Report: Jewish residents being forced to “register” by pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukrainian city; Update: U.S. ambassador confirms; Update: Hoax?

posted at 12:41 pm on April 17, 2014 by Allahpundit

Interesting how the designated villain justifying Russian aggression keeps changing. In Russia itself, it’s gays who are the insidious western agents subverting the order from within. In Kiev it’s “Nazis” within the Euromaidan movement who fill that role, allegedly hellbent on exacting revenge against ethnic Russians for World War II unless Czar Vladimir intervenes to protect them.

Evidently, in Donetsk, they like their scapegoats more traditional.

Jews emerging from a synagogue say they were handed leaflets that ordered the city’s Jews to provide a list of property they own and pay a registration fee “or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation and see their assets confiscated,” reported Ynet News, Israel’s largest news website…

The leaflets bore the name of Denis Pushilin, who identified himself as chairman of “Donetsk’s temporary government,” and were distributed near the Donetsk synagogue and other areas, according to the report.

Pushilin acknowledged the flyers were distributed by his organization but he disavowed their content, according to the web site Jews of Kiev, Ynet reported…

It says the reason is because the leaders of the Jewish community of Ukraine supported Bendery Junta, a reference to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement that fought for Ukrainian independence at the end of World War II, “and oppose the pro-Slavic People’s Republic of Donetsk,” a name adopted by the militant leadership.

They’re demanding ID, passports, “religious documents,” and documents related to real property, as well as a $50 registration fee. Failure to comply means revocation of one’s citizenship in Ukraine — or “Novo Russia,” as Putin referred today to the eastern part of the country — and deportation. No word yet on armbands, but stay tuned. For what it’s worth, I’ve seen conflicting reports on whether Pushilin, the local thug whose name is on the flyer, admits that it came from his group or not. The USA Today story quoted above, citing Ynet, says he did; the JTA, however, cites a Russian website that claims Pushilin denies the flyer came from the group at all and is actually some sort of false-flag provocation. It would be a clever ruse for Ukrainian nationalists to do something to cast Putin’s admirers as the real Nazis, after so much propaganda from Moscow to the contrary. (In fact, the Russian-backed Yanukovych regime liked to rile up its riot police by accusing the maidan protesters of being led by Jews.) But the element of revanchism here, in wanting to punish the city’s Jews for their ancestors’ support for independence from Russia decades ago, is right in line with the tide of Russian irredentism towards Ukraine generally. It probably did come from Pushilin’s group. No wonder Natan Sharansky expects aliyah from Ukraine to double this year.

If you’re expecting the Ukrainian army to do anything about this, forget it. They’re broke, disorganized, facing defections from Russian loyalists in the ranks, and thus understandably reluctant to commit to a fight they can’t win. The best check on persecution by Russian forces is publicity, I think: Putin wants his reclamation of Ukraine to be seen as something virtuous, an operation that is itself designed to stop the phantom persecution of ethnic Russians by “Nazis.” The more his own side behaves like honest-to-goodness Nazis, the harder that charade is to maintain. Hopefully he’s still at the point where he cares about maintaining the charade at all.

Update: If this is a hoax or false flag, it’s good enough to fool the U.S. diplomatic corps.

Update: Some locals maintain that it is in fact a false flag by Ukrainian nationalists designed to make the Putinistas look bad:

The Donetsk Jewish community dismissed this as “a provocation,” which it clearly is. “It’s an obvious provocation designed to get this exact response, going all the way up to Kerry,” says Fyodr Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs. “I have no doubt that there is a sizeable community of anti-Semites on both sides of the barricades, but for one of them to do something this stupid—this is done to compromise the pro-Russian groups in the east.”

Why? The Russian government has been playing up the (real but small) role of fascists and neo-Nazis in the victory of the EuroMaidan in Kiev. The Ukrainian government, utterly powerless to fight off the Russians and their local stooges, have had to rely on other methods, like leaking taped phone calls of allegedly local separatists getting their commands from Moscow. This may be just another tactic to smear the so-called anti-Maidan in the east of Ukraine: you think we’re fascists? Well, take a look at these guys.

Hopefully he’s still at the point where he cares about maintaining the charade at all.

I’d say it’s pretty much game over if they start rounding up the Jews. The question then becomes what the response from the international community will be.

We already know that Obama, Kerry, Powers, and Hagel hate Jews. Would this be enough to re-think handing out MREs as the sum total of assistance? If there is a Jewish lobby, maybe this would be a good time to exert pressure on the anti-Semites running the nation. The Ukrainians really have no defensive force. Their tanks are 50 years old while Putin’s…… er…. the pro-Russian locals have factory fresh tanks from the Motherland.

What I am missing? Where are the Israelis?

jake-the-goose on April 17, 2014 at 12:51 PM

Funny you should mention that. Here’s an article from Fox yesterday….

American-Israeli relations: US still Israel’s best friend but no longer country’s only friend

Late last month the United States introduced a U.N. resolution condemning Russia’s de facto seizure of Crimea from Ukraine. As expected, the resolution passed the General Assembly easily. Unexpected, though, was the decision by Israel, long America’s most reliable U.N. vote (and vice versa), to absent itself from the ballot.
This shook up the Obama administration. National Security Adviser Susan Rice met with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and demanded an explanation. Lieberman blandly blamed it on a strike at the foreign ministry. What was he supposed to do, ask Israeli diplomats to cross a picket line?

At home he was more candid. “We have good, trusting relations with the Americans and the Russians,” he told a TV interviewer. “I don’t see why she needs to get caught up in this.” General Amos Gilad, a senior figure in the Ministry of Defense, seconded this new, even-handed approach. “Our security interests should not be defined as identical to that of anyone else, even the United States,” he said.

Ha’aretz, a left-wing Israeli newspaper, reported that White House officials “nearly went crazy” with shock and anger when they heard such ungrateful sentiments.

If so, Rice and her colleagues haven’t been paying close attention. Israel is no longer an impoverished, embattled, emotionally needy client state. It is an emerging international power with options it never had before. Locked doors are now wide open. Old enemies want to be given another chance. America is still Israel’s best friend, but it is no longer its only friend.

So I take it this new piece is a desperate attempt to countermand this frustrating situation.

Truman responded to the Soviets with the Berlin airlift.

JFK responded to the Soviets with the Cuban Missile Crises

Reagan responded to the Soviets by calling for them to tear down the Berlin wall and referring to them as the Evil Empire.

Even Carter responded to Soviet agression by boycotting the Moscow Olympics.

Now we have the lazy stupid rat-eared coward who responds to the Soviet threat by delivering surplus MREs. I guess it could be worse, he might have decided to carpet bomb Ukraine with IPods containing recordings of his greatest speeches.

A majority of American Jews, the ones who voted for Obama, are not the brightest bunch in world. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that many of them came to America at the turn of the century, before Hitler and all the other 20th century massacres. Unlike the Jews of Israel, they don’t have understanding of how violent this world really is.

Basically the Israeli Jews and American Jews are two separate people and religions now. Each year they have less in common.

Worth reading.

Putin’s Jewish embrace: Is it love or politics?

(JTA) — When even Russian policemen had to pass security checks to enter the Sochi Winter Olympics, Rabbi Berel Lazar was waved in without ever showing his ID.

Lazar, a Chabad-affiliated chief rabbi of Russia, was invited to the opening ceremony of the games last month by President Vladimir Putin’s office. But since the event was on Shabbat, Lazar initially declined the invitation, explaining he was prevented from carrying documents, among other religious restrictions.

So Putin ordered his staff to prepare an alternative entrance and security-free route just for the rabbi, according to one of Lazar’s top associates, Rabbi Boruch Gorin.

“It is unusual, but the security detail acted like kosher supervisors so Rabbi Lazar could attend,” Gorin said.

To him, the Sochi anecdote illustrates Putin’s positive attitude toward Russian Jewry — an attitude Gorin says is sincere, unprecedented in Russian history and hugely beneficial for Jewish life in the country.

It’s not Germany, it’s not Hitler, it’s not 1939. So no. It’s not happening again. Move along. Continue supporting the CiC.

Yeah, because unlike Germany under Hitler, Russia has a long history of cherishing and respecting their Jewish citizens. ;0

What does obama have to say to this?

Leftist thugs, you illiberal trash, how do you take this?

Schadenfreude on April 17, 2014 at 1:48 PM

This whole thing smells. And the concept of Russians running around with quasi swastikas… well, that just… wow. Sure you’ll find yoots trying to defy authority with stuff like that, but. Who knows? The whole thing is insane.

What… a… mess…

Waiting for the Alex Jones Nutjobs.

Just because he correctly sounds the alarm on the Federal Reserve doesn’t mean he’s right on much else.

Why doesn’t Nanny Bloomberg pour his billions into fighting this instead of soft drinks and the Constitution?? We know Hussein isn’t going to say boo about it …

Update: If this is a hoax or false flag, it’s good enough to fool the U.S. diplomatic corps.

It’s a hoax…

The flyers were signed in the name of Denis Pushilin, the leader of Donetsk’s pro-Russian separatists, who led the takeover of several government buildings and claimed the city as the Donetsk Republic.

NCSJ has contacted the Donetsk Jewish community leaders, who called the flyers a provocation. They said that all authorities have denied any connection to the flyers, and that Pushilin has denied authorship.

Several members of the community went to the Nationalities Commissioner, who repudiated the flyer, and said that the leaflets were distributed to cause unrest among the Jewish population.

Similar leaflets were distributed targeting international students at the local university.

ninjapirate on April 17, 2014 at 1:52 PM

Or best question on this: why is there no registration of Jews in Russia, which Putin already controls for more than a decade?

Valkyriepundit on April 17, 2014 at 1:21 PM

Um…. maybe because there are only about 140K practicing Jews in all of Russia. Between pogroms and the diaspora of Russian Jews, there aren’t too many to worry about.

Happy Nomad on April 17, 2014 at 1:54 PM

What say our pro-Russian concern trolls? Who’s the fascist now?

Several members of the community went to the Nationalities Commissioner, who repudiated the flyer, and said that the leaflets were distributed to cause unrest among the Jewish population.

Why, that’s totally impossible.

vlad martel on April 17, 2014 at 1:55 PM

@vlad martel: My understanding is that Putin was rescued as a child from some neighborhood bullies by a Jewish family, and is comparatively sentimental about Jews; in any case I doubt he’s foolish enough to be seen conniving at pogroms. Of course any instability gives him an added pretext to crack down in general.

Seth Halpern on April 17, 2014 at 1:57 PM

The good news is that this is not “breaking” like the Pollard “news”, but it may actually be true. There are accusations, counter-accusations, and “hoax” claims all over the net.

Jewish Telegraphic Agency, again:

Few would dispute that Putin has been friendly to Jewish institutional life in Russia — especially to organizations and leaders that belong to the Chabad Hasidic movement.

Gorin, a Chabad rabbi and chairman of Moscow’s $50 million Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, credits Putin personally for providing state funding for the institution, which opened in 2012. Putin also donated a month’s wages to the museum.

“Putin has facilitated the opening of synagogues and Jewish community centers across Russia, at the Jewish community’s request. This has had a profound effect on Jewish life, especially outside Moscow,” Gorin said. “He instituted annual meetings with Jewish community leaders and attends community events. His friendship with the Jewish community has given it much prestige and set the tone for local leaders.”

Putin’s relationship with the Jewish community is consistent with his larger strategy for governing Russia. His brand of Russian nationalism extends beyond just ethnic Russians to include the country’s many minorities. Putin has carefully cultivated relationships with Russia’s many subgroups and regions as a means of projecting his government’s authority.

Mikhail Chlenov, secretary general of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, says Putin’s pro-Jewish tendencies are part of the reason that anti-Semitic incidents are relatively rare in Russia. In 2013, the Russian Jewish Congress documented only 10 anti-Jewish attacks and acts of vandalism, compared to dozens in France.

The “Reset Button” has been pushed all the way back to 1939.

punditbob on April 17, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Guys, think for a second… does it make any sense to announce something like this on leaflets if it were real? Wouldn’t you announce it over the radio? Or TV? Or something? Leaflets? The only purpose of using leaflets is deception.

ninjapirate on April 17, 2014 at 2:03 PM

if john kerry says the leaflets are real, you know they’re not. end of story. nice try CIA.
