Harry Reid: Now that the NBA’s banned Donald Sterling, the NFL should force the Redskins to change their name

posted at 7:51 pm on April 30, 2014 by Allahpundit

If there’s any politician you can trust to play with matches around the social powderkeg that is l’affaire Sterling, it’s a steady, low-key, diplomatic presence like Harry Reid.

It seems like only yesterday that Mark Cuban was warning about a slippery-slope problem in which owners would be increasingly policed for committing thoughtcrimes. It wasn’t yesterday, though. It was Monday.

“It is untoward of Daniel Snyder to try to hide behind tradition. Tradition? That’s what he says in refusing to change the name of the team,” Reid said. “Tradition? What tradition? A tradition of racism is all that name leaves in its wake. Mr. Snyder knows that in sports the only tradition that matters is winning, so I urge Daniel Snyder to do what’s morally right and remove this degrading term from the league by changing his team’s name.”

Reid said it’s also the responsibility of the NFL to remove the name from the league.

“Since Snyder fails to show any leadership, the National Football League should take an assist from the NBA and pick up the slack. It would be a slam dunk,” he added. “For far too long, the NFL has been sitting on its hands doing nothing while an entire population of Americans has been denigrated.”

Sterling clearly does disdain blacks. Snyder, by contrast, claims that “Redskins” is an honorific. Does Snyder’s intent matter to Reid and the Lords of Progress? Read Ace’s post from earlier this month for the answer.

I go back and forth in trying to decide whether Reid’s involvement in something like the “Redskins” fracas is helpful or not to the team’s defenders. On the one hand, he’s a repulsive human in every way; can’t hurt to have him as the face of the opposition. On the other hand, as of a year ago, the public was overwhelmingly in Snyder’s corner, with 79 percent saying that the team should keep the name. The whole point of the left’s anti-Redskins push over the last two years or so is to change that, and one easy way to do it is to polarize it along partisan lines. That’ll get you to 45-50 percent, at least, and that’s why Reid’s availing himself of the Senate floor to push the idea. If I’m Dan Snyder, I’m cutting a million-dollar check to Americans for Prosperity today just as a middle finger to Dingy Harry here, but maybe he figures it’s best not to feed a troll this voracious.

It’s not the same thing. Many actual Redskin natives (IE Not lily-white Harry Reid) are proud of the team and have said so.

If anything Reid’s actions here are racist and demeaning to Native Americans as a white man is acting as a mouth piece for their race purely for political motives THAT DON’T INCLUDE THEM!

Huh? Who is being denigrated by the Redskins honoring the glorious warrior heritage of Native Americans? This is all very confusing.

Meanwhile, an entire population of American vegetarians is being denigrated by the Green Bay Packers, due to their hateful and shockingly discriminatory connection to the meat packing industry.

Las Vegas takes money that could be going to Indian casinos. Perhaps Sen. Reid would like to aide the cause of Native Americans by proposing the elimination of all competing gambling facilities.

The Notorious G.O.P on April 30, 2014 at 8:36 PM

You’d think Republicans would be using the scandal around Reid’s land deal involvement to attack him politically. Seems strange they are silent about that and letting him cover it all up in an election year. Especially with video quotes like “This isn’t over!” available for the campaign.

Donald Sterling did not want for his paid for girl friend to hang out with black men. In particular Magic Johnson a known womanizer. He used the “N” word less time than any rapper and only after goaded by the slut he called a girl friend. I have to ask how he is a racist? Was there a difference in how or how much he paid white players? Did white players have better lockers? Better uniforms? Better coaches? He did not what his whore associating with black men. I wonder if any black father ever told his daughter not to bring home a white boy? All of this was questionably recorded in the “privacy” of Sterlings home. I wonder home many NBA players would lose their jobs and livelyhood if there were recordings of any racist statements they may have made in private.

a5minmajor on April 30, 2014 at 8:56 PM

Man, don’t know what to think about this Sterling business.

1 – first reaction was that the comments were pretty bad. The guy has a history here, and this certainly sounded awful.

2 – actually *heard* the tape yesterday morning, and my honest reaction was that what I heard was a guy telling his girlfriend, look – if you want to sleep with black guys, fine, have at it – just don’t be public about it such that you embarrass me in the process. And note – the vibe I got was “hey, I know I’m old and you’re young, and we both know what this relationship is really about, but if you’re going to cuckold me, keep it off of facebook, don’t bring the guys to my company and flaunt it in front of me and the world”. *shrug*

3 – I can picture the reverse situation with Oprah and her husband – “look, Stedman, if you insist on sleeping around with white girls, fine, but keep it private, and don’t bring them to my office or my studio and sit in the audience with them, ok? Do what you must, but don’t humiliate me publicly in the process.” That doesn’t sound racist to me (not just because the colors are reversed), it sounds like the kind of plea *anyone* who knew their S.O. was cheating on them and wanted to retain a hint of a shred of privacy and avoid the utter humiliation that would result from their S.O. banging someone else, posting pictures of themself with whoever they were banging, and then bringing that person on a date to the very public setting in which their spouse works.

4 – the NBA commissioner and actions taken against Sterling are insane. Even if you presume he is a racist beyond compare (he’s not, we have a Dem congressperson saying worse, um, the last few days), it is the height of totalitarianism and thought crime what is going on now. We’re not far now from the government penalizing and criminalizing this kind of thing (global warmists are pushing for it, Canada is doing in it some regards, and the leftist f*ckwits in this country will cheer for it as well).

5 – some university is returning $3million to him that he donated for cancer or kidney disease research or something similar – because of this kerfuffle. Um, that is also insane, unless you think that what he said is worse than, you know, cancer and kidney disease. And if it *is* worse, then cancer and kidney disease are apparently virtually cured and have no need for additional research. Good f*cking grief.

Ugh.

That really puts things in perspective; isn’t Magic Johnson HIV+ ( and married)? Not to excuse the N-word, but it does change things a little bit.

I’ll say this about the N-word: maybe it would help if black athletes and celebrities didn’t toss it around so casually. Hard to call out a white guy for using the same word that blacks guys call themselves.

Everyone knows the loopy lefties are going to win this one too – they always win eventually: demagoguery works, plain and simple. OK, the whole house of cards will collapse someday, but that could be a long time away.

For now, I think people of sane mind should get out in front of this and start demanding that Snyder change the name of the team – to the Washington Thinskins. They could use an image of an Obama bobblehead for a logo. It could only be more perfect if the Thinskins started paying the salaries of the referees.
