The Obama State Department’s Smart Power doctrine in two tweets

posted at 6:01 pm on April 25, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Look, I don’t want to make the biggest deal in the world out of dumb tweets, but if your entire foreign policy philosophy amounts to, “We’re way super-smarter than the last guy who did this, and our super-smarts are going to change the world,” it behooves you not to tweet like a—well, I would say like a tween, but they know how to use hashtags.

Jake Tapper to Jen Psaki on “The Lead” today: Nothing the administration is doing is working, right?

JAKE TAPPER: If Russia starts a World War III, what is the U.S. prepared to do about it?

JEN PSAKI: Well, we certainly hope that’s not the case. We continue to believe there’s no military solution to what is happening on the ground in Ukraine. we’re watching issues like troop movements very closely. We’re working closely with the Ukrainian government but we remain on a political issue here.

TAPPER: It doesn’t look like what the administration is trying to do in Ukraine is working. Can you point to success with respect to the Ukraine policy?

PSAKI: We’ve put in place several rounds of sanctions.

TAPPER: But they are not working, Jen.

PSAKI: Well, they are working. The facts on the ground, the impact on their economy is a striking difference from what they are saying.

I think this “name on success” may become a recurring question for the State Department. And, all together now: Awww.

Update (AP): Actual quote from the State Department’s actual spokesman: “They have not been following their hashtag with actions.”

Much like Syria, Egypt and Libya, has this Administration set forth why we’re choosing one side over the other?

Sorry, I meant to ask, has this Administration *tweeted* why we’re choosing one side over the other?

that was funny Bitter Clinger….Lurch brings his dog to work with him.

What’s not funny is that Fox just said it has been confirmed that Russian air force has been flying over the Ukraine for the last few days and the WH plans to announce more sanctions by Monday.

I think this “name one success” may become a recurring question for the State Department.

It should be a recurring theme for Republicans going forward, it can be used to skewer the faculty lounge liberal idiots Obama has running the show, and also used to smack the drunken poseur Hillary around.

So clearly is it advantageous, I question whether the stupid party will use it.

But also, I think if you look back at 2012 and the series of interviews the sitting president of the United States gave, probably the toughest interview he had was with Jon Stewart. Probably the most substantive, challenging interview Barack Obama had in the election year was with the anchor of The Daily Show.

In the beginning, we were all fish. Okay? Swimming around in the water. And then one day a couple of fish had a retard baby, and the retard baby was different, so it got to live. So Retard Fish goes on to make more retard babies, and then one day, a retard baby fish crawled out of the ocean with its… mutant fish hands… and it had butt sex with a squirrel or something and made this Retard frog-sqirrel, and then *that* had a retard baby which was a… monkey-fish-frog… And then this monkey-fish-frog had butt sex with that monkey, and that monkey had a mutant retard baby that screwed another monkey… and that made you
So there you go! You’re the retarded offspring of five monkeys having butt sex with a fish-squirrel! Congratulations!

Then, too, China is watching this all, and thinking of Taiwan, as well as those islands they are tussling with Japan about. North Korea is looking south. Did I mention Iran?

Do we really even need a State Department anymore? I mean, what do they do? Maybe 100 years ago this was a bureaucratic necessity. But why now? Is there any major global crisis that the State Department has ever solved?

I would rather have seen anybody else, other than Romney, for all his talent and abilities to govern, run against Obama. I knew it was a loser from the get go. In order to govern, ya have to get elected, and if the Republicans nominate another Bush this time around, we may as well settle in for another 8 years of whomever the left runs against him…it could be Warren, Clinton or mickey mouse for all I care, Bush would LOSE. Actual quote from the State Department’s actual spokesman: “They have not been following their hashtag with actions.”

It’s scary and horrible how the neocons, both parties and the mass media are trying to start Cold War III over America’s right to dominate Eastern Ukraine and conquer Sevastopol.

But this is reassuringly stupid and amateurish.

If the Obama administration won’t behave wisely, at least they can pursue unwise policies with a lack of professionalism and seriousness that may limit the harm that results.

These aggressive fools think that appropriate “actions” would include Russia going back to subsidizing Ukraine – a Ukraine that is not longer democratic but has a US and EU-backed anti-Russian junta. How dumb do you have to be to think that that can happen? Russia is not going to put its enemies back on welfare.

The less serious America is about forcing Russia to take “action” the better.

And it doesn’t get much less serious than this.

Count to 10 on April 25, 2014 at 6:09 PM

Made the same point myself a few days ago.

Worst of all is that Russia pretty much holds all the cards. They can monkey with us in Syria and Iran. They can squeeze our supply line into Afghanistan. They can can throttle the supply of natural gas into Europe. We’ve had economic sanctions on Cuba for a good half-century and somehow the Revolucion endures. And there’s no way we’re going to get any meaningful amount of military hardware into the region on short notice to give said sanctions any teeth. Oh, and we have Obama and Kerry in leadership. Somewhere down the line, a historian is going to examine the Kremlin archives of this period and discover that the Russian high command took Washington, D.C. off the target list, deciding this was one of those occasional instances where not decapitating the national command and control structure made the most sense.

Smart power! Forward!
