Video: The banality of evil, Gosnell edition

posted at 2:41 pm on May 8, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

The phrase “banality of evil” originated in Hanna Arendt’s unforgettable (and controversial) impression of Adolf Eichmann during his 1963 trial for his activities in the Holocaust. She meant it as a contrast between Eichmann’s stupidity and utter smallness and the scope of his evil, but many others took understandable exception to her characterization — especially given Eichmann’s rather substantial role in implementing the Holocaust.

Today, Aspen Times writer Melanie Sturm applies the term with a little more accuracy to Kermit Gosnell. Sturm contrasts Gosnell’s mass murder and seemingly oblivious nature, while also noting all the people who did nothing despite the many warning signals of his evil:

It’s unimaginable that any side of the reproductive-health debate could tolerate the barbarity of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and his unlicensed staff who preyed on low-income and minority women.

Yet for 31 years, the public’s guardians — regulators, politicians and health care providers — averted their eyes and abandoned their duties, allowing a virtual Mengele to openly and profitably operate an unsanitary, Auschwitz-like health facility in Philadelphia where countless women suffered maiming, infection or worse.

According to the grand jury report that advanced Gosnell’s murder conviction, he “regularly and illegally delivered live, viable babies in the third trimester of pregnancy — and then murdered these newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors,” as did his employees.

The grand jury faulted seemingly indifferent government officials who “literally licensed Gosnell’s criminally dangerous behavior” by refusing “to treat abortion clinics as ambulatory surgical facilities.” Their inaction was action and a reminder that morality is a choice when otherwise ordinary people commit appalling acts, as in Nazi Germany.

I’d add that this analogy suffers on a couple of points — notably, scale and ideology. Gosnell murdered for money and his own sick pleasure, as the horrific trophies found in his office attest. Sturm’s application of Arendt’s observation as well as Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s that “silence in the face of evil is evil” is entirely on point, though, as is her overall condemnation of not just Gosnell but those who allowed him to operate.

In case anyone has forgotten the powerful indictment from the grand jury not just of Gosnell, but of public officials who willingly turned a blind eye to murder, filmmaker Ann McIlhenny gives Hot Air an exclusive first look at her dramatic reading of that part of the report. The video also contains some disturbing images, so click with caution:

Ann and her husband Phelim McAleer and Magda Segieda are nearing the end of their crowdfunding effort to produce a TV movie about Gosnell, “the most prolific serial killer in American history.” They have to hit $2.1 million in order to secure the funding for the Gosnell Movie project, and they’re close — at just over $1.99 million as of the time this post was written. More than 21,000 people have contributed to this project, an amazingly wide donor base for a crowdfunding effort. They only need a little over $100,000 in the next four days in order to succeed.

I’ll interview Ann on today’s TEMS show, which starts at 4 ET this afternoon. Be sure to tune in — and be sure to contribute what you can to GosnellMovie.com, too.

It includes description of the conditions found inside Gosnell’s facility when DEA official entered. There are also some pictures that were taken at the time, some of which include the plastic bags in which dead babies were stored inside Gosnell’s facility.

Not pleasant in the least, but after actually seeing it, then it the reality of neglect by the state officials and other individuals who should have taken action to protect the women in that community becomes that much more marked.

Gosnell isn’t outlier. The condition of his facility may be an outlier, to some extent, but the manner in which he was allowed to continue without oversight…that isn’t an outlier. That goes on all the time in the abortion industry.

the pro-abortion people must be really scared right now =)

they don’t want this movie to be made. when i tried to spread the word about this movie on another site, a pro-abortion person got mad at me and tried to convince me not to support the movie. the abortion supporters know that this movie will make some people think twice about being “pro-choice.” that’s why they are hoping that this movie won’t reach its goal.

This is not an easy subject matter for anyone other than those who have hardened their hearts to the value of life and seek nothing other than blindly supporting abortion.

The value of the life of each of those babies who were murdered…that matters. So does the value of the lives of the mothers.

The left will continue to provide cover for these facilities as long as they can get away from it.

We’re the only hope these women and their babies have.

Someone has to stand in their behalf. If we won’t, who will?

I agree that the term “banality of evil” probably isn’t a good fit for Gosnell. I do think, however, that it accurately describes pro-aborts like Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and pretty much every other Democrat today. Heck, Arendt could have been talking about the phony “pro-choice” language now used to describe the horror of abortion when she wrote the following:

“Clichés, stock phrases, adherence to conventional, standardized codes of expression and conduct have the socially recognized function of protecting us against reality, that is, against the claim on our thinking attention that all events and facts make by virtue of their existence.”

WarEagle01 on May 8, 2014 at 3:25 PM

The media and their newspeak.

Here, let me fix it for them to make them more honest.

It’s unimaginable that any side of the reproductive-health abortion debate could tolerate the barbarity of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and his unlicensed staff who preyed on low-income and minority women.

Yet for 31 years, the public’s guardians — regulators, politicians and health care providers — averted their eyes and abandoned their duties, allowing a virtual Mengele to openly and profitably operate an unsanitary, Auschwitz-like health facility abortion clinic in Philadelphia where countless women suffered maiming, infection or worse.

DethMetalCookieMonst on May 8, 2014 at 3:31 PM

FYI, Democrat candidate for governor Allyson Schwartz owned a women’s health clinic while Gosnell was operating. She has refused to answer questions about whether her clinic referred women to Gosnell. Many suspect it did, since Gosnell was one of the only abortionists known to be willing to do late-term abortions. Most of the women who ended up at Gosnell’s clinic were referred by others who did not want the legal or professional liability of performing late-term abortions. All of those clinic operators are also guilty of causing the deaths of all of these women and the deaths of all the babies born alive.

It’s revolting that now Allyson Schwartz is running for governor, Democrats seeking to replace her in Congress are tripping over themselves to prove they are the most “pro-choice” in the race. Even in the Philadelphia area, the Gosnell horror is not well enough known and those who funneled women to him have not been held accountable. Nor has there been any public discussion about what “pro-choice” really means.

Darn, I’m late. Oh well. I hope no one approves of the sanitary conditions at the clinic. I don’t understand why the patients didn’t report the problem. There is the internet these days. I also find it strange that the pro-life with its fetish about finding out bad behavior by abortion doctors didn’t document what was happening at Gosnell’s clinic earlier. Why was that? I don’t ask in terms of blame. I just don’t quite get it.

I suppose I am required by the rules of the game to say something unacceptable to the pro-life movement. I would guess there could be some reason I would approve of a third trimester abortion, but as a rule it is better to kill a fetus earlier than later for health reasons and to reasonably accommodate the pro-life viewpoint. Also, deadlines focus the mind and make people make whatever decision they are going to make.

Who would they report it to? State regulators who didn’t walk through the clinic doors for 10+ years? Wait, some regulators showed up, saw the conditions, and did nothing. So who would the patients complain to?

I don’t know for sure, but I bet that someone who wasn’t a patient couldn’t just walk through the back rooms willy nilly. And again, who would they complain to?

As happened to Eric Holder’s wife’s tenant, we should focus on closing these clinics down with evidence of Medicare fraud. Lawmakers and police don’t care about dirty abortion clinics. But take government money in large enough quantities and they do care.

Advertising.
Wear the shirt around the mall, people ask what it’s for. Send the postcard to a friend. Show the DVDs to people.
The actual production costs of the perks is amazingly low, so they are not “wasting” money on them. Shipping cost probably is higher than the cost to make the item. DVDs especially are cheap to make, once the film is in the can.

Totally agree with you; just pointing out that the patients had no incentive to turn him in once they exited without significant physical harm (because all of them were harmed just by the abortion, and I bet most in some other physical way, just not enough to overcome the constraints of having been there illegally).
Plus, considering the demographics of the majority of his “patients”, there would have to be a very high value for them in contacting the police or any regulatory agency; absent maiming or death, there is no upside for his clientele in “ratting him out”, as the pro-abortion folk would characterize it.

“Every criminal complaint is acceptable in the first person — our whistle-blowers; it is only in the third person — their stool-pigeons — that it is unacceptable.” — all-purpuse Ben Franklin quote.

Well, the patients who got syphilis from him reusing dirty plastic instruments had a case.

(but now I get your overall point, and I agree with you, too)

It’s unimaginable that any side of the reproductive-health debate could tolerate the barbarity of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and his unlicensed staff who preyed on low-income and minority women.

Oh pish posh – who cares, they’re black!

Well, that’s what Dr. Gosnell said, when he put the white women in a clean room with actual nurses, and the black/non-white women in rooms with blood on the sheets from an earlier procedure.

Dear Supporters

WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!

The Gosnell Movie has raised $2.1m and will be made! We are so incredibly grateful to you for getting us here. It’s been a long road and it was your ongoing support that carried us through.

We are delighted, but not done working just yet! The campaign is open until midnight on Monday the 12th. We’ve got the minimum money we needed, but we would still like more people to join in. So we’re announcing a stretch goal – we want at least 30,000 people to become part of this historic project. They don’t need to donate much, even a dollar will do. And needless to say, all these dollars will go towards hiring better talent to make this movie even greater.

Amazing. Just got the update, too.

And, the donations keep rolling in $100, $25, $50… Simply amazing.

It was sarcasm, cptacek, but it is also the reason nothing was done. Institutionalized racism is alive and well in government as are many other evils.

I am edgy about this, and didn’t recognize you as one to engage in sarcasm. Sorry to be so defensive.
