicans vying for a seat on the Benghazi kangaroo court, also known as the Select House Committee to Inflate a Tragedy Into a Scandal. Half the House has asked to “serve” on the committee, which is understandable since it’s the perfect opportunity to avoid any real work while waving frantically to right-wing voters stomping their feet in the grandstand.

From the same quoted NYT article.

Four Americans, including the United States ambassador, died in Benghazi, and their deaths have been crassly used by Republicans as a political cudgel, wildly swung in the dark. They have failed to provide proof for any number of conspiracy theories about the administration’s failures, including the particularly ludicrous charge from Representative Darrell Issa that Mrs. Clinton, then the secretary of state, told the Pentagon to “stand down” and not help defend the American compound.

I assume they are referencing this quote from Issa, although I can’t tell because they don’t qualify their statement of fact in the above passage.

“We need to have an answer of when the secretary of defense had assets that he could have begun spinning up. Why there was not one order given to turn on one Department of Defense asset? I have my suspicions, which is Secretary Clinton told Leon [Panetta] to stand down, and we all heard about the stand-down order for two military personnel. That order is undeniable. They were told not to get on — get off the airplane and kind of stand by — and they’re going to characterize it wasn’t stand down. But when we’re done with Benghazi, the real question is, was there a stand-down order to Leon Panetta or did he just not do his job? Was there a stand-down order from the president who said he told them to use their resources and they didn’t use them? Those questions have to be answered.”

Ludicrous? Yes, NYT, but you are the guilty party.

Democrats were doing a happy dance on the floor of the house whenever the death toll in Iraq hit a new milestone. Literally. They stopped all action and giddily lectured about the folly of going into Iraq. That they’re upset over Benghazi makes them hypocrites. But hypocrites that are going to claim this is a illegitimate panel every step of the way.

I remember some pretty awful things that OFA used to fundraiser off of. Hot Air chronicled some of these in posts and headlines. Maybe Allah can comb through some of thes from 2012. I believe OFA was the first group that fundraiser off of Benghazi. I know the Democrats have fundraiser off of the IRS. They fundraised off of Fast and Furious, I believe.

This type of crap is silly. Both sides fundraiser off of everything. For the media to bite on this is absurd.

With that mentioned, Jake Tapper was absurd for taking te bait and asking why the GOP was not so interested in Iraq war intelligence. There were hearings for that. There ended up being a special prosecutor also. Has anyone heard of Vallery Plame or Scooter Libby? Why doesn’t Jake Tapper ask why the Democrats are not as interested in the death of 4 Americans as they were for the leak of a CIA agent’s name?

By the way, all but one of the “candidates” your Democrats ran for President in 2004 fundraised off of the Iraq War, too. The only one who didn’t (who was the eventual “nominee”) defended his pro-Iraq War vote, but hypocritically then ran on his nonexistent “military record” during a war that his Party lost, a war that he and his Party had trashed for decades.

Your entire first paragraph was on-point as to why trying to maintain even an illusion of legitimacy is futile.

I’d prefer that they simply decide what it will take to get to the facts and the truth – and do that. Period. If that means no Democrats on the panel, then so bet – illusions and desires about legitimacy be damned, because in the end, that’s all futile window-dressing.

GET TO THE FACTS – NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. If it’s actually legitimate, appearing to be legitimate won’t matter, because… well, it will never appear to be legitimate so long as the Democrats and the media have a thing to say about it, right? So why bother? Just do the f*cking job in a way that actually best gets it done.

Well, we can all get beyond this if this regime would just answer some simple questions:

1. Why were we still maintaining a diplomatic facility in Benghazi when the British, French, and even the Red Cross had pulled out?
2. What was Ambassador Stevens doing there, on the anniversary of 9/11, when there was adequate security at the main embassy in Tripoli?
3. Why were multiple requests for additional security in Benghazi denied, and who made that decision?
4. Where was Barack Obama during this 8-hour attack?
5. Who gave the order that the military stand down and not go to the assistance of Americans in Benghazi?
6. Why did this regime choose to ignore the intelligence of those on the ground who stated that this was a pre-planned attack by al Qaeda affiliate Ansar al Sharia?
7. Since it doesn’t appear in any intelligence documents, where did the idea originate that this was a “spontaneous protest of an internet video”?

I’m sure there are more, but these are all unanswered questions – and they’re pretty damn important questions. The vast majority of Americans want the truth, unlike you who only wants to protect the precious rear ends of your cult leaders, Obama and Hillary.

Did you even notice the date on the post?

28 May 2013. I’ve gotten to know you a lot better since and probably wouldn’t choose that pic today…

I’m sure that there was a reason that I chose that picture – probably, something along the lines of ‘can’t we all get along?’ and lions can lay down with other lions without killing one another, i.e., the left and the right can disagree, without being disagreeable, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That is the way that I see you today anyway.

I honestly don’t remember, but if you look at many of the pictures, which were all intended to be funny, they aren’t a lot of our ‘best looks.’ I’ve had conservatives complain. Either they didn’t like the picture, didn’t understand the reasoning behind it, or wanted to know why they were left off.

Can’t please all of the people all of the time.

I most certainly can take a joke.
But I still encourage less juvenile humor.

verbaluce on May 9, 2014 at 12:46 PM

Agreed, we need a more highbrow level of humor around here, something that takes a little thought to figure out, like this:

Even Newt Gingrich adopted a weird alien voice when talking about the moon colony. And he married that Martian.

Never gets boring.
For the record, Obama deserves every bit of scorn he received for making that remark. Inexcusable.

verbaluce on May 9, 2014 at 12:38 PM

You have to admit it comes in handy when the whining starts though.

It only took you 5 years to condemn Dog Eater for what he said, not bad not bad.

Bishop on May 9, 2014 at 12:43 PM

I don’t need you to believe this fact, but I strongly took issue immediately and had many an argument with folks who defended it as ‘no big deal’. That remark was a result of his often too suave and cocky side.

No, I offered something entirely different…

‘I don’t understand. Every single day, I get my a$s handed to me. Make it stop, Mummy, please. It burns.’ – Bayam

I’ve several posts on my blog about Bray-aming-at-the-Moon and they are all (I’m not looking at them, just going on hazy memory) about his braying idiocy.

And that quote for Livefree?

Here’s the quote:

‘Yeah, I’m an ass and I luv me sum, too. Have I ever told you about my May-December man-boy-mance?’ – liveenslavedthendie

I guess that you’ve never heard liveenslavedthendie wax poetically about the much older man, who took advantage of him, along with his virginity, when he was 16.

Tom Cotton on Benghazi fundraising: Where was this outrage when Democrats fundraised off the Iraq war?

The Iraq war was ongoing and the right intended to continue it indefinitely it seemed. Electing more Dems was a method to end the war.

How is that in any way like Benghazi? Benghazi, wait you may want to sit down, is over. Finished. Done. Electing more republicans will do absolutely nothing to alter the event in any way shape or form.

Tlaloc on May 9, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Maybe to keep it from happening again?

Then again electing Dog Eater was supposed to be a way to close Gitmo, revive the economy, create jobs, and end the killing of foreign civilians via drone strikes, and we all know how that turned out.

Bishop on May 9, 2014 at 1:14 PM

So, the democrats are accusing the republicans of politically fundraising off a democrat corruption scandal that revolves around the democrat administration politicizing a terrorist attack that killed 4 Americans by fabricating a bogus story that it was the result of an obscure Youtube video and then spending the last two years trying to cover up the original lie.

That about sums it up. Where do I send some money?

Verby had many long arguments with people about the coarseness of Dog Eater’s remark in regards to mentally or physically handicapped people.

The dueling banjos remark of her’s was in reference to…uh…banjo music played poorly, not the the mental handicap of the boy from that movie. You sir are a bigot.

I agree that this shouldn’t be politicized. If republicans insist on using Benghazi in campaigning it should be of the “if you Democrats are right about this and the Obama administration has nothing to hide, then show us all the evidence” type ads. If they’re certain they’re right then the Republicans will look like idiots. Unless of course they’re wrong and just playing politics themselves and trying to cover for Obama, Clinton and crew.

But I just checked the article (and the video) re. Gowdy’s interview with Tapper, and saw no mention of Gowdy saying Morrell was “not telling the truth”.

He in fact said “I don’t believe him” and “he has a number of his facts wrong.”

Which is why the Idiot your Democrat Party ran for President in 2004 said the following in August of 2004?

wiki:

Kerry said in August 2004 that he would make the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq a goal of his first presidential term. However, he did not offer a deadline or a timetable, and proposed an increase in deployment size in the immediate future. In the debate, he said that he reiterated that withdrawal was a goal, if an initial troop increase works.
