Video: Confused senior citizen convinced that shadowy villains are manipulating the weather

Via the Corner, a reminder that, along with everything else, the hole in the ozone layer is Emmanuel Goldstein’s fault. The clip’s long but all you really need to watch of this latest Koch binge by Dingy Harry are the first few minutes, where he insists that his least favorite “multizillionaires” are one of the main causes of climate change. True or false? The Free Beacon has an enjoyable “fact check” of that, but I’d add a bit more. Just for starters, note that his source for the shtick about tornadoes in Arkansas at the beginning isn’t a climate scientist but, um, Mark Pryor. There’s a reason for that: Even the White House’s new study of climate change released yesterday admits that “the effect of climate change on the intensity or frequency of tornadoes is uncertain, and scientists are unsure whether climate change has played a role in recent erratic patterns of tornado activity.” From the very start here, he’s pushing conjecture in place of actual science.

As to his chief point, that the Kochs are “one of the main causes” of climate change, it’s certainly true that they’re a big polluter. Lots of industrialists are. According to this “toxic score” ranking of U.S. companies, they had the most “toxic air releases” for the year in question but ranked 14th in their “toxic score.” Safe to call them a “main cause” of climate change globally, then? Before you say yes, eyeball this international ranking of emissions by industrial companies first. Only two of the top 15 are based in the U.S.; the top four are all Chinese and were pumping out massive amounts of carbon as of 2009. The carbon footprint of the dirtiest Chinese company, though, would still account for less than seven percent of the total carbon footprint of the U.S. All of which is to say, if you’re serious about man-made climate change — which Reid, per his grasp of Arkansas tornadoes, is not — and eager to reduce carbon emissions by a meaningful amount, it’s not just goofy but highly counterproductive to go around calling any one company or its owners a “main cause.” The point that serious warmists are forever making is that this is a massive collective action problem, requiring cooperation from every major industry in every industrial country. To present it as something capable of a quick fix, by targeting one key polluter, only makes it harder to muster that collective action; Koch could go out of business tomorrow and barely anything would change. Reid doesn’t care about that, though. This is, as always, simply an opportunity for tinpot demagoguery, giving liberals a boogeyman to vote against this fall. He’s doing his ostensible cause here a great disservice by framing it this way, but whatever. Enjoy this, warmists.

The hedge fund founded and, until recently, run by billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer was involved in a deal to sell a stake in a Russian oil company to a Russian oligarch who is the target of U.S. sanctions.

…Russia’s recent invasion of Crimea demonstrates the necessity of building the Keystone XL pipeline, which Steyer vehemently opposes and is trying to scuttle through massive donations to the Democratic Party.

slickwillie2001 on May 7, 2014 at 3:38 PM

It’s distressing to see those who run the industries that service the needs of the nation, and the population of the planet, vilified for being productive, employing people, and serving definitive needs in the society.

Production with as little impact on the environment as possible is always preferable, as long as it’s cost effective enough that the product remains viable, particularly if that product is a necessity.

However, casting those who run the industries that keep the world ticking along as villains simply for existing is destructive to a healthy society.

“Everyone has to reconcile their own faith with how they interact with others, and that’s a choice you’ve got to make based on your understanding of biblical teachings and based on the best understanding you can come to it,” Cruz said Friday at a Houston Baptist University forum on Faith in the Public Square.

The Tea Party favorite said Christians should not be forced to sell wedding cakes to same-sex couples or photograph their marriage ceremonies, although he personally had no problem doing so — although conceded he was a terrible cook.

“I’m very much a believer that the scripture teaches that you hate the sin and love the sinner, and so, you know, from my perspective I am perfectly willing to interact with anybody,” he said. “Look, I work in the U.S. Congress. But at the same time, I don’t think the law should be forcing Americans to violate their religious faith.”

Cruz offered a pending legal case as an example.

“The Obama administration is litigating against the Little Sisters of the Poor, trying to force them, trying to extract millions of dollars of fines to force them to pay for contraceptives and abortion-providing drugs for others,” he said.

You deniers go ahead and yuck it up – I’m sure Galileo’s detractors cracked jokes too.

The time for talking is over, you people refuse to be swayed by science or facts. President Obama needs to take action now – by Executive Order if needed.

The only way to control carbon-spewing, fossil fuel addicts is through the use of federally rationed carbon credits. Unlike financial wealth, concentrated in the hands of greedy capitalists, the government can ensure all credits are equitably distributed.

Those who demand unnecessary earth-destroying toys, such as fossil-fueled automobiles, big screen tvs, air-conditioning, and guns should have to buy “luxury credits” from the government. This money can then be redistributed to the groups who have victimized for hundreds of years by powerful white exploitation.

VorDaj on May 7, 2014 at 4:10 PM

The fact that Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., manipulated the legislation that eventually gave America Obamacare means that the entire law was adopted unconstitutionally and should be canceled, including its $800 billion in taxes, a federal appeals court is being told.

The case, brought by the Pacific Legal Foundation, is based on the Constitution’s Origination Clause, which requires all tax-raising bills to begin in the U.S. House.

But Obamacare was written in the Senate. Reid simply took an innocuous House bill that already had House approval – which helped veterans get housing – gutted it and replaced its contents with Obamacare.

Laura Castellano on May 7, 2014 at 5:38 PM

Here’s where I’d be willing to compromise with Democrats on climate legislation:

First, they’d have to lay out all of the data for 2014 at the conclusion of the year. Including metrics.

Then, they’d have to predict the same data for 2015, using the same metrics and demonstrate the cost to Americans as a result of the predicted warming. At the same time, they’d need to tell us what the remedy would be.

At the end of 2015, we’d have to look at all the numbers. If they can show that their models were correct and they could actually predict what is in store for us, then we can see if all of those costs materialized and if the remedy would have mitigated them.

If all of that comes true and is shown to be accurate, we can talk about 2017. If not, they need to put it all to rest. Either they’re confident in their numbers and remedies, or they’re just blowing smoke. And just like border security, if they can show we really need to redistribute wealth from the rich to the plutocracy, then we’ll get to that sometime in the future.
