She’s back: Mia Love clinches the Republican nomination in Utah’s 4th

posted at 9:21 pm on April 28, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

Former Republican mayor of Saratoga Springs Mia Love didn’t waste much time after losing to incumbent Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson by fewer than 800 votes in 2012 to announce that she planned to try, try again to represent Utah’s 4th Congressional district, and then in December, Matheson announced that he was retiring from the seat. I missed this over the weekend, but Love did indeed secure the Republican nomination on Saturday — and since she’ll now be facing a non-incumbent in a district Romney took by a 37-point margin in 2012, the GOP is feeling pretty jazzed about her prospects. Via The Hill:

Rising GOP star Mia Love handily secured the Republican nominee Saturday to replace retiring Rep. Jim Matheson’s (D-Utah).

The former Saratoga Springs, Utah, mayor raked in more than 78 percent of the vote at the party’s nominating convention, while businessman Bob Fuehr received just about 22 percent, according to multiple reports. The victory makes her one step closer to becoming the first black female Republican ever elected to Congress.

Now, she will face off against Democrat Doug Owens, a Salt Lake City attorney who garnered 98 percent of his party’s support at his own party’s convention.

Love quickly became a party favorite after her 2012 Republican National Convention speech captured national attention. In the speech, she talked about her parents’ immigration to the U.S. from Haiti, and attacked President Obama for policies that she said failed to improve the country.

I admit that I don’t know much about her, but is the reason that she gets so much attention because she is black and photogenic?

From what I can tell so far, she’s cut from the same cloth as Tim Scott (R-SC). Not easily co-optable.

Plus, she and Scott both have strong social interests. Scott recently conducted a listening tour.

Meople on April 28, 2014 at 9:35 PM

Obama’s gonna hate her. :)

22044 on April 28, 2014 at 9:35 PM

Instead of inviting voters to get to know him at rallies and town hall meetings, Scott is going to them to learn about the issues that concern them most, and in some cases, to spend some hours in their shoes. In the past several months, he has performed what he described as “entry-level jobs,” including sweeping floors, chopping chicken and bagging groceries. It’s a method he employed in his district when he served in the House, but in his first effort to win a statewide race, Scott finds it helpful to go undercover.

That is pure genius.

We shouldn’t support affirmative action just because the candidate is a Republican.

Yeps.

She’s a nothing-burger besides her race though. Nominating her in 2012 gave Matheson a 2 year bonus for free and allowed him to retire undefeated, steering him to run for Governor in 2016. Romney won this district by 38 points, she managed to lose it. I remember predicting this would happen when Erika start promoting her around here. Hopefully this time around the R will be enough to carry her over.

She’ll be a backbencher who will vote 100% with the leadership.

Stoic Patriot on April 28, 2014 at 9:32 PM

Her question was not whether Love is your ideal of the philosophical, Kirkian conservative, or whether you were promoting Love for President, or even if you are supporting her candidacy in a district currently held by Utah’s only Democrat.

The question was “does she get a lot of media attention because she’s black and photogenic”, and that’s not a very difficult one, is it? you might have offered “yes, and being one of three black women in all of Utah and a Republican to boot probably adds a little cache to her appeal”.

Come on, dude.

Jaibones on April 28, 2014 at 10:02 PM

Leaders like Margaret Thatcher were respected for their conviction and resoluteness. The fact that Thatcher was a woman was incidental.

I don’t like the idea of labeling someone a “party rockstar” largely because of their ethnicity or gender. That’s how we ended up with Obama. It also sort of happened with Rubio.

Take Cruz, on the other hand. He has made a name for himself apart from the fact of his ethnic background. With him, you don’t say, “he’s that Cuban guy, right?” No, you say, “he’s that kick-butt conservative, isn’t he?”

She gets attention because she’s a rarity – a black mormon Republican woman. If she wasn’t black, the number of threads on Hot Air dedicate to her (a failed candidate to a congressional seat) would be zero.

joana on April 28, 2014 at 10:16 PM

bluegill on April 28, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Easy to find out about her. No effort at all, try it sometimes.

Love favors “fiscal discipline, limited government, and personal responsibility.”[36] She has also said that she asks herself three questions whenever she approaches an issue, “Is it affordable? Is it sustainable? Is it my job?”[37] She has advocated for reducing federal aid to students and allowing loan rates to be set by the free market.

At her college orientation Love’s father told her, “Mia, your mother and I never took a handout. You will not be a burden to society. You will give back.” She underscored this philosophy on the campaign trail to sum up her conservative views.[38]

Love is pro-life and has been endorsed by the Susan B. Anthony List.[39] She supports domestic energy exploration, local control of education, Second Amendment rights, and state control of public lands.[40

He’s still going to be a Democrat running statewide in Utah. And in 2012, Love held Matheson to the smallest margin of victory in his career.

You’re aware that’s because Republicans gerrymandered Matheson’s former district out of existence, right? It was supposed to be an easy pickup. And it’d be with a half-decent candidate. Anyone who thinks Mia Love is going to be a star should spend some time watching or listening to her debates with Matheson.

And running statewide for Governor is quite different than running for federal office. It was a totally unnecessary loss.

Here’s the list of Republicans who have lost open R+38 seats since at least the II War:

I share your wariness, and I do also hope Mia doesn’t disappoint.

Going out on a limb, here: I think she would not do worse than Matheson’s 13 year ACU voting record of 41.46% conservative.

You really are a closed-minded little thing, aren’t you? Arrogant to anything outside your realm of favor.

Mia is pretty close to the status of a Frederick Douglass Republican. Ever heard of those?

Mia Love is clean an articulate.

Davidk, I never said that, you filthy, obscene liar. You ought to be careful, because people can be banned for fabricating quotes like that.

Who appointed you message board police? Go stuff it. I’ll post what I like.

Best served cold. :)

On the other hand, Matheson has been more conservative than Illinois pansy Mark Kirk for the past two years, and much more conservative than nitwit Senator Susan “Shaky” Collins.

Expect the national Democratics to put a ton of money into this race, because every black Republican there is knocks a block out of the plantation walls they have built around the black community.
