Will: Can we please stop pretending climate scientists are saints in lab coats?

posted at 10:11 pm on May 6, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

In his increasingly meek efforts to not look like a lame duck (as well as to take every available opportunity to portray Republicans as apathetic-yet-spiteful haters of any agenda item he could possibly produce), President Obama is once again turning to that ever-reliable progressive tactic of climate-change alarm-mongering to gin up some noise. The administration released what we’re told is a “major,” “new,” “significant” report on the extravagant perils of living on a planet that doesn’t remain in climate stasis, and yet the report seems suspiciously full of plenty of everything we’ve already heard before (most recently, from the United Nation’s International Panel on Climate Change). For instance, this is MSNBC‘s take on the report’s findings:

Climate change has officially arrived, and it is wreaking havoc across the United States – draining water supplies, throwing off sea levels and affecting the health of millions of Americans, according to a significant new government report.

“Residents of some coastal cities see their streets flood more regularly during storms and high tides. Inland cities near large rivers also experience more flooding, especially in the Midwest and Northeast. Insurance rates are rising in some vulnerable locations, and insurance is no longer available in others. Hotter and drier weather and earlier snow melt mean that wildfires in the West start earlier in the spring, last longer into the fall and burn more acreage,” the U.S. National Climate Assessment report found.

Climate change effects every part of daily life, including major sectors of the economy – the growing season is getting longer, which could be considered a positive effect in the short term, according to the report. But, “our society and its infrastructure were designed for the climate that we have had, not the rapidly changing climate we now have and can expect in the future.”

The report, released Tuesday by the White House, seeks to quantify and illustrate the huge impact climate change has had and will have on the country, from the catastrophic and devastating – rising sea levels threaten millions of homes in coastal communities as hurricanes, wildfires, and other extreme patterns ravage communities – to the subtle but pervasive growth in allergies.

You get the idea, and if you merely accept that climate change has indeed been happening since the dawn of time, and that mindfulness and mitigation may be good ideas but central planning from a global bureaucracy isn’t — instead of faithfully accepting that an utterly earth-smashing disaster is absolutely imminent and that human beings are irrevocably, devastatingly hastening the planet’s natural processes — then you will be called a knuckle-dragging flat-earther/denier. Deal with it.

The best that can be said for the report is that it does endorse some adaptation strategies, and that the White House is still fine with fracking — at least grudgingly acknowledging that natural gas has been the best thing for carbon-emission mitigation in recent history (brought to you by the free market, and not by egregiously subsidized/costly/unreliable wind-and-solar schemes. Sorry.). But, never fear, progressives — I’m sure we can all look forward to the report being used for all kinds of sweet new regulations and executive orders of the next few years. Here are some thoughts from Krauthammer and George Will on that front:

KRAUTHAMMER: Any scientific theory that explains everything, explains nothing, and no matter what happens — in climate, if it’s unpleasant, the word for that is “weather” — is attributed to global warming. I mean, if we continue with global warming up here in the northeast, we’re going to freeze to death. But, the most important element is what McConnell was talking about: The negligible gain. Assume they are right about global warming. Assume that it is all caused by man. The United States has reduced carbon emissions since 2006 more than any other country on earth. We are right now at 1992 levels, according to the IEA, and yet, carbon emissions have gone up globally. Why? We don’t control the emissions of the other 96 percent of humanity, especially China and India. As we dismantle the coal plants in our country, China and India together are adding one coal-fired plant every week. …

WILL: There is however no evidence in the increase of extreme weather. I own a home on an island in South Carolina looking south in the direction of hurricanes, and after Katrina, I was really interested when they said, “This is a harbinger of increased hurricane activity,” which since then has plummeted. Now, Mr. Holden who introduced this report has his own record of very interesting failed forecasts, not to mention Al Gore who, in 2008, said that by 2013 — for those of you keeping score at home, that’s last year — the ice cap in the North Pole would be gone. It’s not. Now, there is, as Charles says, the policy question is how much wealth do we want to spend, directly or in lost production, in order to have no discernible, measurable effect on the climate. … There is a sociology of science. Scientists are not saints in white laboratory smocks. They’ve got interests like everybody else. If you want a tenured position in academia, don’t question the reigning orthodoxy on climate change. If you want money from the biggest source of direct research in this country, the federal government, don’t question its orthodoxy. If you want to get along with you peers, conform to peer pressure. This is what’s happening. … The New Yorker magazine, which is impeccably upset about climate change, recently spoke about the report from the IPCC as “the last word on climate change.” Now, try that phrase, “the last word on microbiology, quantum mechanics, physics, chemistry.” Since when does science come to the end?

The office of about 10 employees is overseen by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy’s office, and the inspector general’s office is accusing it of impeding its independent investigations into employee misconduct, computer security and external threats, including compelling employees involved in cases to sign non-disclosure agreements.

“Under the heavy cloak of ‘national security,’ the Office of Homeland Security has repeatedly rebuffed and refused to cooperate with the OIG’s ongoing requests for information or cooperation,” Sullivan wrote in prepared testimony obtained by The Associated Press. “This block unquestionably has hamstrung the Office of Inspector General’s ability to carry out its statutory mandate to investigate wrongdoing of EPA employees.”

Who cares if they are saints?

If they were the saintliest, smartest, most hard working and most ethical scientists on the planet, that would not change the fact that they (or at least, the alarmists citing their work) are claiming they can make accurate predictions about the behavior of the climate over the next 50-100 years, in relation to carbon emissions, despite having no history of doing this in the past.

That is a fundamentally unscientific claim, period. There is nothing more to say.

d1carter on May 6, 2014 at 10:32 PM

Starting around 1990 in order to get admitted to climatology doctorate programs you had to agree with the politics and “science” of the fear mongering Chicken Littles. What the means it that now the vast majority of current climatologists have been pre-screened to agree, no matter what, with the warmists. And it means that these post 1990 vintage climatologists cannot be considered credible. That’s the sad truth.
Actually the whole truth is even sadder. In 1989 the lead IPCC author and climatologist said this:

“We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.” -Stephen Schneider, lead ipcc author, 1989

Schneider says it’s ok, even good, to lie. No joke. And then in the following years leftist politicians and activists echoed the sentiment of Schneider. For example, Senator Tim Wirth said this is 1993:

“We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing.” -leftist Senator Tim Wirth, 1993

We know that the words of Schneider and Wirth have been heard and internalized by nearly all climatologists, who were for the most part already pre-screened to be receptive to such a message. Yes, climatologists are not saints, and in fact most of them are the opposite, lying and deceiving to try to see their dreamed political agenda enacted.
Regardless, these climatologists cannot be considered trustworthy or credible in any way. They spout propaganda, not science. Period. End of story.

US Coal Exports</a

The U.S. is the world’s fourth-largest source of coal exports in the world, after Australia, Indonesia and Russia (1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively). Unused port capacity on the east coast and major expansions proposed for the west coast mean that U.S. coal exports could rapidly overtake Indonesia and Russia.

China and India expected to remain largest market. Power Development and production.

Asia is expected to remain the largest market for coal-fired generation, primarily driven by China and India, followed by Indonesia and Vietnam. Both China and India face obstacles in developing their domestic coal production fast enough to meet demand. Their growing import requirements propel the expansion and integration of global coal trade.

WILL: There is however no evidence in the increase of extreme weather.

Yeah, and there’s no evidence that CO2 causes temperature change. None. The ipcc claimed that ice core evidence proved this, but a paper came out in 1999 that looked at this ice core evidence with greater granularity and showed that the cause – effect relationship was the exact reverse of what the ipcc maintained. Yes, temperature change causes levels of CO2 to change, but CO2 does NOT cause temperature change. Even the IPCC, in 2003, had to concede this point. That was and is the foundation of the warmist theory. The foundation of the theory is gone. But the warmists survive, on media hype and bs puffery. Of course, I’m sure we’ll have to have more ‘studies’ and require more ‘revenue’ to combat this imminent threat.

You know, the scientific method states that you have a hypothesis and a null hypothesis. Not one scientist has stated a null hypothesis for Global warming, which means that they have no means to state that AGW does not exist. So how do we define normal conditions? Will a scientist come forth and put it in writing? Or do we just take their word for it?

If the science is “settled” perhaps the funding spigot of those scientists should be turned off until they reorient themselves to some unsettled science.

So how do we define normal conditions? Will a scientist come forth and put it in writing? Or do we just take their word for it?

Brock Robamney on May 7, 2014 at 6:00 AM

Normal conditions are set by the climate record of prior inter-glacial periods and using standard measurements for them and then examining the save environments and taking measurements from recent history.

To date no set of measurements have put this inter-glacial period outside the error bars set by prior ones. In fact there is a general characteristic of one final spike in global temps that are then followed by a period of continuous cooling… right to the next ice age. That spike may have happened in the mid-1980′s because it has been all downhill from there.

But then that is set by geologists, not climatologists because geologists study ancient climate and love handing the AGW crowd data sets where there is a known outcome and not telling the AGW people what it is. If you can’t predict the outcome, then your model is wrong. Climatologists stopped bugging geologists for data after they got serious laughter after their predictions from Miocene data sets, a notoriously difficult set of climates to understand and the AGW people got the resulting climates dead wrong on all counts.

You can get the raw data from the surface stations in the US and graph it yourself. You’ll find it doesn’t agree with NASA GISS’s charts, but they’re secretive about their methodology and mysterious about their frequent adjustments to the historical record. They also won’t hand out non-US surface station data. I don’t know why thermometer readings are so hush-hush.

Anthony Watts has documented that most surface stations aren’t in compliance with the guidelines of that network. And GISS only uses a fraction of them, they prefer urban stations to rural.

See that, studied INTENSIVELY. OMG, we must act now!

We need money from daddy Fed Gov so we can continue this important research….the science is settled!

In 2008 our Federal Government spent nearly $70 Billion on studying “settled science”. I can’t find current estimates for 2014 spending but I would guess it might likely be double that at least.

Somebody hook up a generator to Obama – he’s always turning and he’s going faster and faster!

And, he is starting to magically reappear in the news. I have noted many times recently that he had dropped out of sight, replaced by “The White House” or “The government”, when things seemed to be going south everywhere, especially in foreign policy.

But we can’t have that! Obama is using the cudgel of Climate Change to make a reappearance in the daily news, riding a hobby-horse that he has been assured cannot fall over, because the science is settled!

Well stated but lemmings will continue to go over the cliff.

Residents of some coastal cities see their streets flood more regularly during storms and high tides. Inland cities near large rivers also experience more flooding, especially in the Midwest and Northeast.

-they said, without offering any scientific proof.

Front page story in the AZ Republic here in Phoenix says the avg temps here could rise by 9 degrees.

By the end of the century.

The president is scientifically illiterate. All he knows is what he is told, and he doesn’t listen to anything he doesn’t want to hear.

It would be far more productive for the US to sell/give the cleaner technologies that we have developed for fossil fuels than to keep cutting our own for marginal increases. It would be incredible expensive and difficult to make our industries etc. any more cleaner, but truly cheaper and more effective to fix the rest of the world.

But Øbama can’t control that…

Was it Joe Bastardi who said “Climatologists are meteorologists who can’t forecast the weather.”

But then again the 97 percent of scientists who agree on AGW.. most are political scientists.

And of course these so called scientists are paid by the government through grants to be told what government wants to hear, else their grants dry up.

Dasher on May 7, 2014 at 12:05 AM

The dire predictions of the warmists are based on computer models, not empirical data.

The best computer models currently used for weather forecasting are reasonably accurate up to about 5 days into the future, but the actual weather is usually different from what a weather model predicted 10 days earlier. This is due to small-scale phenomena that cannot be taken into account in large-scale models, and these errors accumulate over time. If the time scale is expanded into years or decades, the errors accumulate even more.

Climate models started from baseline data in 1980 or 1990 have predicted warmer climates for the present than the actual measured climate. If a climate model cannot “predict” the past, how can it be trusted to predict the future?

Bad news: 1998 was the warmest year in recent history.

Good news: All years since then were cooler, so we haven’t had any global warming in the last 16 years.

Erika, leftists (dems) are NOT progressive. They are regressive just like their policies. Stop calling them “progressives”. They are also NOT liberals. They are leftists, fascists, socialists, nazis, autocrats, misogynists, racists, and misanthropes. There is nothing progressive or liberal about any of those ideologies.

You’re a smart young woman, please figure it out.

No it wasn’t. The 1930′s had warmer years. The lying alarmists have doctored the records and conveniently destroyed the originals.

Ever see who the 97% really are?

http://www.burtonsys.com/climate/97pct/

The 97% claim comes from a January, 2009 article by Peter T. Doran about an April, 2008 survey by Margaret R. K. Zimmerman of 10,257 Earth Scientists at academic and government institutions, of whom 3146 responded. (A 2010 paper by Wm Anderegg claims the same conclusion, through an equally-flawed methodology.)

The 97% claim is based on the answers to just two questions, both of which were so uncontroversial that even I, and most other climate change skeptics, would answer “yes” to them.

Worse yet, 97.5% of those who responded were excluded after their responses were received. Of 3146 responses received, only 79 responses were considered.

The whole article is an interesting read.

One of the many “squirrel” topics that they’ll use to distract from the ongoing scandals.

Oh, and climate change is affecting the squirrel population too.
