Piers Morgan pro-tip: NRA is really an assassin society for promoting concealed-carry reciprocity, or something

posted at 1:11 pm on April 25, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Come on, admit it — you miss having this kind of brilliance on television every weeknight, right? Piers Morgan celebrates the NRA’s Annual Meetings and their new push to provide clarity on interstate use of concealed-carry permits by employing a little character assassination:

Assassins? Morgan’s perspective didn’t improve much with time, either:

Hey, it’s not like a government is forcing everyone within its borders to buy a product from multibillion-dollar corporations, y’know. How did Morgan feel about ObamaCare, anyway? Americans can choose whether to buy firearms or not — which is exactly the liberty that the NRA wants to preserve. As far as being an assassin’s guild, the actual issue is just coordinating reciprocity so that those licensed to carry concealed firearms can travel to other states without inadvertently breaking laws:

With concealed weapons now legal in all 50 states, the National Rifle Association’s focus at this week’s annual meeting is less about enacting additional state protections than on making sure the permits already issued still apply when the gun owners travel across the country.

The nation’s largest gun-rights group, which officially opens its meeting of about 70,000 people Friday in Indianapolis, wants Congress to require that concealed weapons permits issued in one state be recognized everywhere, even when the local requirements differ. Advocates say the effort would eliminate a patchwork of state-specific regulations that lead to carriers unwittingly violating the law when traveling.

“Right now it takes some legal research to find out where you are or are not legal depending on where you are,” said Guy Relford, an attorney who has sued communities for violating an Indiana law that bars local gun regulation. “I don’t think that’s right.”

The existence of these laws already requires some coordination now. Mostly, it requires anyone taking a weapon over a state line to do a lot of footwork beforehand, sometimes overcoming nearly-insurmountable bureaucratic hurdles. It has nothing to do with the sale of weapons, and in this case the owners have already passed background checks and some level of weapons training. The millions of carry permit holders — myself among them — do not plan on going on ninja missions any time soon, Piers Morgan’s paranoid fantasies notwithstanding.

The NRA, so far, doesn’t seem to be noticing Piers Morgan’s latest meltdown. (Perhaps they might want to use this to start selling ninja gear at their Annual Meetings this weekend.) However, the NRA has a response to Michael Bloomberg’s pledge to spend $50 million of his own money against gun ownership with a campaign of their own. They may not have a multi-billionaire spending millions to buy a “grassroots” network, but they have millions of people willing to part with $25 to match him. Hot Air has the exclusive first look at the NRA’s new campaign:

Bottom line, Barak Obama is in his fifth year as being the salesman of the month at every single gun shop in America. And that isn’t because of the filthy bastard’s love of Second Amendment rights.

What the hell business is it of this British guy to be telling us what to do?

Anyway, as far as reciprocity, where I live is particularly absurd. I’m in Arlington Virginia right across the river from DC. That means that if I have my gun, and I’m in a taxi cab in Arlington, and the cab driver takes a wrong turn and ends up having no choice but to go across the bridge and cross the line into DC to turn around, suddenly I’m a serious criminal. It’s absurd. This is what happens when you start messing with the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment says what it says. States do not have the right to violate it. It’s not just a problem for concealed carry either, but also with gun types. For example, I own a short barreled AR. I could be driving with it in my car in Virginia, and that would be legal. But if I unwittingly got on the wrong road and crossed into Maryland without realizing it, I’d suddenly be guilty of a crime. (At least that’s how I understand it. Last time I checked short-barreled ARs are illegal in Maryland.)

The whole thing is absurd.

Allah Pundit would find this interesting, but the assassins meme Piers is trying to get going reminds me of the Batman Begins movie, and my greatest complaint about it. In it, the League of Assassins are portrayed as RIGHT WING fanatics, bent on bringing justice and judgment to the world via destruction–particularly Gotham. But in the comic books, Ras Al Ghul (son of the demon) was a LEFT WING fanatic, specifically a Malthusian, intent on saving the planet by reducing the human population any way he could (plagues, earthquakes, etc). This changed in the movie because Hollywood has a hard time grasping the concept of a left wing bad guy. By the third movie, this view seems to have changed, as Bane and his army are behaving much like the OWS crowd wished to, like the French Revolutionaries.

But still, that’s what the Assassins remark reminded me of.

Following a hypothetical courses of history is always problematic. I agree, without the NRA, or something like it, those things would be more likely. But given America’s culture and history of gun ownership, such an organization is bound to crop up when the government starts getting grabby.

Fenris on April 25, 2014 at 2:27 PM

Sure – if not THE NRA, there would be something like the NRA – but I still think that was essentially libby’s point.

But we’ll never know if he can’t get anything else past the moderators…..

WAIT!!! How old is that commercial? I wrote almost that exact argument in a comment at the Guardian UK newspaper!!! Did they copy me? OR have I seen that argument before? The $50,000,000 is very recent… I don’t think I’ve seen any campaign against it!!!

Yep, I’m a trend setter! That’s me.

They actually forgot the part about it not being compelled by taxes or unions, that donations to the NRA are completely voluntary.

Your welcome NRA. Now maybe I should join up? Maybe.

Who will stop these assassins?

Is that like the mice that asked “Who will bell the cat ?”

CoolMick on April 25, 2014 at 2:33 PM

The @NRA is now in paid collusion with gun manufacturers to arm every single American. Somebody, surely, has to stand up and stop them?

Makes amnesty for illegals that much more important

When he does, I’m sure he’ll set me straight.

Ya know – you don’t even HAVE to own a gun to join the NRA….

I was actually a bit undecided about renewing after my first year due to the irritating quantity of fund-raising mail and email.
But re-upped (for 2 years) when I realized the NRA had clearly become the leftists/Dems biggest enemy/bogeyman.

HA says it’s an Exclusive. That usually means it’s kind of new, unless you are, um, The History Channel.

Congrats on someone likely seeing your comment and putting it in the limelight.

Thanks, Piers. Just joined…for three years. I’ve had it with him and other liberal and RINO-shite elites.

Tremendous ad.

How secret are you if you go around telling everyone you’re a ‘Secret Assassin’?

NotCoach on April 25, 2014 at 1:43 PM

Reminds me of the time my daughter dressed up as a ninja for Halloween. A clumsier child you will never meet. I told her she’d never make it as a real one because her victims would hear her tripping over her own two feet from a mile away.
