Boehner names Trey Gowdy chairman of Benghazi select committee

posted at 2:41 pm on May 5, 2014 by Allahpundit

He’s got fifteen years of prosecutorial experience at both the federal and state levels. (Fun fact: I was watching an old episode of “Forensic Files” on HLN a week or two ago and who popped up onscreen but a young, dark-haired Trey Gowdy, discussing a murder case he’d won in South Carolina.) He’s also been out in front of the caucus in accusing the White House of Benghazi cover-ups: He’s the man who claimed last summer that they’d been giving CIA agents linked to the incident new identities to hide them from House investigators, and he told Greta Van Susteren just a few days ago that he has evidence that the White House is deliberately withholding documents related to the attack.

Boehner’s statement:

“With four of our countrymen killed at the hands of terrorists, the American people want answers, accountability, and justice. Trey Gowdy is as dogged, focused, and serious-minded as they come. His background as a federal prosecutor and his zeal for the truth make him the ideal person to lead this panel. I know he shares my commitment to get to the bottom of this tragedy and will not tolerate any stonewalling from the Obama administration. I plan to ensure he and his committee have the strongest authority possible to root out all the facts. This is a big job, but Rep. Gowdy has the confidence of this conference, and I know his professionalism and grit will earn him the respect of the American people.”

Smart politics twice over. Part of the reason Boehner agreed to the select committee was to unify the party ahead of the midterms; after Ben Rhodes’s e-mail became public, refusing to form a committee would have been another flashpoint between the party establishment and the grassroots to go along with amnesty and increasingly tepid opposition to ObamaCare. It stands to reason that if you’re going to do something to placate your base, you might as well choose a conservative in good standing for chairman too. If he’d appointed a centrist and the committee came up with nothing, righties would have accused him of a whitewash. They can’t do that with Gowdy in charge, and if Gowdy comes up with nothing too, then Boehner can distance himself from it by saying it was largely a tea-party production all along.

The other reason it’s smart politics is that not only is Gowdy a respected prosecutor, he’s consistently one of the most dynamic members at House hearings. (You’ve watched enough clips of him on this site to know that.) Boehner doesn’t know what he’s going to get by way of evidence but he will insist on some political payoff from this ahead of the midterms, and Gowdy’s just the guy to deliver that. You want clips of John Kerry or Hillary Clinton sweating under a tough cross-examination to dominate the day’s news cycle on cable? He’ll do that for you better than virtually anyone else.

One question, though. Will Democrats participate in the committee? Here’s Adam Schiff telling Chris Wallace yesterday on FNS that he thinks the party should boycott. I hate to admit it but that’s sound strategy. They’re taking a risk in doing it: If the GOP turns up compelling evidence of Obama’s or Hillary’s negligence on the night of the attack, the fact that Democrats refused to take part in the investigation will make them look complicit in the cover-up and whitewash. If the GOP doesn’t turn up something compelling, though, the boycott will make it easier for Democrats to argue that it was a kangaroo court all along that the public should either pay no attention to or actively punish Republicans for organizing. In fact, Dems can cite their boycott as a reason for the public to downplay or ignore any evidence that Gowdy does uncover. E.g., “We knew Republicans would be grossly unfair to the administration and blow their findings out of all proportion. That’s why we didn’t participate.” It’s a way to delegitimize the effort, which is the whole ballgame for them right now.

Go Trey and do us proud.

mrcasella on May 5, 2014 at 2:49 PM

The other downside to not participating for the Dems is it eliminates their ability to muddy the waters during the hearing. Since the GOP is the majority in the House they still have the ability to call Hillary, Kerry, Rhodes and everyone else involved in Benghazi to testify, leaving them the options of either defying Congress, going up and pulling a Lois Lerner in front of Gowdy’s committee or testifying with no friendly questioners on the panel.

Not sure they want to do that unless they think they can get a 100 percent blackout of coverage from all the big media outlets that aren’t Fox or the various conservative websites.

jon1979 on May 5, 2014 at 2:49 PM

The Dems spent all weekend outraged that the GOP still wants to be talking about Benghazi when there are so many pressing issues. Don’t Republicans think those four (sham) investigations are enough? How about talking about beefing up embassy security instead of four dead Americans???

Yeah, they’re scared that this select committee will push for some real facts like where the hell Killary and the rat-eared bastard were that night. Why State didn’t try to respond even with near real-time intelligence.

Dems boycott at their risk because these facts are going to come out.

Inside the Beltway it probably sounds like a grand idea, and I’m sure it will be praised by everyone at NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN. But it’s not a strategy that will help any Red State Democrat Senator running for re-election. And House Democrats in all but complete safe districts won’t look much better in November.

Just my opinion.

If the Democrats do show up, they can use their “questioning” time to filibuster the hearings and demonize the Republicans, while the giving the witness time to prepare for the next Republican questioner. If the Democrats show up, it will take the Republicans twice as long to get answers.

Gowdy is an effective and experienced prosecutor, both at the federal and state court levels. There is no better choice.

However, there is no particular reason to believe that his committee will receive any more cooperation from the White House or State Dept or CIA than any of the others did. Obama does not seem inclined to confess.

Democrats are not just trying to discredit the hearings with the boycott – which is a White House idea, guaranteed – they also hope to give the Old Media an excuse not to cover them because of their “partisan” nature.

Of course, there was plenty of coverage for the Sandra Fluke fake hearing, which wasn’t a hearing at all and put on by only Democrats, but we can’t expect them to be fair.

I really honestly hope the Dems do not participate. I love the idea of having only GOP members hammering those who are testifying without the 5 minute breathers of listening to a Dem attack the Republicans for holding the hearings in the first place.

It’s like conducting a trial with no Defense counsel. As long as the jury gets the information from the media (which is the biggest concern here) the GOP ought to be able to get to the bottom of some of this.

My bet is that the White House will start releasing information as this gets ramped up and they will find someone to sacrifice/hold accountable to deflect away from the hearings.

All you leftist hyenas, you worse than Guinea Worms, this is for you, from the leftist Chicago Trib.

But if we allow our nation’s leaders to let politics obscure how our government works, we are making a fatal mistake. That’s how fools lose the Republic.

And those four in Benghazi weren’t fools. They died for our country, and years of political cover-up can’t obscure that.

Again, their names were Stevens, Smith, Doherty and Woods.

They didn’t die for politics.

Schadenfreude on May 5, 2014 at 3:14 PM

Dems want to boycott? I don’t understand why that is sound strategy…if they participated, they could run cover for those on the hot seat and use their mic time to criticize the GOP. I realize when Dems don’t get their way they like to cut and run, an infamous example being the hysteria over Walker’s reforms in WI, but it would seem they’d be missing a big opportunity to beat the ‘this is a joke’ drums.

Either way, it’s striking what this means. Here is a major political party, the one in power at the time of the attack, basically telling these families they couldn’t care less what happened to the four murdered Americans. That should give everyone pause.

Gowdy is going to fed some bad information and hinge his entire argument on it. It will then be proven to be false and once again the entire opposition will be blasted in the DNC media for months. All to further to aim to discredit us.

Watch for it.

Damn, you’re tiresome. So transparent.

Time to set some perjury traps…

Trey Gowdy was a prosecutor if I’m not mistaken.
Listening to his phrasing of questions to witnesses, he was a very good one at that. Being from South Carolina I have words of caution to the Beltway Bandits who will try to (how shall I put this?) discourage Mr. Gowdy from his duty. Poke at a South Carolinian and they will fire the first shot. I give you Ft. Sumter which the Carolinian Cannon Cockers turned into a pile of rubble in short order.

Missilengr on May 5, 2014 at 3:19 PM

I’ve never heard anything bad about Gowdy. He’s a truly professional prosecutor. The man certainly knows how to cross-examine a witness. If anybody thinks that’s easy, just give it a try. There are lots of lawyers out there who couldn’t cross-examine themselves out of a wet paper bag.

I can think of two shortcomings:

1. That hair.
2. His son does go to Clemson. But not everybody is perfect (kidding, kidding).

Hey, just in case any progressives didn’t get the memo, you are supposed to use the term “conspiracy theory” or “conspiracy” at least once in every social media post about Benghazi.

My bet is that the White House will start releasing information as this gets ramped up and they will find someone to sacrifice/hold accountable to deflect away from the hearings.

airupthere on May 5, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Believe me, anytime the Dem’s would’ve spent on this committee will be used instead to berate, intimidate, and threaten the news media into not covering the story.

One or two “survivors” with the truth is all it takes.

BobMbx on May 5, 2014 at 3:21 PM

Can’t find the story Allah tried to link at The Hill, but here’s this one:

Congressman cries ‘cover-up,’ and claims the Obama administration is hiding Benghazi witnesses by relocating them and giving them new identities

novaculus on May 5, 2014 at 3:16 PM

Obama’s good at hiding things, isn’t he? What’s the number of things in that list, so far? Fifty-seven hundred thousand?

Of COURSE “witnesses have been relocated/hidden” and all that goes with that. I mean, for Pity’s sake, it’s the C.I.A., they “hide things” by course of activity.

It’s Obama’s actions that go beyond negligence and point toward intentional betrayal that’s the issue, from where I view things, anyway. Federal agencies “hide things” when they’re told to, by campaigns or “stories” that are underway.

Cmon now fellers, nobody cared about this in 2012. This committee is going to be the laughingstock of the late night shows for weeks and weeks to come.

Eva D. Struktion on May 5, 2014 at 2:54 PM

And, hey Repubs, let’s make sure we have our priorities straight- we must keep looking good on late-night.

Sound advice, little Eva.

This has the feel of concern trolling. Are you suggesting that we shouldn’t even bother with the select committee? Gowdy is the real deal on following the evidence.
