GOP Senate candidate’s ad: Meet the doctor who saved my baby’s life

posted at 4:01 pm on April 23, 2014 by Allahpundit

The first goal of every novice candidate is to make an impression on voters. Watch this spot from Monica Wehby, via the Examiner, and tell me how she did.

She’s running uphill as a Republican in Oregon but she’s got a few things working for her. One: It’s hard to follow ye olde “war on women” playbook against a candidate like this, especially after watching this ad. Two: Wehby’s a centrist on some issues, including abortion, which might help her play better in a blue state. Three: Her first ad (which you’ll also find below) was a critique of ObamaCare, which sounds risky in a Democratic stronghold until you remember that Oregon’s O-Care exchange was a flaming bag of shinola even more so than Healthcare.gov was. If there’s any state in the country where centrist Democrats might be willing to cast a protest vote against ObamaCare — especially for a doctor — it’s Oregon.

There’s only been one poll so far matching her head to head with Merkley. She trails by 12, but that’s not prohibitive if the public decides they like her and a red wave materializes this fall.

“When the government fears the people there is liberty, when the people fear their government there is tyranny.-Thomas Jefferson”

Monica Wehby will fight to protect all of our constitutional rights and especially the 2nd Amendment. She will strongly oppose the UN Arms Treaty which infringes upon our right to keep and bear arms. A constitutional right is an inalienable one and our politicians must always remember that.

Dr. Monica Wehby believes that before we make any reforms to our immigration system that we must secure the border. Border security must be the immediate priority. Monica is also against amnesty for those who came here illegally.

Yep…And she is in the blue State of Oregon. The fact that she opposes Obamacare and is relatively conservative fiscally is much preferable to the opponent. You won’t find anyone better with any chance at all of winning there. As a flat out conservative, I like this lady. I don’t think she will be much of a stickler when it comes to such issues as abortion, immigration, and gun control. Those are not her issues… You take what you can get in liberal cesspools like Oregon, Washington and Kalifornicate.

Ward Cleaver on April 23, 2014 at 6:01 PM

In reading up on her, it is pretty clear that she sees abortion as a very private matter between a physician and patient. She does not believe it to be the province of the federal government. That being said, I doubt that her being a U.S. Senator should threaten right to life conservatives. At the very least, she sees it as a states rights issue. For Oregon, you really cannot expect more of an anti-abortion candidate to stand a chance.

TonyP on April 23, 2014 at 5:19 PM

I did the same as you, Tony…She believes in securing the borders prior to any talk of immigration reform, and she has a strong statement on the 2nd Amendment. The only real issue is that she sees abortion as a privacy issue,a and not one for government at any level.

bimmcorp on April 23, 2014 at 6:32 PM

Not all of us Californians that move to Oregon are bad. BTW, I married a girl from Oregon. And she’s conservative.

Particular Set of Skills on April 23, 2014 at 6:40 PM

The ad confused me, having read that she was pro-abortion. It was a very pro-life ad. How could a pediatric surgeon support the willful butchering of an unborn child? Does not compute…. In reading up on her, it appears as though she is one of those who is personally against abortion, but feels as though it is not a government issue…rather it is one between the woman and her doctor. I do not believe that she participates in the aborting of babies. In Oregon, that’s about as anti abortion as the voters will allow…if that…

bimmcorp on April 23, 2014 at 8:37 PM

OK, so she’s NOT pro-amnesty. There’s no evidence that she is anti-gun or pro-gun control. In fact, she has a pretty solid, conservative view of the Second Amendment. You say that she sees abortion issues as a privacy matter, but no one can support the allegation that she participates or actually performed, or even actively supports, abortions. Moreover, this lady is a skilled pediatric neurosurgeon, who is willing to give up her successful practice to make a political difference. For cryin’ out loud, she more like Joan of Arc, than some friggin’ RINO. You want to know why we lose elections? Republicans nominate people we think have the correct ideological credentials then they talk gibberish, about “legitimate” rape like Todd Akin of Missouri. The dems high five each other and another Senator wannabe bites the dust. Maybe no Republican does have a chance in Oregon. Maybe the Conservatives there are partly responsible.

TonyP on April 23, 2014 at 9:08 PM

She’s also supported by Lars Larson, who in Oregon is the kiss of death for any and all candidates who run.

If you all think that’s she’s good, think of her as Jeff Flake in a skirt.
