Video: Scarborough explodes when Deutsch makes Benghazi about … Republicans

posted at 8:41 am on May 1, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Joe Scarborough ripped into co-host Donny Deutsch on Morning Joe earlier today after Deutsch attempted to make the issue of the Benghazi cover-up at the White House all about Republicans in 2014. The segment starts off with some fluff, and then turns to Benghazi shortly afterward. The big explosion starts after the six-minute mark, when Deutsch begins to warn the GOP not to bite on this scandal, and then asserts that the media has “covered it” sufficiently. Mika Brzezinski can’t buy that one, either (via Mediaite):

“I want to put up a warning here for the Republicans,” Deutsch replied. “I think this is fool’s gold for 2016.”

“What about the cover-up for the White House?” Scarborough interjected. “I’ve got everybody here apologizing for the White House. What about a cover-up, Donnie?”

“Why are you jumping to political strategy?” he continued. “So, tell me, what’s the politics of the White House lying about something that we all know they’re lying about?”

“You see the White House spokesperson lying on national television. You see an ABC Newsperson shocked that he’s lying and treating the press corps like they’re stupid. He says it’s not about Benghazi. Republicans and conservatives have been called fools for a year now for saying this happened. They don’t release it with the original the documents. They finally, reluctantly are forced to release it. Then you have the White House lying about it, saying it’s not about Benghazi, and you’re only reaction is, ‘Hey, Republicans better not overreact to the cover-up?’”

“We, as voters, understand both Republicans and Democrats are political animals and are going to manage a crisis to their favor,” Deutsch contested before he was interrupted.

“So, when Democrats cover something up, it’s politics,” Scarborough interjected. “When Republicans cover something up, it’s a scandal.” He closed by calling his co-hosts reaction to the White House’s behavior a “disgrace.”

That will make for an uncomfortable set the next time Deutsch returns.

Sam Stein came up next, and half-jokingly said he was “too scared to speak” about the story. However, he jumped in on Scarborough’s side. Stein’s wife worked at the White House on this issue, but he believes that the White House has not been transparent on Benghazi, and that it’s coming back to bite them now. Stein tries to turn the conversation back to the intelligence failure that led to the attack, but Scarborough interrupts Stein to remind him that Ambassador Chris Stevens and the US diplomatic staff in Libya repeatedly warned the State Department about the situation in Benghazi. This was not an intelligence failure, but a leadership failure — brought on by the need to pretend that the Libya intervention was a smashing success instead of an abject and costly failure.

Sam Stein says he “believes that the White House has not been transparent on Benghazi.”

Understatement of the year.

Stand down order? From whom?
Gun Running to Al Qaeda?
Why was CIC not at his post knowing an attack was underway?
Election in weeks?
Hillary’s future in jeopardy?
Why blame it on an easily disprovable internet video?

Yeah, Dems. Please give us the mighty Hillary in 2016. Bring it on.

Mord on May 1, 2014 at 8:45 AM

If Joe’s still harboring any thoughts of a 2016 presidential run, it’s not as if he had a choice on this one. To agree, or even just to let Deutsch slide would basically be to agree with the “What difference does it make?” remark by Hillary, the likely opponent of whomever the 2016 Republican nominee is — it would be the same as taking ObamaCare off the table as a debate issue in 2012 by nominating the guy who pushed a similar plan in Massachusetts.

jon1979 on May 1, 2014 at 8:54 AM

So where has Joe been hiding on all the other scandals and corrupt authoritarian leadership of this administration, unless it is now time to return to credibility in order to elect Hillary?

Don L on May 1, 2014 at 8:54 AM

Mika Brzezinski can’t buy that one, either

If you can’t even convince Mika, well then you really are a troll. It is becoming clear that the White House didn’t give a damn about Benghazi before or after.

They ignored security concerns and the fact the International Red Cross and Brits had moved out due to (among other things) an attempted attack on the British ambassador. The CAMPAIGN narrative was that the rat-eared wonder and Killary were shepherding deomcoratic initiatives in the region and upping security worked against that narrative. There was even talk of Killary showing up for some sort of a ceremony to show what progress had been made.

When the consulate was attacked, it was clear from the beginning that it was an orchestrated attack that had nothing to do with a YouTube video. BUT- to Ben Rhodes and his higher-ups at the White House this wasn’t a foreign policy issue it was a political issue. They deliberately skewed the facts for partisan political reasons heading into an election where Al Qaeda was on the run- decimated even.

Those lies and subsequent stonewalling are coming back to haunt the mid-terms.

Hey! Libyians were fighting side-by-side with Americans to protect that consulate from a spontaneous protest that got out of hand. Libyians rushed Ambassador Stevens to the hospital through the hostile crowds when he was injured. The Libyian people were truly saddened at the death of one who had done so much to help them. Hillary Clinton told us all this the morning after.

Mord on May 1, 2014 at 9:06 AM

The talking points from Donny Deutsch is the same thing we will hear from a majority of the mainstream media—it, (the story), is a non-starter and only a Republican witch-hunt, and facts don‘t matter. The very fact that the liberal media is still so invested in all things liberal, leaves the American public with only one conclusion—they can no longer be considered a credible news source.

It’s going to take a plumber to remove Chuck Todd’s lips from the administrations a$$. Un-frikin-believable how far he is in the tank!

No smoking gun? What?

Let’s review the tape:

1. White House Ben Rhodes drafts emial memo fingering alleged video as caus of Bengazhi raid and strssing protecting POTUS’s image and emails the memo to Susan Rice, Jay Carney and 10 others in the WH before Susan Rice TV prep session.
2. Rice goes on 5 or 6 national shows 2 days later and parrots talking points.
3. Video narrative falls apart over the next 2 weeks, and terrorism is identified.
4. WH blames intelligence community (CIA) for talking points.
5. Congress begins investigation, but WH then stonewalls on emails.
6. Whitehouse produces 100+ emails in May 2013 to Congress but omits smoking gun email from Ben Rhodes to Susan Rice, et al.
7. Judicial watch SUES WH for FOIA violation and Court orders production of specific email documents.
8. April 2014 – CIA (Mike Morrell) testifies under oath to Congresss that CIA NEVER identified a video as the causal factor for Bengazhi raid and that CIA had NO role in creating Rice talking points.
9. Court orders WH to produce emails to Judicial Watch which contains, for the first time, smoking gun Ben Rhodes email to Rice.
10. April 30, 2014 – Jay Carney (a/k/a – Obama’s Javelin Catcher) claims that smoking gun email not about Bengazhi despite ALL CAPS heading on the email that states “BENGAZHI”
11. May 1, 2013 – NBC suck-up Chuck Todd appears on Morning Joe and says there’s “nothing to see”.

There should be no doubt that Todd and NBC are working hand-in-hand with the Obama Administration – not that there was every any doubt.

Happy Nomad on May 1, 2014 at 9:01 AM

There were reportedly dozens of Americans trapped in the consulate when the two former SEALs (and then CIA ops) defied orders and went to the consulate (from the CIA annex) to help their fellow Americans under siege. It was only because of the extraordinary bravery of these two SEALs that the American death count wasn’t much higher that night. It is astonishing that this aspect of the story has never received any media attention. Dozens of Americans trapped in a consulate under coordinated terror attack by AQ, and Barry goes . . . to bed? “I’m beat, Val. Wake me up in the morning and let me know if anybody survived. Night.”

A real profile in courage, eh Donny?

The immoral nature of all involved is stunning. I am disgusted beyond all measure.

I’m shocked to hear that from Scarborough considering that right after the attacks he was one of the champions of the idea that the media couldn’t cover it because Republicans had politicized it. That was the moment many of us decided he had gone far enough into media la la land that he was beyond recovery.

Ditto Watergate back in 1973-74. People hated the story but the MSM was determined to push it. And they did. They did their jobs and Nixon was too stupid to burn the tapes.

Today we have affirmative-action style corrupt laziness from the MSM.

matthew8787 on May 1, 2014 at 10:49 AM

The 2016 election is going to turn on a lot of things, including things that haven’t happened yet, but everytime Clinton tries to trumpet her time as Secretary of State someone, maybe in the media if there is someoene looking to make a name, is going to say,”(Cough) Benghazi(Cough), Reset Button (Cough).” If you want to run as a leader than the times you led come into the light.

Still believe there was a criminal failure inside either State or the White House. But then again Bill Clinton could lie for 100 days that there was no genocide in Rwanda, wait til it was over, give aid to the genocidal mobs when they were refugees in Zaire/Congo and take a plane trip to Rwanda and look those people in the face and say, “We did’t know.” Criminal incompetence is rarely examined if there is a D behind the name.

Good on Scarborough for at least standing for truth.

I might add that this no coincidence: Clinton White House Lawyer Named Top Obama Councel

Eggleston gained distinction as a White House lawyer during congressional investigations into President Bill Clinton’s Whitewater real estate transactions and the independent counsel probe into whether Clinton lied about his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He also served as deputy chief counsel of the House special committee that investigated the Iran-Contra arms and money affair that ensnarled President Ronald Reagan.

Obama knows he deserves to be prosecuted and impeached over Benghazi. He’s lawyered up.

Needless to say, the Clintons loved that one.

Gun running. You know it, I know it, and everybody else knows it.

Anybody seen a statement from Boehner on the latest emails…?

d1carter on May 1, 2014 at 11:06 AM

Yes, it was something to the effect of….only when I see something “concrete” will I ask for a select committee. He is too busy mocking those in his own party for not salivating at the idea of immigration reform. Priorities!

Stein’s wife worked at the White House…

The family tree of the press and this White House seems to be most similar to a telephone pole.

I bet the 12 people that saw this live got a kick out of it.

Does anybody, anybody at all, in the Obama administration not lie?

PriscillaMS on May 1, 2014 at 11:48 AM

F. Chuck Todd’s “there’s no smoking gun here” at the end is the cherry on this turd.

aquaviva on May 1, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Perhaps if Boehner wasn’t so busy ridiculing his own party for cowardice on granting amnesty to illegals, he might find the backbone to appoint an independent commission. He’s had his thumb up his butt since it became apparent the administration was going to slow walk this thing. We could be a lot further down the track if he weren’t such a chickensh*t.

Meh. Boehner can’t multi-task and this administration knows it. Hence, the constant deflecting for the past five years.

Funny you should say that, the Husband just mentioned that that seems to be their first instinct every time. Seems like a lot of work for such poor results.

Whenever a liberal progressive Democrat warns off the GOP on a particular issue because it may hurt their electoral chances, I’ve got to think that’s the very spot the GOP needs to dig. There is something very foul smelling there.

Limbaugh is going to go Full Benghazi today.

Or….given the way this WH operates….they have the goods on him and are currently pulling his strings. heh….. cray cray I know…. but lately, things have played out like a season of House of Cards.

kawfytawk on May 1, 2014 at 12:07 PM

Is there any evidence that Benghazi is a topic that people care about?

mypalfish on May 1, 2014 at 9:38 AM

O’bama lost the college graduate vote in 2012 while vastly increasing his share of the high school dropout vote to over 80%.

Does that answer your question?
